Qwen refuted the idea that cops were a pain by introducing the idea that they helped to bring justice to the streets of their fair city. True, and as long as they didn't interfere with Miss Obsidian's work then she was fine with them. "Well, I didn't mean they are inherently bad, just they are often not a great help. I suppose it is true for any profession; you have people who are dedicated to their job, and those that see it as a means of survival through the monetary compensation." she shrugged. "Even those employed for the safety of others are, unfortunately, not exempt from that fact. I suppose you would have to group superheroes in the dedicated group, of course." she laughed. "They must have an inherent dedication to their moral codes, or they would simply give up. It must take a great amount of dedication, actually. There is absolutely no extrinsic motivation to keep helping people when your identity is not revealed; you get no money, no fame. I suppose you could count any love that people offer to the persona, but I would think the intrinsic motivator more prominent..." She shrugged. She couldn't understand the motivation to become a hero; it was a waste of time. You didn't get anything for yourself, and the admiration people displayed was not even for you but for your persona. Any little change in their attentions could be devastating. She did not comprehend working for the love of humanity.

The chime that signaled the movement of the door sounded again, but this time Sabriel did not bother to even look up. She was becoming annoyed at looking to see who was walking through the door each time it chimed, even if it was an outrageous thing to cause irritation since she was not required to look up or even pay attention to it, she couldn’t help herself. The very nature of her personality and her life prompted her to divert her attention to any changes in the present environment; it was part of how she had kept herself from being caught as a resident villainess. Unable to restrain herself, however, she looked anyway. Another non-descript female. That was when she caught the look on Will's face, and she arched a brow and turned to look again at the woman that had entered just a moment ago. His emotions seemed to resemble shock and dismay, though she was hardly adept at distinguishing people's emotions without blatant hints. Her curiosity bit at her. She ignored the impulse to ask him who the woman was, waiting for an answer from everyone to her invitation. Avery was the first to respond; it was not a complete surprise. Avery seemed to like to talk, and seemed friendly enough. "Oooh, that sounds fun!" she answered, all bubbly and excitement. Sabriel almost wanted to strangle her right there and then, but bit back any words and smiled in response. "Let's go Qwen. I don't think either of us have plans this weekend."

Qwen agreed with Avery, giving her consent to join their little party. Well, even if it did mean she had to spend time with a group of people for a longer period of time than she was used to, at least she was challenging herself and gaining valuable insight to any possible skills she might be able to introduce into her repertoire. "Call of the Wolf? I am not certain. I know it is the largest convention on this side of the country, and almost every publishing house will be represented, including many of the independent and small-town ones. I would say it is quite probable that you will find the book you are looking for. If not, there will be people there that can help you find it." she grinned. She watched as a new customer entered the establishment, and Qwen stood up to go and take his order. She was, of course, still on duty. It made Sabriel remember why she loved the freedom of her job.... that's when she realized who it was that was sitting at the counter, waiting to be served. It was none other than the man known in the criminal underworld as the metaphorical father of criminals. He seemed to lay claim to the title of Devil, and who knows; maybe he was the real being, maybe he was just egotistical. Sabriel never really wanted to find out, herself. While she could be a downright menace, she really was nothing compared to him. If the stories told about him were true, he was responsible for much of the discontent in the city. She could be counted among his followers, but she really was her own operator; she wanted to err on the side of caution, however, and if she was on his good side; well, all the greater the chance of staying off his bad side. She had done a few jobs for him, or at least helped. As far as she knew, he couldn't recognize her; she had never appeared before him in her civilian state, only as Miss Obsidian.

Attempting to school her features into a mask of disinterest, she turned back to the group, though her skin tingled at the thought of having her back to him. Her nerves were all afire; how could he so nonchalantly saunter into a place like this? "So speaking of the convention," Qwen began as she sat down with them again, thankfully pulling Sabriel's attention away from the sinister fellow. "Would anyone want to hang out before it starts?" she asked, glancing around. Sabriel, in her inherent inability to guess at peoples emotions based on the subtle gestures, wasn't aware of her intentions. "Well, I'm often here anyway, so I guess I'm up for it."

Having spent the past few minutes contemplating the invitation, the others agreed to go as well. "Y'know, I wouldn't mind to go. I've got...things I needa look at." Sabriel arched a brow in his direction. His words implied some hidden agenda, and she had to admit her curiosity was piqued. She couldn't think of anything you could really do at a book convention aside from what most found boring; the networking, the business, and the books. Well, she would just have to keep an eye on him. Not that she hadn't intended to anyway; she went back to her previous thoughts. She glanced at his camera, itching to steal it from his hands and demolish the film inside. A part of her, however, also wanted to look at the pictures, and if they were flattering enough revel in the attention it would garner if published. Not that Sabriel would reap any rewards from it (quite the opposite, actually) but as Miss O she would be able to bask in the glory. Even if it was negative publicity. She's the one that chose to be a "villain", and it never bothered her before. Actually, she thought it quite entertaining that people couldn't figure her out. Since she had never really hurt anyone aside from their wallets and a bit rough-and-tumble when things got sticky, she still was an outlaw. She considered herself more of a neutral party, only interested in one thing; her own well-being and her personal luxury. She had no real plans, no vendetta against the human race, and no fantastical ideas about dominating the human race or saving it.

xxxHer bed was flush against the wall beneath the only two windows in the room. They were both halfway open, and she knew it without even opening her eyes. A breeze passed through the screen, which would have done a wonderful job at keeping the bugs out if they weren't so infernally small and could squeeze right through the mesh holes. There were curtains covering the windows and though they obscured the view from either direction they were a diaphanous material to allow the sunlight to pass through. Her skin felt warm in the rising sun. She never needed the alarm clock that sat by her bed; the birds outside her window woke her up every morning and it was more pleasant to awake to birdsong than a mechanical beep. Rio opened her eyes and looked at the clock. It was just a few minutes after 7 AM, and she stretched, reaching her fingers to the wall and stretching her feet off the end of the bed. She threw back the covers and jumped out, wide eyed with wild hair sticking up in every direction.

xxxShe didn't need any time to "wake up" and hated to lie in bed after she was awake. Rio was one of those rare morning bird and night owl, capable of running at full capacity on a handful of hours of sleep. She never felt tired, and only drank coffee for the taste of it, never because she felt tired. She was wearing a pair of old shorts made of sweatpants material and a sleeveless white shirt. She pulled on a pair of socks and dashed out into the small living room, sliding expertly across the floorboards. She lived in a small flat with one bedroom, a bathroom, kitchen/dining room, and a living room. That's all she needed, though. Too much space and she didn't know what to do with it. There was something comforting about being in a small and rather cramped space. It was how she explained away the mess that was her room. Well, mess was too tame a word; a vortex would be a better word to describe it. It made her feel cozy if she was in a small space, and paranoid if there were too many rooms that she couldn't watch easily, especially at night. Nothing had ever happened, and maybe she had seen too many crime shows, but it was easy to be paranoid when you were by yourself.

xxxShe turned on the radio, turning up the volume as loud as she could tolerate it and blasted her CD of favorite energetic songs. It was something of a ritual; she listened to mostly the same songs every morning. It always made her feel like it was giving her the extra bounce in her step, like a fresh glass of orange juice always seemed to energize her body. She danced through her apartment, singing at the top of her voice. It was a small apartment, but luckily it was not part of a complex. It was on a piece of property that was set back a bit from the road compared to the other apartments and small houses. This odd placement of her home made it well situated to afford her a certain level of privacy, whether it meant not hearing everything going on in the road or in her neighbor's houses or keeping her neighbors from complaining about her noise, it was extremely convenient. It was not a wealthy section of town, but she preferred to live with the hippies and the punks and the kids turning just twenty.

xxxEven the at times frighteningly chauvinistic men that sat on their porches drinking beer and smoking cigarettes and either called lewd things to passers-by or smashed their bottles out in the road had their neighborhood charm. She thrived on drama though she preferred to keep herself above it, always looking in as an outsider. It kept her life relatively stable despite how often she moved around to new places (for she also needed novelty in her life) but it did not afford her much interpersonal contact. She had been too trusting in the past, to open and honest, too...dependent on someone else for her own happiness. Well she had thoroughly learned her lesson, and if it was a bit harsh at least it had been learned early on in her life so that she could correct her behavior to avoid that unpleasantness in the future. She finished eating and put her dishes in the sink, then traipsed into her bedroom to get ready for the day, dancing all the way.

xxxHer light blue tee bore the image of a unicorn that said "they do exist" underneath, and there was a black patch in the knee of her tight jeans that she had cut one summer into capris that fell mid-calf and frayed slightly. She wore a pair of converse high-tops in zebra print, and a plain black belt around her waist with a rather intricate holographic belt-buckle with her name on it. She slung a messenger bag over her shoulder and opened it up, checking the inventory to make sure she had everything. Wallet (with only her id and membership cards)? Check. Money stuffed in her bra for safekeeping? Check. Cellphone? She pulled it out of the bag and stuffed it into her pocket. Check. Notepad and pens? Check. Sketchbook and pencils? She ran through it all in her head, checking to make sure it was all there. When she felt completely ready, she slipped out the door, ruffling her hair, wiping the hair product off onto her pants. Her hair was sticking up in all directions, but this time it was on purpose; not just because she tossed and turned in her sleep. Her hair was dark brown with highlights, cut in layers that fell just past the top of her ears. She preferred her hair to be short; when it was long, it was just too much of a pain to take care of. She could wash her hair and just leave it without brushing it. She liked to put some generic brand hair gunk in it to make it stand up a bit.

xxxShe enjoyed looking a little chaotic.

xxxShe checked the watch strapped to her wrist, shaking her arm to part the varied bracelets that were covering the face of the watch so she could read the time. She still had a few hours before she had to be at work; that was one of the great things about Healthy Living; it was owned by a couple of health food hippies. She had worked at health food stores that were owned by a bunch of yuppies that only saw it as a way to make money; the woman that owned this store had started out with a small stand at a farmer's market and worked her way up to the large store it was now. She really cared about what she sold, who was selling it, and that everyone was happy. She wanted her workers to be happy, not just the clients; she believed that if the employees interacting with people were happy, they were bound to work harder and make the clients happy in turn. It was good business practice, and it meant that there was little actual pressure to do things--just the desire to keep the job and make their boss pleased. Thinking about how lucky she was to work in such a relaxed environment compared to so many people that had to deal with deadlines, tyrant bosses, exploitative managers, and a boring or redundant routine every day, she slung her messenger back so it was against her back and tightened the strap so it would stay that way, looping it around her neck as well so it fell across her chest and back at an angle. She unlocked her bike and looped the lock around the strap and re-locked it, then mounted the bike and set off for town.

xxxAs she was riding down a mellow hill, all she could hear was the whistle of the wind in her ears. Her hair, mostly plastered to her head and flaring back, made her remember that she really ought to get a new helmet. Her old one had, ironically enough, broken when she dropped it down a hill a few days ago. She might look silly riding with a hulking piece of plastic over her head, but at least she was marginally safer. You could never be completely safe no matter what precautions you took in life, but every little step was better than nothing. She mentally reviewed how much money she had on her person and what she was planning on using it for today, but there really wasn't much at all. She didn't have to worry bout food, because she just got free food at work. If she was really pressed, she could just make herself a smoothie at her little coffee/smoothie island. Even though the pay was kind of s**t compared to some places she had worked, the trade-off was being able to take free food. Maybe when I get there I'll have myself a.....strawberry smoothie. No; raspberry. Oooh....both? she contemplated her choices, then rejoiced in the small amount of relief she felt that this morning, that was her biggest concern.

xxxAs she stood before the crosswalk standing next to her bike, she glanced up at the traffic light. She had just missed the red light, and now had to wait for the cars to stop before she could make her crossing, necessary in her route to work (she liked to meander about the town and take her time). She happened to look into Javascript, which was directly opposite from where she was standing. Luckily it was close enough to see right into the window, and what she saw was....delightful. As previously stated, she thrived on drama. Her friend Evan was highly embroiled in a dramatic romance, involving Jodie and Benjamin. She knew them, though perhaps not well and not on a personal level; simply through gossip and her own private observation. She had a feeling that Jodie was likely inclined to dislike her simply on the premise that she hung around Evan. It was a purely platonic relationship between them, //of course. Sometimes she thrilled in flirtation, but she was not the type to sleep with someone just for their charming airs. She was more the type that preferred to manipulate the love lives of those around her, promoting romantic drama in the lives of everyone else but herself. When she finally got the walk signal, she skipped across the street whistling in high spirits. She took her time locking up her bike while she watched the scene unfolding in the shop. She waited for an opportune moment to make her entrance. All right, so sometimes she enjoyed having drama in her life, but she wanted to be in complete control of it. She hated when she found herself mired in a stressful situation, but if she was the one instigating the drama; well, that was different. Of course, she'd be the first to admit to hypocrisy, and in fact it was something she considered a bit of a personality trait of hers. It made life easier to be able to say what you think but do whatever you feel like. If you're honest and upfront about being a hypocrite, people would be less inclined to hold you to your opinions and values, and that's what suited her perfectly. She saw the young woman turn to address the two young men involved in her little love triangle, and it was at that moment that she pushed through the front doors, slipped past Jodie, and approached Evan.

xxx"Morning, Evan and strangers....what's kickin'?" She grinned, relishing the tense atmosphere. Ahh, it was a good day when she came to Cohen...

He had thought long and hard about it; his victory speech and prize. Well.....okay, really he had just figured to wing it, but he thought a lot previously about just improvising it all as he went along. Perhaps not the best method for public eloquence, but he wasn't really worried about that just now. No one actually expected him to be an expert speech giver. They (his fellow students and adoring audience) didn't want to hear large words and grandiose ideas from him. Everyone expected to be entertained every time Sirius opened his mouth, and the easiest way to please them was to come up with something on the spot. Luckily, he had a tendency toward creativity when under pressure, which could explain why he incessantly procrastinated. He just couldn't seem to get himself motivated to do anything ahead of time. So naturally, he was often a bit anxious at deadlines, though he had learned to bypass the anxiety that comes from the drama of not knowing whether you'll get something done in time or not. It helped his image to not get straight As, but he made sure to make up for it so that he could pass easily enough. He wasn't stupid, just lazy with a set of personal priorities that did not hold academic placement in high regard.

"Five year old boyslut? Please...." he rolled his eyes dramatically. "Is that really all you can come up with, Andy? Have I defeated you so permanently that you cannot even insult me correctly anymore? If I am a five year old, I must be the greatest genius this universe has EVER seen. And if I, at five years old as you suggest I am, might earn the 'title' of boyslut, then I must also be the greatest ladie's man EVER. Might I give you a piece of advice? If you are going to design insults to actually insult people, you ought to think carefully about how you phrase them..." He leaned back, a smug look upon his face. Sure, he knew he could be immature. That was part of his thing--they didn't call it "boyish charm" for nothing. Despite all the really s**t things he did, as long as he flattered the right people and ended it all with his brightest smile, everyone ate it up. It really was a vicious circle, and although it wasn't something he really wanted to change, if he had decided to alter his personal world, he would find it incredibly difficult indeed. Besides, he liked the way his life was. Most of the time. It was a bit tiring at times to always be the charming one, but he really did thrive in the spotlight. He wasn't really a big fan of psychology, but plenty of people had played about with the idea as to why he was the scoundrel he was. Personally, he liked to blame his family. Everyone knew that he shared the family name of Black, descendant from an ancient wizarding house of purebloods. His mother was, unfortunately, rather well known as an outspoken purist, advocating for the eradication of muggles from the Wizarding world, or at the very least subjucation of muggles and squibs and mixed-bloods. He had tried to distance himself from them, make it seem as if his name was just a common name, a mistake; sure, he was Sirius Black but he wasn't that kind of Black....

When he had first entered Hogwarts, he was a withdrawn and rather nervous type of child. It had taken being sorted into Gryffindor (though relieved at first he realized what it would mean when he got home) and meeting his current best friends. They had, as they jokingly said often, created a monster in him. He had done a complete "one-eighty" and became the loud, outgoing prankster he was today. With James' help, of course. The two were nearly inseparable, though as of late he had been seeing less and less of James outside of classes and in the dorms. It was all right, however, for he knew that no matter what time they spent doing other things and hanging around with other people, their friendship could not be broken by something so trifle as distance. James was like his soul brother. Not in any creepy way of course, it was purely platonic if intense. James was...his lifeline. He didn't like to dwell on the thought, for it hurt his manly pride in more ways than one, to think of how weak he could be.

"Do your worst." she said, and so he grinned. "That, my dear Andy, is exactly what I plan on doing." he had a look of boyish mischief on his face mingled with excitement. He didn't know exactly what "punishment' he was going to give her. There were any number of things, he was sure, but at the moment he was not doing so well in attempts to come up with something that she either wouldn't expect or that would be so totally devastating that she would have to admit defeat for good. He knew it was out there, he just....had to put it all together. Unfortunately, he now only had a few moments before he had to make a decision. At Lily's offer to act as his 'cheerleader', he merely shrugged. "Well, you can do whatever makes you happy, I'll not judge." He stood up and clambered onto the bench, clearing his throat.

"Attention, ladies and gentlemen; yes, your attention please..." He was shouting above the din, but a spell to broadcast his voice was unnecessary. He had the ability to fill a room with his voice, to be loud enough that all could hear him. He also had the stage presence, and despite the few that disliked him, he was actually admired by a large enough percentage of the population (even Slytherins despite his obvious disdain and Gryffindor pride) that they quickly paid attention. They knew something interesting was about to happen, and an excited hush spread through the room. Everyone wore a curious and amused expression on their faces as they stared up at Sirius. He motioned to Andy. "As you know and have no doubt been following closely, Andy Lockhart and I had a bet. Well, naturally enough, I won. Now, ladies, I know it was difficult for both of us, but you know where to find me after dinner..." He glanced around and gave an exaggerated wink and a smile to the females in general. "Anyway, there was no real set prize for me if I won, and I've thought about it. I'm just not sure what would be the best punishment for Andy, or the best prize for me. So I'm leaving it largely up to you all!" He threw his arms out and gestured about the room. "Please, do not hesitate to shout out your ideas! Except Slytherins. I don't trust you lot to not suggest something gruesome. You know, I was thinking about the whole 'making her my slave' thing, or perhaps even making her say nice things to or about me for a week (we all know that would really break her) but it just seems so...uncreative. Cliche. So please, help a brother out!" He laughed, trying to pick out the shouts that his little speech earned.
