Yes, a rip-off thread. I quite liked -Ladeh No Name-'s idea of making a Cosplay Log, and as I have three costumes that I need to put together in less than a month, I figure I might want to keep a log of everything to do with these costumes. Things that are green are things that I already have, or have finished. Things that are red are things that I have questions about and need some help or suggestions on.

So here are my costumes.

A friend of mine has asked me to make her costume (Nana), and another friend has paid me so that she may keep her costume (Nyuu) after the con.

I am making these costumes kind of all over the place, doing what I can at the moment, so they will probably all get finished around the same time.

Wig
Wig put on order July 2. Paid $26.00, including s/h. Arrived July 12. Perfect.
Horns
Planning to Sculpey them. Must pick up Sculpey at the store. How would I wear them over the wig? Don't want to cheap out and just use a headband. Time spent: 1 hour.
Horn Ribbons
How will I get them to stick to the horns? This part is optional. Its in some pictures, in others, it isn't.
Neck Ribbon
A simple red/ dark pink ribbon. Found it in a drawer in my mom's craft room July 13.
Pink shirt
Found the perfect shirt July 12. Didn't have enough money left in my account for the day. Going back for it. Found a better one July 31, $4.97, Hangers. Time spent: 15 minutes.
Dress
Bought dress at Walmart, 14.95, July 30. Alterations: 3 hours.
Stockings
Perhaps going to use regular old grey stockings, and Sharpie some stripes on them. Okay, okay, no Sharpie. xD Ideas? Going shopping! August 1, found them for $15 at Nightshade's Corsets. Girl at the counter gave me $10 more than she should have. Call me dishonest, but I figured the extra $10 could be used for more cosplay stuff. I didn't say anything. xD
Shoes
Found a pair of black shoes that were perfect at Value Village, July 12, for $7.99. Need a paint job. What kind of paint do I use? Bought spray paint at Walmart for $7.89, July 31. Time spent: 15 minutes.

Time spent overall: 4 hours. Thats it?!

Green Hat
Found decent fabric (2m) and materials(1m elastic) for $3.98 at FabricLand. Spent 3 hours July 12 learning how to use a sewing machine, finished hat itself. Need to add Pompoms and steam it to make the fabric a little more flexible. Bought really nice yarn to make into pompoms for 2.97. Time spent: 4 hours.
Wig
Put on order July 4. $35.00 with s/h. Arrived July 14, perfect.
Pink Turtleneck
Found perfect shirt July 12, didn't have enough money. Going back. Bought August 5, $6.99. Time spent: 2 minutes.
Red Tanktop
Will use the same lace from skirt on straps. Obtained shirt. Must sew on lace. 3/4 done. Time spent: 1 hour.
Yellow Skirt
Found material July 13 (2) at Walmart for $3.94, and white lace (6m) for $9.72. Using 4m(?) for skirt. Going to need elastic. Forgot about that. stressed Bought elastic July 26 at Walmart for 2.98. Time spent so far: 3 hours. Still need to add bottom hem, and lace. Time spent: 3.75 hours.
Purple Boots
Just a pair of purple rain boots with a bit of white paint. Bought spray paint for $7.89, Walmart, July 31. Must also paint white edges. Time spent: 15 minutes.

Time spent overall: 9 hours.

Nana

Wig
Put on order July 12, $19.00 with s/h. Arrived July 14, two tones of pink. Oh my. Fits Nana's character, though.
Tie
How would I tie it around her head with the wig, and around her horns? A regular tie probably wouldn't be long or thin enough. Will just go with a long, thin strip of purple silky fabric. Optional.
Horns
Will make out of Sculpey.
Dress
Looked through patterns July 12, got an idea of what it would look like. Need to go back.
Shoes
Going to try to find Velcro shoes in a size 8 1/2 that are in decent condition for me to paint. If not, will possibly try pink hightops. Found lace up shoes!

I have a suggestion for the horns. Make them out of a softer air-dry clay (like paper-based) rather than sculpy. The clay should be soft and almost foamy when its dry, plus lightweight. Its a bit harder to work with, but you can cheat with the wig and have it look really good. What you do is just sink pins from the underside of the wig into the clay to hold it in place (since the clay more or less dries into a hard foam its easy to push them through.) Then no headband needed at all! I did this with a character who had dog ears and it worked great.

Hm. I'll give that a shot, since I accidentally bought the wrong kind of clay. I bought one of those 'never dries' kinds. sweatdrop

Is there a particular brand of clay that you recommend?

Stockings
Perhaps going to use regular old grey stockings, and Sharpie some stripes on them. Ideas?

I've never done something like that myself, but here's a suggestion that might have a better-looking end result than using Sharpie: Can you find a pair of black-and-white striped stocking similar to those that the character wears? If so, why not buy a pair of those and dye them grey? :3 It'd probably be more expensive than using a Sharpie, but appearance-wise, I think they would look much neater. Fabric dye should be easy to find at craft stores.

If you already have a pair of stockings you're going to use, I'd recommend using a fabric marker rather than a Sharpie-- or better yet, fabric paint! :3 Markers will leave coloring-lines on the stocking, but paint shouldn't do that. (Be careful to avoid the puffy kind, though... that would look weird.) If you use tape or paper or something to mask off the areas you're going to color, it'll look a lot neater than if you just freehanded it. In case you don't know what I mean:

Just take the stocking and lay it flat, then stick something, like masking tape, in a straight line above and below where you want a stripe. Paint that area, wait for it to dry, then flip the stocking over and do the other side. You'll have to make sure they line up, though. xD; Also, it might be wise to do an entire side before moving on to the other, since that means you'll only have to wait for it to dry once. Er... I hope that was clear, I'm not that great at explaining sometimes. :|

Claustrophobic? It means he's afraid of Santa Claus.

HOHOHO.

Haha, yay, I feel specciaaall... biggrin

Anyways,

I think you should put like a clip or something on the bottom of the horns...clip them to the hair of the wig. I think that'll work.

Stop, Patrick! You're scaring him!

HAHAHAHAHA.

I've been looking for stockings that look similar, but the stripes are much too small. In past years, my cosplays have been kinda lame, and I want this one to be as close to perfect as possible.

I was considering fabric paint, but wouldn't that go on a bit thick for stockings? I might try that masking tape idea, though.

Yeah, I was also considering clipping them onto the wig. My other idea was pinning them possibly through the wig, but I think I like the idea of just clipping them better.

It depends on the weight of the fabric that the stockings are made of... like, whether they're a sheer pantyhose-like fabric (hate that stuff xD;; ) or more like leggings or socks. If it's the latter, I think paint would work. Of course, it would be ideal if you could test how the paint worked with that type of fabric before starting to paint on the pair you're planning to use. :'3 If you DO use paint, be sure to avoid the stuff labeled "puffy" or "3D", since that will glob on thick, and you don't want that. :|

If the stockings are more like pantyhose, then I guess a marker probably would be your best bet. I personally wouldn't use Sharpie, since it's not intended for use on fabric and might rub off on your legs or something, but I've never used it on fabric, so I don't really know how it would behave. xD;

Hmm, I'm not sure what brand is best. The Crayola Model Magic is ok.

for the horns if you make a hole near the bottom big enough to fit a curved needle in then you can sew it to the wig biggrin

No lumpy bits near your head and no headbands

DAMN IT. I wish I knew about that sooner. D: The con is next weekend.

Thats okay, though. My mom gave me suggestions on where to shop for them. I never would have thought to look for them at the locations she gave me, but now it just seems so obvious. sweatdrop
