Welcome to Gaia! ::

OMG! Hello everyone!! heart
I'm so excited about this thread i can barely type! whee

I just recently became obsessed with amigurumi too. I've technically been practicing for a year, but it's only been in the past few months that I've been able to make anything I'm proud of.

This is what got me started: AmiGIRumi
Someone made an incredible amigurumi GIR from Invader Zim and it just drove me over the edge with cuteness!! She hasn't posted a pattern that I know of, so I've attempted to make one up myself... if I ever get down it I'll definitely let you all know! XD

@ x demons tears x: What's a crochet along?? Sounds fun 3nodding
x demons tears x
@limoria: You should give it a try. ^__^ You could even start out using a large hook size, and some easy to work with yarn and try something like a scarf. That way the stitches wouldn't have to be super tight and it could be a good start to working with smaller, amigurumi sized hooks and making those tight stitches necessary to keep the stuffing from sticking out.

so its been a month of hard work and i finally was able to do it. i made a cupcake.

sry about the crappy picture. i haven't finished my light box yet
Yay! That's so cute! domokun
I really love the eggs and toast!
I am going to try, but I have only tried crochetting once, and it was a chain.
I have a question- how do you get to the next line? sweatdrop Its confuzing!
my mum is so good at crocheting... but she never really had time to teach me how. I looked through all the little links you had in the first post and just wanted to say thank you :3 I think there's actually enough info there for me to teach myself. maybe one day I'll be good enough to post my own amigurumi in here :3
@Piskie: Welcome! ^ ^ heart It's always fun to meet another amigurumi enthusiast.

That Gir is sooooo cool! Omg, I wants it~! I love how detailed it is and how the plush even poses like Gir would...

There is a free Invader Zim Gir pattern available, though. It's on my long list of projects to someday do... It's not nearly as nice as that Gir, but it could help to give you an idea on putting yours together: weloveamigurumi: Amigurumi Gir

A craft-along (or an amigurumi-along, as it is in this case), is when several people agree to a pattern or a theme and try and complete the project within a certain amount of time, also adding their own spin to the pattern and design. I was thinking for this thread whoever completed the project, I would display everyone's results on the front page.

@limoria: That's awesome! *high fives* I really like the yarn you used for the frosting. heart

@robots at the disco: The eggs and toast were my favorite to crochet. ^ ^ I ended up making them magnets, so now they're on the fridge, looking all cute and brekkyfast-like.

Before doing amigurumi, I had only made chains as well and it took me a few days of messing around with the yarn and hook before I figured out how to correctly crochet in a spiral. You might want to check out some of these links for help...

    Crochet Basics and Abbreviations
If you don't know what 'sc in next sc, then 2 sc in next' this is definitely a useful place to look.
    Basic Crochet Instructions
This is one thing I did while starting out... I made a chain, which I had learned a long time ago, then learned how to turn and to work in the chain itself. Most amigurumi is done in a spiral, but it was still worthwhile to learn how to crochet a little sample, just to get a feel for working in the stitches.
    Magic Adjustable Ring
A must-know for anyone wanting to do amigurumi. The first several times I tried this, it was confusing as heck to me... but definitely worth practicing until you feel comfortable with it.
    Nimoe's Amigurumi Cupcake Tutorial
This was one of the most invaluable tutorials ever. It gives you a full explanation on how to put this thing together, row by row and even explains the abbreviations.

Hope the links and info helps. :3

@Jipsey: Kind of like my Grandma. She was an excellent sewer, but never really taught me much, so I ended up self-teaching myself how to sew too. Your very welcome for the links. They're pretty much just a cumulation of the links I found helpful myself while trying to teach myself crochet. I look forward to seeing your results some day! heart
@ x demons tears x: Wow! Thank you for the awesome link! ^^
And count me in that craft-along! xd
@robots at the disco- if you want to buy a book i would recommend crochet for dummies its the one im using and its easier to understand than most. and very detailed.

@x demons tears x- thank you ^.^ im working on a bunch of cupcakes. they are getting better with practice. soon i will have a CUPPYCAKE ARMY! .... xd
I'm crochet illiterate, but those Amigurumi are so cute!

I'm quite aware that crocheting is much more practical when making them, but I have found Amigurumi patterns for knitters.
http://mochimochiland.com/weblog/?cat=11 - The toilet paper one is to die for. XD
http://www.knittingpatterncentral.com/directory/animals.php - Lots of them here

The problem with knitting them is you have to knit each piece separately and sew them together, but after all, I learned that "ami" means to knit OR crochet, so some crazy knitters still try to knit 'em. ^^;
@Piskie: Your welcome. ^ ^ And I'm glad you're interested... Things should get moving along soon now... RL has thrown me some curveballs the last couple of weeks, but things should settle down in another week or so, thus a crochet-along should be able to get moving sometime then.

@limoria: Good job suggesting Crochet for Dummies. I totally forgot about that and that was probably the second most helpful crochet resource I found. I love that book. :3

@Kupocake: I feel like I've neglected knit amigurumi a lot since the start of this thread. At some point I'm going to add some knitting resource links to the first page too. X3 I've never tried knitting, but someday I'll have to give it a shot. Thanks for the links to get the knitters involved!

(I love your username. :3 )

Im really excited that you posted a threat with more details on the subject. I sent my crush the tutorial on the totoro thinney and he went crazy over it. He knows how to sew and crochet so I cant wait to see if hes gonna make it. Hopefully hell make one for me. Oh i wish he does that'd be soooooo cute <3
@blackrose: I am continually amazed at how many guys actually know how to sew/crochet/other crafty things. X3 I love the Totoro's too. heart I want to make the white one the most.

thanks for the links!! I was tried to find good references and patterns a long time ago whee
Blackrose, that would be soooo cute! *____*" I don't think any of my guy friends know how to make anything.

I plan on making some cupcakes for my friend's birthday which is next Friday. (: I really like the toilet paper roll too, but knitting's too hard. I can't do anything more than a purl. Which my mom taught me. She tried teaching me more too, but my brain went on shutdown. e_e

@lechuzah: Glad to be of help. :3

@ianthine: You're way ahead of me... knitting confuses me. X3 I want to learn someday, though. I think it makes prettier clothing and accessory kinds of stuff than crochet, even though I love crocheting.
