★ 『 All good stories begin with heroes, right? The reader develops a relationship with those white knights about whom he reads, following along with every painful detail as they toil along on a moral journey that renders them all the more virtuous. Usually, the hero or heroine receives some great honor for saving the region from its otherwise perilous fate. This is not such a story. In fact, it might be best if you reversed your expectations about the antagonists and protagonists of this one; they've switched sides. In other words, you should be rooting for the bad guys, who are desperately trying to stamp out the sparkling valiance of the good guys, since the protagonists are holding the antagonists hostage and disrupting the world order. They'd swarmed the peaceful (but evil) cities of the region and have done their worst-- made them nice. Too much to believe? Maybe you need a few specifics.

In a world where everyone is out for himself, rules are all that keeps chaos from ensuing among the population. Regulations of Order bind all citizens to perform basic actions with civility, which includes restrictions on lying, murder, and torture, to name a few. These laws were enacted by a regime that has dominated the Kingdom of Airea for nearly seven centuries, known first as the Order of the Blood, which was composed of powerful necromancers, alchemists, warlocks, and sorceresses. As time passed, this organization became known only as the Order, and spread its reach as far as possible. But they have remained a largely secular group, drawing on portions of the major religious and political groups of the kingdom. Political climates have certainly changed as the Order ruled over its kingdom, allowing for conservative or liberal changes to be made as the will of the society has changed. But the Order has always retained absolute control over the population, punishing violations of the Regulations with swiftness. Political ambitions and changes have never been of much concern to the Order; rather their concern has been the Regulations and their importance to the functioning of society. Enforcing the Regulations is surprisingly easy work of an army of unspecialized guards and magic-wielding officers; citizens are committed to the laws of the kingdom, as they share an oath.

The Order retained control for seven centuries, and things continued in an agreeable manner. Wars, feuds, and assassinations continued in this aggressive realm, but the Regulations ensured that those objectives did not spiral Airea into political chaos. The Order continued to seek out magical talent amidst the professional criminal citizens, not just honing talent, but keeping it within its purview. But as the Order celebrated its seventh century of control over Airea, a mysterious cult emerged on the scene. Calling themselves the Brotherhood of Light-Bearers, this cult prophesied the destruction of Airea due to sinful transgressions and began enlisting and converting ordinary citizens to their cause. Above all, the Brotherhood preached peace and tolerance of all. They warned Aireans that the Order was leading them into damnation,
