xxxCuriosity killed the cat, and she should have known better than to do research on the odd, tattoo-like markings that had appeared on her skin. It shouldn’t have mattered, anyways. Every foster family ended up not wanting her for some reason or another, and somehow Roxanne getting blamed with getting multiple tattoos would be another reason this family could add to their list of reasons as to why they would eventually “return her”, as she had begun referring to it as. Discovering the marks were that of a demon that fed off from the negative emotions of others, it just seemed to explain everything in her life. Maybe her birth parents had some idea about what was going to happen, so they just put into the foster care system instead. It explained how she just always looked for trouble and found enjoyment in seeing others being picked on in school. In the end, she couldn’t help but to hate what she was. She had no choice to run away from it all.

Never in the multiple attempts had Roxanne made, had she ever found a single place where she could actually believe she fit in with others. Every place where she had found, or tried to find employment, always asked about the supposed tattoos on her body. The only thing she could ever say that they were from a stupid bet she had taken part in. What was she supposed to say: that she had marks of some demon on her and fed off from people’s emotions? Even if she did get hired somewhere, she eventually got fired for some reason. It was truly nothing new to her. A part of her was hoping that things here would be different from everything else, though.

Roxanne had heard things about this coffee shop around town. Apparently, it was supposed to be a good spot to just relax and such. It was in such a seemingly secluded area, but yet quite a bit of word got around this place. Someone had told her that the employees always seemed a bit odd in ways they could ever just exactly place their fingers on. It sounded like a good place for her to just try to find some peace of mind and relax for once.

Some people seemed to linger in the streets, but as far as she knew, none of them had the emotions that she absolutely adored. Negativity always showed itself in places, which Roxanne loved. If there was no trouble, she was bound to try and cause some herself. No, she had to refrain from acting like that now. The last thing she needed now was for everyone to think that she actually was different than most everyone else. Besides, the looks she got when her sleeves slipped back and her supposed tattoos were exposed was enough trouble for her, at the moment.

As she walked into the coffee shop, Roxanne didn’t find anything too odd about it; besides the name it had been given. Its odd traits were what had attracted her to it, though, or at least what people had told her seemed to give off a bit of an odd tone. Her brown eyes scanned over the shop, attempting to take everything in. Maybe everything she had been told had been a misunderstanding. Hoping to just find some clarification of what she had heard, Roxanne crossed her arms and sat down at a nearby table.

XTABITHAXXelizabethXXCARTERX

xxxThe last thing Tabitha was expecting was for Kristian to come into the room. Hearing the other’s voice, she jumped slightly from being unaware of presence until she had spoken. Undressing? She never undressed with the door wide open, excluding a few times in the past. And dear god, her step-sister seeing her change definitely wouldn’t be too great of an experience, or at least it was that way in her own opinion. Really, she didn’t really to look like anymore of a fool around the other, now. Kristian must have realized that she wasn’t undressing or anything of the sort later than she had assumed. A bit of a stifled laugh escaped as she heard her step-sister speak again. Awkward moments were practically her whole life. As soon as she was around someone she wasn’t too familiar with, that was when the stuttering and just overall awful conversational skills kicked into gear.

”T-Tabitha. My name’s Tabitha.” She felt like running out of room or at least something like that, now. Now she couldn’t even introduce herself without getting nervous and stuttering like a complete idiot. Tabitha didn’t doubt that even the smallest feelings she had towards Kristian didn’t help her case in the slightest bit. It never was, especially if the other somehow found out how she felt for her. Still, she couldn’t help but to wonder if her step-sister had came out of her own free will, or if her father—her now step-father—had made her come by her room and see her. Really, it didn’t matter to Tabitha, in the end. To her, it was going to be better than things were previously since she wasn’t going to be stuck alone in a house with her mother. Tabitha still wasn’t too sure if Kristian was glad about the events or not, even if she just had welcomed her to the family. Well, at least things, hopefully, wouldn’t be too bad for the two of them.

Tabitha knew that she had made it known that she was acting like her usual self, now. Sadly, her parents seemed to be the only ones that were aware that she could actually be somewhat outgoing and speak without her voice attempting to fail her. She hoped this behavior wouldn’t continue for too much longer; she didn’t want it to seem like she just couldn’t associate with others at all. So, her step-father was a bit on the strange side? That already sounded like a good change from the temperamental person that was her mother (she was more-so bipolar, or at least in Tabitha’s opinion). ”And just to warn you, my mom isn’t usually as sweet as sugar, despite how she’s been acting lately.” Maybe it was possible that her mother had turned over a new leaf since she was finally in a steady relationship. Somehow, Tabitha was able to highly doubt that. Noticing that Kristian was now near her and that she was smiling, she let a small smile of her own appear. Taking the offer that was given to her, Tabitha got up and glanced around the room for a moment.

”If you really want to?” Tabitha hadn’t meant for her statement to come out as more of a question, but she was unsure of how she was supposed to respond to her step-sister. She had to have something she would rather be doing rather than trying to help her unpack everything within the boxes. Maybe it was possible that she didn’t seem like she was the type to be a major packrat, but she definitely was one. Her response to the next question was a nod. Of course, a few of her mother’s things could have been accidentally placed into one of her boxes, but for the most part, everything within them was her own. Half of the books that she had even thought of packing into the boxes were ones that she couldn’t even finish a first time, let alone to be even slightly interested in them. Still, even with all of the junk she had packed, there were still some important things lingering within the boxes. ”Surprisingly, it is; I’m sure some of my mom’s crap got put into my boxes, though.” It had to be surprising that someone such as herself would actually even think of owning so much. Of course, thanks to being her packrat self, more than likely, she wasn’t even going to need half of what the boxes contained.

Kristian was sorry? It wasn’t even her fault for this whole ordeal, but yet she was apologizing like she was the conspirator behind the plan of their parents getting married. Tabitha shook her head before verbally replying to her step-sister. ”It’s not your fault. I’m sort of hoping this whole marriage thing might help my mom. The two of us haven’t had a good relationship in years, and she needs one.” Like she could have even given a damn. Now, she was rambling about her personal life to Kristian like she was her therapist or something. Still, what she had said was the truth. The relationship between herself and her mother had suffered greatly since she had gone through the divorce. It just seemed like now the two of them were from two totally different worlds, nor did it seem like they were even mother and daughter now, at this point. At least as her conversation with the other continued, her conversational skills seemed to increase to a slightly higher level; thankfully, now the stuttering had ceased, at least for now. It was impossible for Tabitha not to feel a bit nervous, though, especially with the person she had feelings for in such a close vicinity to her.

She had never handled even the slightest crushes she had too well. Never. Obviously, there was no change in this situation. Really, it had surprised Tabitha that she could have a crush on someone like Kristian. It wasn’t that the other female was bad or anything, it was just the fact that the two of them just seemed to so different from each other. She needed to get her mind off from her crush. The last thing she needed for that little detail to slip out and it would be worse if word of it was somehow able to reach her mother. ”So, um, you’re in a couple of my classes, right?” Changing the subject— real smooth move. It was the best she could do, though.

xxxSo, it was true. When it came to others having powers or were some type of supernatural being, Clarity hadn’t been lying. That was a definite relief for Roxanne. From the parts of the conversation the others were having that she had heard, she could only assume that they were discussing the very things that made them different from many other people. Another female and two males. The two males seemed to be calm individuals, but she couldn’t think the same when it came to the other female in the room. Although, none of them seemed to be too socially awkward, or as far as she knew, the three seemed to be able to handle themselves well around others. Well, there went the idea that she would be able to fit in with these people easily and near perfectly. Still, the relief that she wasn’t exactly alone after everything she had gone through lingered and was helping her through the current situation.

It was odd to Roxanne that the other girl could find her power so displeasing; even to get to the point of considering it to be “lame”. Then again, in her opinion, practically anything was better than what she was dealing with and everything she had to put up with. There was a slight possibility that she had a spark of jealousy within her that this girl could at least have an ability she could conceal and could at least try to have a normal social life. Being able to make what you imagined a reality just seemed so much better than what she could do, or at least it seemed that way, in Roxanne’s opinion. Still, due to coming into the current conversation a bit late, she was unaware of what the two males could do or if they were some other race.

The last thing she had been expecting was for one of the people in the room to have feelings of anxiousness and fear. Dear god, she couldn’t help but to admit to herself she was glad that one of them was feeling this way. Well, at least Roxanne knew that she was still able to be her usual, slightly sadistic self, even around other supernatural individuals. She wasn’t exactly expecting this girl to be the one to be feeling such emotions, especially with how happy and optimistic she had just seemed moments ago. At least this one was able to display one of her favorite emotions. There was just something about fear that satisfied her best, but heart break was definitely a close second. Roxanne was curious as to why she could even be feeling this way. That wasn’t the best topic to bring up, though, especially since it seemed that would be differing from the topic of the ongoing conversation the others were having.

It seemed as quickly as the fearful and anxious emotions had started, they had ceased. So, she found her power childish, as well? To Roxanne, having a supposed childish power was definitely better than being some sadistic creature. She couldn’t herself let even the slightest bit of jealousy take over her actions, though. The last thing she needed to do in front of these people was to completely lose her temper, especially since it wasn’t a pretty one, at all. Roxanne had been lost in her thoughts, and having a bit of the negative emotions around her had definitely made her lose herself in thoughts even further, if that was even possible. She hadn’t been expecting the other to come over near her and speak to her. Great, now she could just display how socially awkward she was to everyone in the room.

”I’m Roxanne,” she stated as calmly as she possibly could. It was horrible to Roxanne that she actually had to make herself act even slightly considerate. Well, it was more-so her nature to irritate someone or to cause some type of fear to shoot through them. It was just how she had ended up, and as much as she tried, she could never seem to stop herself from being rude or inconsiderate in one way or another. ”N-Nice to meet you, too,” Roxanne mumbled as she shook the others’ hand. At least she was still able to bring the manners she had learned years ago to the surface, or at least when she wanted them to do so. She hadn’t meant to stutter like a fool, though. Acting even slightly considerate, especially after getting her fill of one of her preferred emotions, it just seemed like poison to try and act like she didn’t have even the smallest piece of a sadistic side.

She didn’t want to say what she was, or at least not yet. It was the one subject that Roxanne absolutely despised to have brought up in a conversation, even if only hinted at her difference. The anger she had towards herself and what she was still remained. It was what made her so cruel and uncaring before. If they knew, Roxanne at least thought that might see her in some different light. It seemed like for once in her life, she cared about how others saw her. As long as she could keep the fact from them that she was a demon that just had to love negativity of all things, the better things would be for her.

KATHERINE anne CHRISTOPHER

XKatherine didn’t even want to go to this wedding. It was all her father’s doing, not her own. She didn’t even know the people that were getting hitched, but she had to go? It sounded like complete bullshit. Maybe her outlook on the whole event would have a brighter one, if she actually knew these people. Apparently, her father knew them, though, and was enough for him to force her to go to the wedding. Besides, weddings had never been an event that Katherine looked forward to. Going to a few of them, thanks to either bride or groom being related her, and having an awful time definitely didn’t help her opinion of them one bit. Still, she had failed to change her father’s mind. Apparently, she would be attending this wedding, like it or not—and the latter of those fit her mood towards the event.

It just seemed like this wedding was going to bring together some of the things Katherine hated the most all into one event. Things could have possibly been a little better for her, if she would have gotten rid of her pessimistic views against the wedding. Her relationship with her father was strained, though, which caused them to butt heads constantly. Of course, she had lost, yet again, another one of her confrontations with her father. Dressing up wasn’t something that she enjoyed too much. That was what Katherine was being forced to do, though. At least she did have some sort of taste in good attire, unlike her father. Another trait she could possibly thank her seemingly nonexistent mother. Thankfully, her father hadn’t married, since that would probably just make things even worse between the two of them. This was a wedding for two other people. So this couldn’t be as bad as her father getting remarried. Although, it always seemed like nothing could make Katherine too happy.

The wedding didn’t really turn out to be all that bad after all. Maybe it was the fact that one of her friends had been there, too; Katherine was still unaware of how the guy even got an invitation to the wedding in the first place. If anything, she bet that his situation was more than likely similar to her own. Of course, he didn’t have as much as a pessimistic view on the event as she did. That at least she hadn’t been alone during the torture. Really, being at some wedding was the last way she had wanted to spend the few remaining days of her summer vacation. The whole ordeal wasn’t exactly entertaining to Katherine, but it wasn’t as bad as she had imagined it would be. It seemed like the worse part of the whole event was the fact that she had to dress up, pretend like she gave a damn and to try and act proper. To hell with the last one, though. The lecture she had been given, thanks to her father, about acting proper in public and especially at events such as these didn’t phase her one bit, apparently. One thing had definitely shut her up, but it wasn’t anything she, or anyone else at that, would even think of being drawn to.

Katherine had never expected that Jane would be at this wedding, too. The thought of even attempting to do something to the other girl didn’t cross her mind for two main reasons. Firstly, she knew her father would kill her if she decided to pull some stupid stunt here in front of people he knew. Secondly, well, she couldn’t even really describe it too well herself. Jane had cleaned up well—very well. At first, she couldn’t even bring herself to believe that this was the same girl that she was known to pick on when she had the chance to do so. Surprisingly, now she was feeling a bit guilty for some of the insults she had previously thrown at the girl. Katherine knew she had no excuse as to way she had treated her that way either; she knew anything she could throw out wouldn’t be a great excuse. Actually, she knew that there was really no excusing how she had acted. Now, it seemed like that life had just stabbed her in the back. Karma definitely seemed like a b***h, to her.

Going back to school was another concept that Katherine didn’t enjoy too much. School wasn’t all that bad, if you took out the part about having to actually do work and keep up with grades. That was what made up most of school, though, which definitely wasn’t much of a pleaser, or at least in her opinion. It wasn’t like Katherine had been able to completely enjoy her final days off from school after the wedding had ended. Even she found it extremely odd that she couldn’t stop thinking about Jane in some way or another. She should have known that something bad was going to happen at that wedding, even if she hadn’t been meaning for anything to happen. She was falling for the very person she picked on, and she knew she was falling for her hard.

Thankfully, nothing about these feelings seemed to reach anyone within the school. For such a thing to happen would be one of her worst nightmares, as true as her feelings were. The first day back to school seemed as dull as any other within the building was throughout the school year. At least after this year, she would finally get out of this damn school and pretty much everyone that was in it. Well, that would happen as long as she didn’t allow her grades to slip to the point of failing. Even throughout the school day, when her glancing led her to looking at Jane somehow, which just brought back the thoughts she had about the other girl. It seemed obsessive, but maybe it was the guilt that was partially driving her to these feelings for the other girl. The day seemed to drag on, and when the final bell finally rang, it had felt years had passed by since the beginning of the day instead of mere hours.

Only lingering around her locker for a few moments, Katherine at least wanted to speak to Jane in some form. It was odd that she even wanted to speak to her without any cruel intentions in mind, but ever since that wedding, it just felt like the ability to do anything to the girl had been stripped from her. When she finally strayed away from her own locker and decided to finally leave, Katherine stopped the moment she noticed that Jane was still within the building, too. This seemed to be her only shot at having a chance to speak to her alone. ”I can’t believe you let the day pass without even speaking to me. And I thought we had a bond forming, my dear,” Katherine stated in a slight mocking tone as she approached Jane. Maybe that wasn’t exactly the best way to start off her conversation. Well, now, that would just have to do. ”Let me just cut the chase and everything, and then we can both just get out of here.” The last thing she wanted to do was to stay at the school when she didn’t need to be there. Obviously, she believed that she had much better things to do at times than to be school on her own time. At least if some negative reaction or outburst was to come from what she about to tell Jane, the two of them would practically be alone in the hallways. It seemed like a lot more than just Katherine found the idea of getting out of school as possible a great one. ”I saw you at that wedding,” she began, trying to keep her voice steady, ”and you looked absolutely stunning,” she concluded, finally complimenting the other on the appearance and attire she had been bearing at the wedding. ”Jane,” she began in a slight mumble, ”I-I think, wait, I know, I have some sort of feelings for you.”

This was absolutely embarrassing. She just admitted to the girl she picked on that she now had feelings for her. Oh, how she hoped that the other would believe her and not just assume that she was just trying to mess with her head. Katherine was trying to fight the feeling of blushing, but she assumed that she had probably failed at making that happen. If things would just take a turn for the best here, everything would be good for her. If only she hadn’t been so cruel to the other before, though. Maybe she would have noticed such things about Jane much earlier than a week or so ago.

xHearing Kristian giggle, even if she doubted that it was meant to be a negative gesture, wasn’t helping her too much. She knew that her odd social mannerisms were showing, but it wasn’t like she could stop herself from acting in such a way, though. It was just how Tabitha always had been, and she hoped that would change, even if was just slightly, with a little more time. With the slight embarrassment that she was feeling, Tabitha knew that her blushing wasn’t just a threat. No, she had already started blushing before she could think of stopping herself. Great. This wasn’t what she needed now. Tabitha had to look on the bright side, though. Things, definitely, could have been worse. ”You too,” she said while trying to fight off her blushing. Of course, she of all people had to be one of the slightly shy ones.

Even the dating of her mother and step-father was a sudden event to her, let alone their engagement. To Tabitha it seemed like they had barely even been dating before her mother came home with the news. Hopefully, this marriage wouldn’t end in a nasty divorce just like her previous one had. As long as that didn’t happen, there was a chance that things between herself and her mother could take a turn for the better. Tabitha knew that she needed someone else in her life, but the decision had just seemed a little rushed, in her opinion. Still, if her mother was happy, she was going to have to try her best to happy, too. Tabitha tried her best to not mentally scoff the positive comment about her mother, but that failed. So, it wasn’t like her mother was an awful woman or anything, but the fact that their relationship wasn’t exactly great didn’t help a thing between the two of them. Neither of them seemed to try and help the situation, though. It always seemed like their relationship was going down and nowhere else. ”We just don’t have a great relationship. I’ve always been closer to my dad, anyways.” And there went more out about her damned family life. Who even cared about it? Obviously she did, but Tabitha was able to doubt that practically anyone else could have cared less about it.

Tabitha let out a small sigh as she leaned down and put everything back into the box that she had taken out previously. She’d have to find somewhere to put what she had brought along with her, but that could always be a problem that she could solve later. As long as nothing that she actually cared about was ruined, Tabitha could have cared less about what happened to the unneeded things she had brought. She couldn't help but slightly laugh at her step-sister's attempt at some humor while standing back up. ”Well, you asked for it then, remember,” Tabitha said, making her own shabby attempt at some humor. Well, at least she found her attempt better at staying quiet or embarrassing herself somehow. Oh hell, practically anything was better than embarrassing herself. ”Eh, if there is any of her stuff in these boxes, it won’t be much.”

If there was one thing that Tabitha wanted to do now, it was to just sit down and somehow relax. Still, it wasn’t like the boxes were just going to unpack themselves, but, oh, how she wished that they could perform such a task. Tomorrow was school, too. Damn. That just meant that this would definitely have to be done before she decided to go to bed tonight. Compared to what she would facing with unpacking and trying to put everything away, though, having school tomorrow would probably seem like a relief in comparison. When Tabitha heard Kristian say that she somehow felt like it was her fault that she was in this situation, she was definitely puzzled. She wasn’t the one that had married her mother, right? Besides, she had no problems with step-father so far, and things would stay that way, hopefully. ”Really, it’s not anyone’s fault. It’s not we could have stopped them from getting hitched, anyways.” Tabitha hoped that the words would just sink into her step-sister’s mind and just stop blaming herself for the situation. Besides, if she would have truly believed that it was Kristian or anyone’s fault for even a simple issue, Tabitha knew she wouldn’t be acting so open or too kind to them. Whether or not it was good to hold a grudge that was exactly what she did at times. At least she had no reason to hold a grudge against the other.

Oh, relationships. Her experience with relationships was nonexistent, and Tabitha knew that was a cold, hard fact. Nearly eighteen and she still hadn’t been in a relationship. It sounded pathetic to her and she knew that it had to sound the same to others, too. It seemed like practically everyone at school was with someone currently, or at least they had been in at least one relationship before. And Tabitha, well, it was like she was the only one that had never been in some sort of commitment, even though she knew that not everyone had dated before. It was embarrassing, definitely. ”Well, um, I’ve never been in a relationship. I’ve never really wanted to date much,” Tabitha explained, sighing softly.

Tabitha shook her head as she saw the other attempting to open one of the better taped boxes with just her hands alone. Somehow, she doubted that it would work, and wasn’t too surprised when she gave up on the task. Walking over to the box and her step-sister, she pulled a pocket knife out of her back pocket before kneeling down. ”This’ll do,” Tabitha mumbled as she flipped the blade open and ran its sharpened edge carefully along the tape. Before turning her attention back towards Kristian, she closed the knife, not wanting some freak accident to occur. Knowing her, it was definitely possible for something like that to happen. ”I thought so. It’s sort of hard to miss the hair of many colors, you know.” Tabitha smirked at the comment she had made, hoping to get her point across that she had just been playing around with the other. She always seemed to notice when her step-sister’s hair color changed, but that was a detail that was a bit hard to miss. With her free hand, Tabitha pushed her glasses back up where they belonged, knowing that it was probably time to at least get a pair that didn’t bother her as much or slip out of place so easily. ”Ever thought of sticking with that color, though? It doesn’t look bad, just in case my opinion would, somehow, matter to you.”

xThe occasional silence was beginning to get to Tabitha. Conversation was able to distract her from most of the other thoughts running through her head, and with no conversing happening at that moment, there was nothing else that could truly distract her. Thankfully, after giving herself a bit of time to calm down, though, her blushing faded away as if it had never even been present on her cheeks. Not even her previous crushes had been able to get her to act in such a way, and this new reaction she was having towards a crush wasn’t something that Tabitha completely enjoyed. On the other hand, though, at least she knew that these weren’t some pressured or fake feelings. Still, this was her step-sister, not some person she didn’t have such relations with. Though, when Kristian seemed to cover her own cheeks, Tabitha was definitely puzzled. Maybe she was overreacting to a simple action. That had to be it. ”Oh, yeah, that’s how it goes.”

After stopping to think for a moment, maybe it was wrong to say that her relationship with her mother wasn’t too great. It couldn’t really be as bad as she had made it sound. The relationship that the two of them had was probably one of the many, typical relations that teenagers had with their parents, for the most part. The bickering between the two of them didn’t help anything either. If Tabitha wanted her relationship with her mother to actually get somewhat better, it seemed like she was going to have to be the one to take the first step in doing so. If only strengthening her bond with her mother was as easy as it was getting to be able to speak to her step-sister. Oh, Tabitha knew that she could only wish for that task to be so simple. ”He is, or at least that’s my opinion,” she stated with a small tone of amusement in her voice. Of course, Tabitha was going to think that her own father was a great guy. That was one relationship of hers that was strong, as well as a good one.

A celebration for unpacking boxes on a weekend—that was definitely something new, or at least it was to Tabitha. Kristian seemed like the creative type, or that and a bit of eccentricity thrown into that. She couldn’t say that she didn’t like that about the other, though, because it was something that she truly liked. Tabitha was certain of what Kristian was referring to high school as—hell. Really, with that point, she couldn’t disagree with her. High school was definitely not one of those aspects of her life that she found to be too grand or exciting. If you weren’t the top dogs, high school didn’t really seem like anyone’s cup of tea. At least she wasn’t in the feeling that high school was some earthly embodiment of hell. Tabitha couldn’t help but to grin as she replied, ”You mean, hell.” Obviously, she wasn’t too afraid to speak her mind about high school.

This girl always seemed to be puzzling her in some way or another, which made Tabitha slightly uneasy. Not knowing what she was doing in order to cause her step-sister to react in the ways that she did made her worry even the slightest bit. It was nothing, or at least that was what she kept trying to tell herself. Tabitha hoped that with more time, she would no longer react in such a way to Kristian’s actions. Of course, she knew it was probably due to the unfamiliarity between the two of them, which would eventually fade. At least the first part of what she had said was true. They wouldn’t have been able to stop their parents from getting married. Of course, Tabitha was able to slightly detest this fact, since it meant that the type of relationship she wanted with the other would never happen, if she could even find it in her to have the same feelings she held inside herself. ”Yeah. Things were definitely a bit awkward with just my mother and I living together.”

Of course, the talk of relationships came back up; it always seemed to, especially when she didn’t want that to happen. Kristian was right: they were so filled with drama, especially in high school. For once, Tabitha was actually a bit glad that she wasn’t, or never had been, in a real relationship with someone else. Of course, even if she wasn’t in some relationship, that wasn’t some free pass for her to avoid rumors. No, rumors were always spread. That was just common sense when it came to the everyday life within any high school. ”Kristian,” she began with the bit of amusement she had earlier, now absent from her voice, ”I definitely don’t escape rumors, trust me.” Tabitha found it as some relief to know that she would never be the only one within her school to have a rumor about them spread throughout the student body. ”I mean, obviously, everyone knew I was gay before I even knew!” Tabitha said with the amusing tone finding its way back into her voice, and shakily laughing at her own remark. It all seemed so true, or at least it did to her.

Her step-sister seemed to have cursed at the box quite a few times before Tabitha had made her way over it and opened it with ease, thanks to her pocket knife. ”No problem,” she replied as she watched Kristian look at the boxes contents. Thankfully, there was nothing in there to be embarrassed due to her step-sister seeing it. That wasn’t what she needed, at this point. Thankfully, her small joke towards the other’s ever-changing hair color didn’t offend her. Offending Kristian was certainly one of the last things she wanted to do. If Tabitha would have known what her step-sister was going to do as she leaned closer to her, she might have tried to stop it. Instead, she didn’t know what the other was doing until the moment her glasses easily slipped off, thanks to some persuasion by the girl. Contacts would make her eyes pop? That was definitely a new remark to her. The only time she even tried to wear her contacts were on the weekends. With that comment, the pink tint that indicated her blushing returned onto her face.

Of course, the comment had made her slightly nervous, only due to the fact that it was her crush commenting her and not just some person she didn’t have such feelings for. ”T-Thanks.” The stuttering just had to return, too. Tabitha knew she had to get her mind off what the other had said, or at least for the most part. She picked her glasses up from the surface that they had fallen onto before standing up. ”Really, I think we should skip this unpacking part, or at least put it off for a bit. I’m tired of looking at goddamn boxes,” Tabitha stated as she stood up and returned her knife to her back pocket.

xAs their conversation continued, Tabitha was becoming more comfortable with speaking to the other and the occasional silence that occurred wasn’t as awkward anymore. All she needed was time. No matter how comfortable she was able to be around Kristian, though, she knew that as long as their parents were married, they couldn’t be more than step-sisters. Besides, for all she knew, the other didn’t even like her on that level. Having that little flicker of hope within her was enough for Tabitha, at the moment. As long as both them of continued to get along, she knew that she’d be fine, or at least it would be good enough for her. Actually being able to be with Kristian in the sort of relationship she wanted them to have probably wouldn’t happen. Getting her hopes up was the last thing she was going to do in this situation. Her attention was dragged from her thoughts and back to her step-sister, though, as soon she heard the other speak to her. ”I wouldn’t worry about sounding idiotic. I’m not the type to pick on others, mind you,” Tabitha replied to the other female with a small smile.

So, her step-father could be a stick in the mud? Well, that was a lot better than the multitude of other things that he could be. It definitely sounded better than having no father figure at all, though. Maybe it was just her own views on the subject, but that was how Tabitha mentally approached the thoughts. Of course, she had to admit that her own father could be a stick in the mud when he wanted to act that way. She had always found those times the worst to be around her father, even if now it was rare when she was able to see him. ”Eh, he tries to act cool, and fails at it.” That was definitely the truth there. The man always tried to catch up what was “in style” whenever she visited. Hopefully, some of those actions were just acting on his part.

At least there was one thing that Tabitha knew she had in common with Kristian: both of them found high school and hell synonyms. Practically anyone you asked would believe that high school was hell, though. It truly was, or at least that was what Tabitha believed, and would probably always believe it to be. The place wouldn’t be so bad, if rumors and social statuses didn’t exist. Although, since such things did exist, it made the entire experience of high school horrible it seemed. At least there were some good aspects to high school. Not all of it was bad, as long as you seemed to know your way around everything that was. ”Of course. It’s not high school without some sort of torture,” she stated with a short, stifled sigh.

”Damn right” It was true. Everything just seemed to be based off from rumors and false accusations. Of course, society always seemed to choose to believe those over the truth from the person being framed. And tomorrow, Tabitha knew that it would be time to, once again, face the torture that was high school for five days straight. If only she could just get a break from it the same cycle for a day or two. That would be great, but she doubted that it would actually ever happen. ”My mom and I?” she questioned slightly as the subject within their conversation seemed to switch, once more. ”Things were just average, I guess. It was just always weird to me to not have my dad around.”

To Tabitha, it was no surprise to her that she was a bit puzzled as soon as she saw how Kristian had reacted to something she had stated. The last thing she wanted was to be embarrassed by the other, though, that had already seemed to happen a few times already. It wasn’t a bit awkward for her to admit her sexuality to the other, though. For one, it wouldn’t have surprised her if her step-sister already knew, thanks to how rumors and such always spread like a wildfire among the student body of the school. Also, the fact that the other had mentioned that she had an ex-girlfriend, which meant that she wasn’t quite straight either. That was definitely some relief for Tabitha. At least at home she wouldn’t have to deal with any of the taunting people always seemed to bring up against her.

All she could do was nod in reply to Kristian as she spoke. The last part just seemed to stick with her a bit longer than the rest of what she had said, though. The last statement just seemed to apply to her situation with rumors to the dot. Even once she had come out, though, it seemed like her reputation never seemed to repair itself. That didn’t completely surprise her, seeing how some idiotic some of her classmates could actually be. Once again, Tabitha realized that her step-sister had a point with what she had said, or at least most of it. Someone’s sexuality just seemed to be a favorite thing for others to spread rumors about, of course. ”I can’t really argue with you there.” Tabitha was a bit confused at what Kristian had said last, though. Did she come off as the type to worry too much about what others thought about her? If she did, that wouldn’t surprise her at all. She simply nodded as her reply towards the last statement.

Seeing her step-sister smiling, Tabitha smiled a bit herself. It always seemed like that every time she was even slightly embarrassed, everything either came out wrong or she was too quiet. ”Oh, um, I have some, but I just don’t wear them all the time.” At least that knocked one problem out of the way, for now. She never did wear the contacts she had much, but the compliment she received from Kristian was, definitely, bound to change that. Tabitha gave the other a slight apologetic look before slipping her glasses back onto her face. She didn’t need to walk around without glasses or contacts, especially with her bad eyesight. Besides, taking them off for too long always resulted in a headache. ”Alright then. I just want to get out of this house. I don’t care what we do, as long as we can get out of here.” Getting along with her step-sister definitely didn’t seem as difficult as she once believed that it was going to be. That didn’t exactly help the issue of her crush towards the other, but at least they weren’t fighting or anything of that sort. This was a lot better than having to fight with someone, especially the one she’d be living with.

xReading someone’s body language wasn’t exactly Tabitha’s forte. Obviously, her skill at the task wasn’t improving anytime soon, seeing that Kristian’s wasn’t really clear to her. Attempting to study it didn’t seem like a great idea, since the last thing she needed to do was come off as off-beat to the other. As if she didn’t embarrass herself enough without interacting with other people. Tabitha forgot about her confusion, for the most part at least, as the topic of teasing reappeared. She knew that when she did such a thing, it was obvious that it was only to be playful on the rare occasions when it did occur. Truthfully, Tabitha didn’t even know if she had it in her to pick on anyone in a cruel manner, especially towards her step-sister. ”I doubt I have it in me to act like that. Besides, when I do tease, it’s nothing personal,” she replied after shaking her head. Really, she would have no room to be able to taunt others, especially with how much people seemed to like to make her the center of some idiotic joke. At least she knew better than to believe the remarks that those individuals would make.

As the other brought up the point of where their parents were, it made Tabitha begin to ponder where they were. It wouldn’t have surprised her if they were off “bonding” or whatever they wanted to label whatever the hell they were doing. Oh, that really wasn’t too pleasant of a thing to think about, especially with some of the things that her mother could refer to as bonding with her step-father. She grinned as she heard the remark about her father. What Kristian had said seemed to describe some of his actions perfectly. Acting cool was definitely something that her father wasn’t too great at, and it showed constantly. He can pull off one of his cool acts, sometimes. Of course, that always seems like after he fails at it a few hundred times,” Tabitha replied with amused tone, once again, returning within her voice.

The bit of amusement she had left almost as soon as it came, or at least it seemed that way. Bringing up school was never really a cheery topic, which could explain the sudden shift in her mood. Tabitha bit down softly on her bottom lip for a moment as she listened to her step-sister speak. At least when it came to them getting along that just seemed to happen easily, maybe even a bit naturally to her. It seemed like her views on high school life matched seamlessly with Kristian’s. High school really wouldn’t be as bad as she found it to be, if people could have a bit of decency, which would probably never happen. It was a better thought than some of the more pessimistic points she could have brought up. ”Seriously. But, somehow I think it’s nearly impossible for our school to somehow turn completely innocent anytime soon.”

At least after finishing her senior year of high school, Tabitha knew that she probably wouldn’t have to deal with most of the people she despised anymore or at least for quite awhile. Most of the people she knew from her school, she knew she would probably never be sad to see them leave her life. Of course, there were the few people that she actually would miss. One thing Tabitha knew she wouldn’t miss, though, was all of the labels and put-downs that were such a common thing now. Hopefully, everything outside of high school would lead to so much better things.

Being able to relate to her step-sister was definitely an advantage. Tabitha was able to understand where Kristian was coming from, and she was pretty sure that the other was able to do the same, too. Unlike her though, she knew what it was like to only have one parent around, except that one parent was her mother, which Tabitha knew wasn’t the case with her step-sister. Still, the life the two of them had lived with single parents seemed to be enough to make it to where they were able to relate well enough to each other. ”I only see my dad during the summer and winter holidays, since he moved out of the state,” she muttered a bit absentmindedly. Tabitha knew this was why on the time she did see her father, she always had to catch him up on what all was going on in her life while he seemed to adapt to changes.

The only little issue that the two of them had actually had a bit trouble adjusting to was her sexuality. The fact didn’t matter to her father, in the end, and Tabitha knew that was a fact. Also, she knew, though, that he was still trying to get the fact stuck into his head that she was gay. Surprisingly, it hadn’t taken much time at all for her mother to get used to it. Maybe it did show that they had a better relationship than what Tabitha had originally thought. Still, she still had doubts that her mother would be too accepting of her current crush, even if it wasn’t like she could actually stop herself from liking the other. No, this wasn’t something that her mother, or anyone at that, could control and cease.

Tabitha laughed more towards herself than to anybody in general after hearing Kristian suddenly, and seemingly excitedly, changed the subject of their discussion. She couldn’t blame the other for changing the subject, though, since bringing up school during a weekend wasn’t exactly that was too joyful; it was more depressing so it seemed, in this case. Maybe it was just because she knew that school was going to be slightly different now. Really, living with someone you were actually just getting to know and attending school with them too had to be nerve-racking to someone else besides her. Confusion seemed to take over once again as she looked at her step-sister, seeing her purposely putting stands of her hair into her face. Tabitha was never going to be able to understand this girl, was she?

The topic of her glasses and the possibility of contacts still hadn’t died down with Kristian, so it seemed. Obviously, she was curious, maybe even to the level of wanting to label it as being a bit nosy, but Tabitha didn’t really mind what the other was doing. Whether she minded or not, she knew that bits of anxiety were going to make they’re way into her actions and speech. As her familiarity with Kristian grew, though, her anxiety decreased slowly but surely. ”Oh, I usually either get up too late during the week, and on weekends, I usually don’t feel like fooling with them,” Tabitha replied with a slight shrug. As she stood there, her attention wasn’t focused on one thing for too long. When her step-sister spoke again, she just ended up absentmindedly listening. At least she had gotten the gist of what the other had said, though. ”It sounds good to me, as long as you’re fine with going there, too,” she stated with a sheepish smile. Truthfully, Tabitha would have been fine doing practically anything at this point, just as long as she was able to keep the conversation between herself and Kristian kicking. Everything between her and step-sister was going so much better than she had expecting. If only it could better than this and to the level of the relationship that she was actually wishing for. That would probably need a miracle, though.

xTabitha sighed softly as she processed what Kristian had just stated. Of course, she had thrown some impolite words at others and meaning every single bit of them. Such words weren’t common ones that escaped her mouth, though. It really in her nature to snap at someone and use some sort of insult towards them, but like everyone else in the world, Tabitha was definitely able to slip up from time to time. ”I have,” she began while turning her attention fully back onto her step-sister, ”but it’s not a common thing for me to do.” At least, that was the truth. Even if she wasn’t exactly a spiteful person, insults could be quite common when Tabitha was angry or irritated in some way. Keeping her mouth shut was one thing that she was pretty good at, though. That helped fight off her remarks, or at least most of them that went through her mind. ”I’ll be sure to go easy on you, though,” Tabitha said as a bit of a joke towards the other.

Of course, her dad was pretty much like everyone else’s father, or at least when it came to attempting to act cool. She had never said that he could actually pull the act off flawlessly and every time he tried, nor did Tabitha ever dare to say anything like that. All he seemed to do was pry into her personal life and then act like he understood every single thing that she was going through. ”Obviously,” Tabitha replied with a laugh. Oddly, the only noise within the house seemed to be coming from the conversation she was holding with Kristian. A part of her wanted to go see what her mother and step-father could be doing to cause them to be so quiet but some of the thoughts that crossed her mind weren’t too pleasant. If she walked in on them—oh, she definitely didn’t want to finish that thought completely. How Tabitha saw things, it was just better for the two to be oddly quiet, rather than bugging the hell out of them.

Her step-sister was right. Innocence was one thing that just couldn’t seem to exist within their school. With some of the people she had seen roaming the halls, though; it wasn’t hard to convince Tabitha into believing that. She was sure as hell that she was no epitome of innocence, and smirk on Kristian’s face seemed to tell her the same about her step-sister. The topic of school wasn’t one that was exactly too exciting to Tabitha, though. She was hoping it would just blow over eventually. Talking about school was just one thing that just seemed to always bring some amount—big or small—of pessimism into her mood. Really, she definitely got enough of the rumors and the meaningless chatter at school. At least, in case, things weren’t too bad, though.

It seemed to her that it was some surprise to the other that she didn’t switch who she stayed with on weekends. Well, Tabitha really couldn’t blame her step-sister for assuming that she did so, seeing that this was probably the first real conversation she was having with her. She shook her head before replying, ”I don’t—well, I did when my dad still lived in the area.” When her parents had decided on just having her stay home with her mother except for holidays, that hadn’t really surprised Tabitha too much. Besides, she figured that the three of them would get tired of the commuting that would have to occur every other weekend. With how impatient she could be from time to time, it wasn’t a real surprise to her parents that she had overall agreed with what they had decided. Well, at least that had cut out some arguing between their already broken family.

The decision that they had agreed on had the disadvantage that she couldn’t see her father as much as she really wanted to. At least there was a brighter side to the plan, though. Without having to switch between houses on weekends, Tabitha hoped that she would be able to spend more time with her step-sister then, that was, if the other was even really interested in being around her then. Either way, she knew that things in her life were definitely going to be changing, once again, now. Hopefully, this would be one of those better changes.

The more time she seemed to spend around Kristian, the more confused Tabitha seemed to become. Although, as her confusion grew, thanks to the other female, so did her curiosity; it was pretty much a natural thing, to her. Every time something seemed to confuse her, Tabitha was found on finding some answer in order to try and cause her confusion to cease. In this case, though, it seemed like to was going to take a lot more time in order to figure her step-sister out, but that didn’t seem to matter much to Tabitha. All Tabitha cared about was having some sort of relationship with Kristian, whether it was romantic or not—though, she figured it would more than likely be the latter. Still, she hoped that she could have a romantic relationship with the other, whether their parents were married or not. Though, somehow, Tabitha doubted that the other actually had mutual feelings for her. That seemed like only something she could wish for.

”Too complicated?” Tabitha questioned slightly while laughing. Well, at least the other was somewhat close to her motive as to why she rarely ever wore her contacts. ”It’s more like I’m too lazy.” She never really minded telling others about the simpler facts of her life, just as long as she knew those that she would talk to wouldn’t find some way to use it against her. Besides, it was known fact to practically everyone she talked to that she could be quite a lazy individual. If Tabitha wouldn’t have told this to Kristian, she knew that her step-sister would have figured it out for herself eventually. It was at least better to warn the other about such a negative trait in some way, or at least she tried to look at the situation that way.

Potheads? Well, from the sounds of it, some of them seemed to be lost or something. Smoking something illegal in a public place didn’t seem like too bright of an idea. Of course, potheads were known to be, well, stoned, and apparently being under the influence didn’t exactly help a person’s intelligence or common sense. That seemed like a good enough reason, to Tabitha, to stay away from such things. Due to the fact that the part about the potheads had been muttered by her step-sister, Tabitha was able to assume that she didn’t want anyone else to know about that little fact. ”Eh, we should be fine. It’s not like we’re going alone.” Being in someone’s company, especially after hearing that last comment, was a better thought for her to have. They wouldn’t let anything happen to one another, right? That was all that Tabitha could hope for. Besides, it was a public place, and it couldn’t really be that bad. ”And plus, the two of us are big girls, right?” she teased with a smirk slipping onto her face.

xThe three or so months that school had been out had seemed to fly by so quickly. It felt like just yesterday that class was dismissing for the summer. Now, class was about to start back up again. There went her usual routine of sleeping in, trying to keep everything within the apartment in line and not a complete mess, and then staying up until some ungodly hour. Reagan’s daily routine was going to change now until the next long break, which was for sure. Well, at least the summer had been pretty great while it had lasted.

Reagan found some relief in the fact that her attending class now meant showing up for work and not sitting in an old desk listening to some teacher ramble on about something someone had done wrong on their work. God, she had made sure that she wasn’t that type teacher. If she couldn’t handle, there seemed to be no way that anyone else could deal with someone like that. The only down side to things was that sleeping during class definitely wasn’t allowed anymore for her. Falling asleep during time she should have been instructing her students was just one way out of many to get her a** fired. Still, her lack of a “nap time” didn’t seem to make some of her students stop their own. Of course, when it came time for a test or project, it was always obvious of which ones used the class as a personal sleeping time.

As soon as she heard the monotone beeping of the alarm clock on her nightstand, Reagan knew her summer was officially over. Now it was the start of a new school year. At least the beginning of this year would, hopefully, be a lot better than it had been last year. Of course, last year had been nerve-racking for her. What teacher wouldn’t be nervous on their first day on the actual job, not just stuck student teaching anymore? At least the nervousness had faded away pretty quickly during the previous school year. Now, Reagan felt like she knew fully what she was doing, or at least knew for the most part. Things would be better this year.

Once Reagan had gotten out of bed and made her alarm clock cease its beeping, she made her way into the bathroom in order to shower. As soon as she finished in the shower, she made her way back into her room in order to get dressed. A pair of slacks, a blouse and heels—the typical outfit for a work day. After that, Reagan pulled her hair back into a ponytail and put on what little make-up that she wore. Leaving her bedroom, she waved to her roommate, Katelyn, before exiting their apartment. Skipping a meal was nothing uncommon in her life, despite the nagging that came from her roommate due to it. The art of blocking that girl out was one that she had definitely mastered.

The drive to school wasn’t a long one in the least. That meant it left even less time that she would have away from the place. Sure, Reagan enjoyed where she worked and such, but she still wasn’t ready for her break to be over. Now she was being thrust back into the world of high school once again, except now as her second year as a teacher. The previous year had been fine, excluding the fact that she was still confusing the name’s of students during the last days of the school year. Memorizing a few dozen names was obviously something that was Reagan’s forte. Hopefully, that could be something that would change this school year.

When she had arrived at school, of course, she couldn’t just make it directly to her classroom. No, some faculty member always had to stop her and ask her about how her break had been. The conversation could never seem to end there, though. That was when the rambling from the others ensued from time to time. As soon as the bell rang for class to start, she was set free from the conversation she had once been a part of with a couple of the teachers. Thanks to the conversation, she was late to her first class. There was really no telling what would be going on in that classroom without some sort of adult in there.

”Sorry that I’m late,” Reagan stated as walked into the classroom. She had yet to look over the students in her class, slightly out of fear of what could be happening between some of them. There were always people that didn’t get along in a class. Always. ”I’m Miss Connor, and this is English.” It was necessary to add the last part. As soon as she stated that, Reagan looked up and noticed the dumbfounded looks on the faces of some of the students. It happened every semester: at least one kid would somehow end up in the wrong class. Reagan sighed as a few of the students stood up and dismissed themselves from the class, hopefully off to try and find the class that they were supposed to be in at the time.

As soon as the strays had exited, Reagan looked back over the classroom, looking at all of the empty desks. When she continued to scan the room, she stopped when her brown eyes landed on a certain person. Robbin. Dammit all. Of course she had to be put into her class; life was enough of a b***h towards her to do so. After their kiss at the end the previous school year, her thoughts towards the girl had been altered. She had never suspected anything from the conversations they would carry on with one another. Obviously, that hadn’t been the case. Maybe telling her to just to refer to her by her first name when they were alone was too much? What was she supposed to do? Hell, Reagan knew she enjoyed that kiss they had shared a little too much. Maybe this year wasn’t going to be as great as she thought. Robbin was her student—she was her teacher. They couldn’t have a relationship, they just couldn’t. As much as she told herself that, Reagan knew it wasn’t going to stop her growing feelings, though. It looked like she was just going to have the make the best of the situation. ”Any questions before we begin going over the basics?”

xEven if the questions that the other seemed to ask did seem like she was trying to poke and prod a little too far into her life, Tabitha really didn’t mind it, at this point. Hell, she was going to be living with Kristian for some time now, so sooner or later she would have found most of this out for herself. Maybe it was nosiness fueling the questions from the other, or maybe it was just pure curiosity. Either way, it seemed by answering her, she was just fueling the fire. As long as fueling this fire made it to where she was able to spend more time with her step-sister, though, Tabitha didn’t really care much at all. Oh, didn’t figure that of all of the people, she would be the one to become damn lovesick. Lovesickness slipped out of her thoughts as quickly as it had made its way into them.

Well, at least she could add Kristian to the list of the few people that could actually catch onto her occasional humor. Really, it wasn’t like she had ever claimed it was great, or straightforward at that. ”This kitty’s got claws,” Tabitha shot back at the other, attempting to keep the slight humor lingering the air for a few more moments. Besides, as time progressed, it was becoming easier and easier to speak to the other. Really, the joke she had made had been used too many times by others for her to really enjoy hearing from someone else’s mouth. It was a bad reference towards her nickname, or at least that was what Tabitha thought, but it seemed to just fit the current joking mood. Plus, she doubted that Kristian actually knew her nickname or any of the silly references her friends made to it.

School the next day was bound to be an odd time, even in Tabitha’s book. Sure, there had been plenty of odd things to occur during her high school career, but this was definitely something she or her friends hadn’t been expecting to happen. Tabitha had been sure that her mother wouldn’t remarry anytime soon, or let alone have to live with someone that she attended school with. It wasn’t like their parent being married was somehow to just make them blood relatives as if they had been their whole life. No. It couldn’t. Every time that thought ran through her head, it just reassured her that having feelings for her step-sister wasn’t really that wrong. Was it their fault their parents had gotten married? No. Definitely not. Just the thoughts of possibly being together were satisfying for Tabitha, but the real deal would be so much better—she knew it.

Kristian was definitely a different person when she spoke to her, or at least that was what Tabitha had found out. Without really into a deep conversation with her, it just seemed like she was too nosy for her own good, or just borderline-ADD. God damn, she had to admit, though, that the personality she first thought the other had was an attracting feature. Now that she knew even more about her step-sister… Maybe she was just becoming desperate for a relationship. That had to be it. There was always the possibly that she was actually falling for Kristian, though, and that this wasn’t just some little one night fling she wanted between them.

A relationship was just out of the question, though. Who would even approve of them dating since they were step-sisters now? No one and Tabitha didn’t doubt that one bit. At least when her attention was turned back towards what Kristian was saying, it was able to get a different sort of relationship into her thoughts. Apparently, bringing up the topic of parental figures wasn’t the best idea she had come up with. Tabitha bit her lip as she glanced at the other with a bit of an apologetic look. Leave it to her to screw something up, of course. It was a bit obvious to her that the subject of the other’s mother wasn’t exactly one that her step-sister enjoyed. Maybe it was best if she could get off from the subject in order to help ease the mood once again.

Well, maybe the general subject wouldn’t be leaving as soon as she wanted it to. ”It’s fine, trust me,” Tabitha replied while slightly laughing. Really, it was obvious to her that her step-sister was definitely a curious one. She couldn’t really blame her, though, seeing as she was probably just as curious about the other in return. ”Oh, no, he never does. Things are still a bit awkward between us, though. He’s not too used to me being, you know, gay, and I’m still not allowed to get pregnant until I’m thirty.” Tabitha knew that the awkward moments between her father and herself wouldn’t cease until he got used to her sexuality more. It was damn obvious that he still wasn’t used to her thoughts and crushes towards her own gender. ”Talk too much?” she said in a questioning, teasing tone. ”I think you worry too much.”

Tabitha laughed slightly as the subject of contacts made its way back into their conversation. Of all of the things they had to talk about, that was one of things they had seemed to decide on talking about. Well, at least it was definitely better than some of the various topics that could have came up in the conversation. For example, what their parents were doing to come up again. Oh, those were thoughts that she just wanted to be permanently erased from her mind. Tabitha just nodded in response to Kristian’s statement, becoming a bit tongue-tied again.

She couldn’t help but to smile a bit as her step-sister admitted to thinking that she wasn’t the type to be as lazy as she was. Well, that thought that the other had been proven definitely wrong. ”Well, I’m pretty sure I don’t come off as a lot of things that I actually am,” Tabitha said with a slightly raspy sigh finishing her words. When she heard Kristian admitting to her own laziness, she couldn’t help but to laugh in the slightest bit. At least they were able to be honest with each other; it was a sign, or at least it was to Tabitha, that their growing relationship would be a good one.

”You definitely don’t have to say that twice!” In the end, she was glad, mainly due to the knowledge that there were potheads that hung out in the park that she wasn’t going to the park alone. There seemed like there was no telling what those guys would do, under the influence or not. Either way, Tabitha knew that in the back of mind, she was truly worried what they could really do to someone if they wanted to. They weren’t going to be alone, though. Everything would be fine, or at least she hoped it would be that way. ”Damn right,” Tabitha proclaimed, more than likely saying the words louder than she had first intended them to be.

When she felt the other grabbing onto her hand and trying to encourage her to hurry up, it didn’t want to make her move. She could only dream about this being some sort of loving gesture. Tabitha gripped onto the other’s hand while trying to fight off her blushing, but knew that some of the tint was already appearing her cheeks. Now it felt like she had practically no control over her actions—that someone else was now pulling the strings. Instead of following her step-sister, Tabitha brought the other closer to her and maybe it was a bit too close. What she did next, not even she was totally expecting.

As soon as the other was close enough to her, Tabitha forced herself onto the other, kissing Kristian as if they were together or something of the sort, as well as a bit too passionately. All the random, so-called love she experienced at parties obviously impacted her more than it showed. Absentmindedly, she let go of the other’s hand and wrapped her arms around her, probably too caught up in the moment. For all she knew, her step-sister wasn’t even single or looking. Damn, what had she just done? ”I…I…I’m sorry,” she mumbled nearly incoherently as her arms slipped off from the other. Now was the time to definitely retreat back behind the walls she had put up. Leave it to Tabitha to screw everything up. Maybe there was some hope, though. If her step-sister was going to get upset, there was always a chance that she could make up some believable excuse. Hopefully, word of this wouldn’t get to her mother. That would be the end of her time living her family for sure.

xCuriosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back.

If that wasn’t implying to her actions, Tabitha didn’t know what was. It couldn’t hurt to want to know more about her step-sister. Of course, with her growing feelings, maybe it wasn’t the best, now that she put a bit more thought into the subject. She just couldn’t ignore Kristian, though, especially with how they were actually able to get along. This was a good thing, or at least what was what Tabitha had to keep telling herself. Even if she knew that the fact that they practically eye to eye was a good thing, it was making her feelings intensify. They were step-sisters—nothing more. Damn, how she wanted it to be so much more, though. That couldn’t, and she doubted that ever would, happen. Tabitha knew that such a relationship was one that her mother wouldn’t agree with, even if she wasn’t blood related to Kristian.

Tabitha knew that she was the cat being mentioned when the saying went through her thoughts. Great, just another feline reference to add to her list. Still, her step-sister was fueling the now constant curiosity she was dealing with. This was the most she had ever even spoken to the other, and yet her step-sister was still able to captivate her so easily. It was irritating, but Tabitha had to admit herself that at the same time, she absolutely adored it. This was definitely a bit assuring that she wasn’t just trying to make herself think that she actually liked the other—this just helped Tabitha think that she was definitely falling for Kristian.

Once she saw the puzzled look cross the other’s face, it brought Tabitha in her own feelings of confusion. Maybe it hadn’t been the best idea to try to keep a conversation going with her step-sister using simple jokes. When Kristian explained her sudden gasp, she nodded in her head in reply. Now more curiosity was pulsing through her body. A part of her sort of wanted to know exactly what her step-sister could have possibly forgotten, but that might have been getting a bit too nosy about the other. Really, Tabitha knew that had forgotten things plenty of times before, and due to that, it just seemed a bit wrong to prod into the other’s business so much.

Hearing the other reply to her previous joke, Tabitha couldn’t help but to laugh a bit. She knew that Kristian probably didn’t understand the meaning behind what she had said—which would have surprised her if she did—but at least she was able to play along with it. It was tempting to use such a thing against the other and flirt in some way with her, but in the end, Tabitha decided against doing such a thing. She knew that if her mother was to come up the stairs and see what she was doing, she’d be screwed. If that happened, Tabitha knew that isolation wouldn’t be a joke, but something serious coming from the woman.

”As sure as I can be,” she stated with a slightly nervous laugh. Really, she did notice that her step-sister talked more than anyone she usually associated with or called friends, but it was obvious that Tabitha wasn’t the most outgoing person to ever walk the Earth. Maybe if she didn’t get along with Kristian her talking would get on her nerves, but it was complete opposite of that. Hell, Tabitha didn’t really care, for the most part at least, what they talked about, as long Kristian kept her interest in the conversation and that she was able to spend more time with her step-sister and crush. ”That’s only about twelve years away, for me. Thanks. Besides, I’ll need a damn miracle to have a kid, you know,” she teased.

Just Kristian attempting to deny the fact that she worried a bit too much was something that she found amusing. It was obvious to her that the other worried, if she was possibly trying to cover that up. Tabitha knew that she found the bit of denial, even though it probably a bit more of a bit of teasing than anything, was cute to her, in some odd way. She replied with her own little taunt for her step-sister, ”A tad?” Tabitha couldn’t help but to let out a bit of a distressed sigh as she noticed that the other was focused on some string, or something of that sort, that was on her shirt. It seemed like the conversation they were having was moving around in practically every toss and turn that was possible for it to take.

Tabitha sighed as she heard Kristian state that she didn’t seem like the type to be lazy or a lesbian. How many times had she heard that one? Too many—way too many. Apparently, more people than she thought found her to be more like the innocent, girl next door type of person. Well, that wasn’t how she truly acted, or at least once someone got to know her well enough. ”I know what you mean,” Tabitha replied as she heard the other trying to edit the statement she had said previously. ”And, again, you worry to much,” she said with a bit of a mocking tone lingering in her voice. When Tabitha noticed that Kristian was showing the signs of blushing, she bit lower lip for a moment. This girl wasn’t going to give her a break, was she?

The last thing Tabitha had wanted to do was to break away from the kiss, but her fear made her do otherwise. She couldn’t look back up at the other, mainly since she feared for the worst to happen between the two of them. What if she ran off and told their parents about this little incident? What if she decided to be spiteful and tell people at school about the little fiasco that had just occurred? The last thing she had been expecting to receive from Kristian was a kiss from her. Dear god. This couldn’t have been happening. It was, though. The incident she had just caused definitely had a better outcome than she had been expecting. Still, even though this event hadn’t been as bad as it could have been, that didn’t make it to where they weren’t step-sisters. As long as their parents were married, they were technically family. Having the other’s arms around her and the words she had spoken were reassuring in her case. Tabitha wrapped her arms back around the other, while resting her head gently against the other. ”I think I like you—obviously more than I should,” she muttered, trying to be sure that Kristian and herself would be the only ones able to hear what she had said.

let's just keep this between the two of us.
besides, it's just "sisterly" love.

xIt was obvious, or at least it was to Tabitha, that the mood now seemed to be tenser than it had once been. That was no real surprise to her, though, with all that was occurring now and what was bound to come. Everything that either one of them did just seemed to keep making her anxiousness increase as the time passed. It was all taboo, though. In her mind, she had the right to be as nervous as she was, even if she wasn’t showing it. The last thing her mother needed on her mind was that her daughter had some sort feelings for her own step-sister. There was the advantage that Tabitha had, though, that her mother was a bit oblivious to half of the things she even did in her life. Still, that didn’t mean that all of this didn’t have her on her toes, since it certainly did.

Obviously, Tabitha had made it to point to where she was comfortable around Kristian, or as comfortable as she could be around someone that she liked. Really, it didn’t matter to her where this all went, just along as it didn’t ruin the growing friendship she had with the other. Hopefully, the kiss alone was enough to say that she wanted more than just that friendship, though. Even if it had been her that had made the first, sudden move, Tabitha was still confused about practically everything. No one said that her step-sister was even interested in her. Although, no one had said that she wasn’t either.

”That sounded more like a threat than a comeback, you know,” Tabitha teased with a small smile. Soon after, though, that smile changed into a slight scowl. Was the other trying to pick at her age or the way she acted? That was unclear to Tabitha. In her reply, she attempted to be as serious as she could towards the subject, ”Well, one of us has to act something like our age.” Of course, trying to be serious with such a matter didn’t work out too well for Tabitha. As soon as the words had slipped out of her mouth, the smile seemed to find its way back onto her face. When the other spoke of children, all she could really do was shrug her shoulders slightly. ”Eh, I’ve got a figure to watch,” she joked, hoping that point got across to Kristian. The last thing she needed to do was make herself sound like the type of person to obsess over looks and such, since that definitely wasn’t much like Tabitha at all.

There was always a possibility that what she was saying to the other could be considered flirting, but at this point, Tabitha had truly stopped caring. Besides, her step-sister was her crush, so wasn’t it slightly expected that her words could have been interpreted as flirting? It was plausible, to Tabitha. Hearing the other tease her, Tabitha pushed the other lightly with a smile still plastered on her face. She was quick enough to know when someone was teasing and when someone was being serious, it was obvious that Kristian was just attempting to mock her this time. ”Good. Worrying all the time is a bore.” Even if Tabitha was known herself to worry from time to time, it wasn’t a constant thing. Besides, the only thing that she was ever really concerned about was more-so not embarrassing herself, since that happened enough already.

It was obvious to Tabitha that her step-sister’s attention span wasn’t too great, seeing how the simple sound of a car going by the house was enough to stop her mid-sentence. But, she found it a bit odd that Kristian thought that simply pointing something out was going to offend her. Hell, it was going to take a lot more than someone pointing out the absolute truth about her to offend her—a lot more. ”Oh, trust me, it’s going to take so much more than pointing out the facts to offend me,” Tabitha stated as some sort of assurance for her step-sister. She couldn’t help but to raise her eyebrow in slight confusion when she realized that Kristian had used a small amount of French in her next statement. ”French, hm?” she questioned. ”That’s a bit sexy, ma chère.”

For once her life, it seemed like everything was just going how she wanted it to be, and in an almost perfect manner, too. It was a relief to Tabitha to hear that the other knew that she had feelings for her. That caused all the fear that her sudden moment of lip-locking to just disappear from her mind, as if it had never been there in the first place. ”I like that answer,” Tabitha mumbled as she slightly tightened her hold on her step-sister, aware that the familiar pink tint was returning to her cheeks once again. It really seemed like nothing could ruin this moment.

Tabitha!” Apparently, nothing didn’t include her mother anymore. From the sound of it, she was still downstairs. Really, the woman just knew how to ruin the best moments, didn’t she? With a frustrated sigh, Tabitha let her arms reluctantly slip of from the other and lifted her head back up. She knew that the last thing her mother needed to see was her holding her own step-sister in such a way. ”Sorry, this’ll only take a minute, hopefully,” she mumbled as a bit of an apology as she carefully made her way out of Kristian’s hold.

”Tabby?” Talk about doing things in the knick of time. Tabitha had just barely gotten herself at a reasonable distance from her step-sister the moment she heard her mother’s voice, which was now closer than it had been previously. Looking over at the doorway, she saw her mother standing there, just as she had been expecting, or at least for the most part. ”What have you been doing?” God, when wasn’t this woman so nosy? It was different when someone that wasn’t one of her parents asked her about something, but when it came to the two adults, it just seemed like they were trying to force themselves into her life. ”I-I was unpacking, or at least trying,” Tabitha practically mumbled, now just putting on the act that she was actually being her shy self around Kristian. When she saw the puzzled look cross her mother’s face, she knew she was wondering why not a thing was really unpacked from the boxes. ”We got to talking, and I-I sort of ended up getting my attention on something else.” Of course, her mother would never know that “something else” meant putting her arms around her step-sister like she had and kissing her.

At least the woman had left with her answer, which had been vague, or Tabitha knew that it was so. Before leaving, she heard the woman mutter something about to finish unpacking, but both of them should have known that the chances of that actually happening were slim. As soon as she was sure that her mother was downstairs and wasn’t going to bother them again any time soon, Tabitha shut the door and made her way back over to Kristian. ”Now, what are we going to do, mainly because we know that we like each other?” Tabitha questioned as she wrapped her arms back around the other, once she had pushed her glasses back up for what could have been near the millionth time. At least she had been able to pull off the sheepish act around her mother. Still, being around her crush in such a manner like she was now was bound to eventually have the same effect on her with time.

i have no regrets,
even if we're supposedly family.
let's just keep this between the two of us.
besides, it's just "sisterly" love.

xFor now, everything was nearly perfect, or at least it seemed so to Tabitha. At this point, she didn’t really care if such a relationship was supposed to be frowned upon, it felt right to her; in her mind, that was all that mattered. At least the one thing that didn’t occur between her and Kristian was butting heads. So far, it seemed like they saw eye-to-eye for the most part. Tabitha hadn’t been expecting her step-sister to return any of the feelings she had for the other, but it was a definite bonus that she, in fact, did have mutual feelings. Now, it felt absolutely right to be holding onto the other in the manner that she was doing so.

Nearly everything about this whole situation was so confusing to her, though. For the most part, Tabitha knew that a relationship like this was wrong, but like she had been telling herself multiple times, she wasn’t related to Kristian by blood at all—just marriage. Still, she was able to doubt that such a thing would go by too well with either of her parents. On the other hand, though, what her parents didn’t know wouldn’t hurt them, right? Besides, as long as no one else found out about this all, the only way the adults could even learn about the whole situation was through one of them. Somehow, Tabitha was able to highly doubt that the other was going to go run off and tell people about what had happened between them.

Hearing the other’s comeback, Tabitha couldn’t help but to let a grin slip back onto her lips. Well, at least they enough humor between the two of them to keep an entertaining conversation alive. ”Does that mean that I should be scared, or no?” she teased in reply. At this point, Tabitha knew that her teasing was her own little way of trying to flirt with the other without making it so obvious. But really, did it matter if it was obvious or not now? As long as there was even the slighest threat of someone walking in on them, she found it to be a very important matter.

”Oh, so I have to pretend to be the one with a stick up my a** in this relationship?” It was obvious that Tabitha wasn’t even trying now to be serious, which her tone of voice proved; it was filled with practically anything but seriousness. Hearing Kristian proclaim that the two of them were virtually failures when came to acting like they were serious, she nodding in agreement while laughing for a short moment. ”You can really point out the obvious, can’t you?” Now, Tabitha didn’t really care that she was flirting with the girl, just as long as neither of their parents came up to investigate anything. She was aware that the other had mutual feelings for her, so was no real harm in acting in such a playful manner, or at least that was how Tabitha saw it.

Obviously, Kristian hadn’t completely picked up on the fact that the whole reamrk about how she was watching her figure was just a joke. Tabitha hadn’t been expecting the other to compliment her due to it, though. No, she had just been expecting the other to realize that it was a joke and to laugh the matter off or make some remark of her own. ”I-I was just kidding,” she explained as she realized that, once again, something had caused her blush like mad. Tabitha was at least slightly thankful that her step-sister more than likely knew enough about her to know that she wasn’t exactly the most outgoing person to ever exist. ”If that comment still counts, though, thank you,” Tabitha stated with a sheepish grin, with her words seeming to be barely above a whisper. Of course, there were plenty of downsides to her more-so shy nature, and this was definitely one of them. Obviously, this was just one thing that she couldn’t grow out of.

Tabitha couldn’t help but to let out a small, frustrated sigh as Kristian brought up the subject of nervous habits. Hopefully, at this point, most of hers were obvious to her step-sister. Of course, their conversations at school had never seemed to span past more than a few words, which were mostly just greetings. ”Well, that’s probably better than my habit of not being able to really speak when I’m nervous,” Tabitha pointed out with a slight laugh. It was odd to her, though, that for the most part, being around Kristian wasn’t really hindering her speech much. Although, her step-sister had proved to her already that she was quite different from plenty of other people that she knew and generally associated with.

”Oui,” Tabitha said quietly before she pressed her lips back against the other girl’s gently for a moment. Really, to her, it hadn’t mattered much about what Kristian had just said, but she was subconciously caught up in the moment. It was true that her French skills were definitely not the best, but at least they were great enough to get her by in this situation. Feeling her step-sister’s grip on her tighten, Tabitha did the same in return, reluctant to loosen up on the hug as time passed.

Truthfully, it wasn’t much of a surprise to her that it was her mother that had to ruin the moment. Still, being caught holding her step-sister in such an unsisterly way, especially by her temperamental mother, wouldn’t have been such a great thing to deal with. Without her mother not even knowing it, she had won that battle, as much as Tabitha didn’t want to admit that to even herself. The whole time the woman had been in the room, she had been wanting to force her out, but Tabitha knew that she didn’t need to raise any sort of suspicion within her mother. During the time that the other was around, her attention didn’t stray from her, except for the time when Kristian greeted her. The confusion it seemed to cause her mother was slightly humorous in her book, but as far as she was concerned, she was going to have to get used to her being around Kristian more than she ever was before.

Realizing that the other girl had wrapped her arms back around her, Tabitha sighed contently. Now that her mother had finally left the two of them alone, and hopefully it would stay that way for awhile, she could focus on other things besides satisfying the woman’s curoisity. When Kristian questioned if they should leave the house, she nodded in reply. That seemed like the best idea, especially if they wanted to avoid their parents, which was something that Tabitha wanted to do. ”If our parents, or anyone they know, isn’t there, I’m completely fine with going there.” The last thing that either of them needed was someone going back to their parents and telling them about the finer details of their relationship. Truthfully, Tabitha didn’t know how her step-father would react to the two of them being together or what have you, but she still didn’t have a good feeling about it. In the end, it had to be best to keep all this just between the two of them. Word traveled fast around this goddamned, idiotic town, and she really didn’t want to be labeled as one of the incestous (that would bound to be said, even though people knew they weren’t actually related) freaks in town. God, she didn’t want that shoved onto the other either. At least when it came to secrecy, they seemed to see eye-to-eye.

xNot a word of Collin’s plan had truly processed in Drew’s mind. No, her mind was focused on other things, like thinking of ways to keep herself and the others alive. That seemed like the best plan: staying alive. Well, at least in the small moments that she had, Drew was able to catch her breath. Still, her muscles were tense and she knew she was bound to be placed into a situation to where she would have to fight, like it or not. Fighting robots didn’t sound like an easy task; that was one thing she didn’t doubt. She was dragged from her thoughts prematurely, though, when she noticed Zac and Dollie had joined the group. It was definitely a relief to her that the two were safe. When the male hugged her, Drew quickly returned the gesture, but the tension never left her body.

When the group started moving towards the cafeteria, Drew followed, or at least she attempted to follow. It wasn’t a surprise to her that it seemed like robots were just appearing out of thin air, at this point. Without giving it too much thought, she stopped, preparing herself to fight to the best of her ability. It seemed stupid, but she felt the need to protect the others that were ahead of her. Besides, she figured that she would be able to hold out long enough to stall until something could actually be done, and the fact that she virtually untouchable by these robots was another reassuring factor. This was definitely a side of Drew that didn’t show itself often at all. It was a surprise that someone like her could actually be a serious soul, but the others were about to witness this side, whether they previously knew about it or not.

It hadn’t really fazed Drew that the rain had even stopped; she was more focused on the battle that was ensuing around her. Noticing a robot charging towards her, which seemed slightly like déjà vu now, it ran right through her, as if her presence was just an illusion. That had been too close for her liking. Drew hadn’t been expecting another one to be right behind her, though. She only realized its presence the moment it swiftly hit her in the back with its metallic fist; the force from the hit was more than enough to bring a girl of her size to the ground. ”D-Dammit,” she mumbled roughly, once again having to make attempts at forcing her breathing to return to normal. Drew made no attempt to pick herself up off from the ground, though. She had barely felt the pain of hitting the ground, more than likely due to the pain that was shooting throughout her body, thanks to the hit she had previously taken.

The most she did from her position on the ground was watch the single machine hover over her, probably trying to decide on which method to use to end her life. Evidently, any of the other intruders passing by had their interest on other things than a seemingly weak student. Her dark eyes were able to watch as the robot pointed the flamethrower towards her.

Then, there absolutely nothing in her world.

She knew she was alive, though. Drew had never been able to describe the feeling, well, more like the lack of a sense of touch that seemed to have while phasing. Luckily, that all still applied now. She didn’t feel the scorching heat coming from the flames that were surrounding and even passing through her body. Drew knew they were there, though. Even though her eyes were clenched tightly shut, she could still tell the flames were there, due to the light that they were emitting. Once that was gone, Drew had to force herself to cease the use of her power, knowing that she was pushing her limits. Even if she wasn’t burnt, the ground beneath her was which encouraged her to get up off from the ground quicker. The machine was following her as she made her attempt at dashing away, she knew it. Being knocked to the ground once again, Drew knew that she wouldn’t be able to survive another fiery attack.

All she could do was brace herself for what she was expecting to come next, pulling her limbs as close as she could to the rest of her body. Hearing the noisy movement of the machine, she was expecting the worst, at least until she heard the hunk of metal crash onto the ground. Someone else had dealt with the damned thing. Drew looked up at the other in a slight daze, trying to place a name and power to the face of the male, or at least the best she could in the minimal light. She tried not to, but as the other picked her up off the ground, she couldn’t help but to wince from the pain. It wasn’t that the male was causing her pain, but it was the fact that it felt like every fiber of her body was aching and tense with pain.

Drew didn’t know where the other was headed, but all she could do was trust him at this point. When the movement ceased and she realized that the other was trying to lie her down on the ground, Drew forced herself to stand up instead. It wasn’t a painless task, but she knew that she had to do her best to fight. She was surrounded by other students, though. The one that had helped her was gone almost as soon as he had come. Now, she didn’t dare to use her power, knowing that would just her last bit of energy and being passed out wouldn’t be of any use to anybody. Her eyes scanned through the crowd, stopping as they settled on Dollie. At least she didn’t have to worry now about overexerting her own power. Hopefully, this would all just end soon, and without much more pain to anyone else.
