Quixote

Another Dragon woken by Addis. He had the most fractured memory. He only has the vaguest impressions of his life before. He remembered he had something to do with nobility, that he supported Addis at some point and felt strongly about it, and then that he had a mission to do… something. Addis had ‘filled in the blanks’ for the young Dragon. He believes his family supported Addis’ fight against the Dragons because the Dragon in power was unsuited for the throne.

He is upright and serious and people assume he is mute due to how infrequently he speaks. He is renowned for his burning stare and equally hot flames when angry. He has no problem fighting anyone who opposes Addis or his fellow resurrected Dragon companions. He overlooks their unsavory characteristics (though it clear he prefers Vlitra’s company over the other two). He makes a point to cover them in battle. It is also in battle that his old self comes out the best. While his memories may be gone it is clear to his opponents that he was a seasoned warrior. He fights as well with a sword as he does with his draconic strength or fire. The sword he currently uses is a pronged claymore that he sets ablaze and uses to cut down just about anything his flame fails to roast.

What Quixote doesn’t know is that he once fought against Addis in the war. He was once a warrior for a noble family but not a member of a noble family. That noble family he affiliated with sympathized with Addis after his first folly. They retracted their support of the man when the war began in earnest.

Nikolaevna (Neva)

Neva was one of the Dragons revived by Addis but it does not appear that she was one of his compatriots in the war. It was not out of unwillingness but rather no one thought she had any value in battle and thus was overlooked. Upon her revival she shows that she had retained a remarkable amount of her memories. Instead of being frightened or angry she expresses interest in joining Addis despite his past actions. She has no desire to revive the Draconic race. She is more interested in what she can gain in her new life.

Neva was a hybrid born from an ice and an earth Dragon. The unfavorable match up affected her social standing but was far from making her a pariah. If anything it made her want attention more. She perfected the art of using her outward personality to manipulate. She lays on the sweetness and plays coy though just under the surface she is a cold person who obsessively hungers for material goods and attention. She obsessively hordes valuable items and will drop her outward personality and get violent if she even thinks someone stole something from her.

Neva was not a fighter but she has all the equipment she needs in order to protect herself. She has a frosty breath that is weaker than the average ice Dragon but strong enough to seriously hurt a human with their skin exposed. Her greatest offensive attack is her ability to shoot her razor sharp ‘ice scales’ like tiny pin missiles. The speed of her scale recovery varies based on the amount of moisture in the air. Typically the recharge is a few minutes. At its quickest it takes a minute and at its longest it can be an hour.

She appears to have known the girls. It doesn’t take long to see that she is insanely jealous of them though even she can’t understand why.

Ante Brisbee

Young Ante has lived contentedly with his family for 22 years in the same thriving colony founded by his great grandfather (though he received no credit and to this day his family will rave about the injustice of it all) way back when. His family hung up their adventuring boots and went about trying to establish themselves as various things before settling for the less than seemly lazy con artists and swindlers. Though he comes from such an odd background Ante is amiable if not lacking in the moral department.

For one to understand how Ante ended up looking for a way to explore the wilds one must understand Ante’s father and his current set up. Ante’s father has always been the epitome of what the family has come too. He is relatively likeable but inarguably a bum and a swindler who always looks for the easiest and most profitable set up. He played at gambling for a bit when Ante was young but found even that past time to be too much of a time hole. He instead started to investigate other get rich quick schemes. Ante was more than happy to just follow his father around and pick up the tricks of the trade and his father was happy to have him along because not only could he carry stuff but he made a useful prop in certain situations.

They family went through various phases. Repair took too much know how and they couldn’t bullshit their way through it. Owning a restaurant had some… deadly consequences so they dropped that as well. Even their delivery service fell through under Ante’s father’s management. Just when his father was about to give up on the whole venture and return to gambling (the family had agreed it was the least of the evils) he met a man in a public park with a monkey like creature. The animal played a simple to operate instrument and people went gaga for it. He rushed home with a whole new plan in mind.

A zoo! Mobile for a while but eventually they got permanent digs and enjoy mild success. Ante’s father enjoyed the line of work and it made a slightly more active man out of him. By the time Ante was twenty two he too had developed an appreciation for the place. He saw just how easy the money was and how if one played their cards right they’d be set for life! He had always been more energetic than his father (especially when money was involved!) He came up with a brilliant idea of adding a star attraction to the zoo. One of the wild animal people that were spoken of from time to time. The only question was how was he going to trap one with absolutely no experience?

He had an idea or two.

Eventually he tracks down a man by the name of Kurz. He had done enough digging to give him impeccable knowledge about the ex-scouting party member. Hoping that since he had severed his ties with the group that he might be able to convince the man to work for pay and help him wrangle one of the animal natives one last time. He approached Kurz in his grandfather’s old gear and introduced himself as a naturalist looking to stuff the wild beastmen figuring his ‘official’ agenda sounded better than the truth and implied he had mundo buckage to back up the mission and make it worth the man’s time.

But he could only bluff so long. Once successfully getting them out into the wilds his façade slowly breaks down and it becomes clear he is a lying sack of s**t city slicker.

Gibu

Gibu was once a highly aggressive warrior in her tribe. She was notorious for taking her scraps too far and being possessive and territorial. While her disposition was off putting to some she was undeniably a great fighter and protector of her clan. She remained as such for many years before her home territory became the focus of human settlers. She was among the first to attack the humans trying to encroach on their land. She was also among the last to be subdued and captured. While she was imprisoned and waiting to be transported she continued to violently lash out at her captors. After relentless fighting she eventually exhausted herself long enough to observe the humans. For the first time in her life she experienced a revelation of sorts. She realized the humans didn’t think of them as intelligent.

She stopped wasting her energy on fighting them whenever she could and began to look for a way to escape without confrontation. She was successful in breaking out of her cage but failed to free her brethren. Reluctantly she fled. While saving her own life she abandoned her tribe.

For a while she wandered aimlessly, being chased from territory after territory by its occupants. Eventually she collapsed and waited for death. As luck would have it she ended up in an herb patch frequented by Anu and was brought back to her tribe and nursed back to health. While most of her injuries were fixed there was lasting damage from the weapon used by the humans to capture her. She is now virtually blind in her left eye and had discoloration in her hair. Along with part of her vision she seems to have lost her aggressive nature since she in part believes that it is why humans have such a hatred for her kind. She picked up a roll as a gatherer for the tribe, in particular focusing on Anu’s needs since she wants to repay her.

During one of her outings (which can last day) she came across a dying human. After some deliberation she decided to aid him. She fixed him the best she could and then left him. She decided it would be best if she kept the incident to herself and so she had told no one.

Though she’s a gatherer now there is still a warrior under her squishy exterior. Fighting her could still prove to be a deadly experience.

Herra

Warrior and hunter for her tribe. She boasts about her skills loudly and frequently. She is every inch the killer she claims to be. Few can outdo her in terms of one on one combat and she is far from being dumb either. She focuses most of her aggression not on her clanmates but on humans whom she detests.

Herra doesn’t try to hide her views and feelings. If anything she likes to show off. Anything from making unsettling remarks to wearing the clothing of the humans she’s successfully killed (she considers it the equivalent of ‘skinning’ them). She is not permitted to actively hunt down humans but once they’ve entered the territory she considers them fair game. She lead her fellow hunters in a borderline sadistic game of cat and mouse till the humans leave their range or are killed. She hides her true feelings under a mask of mirth so it’s hard to get a reading on just how she feels about humans let alone why.

She is respect ,begrudgingly in some cases, by her fellow tribesmen with a few exceptions. Gibu dislikes her since Herra makes a point of actively bullying her. Herra insists that Gibu is perfectly capable of fighting back but won’t since she’s gone soft. She teases Zil mostly in hopes of sparking Gibu’s wrath but has so far been unsuccessful. She butts heads with Anu. She is caught between respecting her and loathing her. She feels the same coldblooded hatred for all humans.

Ru Flora

Ru is a soft spoken youth who has made a living as a naturist. She is one of the very few humans who has decided to make her living outside of the safety of the colonies in the name if science. Anyone who meets her is shocked to find that someone like her could survive in such harsh environments yet remain civil. One has to wonder if she’s alright in the head though.

Ru is a very shy nervous person, so much so one has to wonder what the hell she's doing living outside of the walled in cities. She finished her schooling inside the very city Ante and Kruz reside in but straight away she packed her things and set out for the roughest terrain known to man. She has used her knowledge of the natural world to avoid trouble. After spending some time with her it becomes clear that she is like a flower. Pretty and prim on the outside but fitted to living in the environment she has chosen to a T. While she isn't particularly good at combat she is a great escape artist and not to shabby at hiding either. She isn't the best at dealing with people. Only a put of pushing is enough to get her to roll over and go with another person's wishes.

She left home for the wilds because of her love of natural and it's beautiful balance. She never voiced her opinions but is of the belief that the animal tribesmen are more complex than let on. She avoids direct encounters with the people that are the subject of her study but she feels she had complied adequate evidence to support her theory.The trouble is that the last person she tried to send the information to died tragically. Being the nervous person that she is she assumed that fowl play was involved. Ever since she has refused to come home. Her studies continue to grow which brings her pleasure and fear in equal measure.

She lives along the edge of Anu, Zil and Gibu's territory and is known to the group but the exact location of her homestead is a mystery.

Zen

Though Zen doesn't show it she is old for her people. She was a gatherer till she was forced into a leadership position following the death of the old leader. She prefers to avoid conflict with people when possible. Though she is criticized for not being more proactive against the encroachment of humans, her decision seems to have saved innumerable lives.

Zen is a slow moving and lax woman whose past as a gatherer has made her shrewd and wise. Nothing seems to phase her any longer. She withstands praise and violent criticism with the same passive expression. It is not for a lack of caring. Zen is of the belief that one must keep their head level in order to make proper choices. As leader it becomes even more important to not let feelings get in the way of her serving her people. It is this mentality that gets her in trouble with Herra and the other hunters and warriors. Her track record however helps her combat their complaints. Under her care, the tribe has suffered virtually no loss of life by human hands. Though this has been the case for many years she is worried that a shift is coming and her style of leadership will eventually backfire on them. She has confided this is in Anu, whom she considers to be a close friend but to no one else.

She rarely leaves the camp and can be found in her den smoking and reviewing supplies and patrols. She does not have any strong feelings towards humans beyond acknowledging the fact they are a threat.

For the past three hundred years the forests of Grau have been terrorized by creatures that wear the skin of men by day but turn into blood thirsty beasts by the light of the moon. Men, women and children alike have learned to hide from the things that lurk in the woods during the witching hour for as long as anyone can recall. Using their fearsome ability, those that were born beast have learned to control and prosper at the expense of the humans that were terrified of them. The pureblooded line of beastmen took on the name Entfesselt and proceeded to industrialize the area in search of wealth for their emerging dynasty. The supernatural family removed completion both human and natural and was soon enjoying a life of luxury.

With their massive influence over a trading hub they became a forced to be reckoned with. The Heldenmut Empire took notice of the family and instead of fighting them they welcomed the family into the folds of the noble class thus solidifying their claim over the Grau lands. Little did the Empire know they have invited wolves amongst their flock.

The Entfesselt family learned to hide their true nature from the eyes of all. Those living within the city know nothing of the dark past of the local nobles. However, there are surrounding villages that refused to live in the wolf’s den. They only have old stories pasted down through the generations and even they have come to believe they are nothing more than folktales. All the same they hold deep grudges against the family for taking large chunks of their land.

Things are not all well within the family either. The pureblooded women, or moon maidens, of the family grow increasingly resentful of their inability to participate in politics despite being the more stable members of the family (due to their inability to change like their male counterparts). As the patriarch of the family nears his final transformation his wife looks to take over instead of passing his title down to their eldest son. It seemed to all be talk till the youngest male child of the family was killed in a ‘hunting accident’ during the fall. Though the family knows better, as an arrow with a silver tip was the weapon of choice against the young wolf. Angered, the Duchess has thrown her grab for power into overdrive in order to find who killed her son and punish them accordingly. A rift between the family members becomes increasingly clear, especially when the second son enters a risky engagement with the mayor’s daughter who does not yet know of their lycanthropy.

Beyond the turmoil of the noblemen, the police begin their investigation per the request of the third son, whom believes there is something else amiss with his youngest brother’s death. The police turn their suspicions on a newcomer to the town. A hunter and trapper by trade from the small villages of the northern region. The man came looking for help concerning numerous animal attacks around his village only to be pegged as a suspect in the nobleman’s death.

As tensions come to a boil, it is only a matter of time before blood and secrets spill.

Grau- The bustling trading hub located dead center of an ancient trading route. Hundreds of caravans run through the town every week. Thanks to all the traffic from around the continent the large town is blessed with technology of all kinds (steampunk). Alchemy and the medical practice are two of the greatest industries besides trade taking place within the city. On the outskirts of the town the Entfesselt mansion rests. Some find its remote location rather odd but others attribute it to the family’s love of privacy.

Grauwald- The forests of the region are filled with old growth trees of huge proportions as well as animals with equally grand sizes. Animals that are typically considered natural but have a larger size than normal are called Grau Creatures. Grau stags are highly prized animals in hunts and Grau bears are considered the most dangerous things in the woods. Myths and legends also populate these forests with ghosts and witches though citizens of Grau tend not to believe such things anymore. The villagers are wearier of myths since they actually have been known to encounter the rare supernatural beings from time to time and do not often escape in one piece.

Northern Settlements- Tiny villages in the northern regions remain frozen in time. They do not have the same access to goods and technology and instead choose to live off the land. They encounter mythical creatures more frequently than anyone else thanks to their remoteness. In recent months they have been plagued by werewolf attacks. The locals are certain this has everything to do with their age old tormentors, the Entfesselts.

Moon Maidens- In the pureblooded families only the males are transformed by the light of the moon. Females have other latent abilities. They sooth their male kin with their presence during the transformation. They also seem to have something about them that makes it taboo for a were of any kind to bite them. Shedding moon maiden blood sends weres into a frenzy.
Moon maidens’ male offspring are always weres and their daughters are always moon maidens. Moon maidens cannot be made and thus must be born in a pureblooded family. Like male weres they can only reproduce with fellow weres.

Purebloods- Weres born from a lycanthropy inflicted father and a moon maiden. They tend to have more control over themselves than their turned brethren. They start shifting during puberty and reach their final transformation between their 50s or early 60s. After that they remain in their wolf form till they die. Compared to the turned their live spans are long and since they have more control over themselves they can avoid trouble even while shifted.

Like all werewolves they experience pain when they shift but it lessens with age. During a shift they can either move upright or on all fours. They are incredibly large while standing on their hind legs and can be mistaken for Grau bears. They tend to be dark in color.

Post shift, events experienced while in wereform can be blurry and incoherent at best. It takes time for weres to learn to recall things in detail from shifts.

All purebloods weres are male as their female counterparts are moon maidens and cannot shift. It is up to them to turn new weres as mates and to look after the newly turned while out and about.

Like in many legends they can be poisoned by silver.

Turned- Turned weres are ordinary people who were bitten by another werewolf. If the bite does not kill the victim (blood loss or infection have been known to take the lives of potential weres) they will experience hallucinations, panic attacks, fevers, aggression and insatiable hunger until they become accustomed to turning which can take as little as two months of shifting to six months of shifting. Unlike their pureblood counterparts they tend to stop shifting considerably sooner. A typical span is 25 years or so, especially when turned by a pureblood. However, a large part of preventing the early onset of a permanent shift has to do with control. Turned weres that let themselves go can be lost within a month.

Another oddity about the turned is that it is the only way to create a female werewolf. Whatever lycanthropy effects it appears to not mesh with women well. They are more prone to the negative side effects and have a higher risk of losing themselves. On the flip side once they get control they live longer and have stronger recall than males.

Turned weres show slightly more color variation, are generally smaller than a pureblood, and have a harder time keeping their memories than a pureblood. They have the same weakness to silver.

The most common reason for a person being turned on purpose is for breeding as weres can only reproduce with other weres or moon maidens. Their offspring must be bitten to be turned unless their mother was pureblood and they are male.Most incidents outside of mating are accidents.

Winny dropped the utensils into the farm house sink and ran the water of her own hands. She flicked the last of the soap and moisture away. She heard her son address her as she toweled down her hands with a dish cloth. She turned around and immediately let out a small cry. “Look at you…” She whispered, bringing the towel up to her mouth so he wouldn’t see her worried frown. Her eyes and tone made it plenty clear she was experiencing a mix of great relief and genuine motherly concern.

                        Sonia has led a pleasantly sheltered life as the only child of the mayor of the town. She has a bit of a reputation for being confrontational, spoiled and afraid of poor people. She was initially disinterested in the second son of the noble family (as her father never approved of them). She changed her tune when he saved one of her many felines for certain death. From there they have become rather close and recently entered an unexpected engagement.

                        She is ignorant of the true nature of her fiancé, her father’s thievery, or the fact that a murder has taken place.

                        Chris has been long suffering at the hands of the supernatural inhabitance of the forest he lives in. The damage has primarily been done to his property but recently his only remaining family has been targeted. He has come to Grau in search of a way to help his sister only to land squarely in the middle of a murder investigation. And of course he’s looking good for it.

                        When he’s not being hounded for murder he is a rough on the outside but just beneath the surface is a nice enough guy who’s just really really down on his luck.

                        Alex has lived his life in fear of both of his parents and what they might do in order to giant he control they crave. He has simply resigned himself to following his mother’s wishes and avoiding his father entirely. He loves his siblings though he doesn’t see them often now that he’s being pushed into the medical field by mother. Though he is well past the age of the first transformation he had yet to show signs of changing which is by and large why his father hates him and his mother supports him.

Alex was more frazzled than ever when his sister appeared at his shoulder. He jumped a bit at her touch but regained his relative composure once he saw that it has his sister. “Miverna, he can’t call it off like this.” He grasped her forearm in order to stop her from leading him up the stairs to where his father and mother were standing and speaking as guests poured around them as if they were a river and the Entfesselts were a stone. He spotted his brothers walking up the opposite set of steps. Their father acknowledged them and then turned his eyes to his daughter and youngest son. Alex’s grasp on her arm tightened. Even from their great distance he could clearly see his father’s unnatural eyes staring down on him.

‘Do his eyes ever change back? Or is it my imagination.’ Alex asked himself. He swallowed hard before readjusting himself so he was linked arm and arm with his sister. “Let’s get this over with.” He muttered darkly before beginning the climb.

“Coward.” Wilhelm muttered to himself as he watched Alexander walk side by side with Miverna. He turned swiftly, expecting the others to follow him into the grand estate. He grabbed one of the servants by the shoulder like owl snatching a field mouse from hay. The look on the young man’s face was about the equivalent of a rodent under a raptor’s talons to boot.

“Get the horses ready.”

“What about the-“

“Tell him his service is done. If Lord Eraburn is alive when we get there then his man will surely be greatly rewarded upon his return.” The man growled. The servant was mystified by his intrusions but too terrified to object. He ran off as soon as he was released. Wilhelm wrenched open the heavy oaken doors and walked through without a second thought handling parasite

We have reached equality. But how can that be so? In this world of magical beings: Elves, trolls, vampires, and just about every other magic using creature from myth how can they all truly be equal? Humans have nothing more than their wit and ingenuity but that is nothing compared to the powerful magic and longevity of the elves. They were the traditional prey even of some of the beings they now live side by side with. Humans cannot even best other species that don’t wield magic such as centaurs or shifters.

While humans inhabit some of the higher positions in the government it is undeniable… They are the lowest rung in the social ladder. Human deaths are not taken as seriously as they should and often crimes are even pinned on humans as they don’t have the economic power to fight charges and make cases easy to close.

As bad as things are a boiling point has not been reached. Things are peaceful in the city. Until the terrorist attacks start.

Humans would have been first to take the blame except the violent crimes all targeting magical creatures being disemboweled and butchered were inarguably committed using magic. The group does not try to hide who they are. At every scene there is a name and a warning.

“WE ARE STEIN AND IT WILL GET WORSE”

Stein… a group of humans and half breeds who have discovered something quite terrifying… The half breeds can use night magic and using this magic they can attach parts of other magical creatures to humans and grant them night magic.

Under the command of their charismatic and intelligent leader they intent to leave a mark of society and reestablish humanity as a force to be reckoned with.


Setting


Inner City- The Inner City is walled in and the largest point of access is the Day Gate though there are numerous smaller entrances around the wall. The Inner City is the primary economic district with a sizable residential district. It is also the capital and home to the government body that rules the land. Like all cities some places are sketchier than others. The less desirable areas are crime ridden and illegal activity runs rampant in the shadows. Typically the closer you are to the capital building, Day Tower, the better things are. One would be ill-advised to wander the streets late at night. Humans are occasionally preyed upon by the odd rouge vampire that has yet to be corralled and treated.

Outer City- The Outer City is home to a very large civilian population that is not as densely populated as the city, provides more amenities to families, but can be more expensive and less convenient for some. The majority of the residences have to commute into the city for work and school

Under City- In the swerves that supply the city with its water lies the Under City. It boasts a bustling black-market where one can buy weapons, relics, and even human meat. It is naturally a favored meeting spots for the less desirable residence of the city and it’s not uncommon for people that go in to never come out. In the darkest reaches rests the Stein’s headquarters

Terms

Day Magic- The most common form of magic as well as the more positive of the two types of magic. It can be used in healing in its rawest forms but also can be channeled into elemental forms of magic. The more abstract forms of this magic can be used to levitate, cast illusions, or seal things. Different kinds of magical creatures can utilize the magic in different ways. Elves are one of the few races that can master all forms of Day magic.

Night Magic- The second type of magic and far less common. Night magic is not inherently bad but the magical creatures that use it tend to be less desirable. Trolls and vampires are two primary examples of night magic users. Night magic itself is not inherently evil. It can be used to do many things that Day magic can do including healing, casting illusions, and sealing things. It cannot be channeled into elemental forms but can be used in its rawest forms to cause massive destruction. Elves can use Night magic as well though it is frowned upon and considered to be a less civilized art. Half breeds of magical creatures and nonmagical creatures have been reported to only be able to use Night magic.

Elves- The ancient race has always enjoyed power over other beings. They are magically gifted and long lived and arguable have a natural advantage over all the other races. Their lofty position throughout history has made the race very proud and even snobbish. Despite their flaws it’s true that they were responsible for the integration of the races and the ensuing peace. They still hold the highest of the high positions in the government especially in the country our story takes place in.

They are distinguished by their regal attractive looks, fair coloring, and pointed ears. Night magic wielding individuals can develop strange tattoos that they often conceal.

Shifters- Shifters can take one fully animal form but they cannot take a fully human shape. When in their ‘human’ form they retain many of their animal traits making them easy to spot and easy to identify what type of animal they are. The kind of animal they can transform into is limited to natural animals (typically predators like tigers, wolves, or the occasionally avian) though they are obviously much larger than their natural counterparts. The animal they can become is randomized at birth and does not seem to have anything to do with the parent’s animal.

They are the only race that can use transformation magic exclusively. The magic they use is categorized as Night magic and can only be used to change shape. Other forms of magic cannot be learned and unlike the elves they are unable to breed outside their race thus no half breeds can be created that might potentially be able to learn other forms of Night or Day magic.

Centaurs- Another nonmagical race and longtime ally to humans. They are good nature creatures and have always pushed for nonviolent conflict resolution. Similarly to humans they do not occupy the loftiest rung on the social ladder. They are regarded as inconvenient due to their size and special needs. There is not a large population in the city but there is a cluster of communities in the Outer City where they can be found occupying entire neighborhoods. They are considered odd for their customs and traditions which is why they prefer their settlements in rural areas where space is cheap and fewer people protest to their lifestyles.

Half Breeds- Half breeds are the offspring of two races. While two different magical races producing children is frowned upon they are not nearly as loathed as the children of a nonmagical and magical parents. Though most claim that being raised by mixed parents creates an unhealthy environment for a child everyone knows that the trust is that it’s considered vulgar for two ends of the social spectrum to mix.

Half breeds can only use Night magic. Children tend to take after the ‘stronger’ parent. So if an elf and a human reproduced they would have a very elf like child. Children tend to be sterile so no quarter offspring are known to exist.

Humans- As long as elves have been at the top the humans have been struggling. They are not without resources. If any magical race has a weakness it was humans that discovered it and used it against them. They had to in order to protect themselves from attacks from the predatory magical races. Their ingenuity is arguably the only thing that puts them above other nonmagic species and prevents them from being crushed by the magical ones. Many theorize it is their short lifespan that has led them to strive to create things that not even the elves would have conceived.

In recent times elves have pushed for ‘equality’ and humans have accepted this boon. Things aren’t terrible for humans but they are far from great.

Vampires- Vampires are known for their long history of opposing humans. They have been known to prey upon humans for food even today though it is highly illegal and punishable by death if the vampire cannot prove ‘hunger insanity’. These days they feed off of animals or if they have the extra cash, can buy human blood from ‘banks’. They are the most likely of the races to openly harass and reject humans. Many establishments run by their kind bear signs making it abundantly clear humans are not welcome (which conveniently disappear around government officials).

Vampires are characterized primarily by their bat wings(which range in color to black to very pale flesh tones) and sharp teeth. Some can be rather attract and chose to hide their wings and teeth. Vampires use Night magic exclusively and it is mostly used to incapacitate their prey.


Stein- An organization composed mostly of humans and human half breeds. They share the common goal of staging a mighty come back for humanity and the punishment of the magical elitist. They’re led by a charismatic young man with grand visions and a mind sharp enough to see that they might actually happen. He is followed by a handful of halfbreeds that act as the group’s surgeons. They use their Night magic to amputate and reattach body parts. All of their patients undergo the transformation willingly. Members that choose to attach so many parts or parts so large that are no longer discreet are considered very dedicated and allowed to live in the HQ.

Without exception the people of the organization are loyal and would rather die than give up the cause or turn in their fellow Stein members. They were all handpicked by their courageous and revolutionary leader.

All of their crimes are done strictly with magic and are all tagged with the phrase “WE ARE STEIN AND IT WILL GET WORSE”. Law enforcement is baffled by the use of magic and the selected targets and currently have no leads. The organization seems to be planning to make larger moves in the near future.

                        Mark and his brother were raised in a rural centaur community and would have stayed there had their father not been transferred upon the request of an old family friend in the city. They moved to the Outer city just in time for the new school year and shortly after the first attacks. Unlike most of the centaurs, Mark is attending a school in the Inner city. While he was invited due to his incredible musical talent he is finding it more than a bit challenging to fit into his new surroundings. Till Mathew approaches him and begins to lend a helping hand.

                        Luke uprooted his family at the request of a man whom he owes his life. He arrived with the bold intentions of fixing a broken system but was surprised to find it was a far more complex situation than he was led to believe by his old friend. Not only does he face dangers on the streets but also corruption from within. As he chases Stein he is painfully aware of his family’s struggle to adjust. As badly as he wishes to support his two sons, duty often calls him away and he is rarely home.

                        Mathew has suffered at the hands of magical beings more than most. He had worked hard to reverse some of the damage inflicted upon him and his family and appears to be quite successful. He is on the fast track to getting a great job and making something of himself. Yet he has suddenly decided to become a teacher despite the protests of his mentors. He works as a student teacher at a school in the Inner city. There are only a tiny handful of people who know who he really is. The brain behind Stein.

Derrek was asleep when she settled down for the night on the floor. It was going to be her first night sleeping in the room since he woke up. She stared up at the ceiling of the practically pitch black room. Weak moonlight allowed her to make out shapes in the room, including Derrek’s sleeping form. She studied him before abruptly turning her attention to the boards overhead. She wasn’t sure what was so different about the arrangement but she was glad no one was there to see her cheeks flushing or notice her hammering pulse.

She turned over so that her back was to the man. The unwanted symptoms died down as she forced her mind to clear. She was tired. She wiggled her hand free of the heavy blankets and rubbed at her forehead. It was sore from glaring at Billy. She sighed lightly and rolled over again leaving her on her stomach. She had gotten pretty mad at him but there wasn’t much of a reason other than she hadn’t wanted to get so dirty. He seemed pretty sorry about the whole thing. She supposed she would apologize tomorrow. They had work to do and they couldn’t afford to waste time fighting.

With that resolved she found that sleep came over her quickly. A dreamless, deep sleep.

Why did s**t have to hit the fan right when he was supposed to go home? Luke wasn’t a slacker by any means but the day had been long and he was exhausted. He had practically been asleep on his feet when they got the call. He had to ask his coworker to repeat the situation to him as they rushed out of the building. “I’d don’t believe it. Someone must have seen something.” Luke was mostly talking to himself. The others were getting into squad cars while already active units were flying buy. Time was of the essence. If someone had seen something they had to get to them.

“You know how to get there?” The human from earlier stuck his head out of the passenger side window and addressed the centaur. Luke snorted, “I don’t have to. I can keep up.” It would be a piece of cake following in the wake of the cop cars. “Suit yourself… Plenty of room in the back seat.” The man patted the car door before retreating back to his seat. The car pulled out of its spot and was on the street in no time. As promised the galloping centaur never strayed too far behind the racing police cars. But he was more out of breath than the other officers when they arrived.
