• Personality
- ↪ Nolan is one of the largest hearted individuals a person can meet. He doesn't seem to have a single mean bone within his body. He treats everyone he meets with much respect, particularly women. He can be a bit shy upon first meeting him however. Once he's spoke with any one a couple times, it is almost like he has been friends with them forever. He always has something warm and kind hearted to say to anyone and is always willing to encourage anyone who is feeling down or doubting themselves. He is a very determined young individual who is willing to work hard and do what it takes to achieve his dreams. He will go out of his way to help others though, even if this takes him off the path of achieving his own ambitions. Overall he is just a sweet, caring, young individual with a fairly good outlook on life.
• History
- ↪ Nolan's parents were high school sweethearts married right out of college. Their love could have been considered the perfect one to any romantic, however, Nolan was conceived out of desperation. Nolan's father, James, had enlisted into the armed forces and was to be deployed shortly after he married Eliza, Nolan's mother. Eliza stayed behind and lived at home with her parents while attending college and James went on to fight for the freedom of his country. Eliza's parents, Norman and Caroline, never approved of their daughter's choice to marry so young, nor the boy whom she had picked, but they would never deny their only daughter a home. The only deal they had made with her to allow her to stay was that she stay in school and get a job. Her parents, although wealthy, were not about to let their daughter get off easy for her mistakes. They were the owners of a major and very profitable ranch, which they had hoped to pass on to their daughter and her family. Eliza's choices, however, made them question this idea. Originally they had planned on passing the ranch to their son, which they never had due to Caroline falling ill and becoming infertile. When Eliza came to the two a couple months after James had let for combat, announcing that she was pregnant, Norman and Caroline were even more skeptical of trusting their daughter with their ranch more than ever.
Seven months later, Eliza gave birth to a stunning baby boy whom she named Nolan. Despite his grandparent's feelings towards both his mother and father, they loved him unconditionally and helped Eliza raise him. Norman and Caroline forced Eliza to still work and go to school, despite having a child to take care of as well. They even went to the extent of threatening to take full custody of Nolan and kicking her out of their home if she did not comply. Of course, none of this was known to Nolan. He had a very happy childhood, despite the consequences he was born into. Norman and Caroline gave him all the care and love any child could need. Norman raised the boy as if he were his own son. In fact, Norman was still young enough that Nolan could have been his son, since Eliza was so young when she gave birth to him. Norman started teaching Nolan everything that he would need to know if he were to become a rancher- how to take care of animals and plants; how to ride a horse and various other things that are involved in ranch activity. Even though Nolan was technically fatherless for the first five years of his life, Norman took full role of his father, until James returned from war.
James was a changed man when he returned from the horrors of war. He suffered from severe depression and PTSD from his experiences and was no longer the man that Eliza had fallen in love with. She, however, once again against her parents' wishes, stayed with him, hoping that she could bring back her high school sweetheart. At first, when James returned, he had thought Eliza had cheated on him while he was away and Nolan was not his child. If not for Nolan's shocking red hair and the dates on the birth certificate and other medical records, he probably would have completely denied Nolan as his child. Once he had accepted that he was a father, Eliza, James, and Nolan moved into their own place, and the problems began.
Eliza was the main provider for their family in almost all ways. James was denied from many jobs due to his PTSD diagnosis and he had to go through constant therapy to try to combat it. Ultimately, it resulted in his turning to alcohol and drugs to escape his suffering. He had both his good and bad days. On the good days, he was almost the same man that Eliza has fallen in love with and gave her hope that he would return. On his bad days, he was also abusive towards Eliza, who was fighting so hard just to get the man that she had fallen in love with back. Nolan was oblivious to the abuse that his mother was going through as she tried to keep it away from him and protect him. She tried to cover the bruises and wounds and the abuse she faced while her husband faced his demons. Caroline and Norman were still very present within Nolan's life, as he often spent much time on their ranch. For two years she was able to keep up the façade that things were fine, and then she became pregnant for a second time.
With Eliza's second pregnancy, James seemed to gain more of his old self back. The abuse ceased and he started to take responsibility. He got a job, although low income. Seeing that he was indeed responsible for creating new lives somehow seemed to resonate within him. So at seven years old, Nolan became a big brother to a little sister, Amanda. James seemed to finally be recovering from war, at least for awhile, but slowly his demons began to haunt him again. One fateful night about two years after Amanda was born, they finally returned and James and Eliza got into a fight. Unfortunately, a nine-year-old Nolan was witness to this, and much more competent than he was before. He took his two-year-old sister, whom he loved very much, and ran away to the safest place he knew - their grandparent's ranch.
A custody battle ensued and ultimately Norman and Caroline gained custody of Nolan and Amanda. Along with monetary issues, neither James or Eliza seemed to be clean of drugs or alcohol and were deemed unfit to be parents. The rest you could say was history. Norman and Caroline raised both Nolan and Amanda as if they were their own children. Eliza and James saw their children from time to time, but ultimately they didn't see their children as part of the life they wanted to live. When Nolan was about fourteen and Amanda was twelve, Eliza died from an accidental drug overdose, having dug herself more deeply in the world of drugs after losing her children, and husband. James had decided to try to clean up his act, unlike his wife, and went back into the armed forces - ultimately gaining much respect and recognition.
Nolan did quite well in school, although he was clearly no genius. He enjoyed reading books, especially where he could escape to another world. Nolan did, however, have some trouble making friends and often ended up finding comfort in his "friends" - the animals back at the ranch. He helped with all the chores on the ranch and never complained, enjoying the hard work and its rewards. His sister, of course, ended up being the more social, more intelligent one, and in his opinion better looking one; but Nolan didn't seem to mind. He was very protective and loving of Amanda. Despite their darker past with their parents, the remainder of their lives seemed to be mostly bump free. Norman, deciding that Nolan was the son he never had, made a decision that when he died, he would pass the ranch on to Nolan's care. He had a large compassionate heart for animals and Norman had taught him everything he knew.
With such a large responsibility on his shoulders, Nolan decided to take a trip after he graduated from school. He wanted to learn more about ranching and experience the world. He wanted to be able to bring these experiences and knowledge back to his grandfather's ranch and make it an even better place. Although sad to see him go, his grandparents saw him off and wished him luck on his travels. Amanda wasn't as understanding, not wanting to see him leave. This is what brought Nolan to Efkeria two years ago, finding a place as a ranch hand on the ranch that was recovering from the Harvest King's wrathful winter.
