xxxx Erica stood barefoot in front of the large mirror that took up one wall in her bathroom, studying her appearance. Her brunette hair was down and fell in soft curls that framed her face and bounced with her heads every move. The makeup that covered her face was simple, but made her light blue eyes stand out. The dark blue dress she wore also helped them to stand out. It too moved with the slightest movement, the hem brushing the tops of her knees. Letting out a sigh, she turned her back on the mirror and walked over to counter were her jewelry and shoes sat. Sliding the shoes over the edge, she watched as they fell to the ground and landed with a small thud. Using her foot, she turned them the right way and slipped her feet inside. They were not heels as her father had asked, but rather flats. She was not a big fan of heels; she found them to be very uncomfortable to walk in. Add a boat rocked by the sea and you would have yourself a natural disaster. Pushing that thought out of her head, she stretched a hand out and grabbed the small dangling pearl earrings that her mother had given her for her fourteenth birthday. Fastening them too both of her ears, she then grabbed a matching necklace and did the clasp.
xxxx “Erica? Your father is wondering if you are ready to go? People are starting to arrive.” Erica turned towards the open bathroom door. “In the bathroom. I’m almost ready.” She called before turning around and walking back to the mirror she was standing in front of moments before. She looked at her slightly changed appearance and smiled. It was a very simple look but it made her happy. Erica wasn’t the one to be all flashy and over dressed for every small occasion. Behind her, she could her the sound of her mother pushing the door open wider and walking into the room. A few seconds passed before she was standing behind her daughter. Erica looked at her mother’s reflection and saw her smile. “You look lovely.” She said, wrapping her arms around her daughter. The smile that had been on Erica’s face grew as she turned around and wrapped her own arms around her mother and gave her a gentle squeeze. They stood like this for a few moments before pulling apart from one another. “We should go, your father will be wondering what’s keeping us.” Her mother said before turning around a leading the way out the door, she smile still on her face. Erica followed, pausing for a few moments in her bedroom to grab the large present that sat on the end.
xxxx Walking down the stairs, she saw that her mother had been right in saying that people had started arriving. Most of the people that had arrived were the children that her brother had invited for his party, but she also saw a few of her aunts, uncles, and other family members. “Your fathers decided to take the carriage down to the dock. If you want you can give me your gift and go and catch the first trip down. The children will be taking the second trip.” Her mother told her. Erica saw there and thought about it for a few seconds before nodding and offering the gift to her mother. “Thanks mom. Do you know how long dads planning on being out? I saw on the news that there was supposed to be a storm later tonight.” Her mother gave a small chuckle before taking the gift. “You know your father, we would be out there all night if he had his way. But I talked to him and convinced him that we should start heading back in around eleven.” Erica nodded again. Her father loved to go out sailing. He would often spend most days out on the water. She said her good-bye to her mother before making her way through the crowd of children and family.
xxxx Once outside the house, she walked over to the horse drawn carriage that was standing in the driveway. The family horses Peppermint and Phillip where attached to the front. She said her hellos to the horse before climbing into the wagon that they were strapped too. There she waited a good ten minutes for her family to join her. Once they had all found a seat and ready, a man who worked for her father came out and steered the horses down the bumpy path that led down to the family dock. Her father greeted them at the dock. He helped everyone down and led everyone to the yacht while the carriage left to get the rest of the people still at the house. The first thing that she saw was a large banner draped over one side of the boat that read ‘Happy tenth birthday Flynn!’ The insides and decks were also different. The maids had decorated the yacht with all kinds of balloons and streamers. There were also all sorts of games set up for her brother and his friends. The food was found down in the small den area below deck. Erica grabbed some food first, knowing that the kids would go after it first. With a plate full, she went up to the way back and sat on one of the many chairs and ate.
... Time Skip ...
xxxx “Happy Birthday dear Flynn! Happy birthday to you!” The end of the song was drawn out as everyone ended at different times. Erica stood behind her brother and clapped along with everyone else when he blew out all ten candles that were placed on his large birthday cake. “Happy birthday Flynn.” She said, grabbing him from behind and giving him a quick hug before letting him go to get some cake. Everyone found a seat down below deck, but Erica decided to take her plate to the back. She walked right up to the railing and leaned against it before taking her fork and stabbing a piece of cake. Placing it in her mouth, she looked over the edge. The water was dark but lit up by all the lights from the yacht. “Having fun?” A voice asked from behind her. After giving out a small scream, she turned around to face the owner of the voice that had frightened her. “Dad! You scared the daylights out of me! You know not to do that to me.” She said, seeing her father sitting in one of the lawn chairs, a plate of cake in his lap as well. Smiling, she watched as he forked a piece of cake and moved it to his lips. “I’m sorry, I thought you heard me come over.” Erica only rolled her eyes before turned back around and looking out over the water.
xxxx “It’s looks like it’s going to storm bad.” She commented, watching the watch slap the side of the boat. “We’ll be fine. The storm will most likely hit early in the morning. You’ll be asleep by then.” Her father replied, taking another bite of cake. Continuing to look out over the water, she saw something just below the surface. “Hey dad, there’s something shiny in the water. I think it’s a type of fish.” She said, squinting hard to try and figure out what it was. “With all this noise, I don’t think that a fish would come this close. It’s probably just a candy wrapper. I told your brother and his friends that they weren’t supposed to throw their garbage over the edge.” She could hear the annoyance in her father’s voice. She listened to what he had to say, but she didn’t believe that it was a wrapper. Figuring that she could probably see better and possible grab it if she leaned over the edge a bit, she slowly leaned over and reached out a hand. “Erica, don’t do that.” Her father told her. “Just a second, I’ve almost got it.” She said. Her fingertips were inches away from the water. The tips of her feet hovered above the wood deck. “Erica I’m serious, get down.” She could hear the slight anger in her fathers voice and figure that she should listen to him. She was about to put her weight back on her feet when a large wave hit the side of the boat.
xxxx It felt like slow motion. Erica felt herself slowly slid over the railing and into the water headfirst. Water entered her mouth and traveled uncomfortably down her throat. She was under water for a few seconds before she remembered that she needed air to breath. Kicking out her legs, she swam with all her might towards the surface. Her head shot out of the water and the first thing that reached her ears was the sound of her father shouting her name. “Erica! Erica! Erica!” Spiting out water, she tried to cry out but found that her throat was sore from the salt water. All she could do was kick her legs as had as she could towards the boat that was moving away from her. Her father continued to call her name, but it was slowly growing faint as the boat moved farther away. She soon became tired from fighting the waves that she just stopped. Her legs went limp and all she could do was helplessly try and stay afloat. The last thing she saw were the lights of the yacht before closing her eyes and slipping under the water.
