After that day, when Alex had confessed he was in love with me things had changed catastrophically. Both in good and bad. I no longer felt anything more than a friend towards Ryan, it was odd but every time he saw me with Alex he'd tease and always make me upset. It seemed his ability to make me angry still hadn't gone away, it seemed like it always had before. Well, besides that fact that Alex and I were like ... a couple now. Ok, it feels odd to say it, but yes. I do finally have a boyfriend now. One thing I loved about Alex was that he never tried to rush anything. Wouldn't you have expected a guy who's gone out with numerous girls to want to rush a relationship with the girl he's loved? Either he was really patient, or maybe he knew I was inexperienced and wasn't going to try and surprise me with anything.
We were still on vacation, but it was coming to a close. Our last few days had been spent in Orlando at Universal, Disney, and Sea World. It had been a long while since I'd actually been to those places, but it was fun to go there once again. Especially with a boyfriend. The whole experience was 'magical' (I know that's the cheesy Disney theme), we hadn't gotten past much more of small kisses and holding hands. I seemed like puppy love, but I liked it this way.
"Hey Cam do you want a ride home?" Alex asked loading my belongings onto the back of Ryan's truck. I had later found out that Ryan had taken a ride home with Tiffany and Vanessa, which left Alex and I alone to take the ride home.
"Sure," I replied cheerfully, I really had been in a rather good mood for the last few days. Helping with the last of the bags I headed to the passenger's side of the truck and hopped in. The chilly weather of New Hampshire was a real contrast to warm Florida weather, so I was back in my white peacoat and jeans. My hair was tied up and I had earmuffs on, but taking a quick look in the rear view mirror, I noticed my rosy cheeks against my pale skin.
The airport was far from home by at least an hour if we weren't caught in traffic. That was what sucked about actually living in a middle of nowhere town like Contoocook, New Hampshire. It was a cute little town owned by the natives, but it was small and barely ever heard of. The whole town was in the midst of a mountain range and had beautiful scenic views year round. The tall pines making the forest ever green. I had to admit, there were a lot of druggies down in our town though. The police never seemed to really do anything about the pot heads.
I looked over to Alex who stared blandly out the windshield, his face was flushed probably from the cold. He looked grim and unhappy for some reason. "Are you ok? You look a little ... off," I tried to not push at it, if he was in a lousy mood I didn't want to make it worse.
Alex peered over quickly. "I'm fine. Thanks for asking," he looked back through the windshield not convincing me all too much. Something wasn't right, and he didn't want to tell me. Slouching in my chair I looked out the window for comfort. We were boyfriend and girlfriend, so why wasn't he giving me any of the information I wanted? There was no reason to keep secrets anymore.
Alex pulled onto the dirt road that lead to my house in the midst of the pine forest. Snow still covered about a foot of the ground making me think back to the warm and welcoming weather in Florida that I was beginning to miss. The truck pulled up to a solitary house which belonged to my family. It was an old house, it looked like a large log cabin built with Linkin Logs. My father had always complained about it being too isolated and how he wanted to move to a place where we actually had real neighbors, but my mother had sassed him and said that we'd be living in the house her father and grandfather built for the rest of her life.
"Thanks," I turned to peck him on the lips but Alex turned his head away. "What do I have cooties or something?" I meant it to sound teasing, but instead I sounded offended. It did kind of hurt that Alex didn't want a kiss from me.
"No, that's not it. I just have a cold, I don't want to give it to you," he reasoned still not looking at me.
I frowned still upset. "Ok, well I hope you feel better soon Alex," I refused to leave without giving a hug. He felt extremely hot, feverish hot. He reacted slowly hugging me tightly back. His cheek brushed mine, it burned making my face flush crazily. "Hey, you're so.. hot. I mean literally, you should lay down and rest when you get home," I said giving him a worried look. He focused his eyes on me and attempted to give me a wolfish grin, but it faded quickly. "Well, be careful," I bet I sounded like his mother worrying so much. But I'd never felt any human so hot in my life.
I opened the door and headed to the back of the truck and grabbed my bag. Alex pulled out of the dirt driveway and left, leaving me in the snow to drag my bags to the door. As I unlocked the mahogany door, I could hear Charlie howling inside obviously excited by my appearance home. The large fluffy cream colored wolf like dog barreled down the stairs from the second floor with Salem following him.
The dog sniffed me sticking his nose in every possible spot he could. Salem wrapped it tail around his feet as he sat down looking up at me expectantly mewing and purring. "Eesh, I'm home ok, ok?" I still wasn't over how sick Alex seemed, but he'd probably go home and rest like I had told him to. I knelt down and Charlie took advantage of it licking my face furiously like I was the child and he was the parent who had been so worried to where as I had been. "Clam down," I hushed petting his head as Salem plopped down on my lap.
I heard another pair of footsteps as my mother bounded down the stairs. She didn't look a whole like me. She had darkly tanned skin, referring to her Cherokee heritage, long dark lashes (that I had managed to get), high cheekbones, and long dark brown locks of hair. She was a tall 5'10", and easily over stepped most guys. My father on the other hand was Irish and I had taken most of my looks from him, the red hair, pale skin, and pale green eyes. I'd gotten my mother's slender frame, long lashes, thick hair, and high cheekbones.
"Cameron! How was Florida?" she asked sounding just as excited as the dog and cat were acting.
I smiled back trying to mask my worry. "Good, I have a boyfriend now," I told her, my mother wasn't the type of woman who would get upset about a boyfriend. She had been trying to get me one for so long that she was one of the main reasons I didn't like dating, because she'd be there to judge who I was going out with.
Her dark green eyes flashed. "Really? Who? Don't tell me it's that Ryan boy," she was never too fond of Ryan. She'd always liked Alex a lot more than Ryan, I never knew why but she didn't look like she was about to tell me.
"No, it's Alex," I replied scratching Charlie behind his left ear.
My mother smiled brilliantly. "Really?" she asked excitedly. I nodded sheepishly in reply, I expected her to ask more questions about him. "Good, I think he suits you much better than any other boy in this town," she stated firmly.
"He has a cold, he was really hot when dropped me off," I murmured, Salem looked up at me a mewed as if sensing my discomfort.
My mother's eyes turned steely. "I hope he'll be ok," she sounded off and distant. I stared for a moment wondering why she seemed to know something that I didn't. "You know Swine Flu is going around still, but Alex is strong. He'll be fine," she finished turned grabbing my bags probably heading to unpack them and throw them in the wash. Her expression said that she meant what she said, but I still wasn't settled about knowing he was sick.
I turned the keys in the ignition of my mother's dark violet 2010 Mercury Milan Hybrid, my truck wouldn't start so my mom had lent me her car. The morning was cold and would take some getting use to again. I rubbed my hands together before pulling out of the driveway and heading down the dirt road to the main road. The school was only about two miles away, about a five minute drive. Everything was either green or white, making New Hampshire seem bland in my eyes. I was hoping that Alex had gotten over his fever and was coming to school today.
The winding road that led to my house went through the deep forest. My mother claimed that we owned those acres of land, but I wasn't all too sure if it was ours or the town's. Pulling out into the barren main road of the town I slowly began my drive to school. There weren't many people on the road, as usual. Most kids took the bus to cut down on road traffic, but I'd always thought of the buses as 'Loser Cruisers' which was the perfectly fitting name that Tiffany had come up with for the buses.
My hopes were high and if Alex were here, hopefully he'd be in much more of a happy and welcoming mood than yesterday. Keeping my slow and turtle steady pace I took a left into the high school's parking lot. It was my first time back after a week and a half and my friends who weren't in band were probably going to be glad to see me back. For some reason I couldn't share their exhilaration though, instead as I parked my mother's car I searched around my Alex's vehicle hoping to find it somewhere in the parking lot. It wasn't here.
Turning the stalling Mercury off I grabbed my backpack and left disappointed. Maybe I'd visit him after school, it just felt unsettling not knowing what was really happening and if he was really ok. He had been so hot yesterday that it wasn't even funny, but his expression hadn't let me in on how he was feeling. He just looked ... tired.
"Hey where you going?" Ryan asked as I jumped back into my mother's car ready to take off to Alex's house. He hadn't been in school today, and Ryan didn't seem to know a thing about it. Which made me feel a bit more unsettled than before, if Ryan didn't know then Alex had to be extremely sick.
"Alex's house, I want to make sure he's ok. He wasn't in school today and yesterday when he dropped me off he was feeling rather warm," I explained quickly revving the engine and slapping the seat belt into its buckle.
Ryan opened the passenger seat door and hopped in. "Then I'm coming with you, I mean he is after all my best friend," the blonde quickly pointed out, it wasn't much of an excuse, but if I were Ryan I'd want to see if my best friend was ok as well. I nodded and headed for the exit of the school parking lot. The snow on the ground was slushy turning up puddles on the sides of the road. Snow plows came by here and there, but all they did was throw slush onto the sides of the road, making a pit of slush on the sidewalks. "So how'd you know he was so warm?" Ryan asked trying to drag the silence away and make everything seem slightly more cheerful. That was usually Alex's job, but saying that he wasn't here, Ryan was probably trying to make up for that.
"He was just really... hot when I touched him. I hope he doesn't have anything serious," I answered murmuring half to myself.
"Wow, it's so strange to hear you sound so worried. It's extremely strange that you have a boyfriend. I can't get used to it, last boyfriend you had, after that you became affectionphobic," the blue eyed boy leaned back into the passenger's seat looking out the window. He said everything as if he could read me like a book, but I guess he could. It felt strange being around him not like liking him anymore, knowing that I had a boyfriend whom I liked very much. It was... odd knowing he was just a friend. But that was how it had always been, right?
"Yeah, well that's because Kevin wanted a hug like ten times a day. I can't stand hugs most of the time, they just feel awkward and invade my personal space. If I don't like like a person it feels icky giving them a hug," I explained.
"Nice choice of words," Ryan teased making me flush red as I stared flustered out the windshield. "So, you like like Alex?" he asked sounding like a young teen girl who wanted to know all the information.
"So what if I do!" I huffed.
Ryan chuckled. "You're so touchy, geez. That's good though, I think that's what Alex needs. Someone who likes him for who he is, he can always be himself around you compared to other girls he's dated," he settled back into his chair as I pulled onto another old rugged path, it was an old train track and led to a few cabins, one including Alex's house. My hear thudded with anticipation as I drove closer and closer to his house. Hopefully he'd be fine sitting on the couch or in his bed relaxing.
Bearing right, I headed down a forked path towards his house. There are a crap load of forests up here in New Hampshire, and if you didn't live in a city, mostly everyone lived in an isolated part of the forest. Pulling in front of the small red cabin I turned the car off and hopped out the car quickly followed by Ryan who seemed to stiffen up under the watchful eyes of Alex's grandfather Jeb.
The small wrinkled man sat on the farmer's porch in his rocking chair, his cane under his hand. His long gray hair was pulled back, silver streams highlighting his hair. Usually he welcomed me with a toothless smile, but instead he looked rather sullen, a long frown. "Good afternoon Jeb, is Alex inside? Ryan and I came to see how he was doing, he wasn't feeling rather well yesterday and wasn't in school today, so we were a little worried..." I trailed off as Jeb stared blankly with his old charcoal eyes.
"You don't want to see him," the old man rasped staring at me with an earnest look, hidden behind his years of wisdom.
"But I do Jeb, I want to see Alex," I prodded trying to get the old native to let me in and see my boyfriend.
Jeb looked from me to Ryan. He took a bony old hand and pointed at Ryan. "He may go, but not you Cameron. I'm sorry, but you must wait until he goes back to school and then you can see him if you still want to," if I still want to? What? Ryan looked bewildered as Jeb had let him go. "You may go in Ryan." I held back a frustrated frown and let Ryan reluctantly look back at me and head inside as I headed back for the car.
Why did Ryan get to go in, but not me? So what, they were best friends, I was his girlfriend and I deserved to see him as well. Jeb stared at me from his perch on the porch, but I wouldn't let myself bat an eye of emotion at him. I couldn't let the old man win a fight that was never truly fair.
A few moments later, Ryan exited a bland look on his face. A grimace accompanied it, making my heart leap from my chest. Was Alex ok? Ryan quickly got into the car and shut the door looking down at his feet without much of a word. "Hey, what happened? Is he ok?" the words rushed from me quickly, I didn't mask myself any longer.
Ryan looked up at me and flashed an reluctant smile. "He's doing ok, he just has a bad fever. He'll be back before you know it," his words sounded persuasive, but his expression said otherwise. His expression said that his grandma had just died and he was really upset about it. But why wouldn't he give anything away? It hurt not knowing.
