Bake-Danuki (Tanuki)
The tanuki used to be held in high regard by mortals but were overtaken by foxes a long time ago. Now they are thought of as inferior to the other animal linked yokai and have lost standing in the yokai world. Even though they exist on the bottom of the totem pole males of the species have extraordinary powers when it comes to transformation and a strong connection to nature.
Tanuki spent a great deal of his time living on the fringes of human society in his animal form. He was considered a pest by humans and yokai alike. He worked hard to keep out from underfoot, scraping to get by in a changing world. He found living off of humans was the easiest path in life even if they actively worked to get rid of him and his kind. But when the forest began to be slowly cut down he found it harder and harder to keep living in the human world. Eventually he couldn’t keep up with the changing times. In a particularly desperate attempt to escape from village hounds Tanuki encountered Tancho. Tanuki begged the stranger to defend him and sure enough the crane chased off the dogs. Tanuki vowed to stand by his savior and to be a tool for Tancho to reach his goals. He claims to be willing to lay down his life since it now belongs to the crane.
Tanuki takes on a female form when transformed and goes by female pronouns. She is tomboyish (or just plain boyish in this instance?). She loves modern culture because she feels like it is an opportunity for the weak to be strong in ways that aren’t physical. She greedily consumes all forms of media, particularly ones aimed at young boys. She tries to share her enthusiasm with the other members of her group with limited success. She admires the others too much to be disappointed in their lack of reciprocated interest. She thinks Satori is especially cool for all his tricks and good sense of humor. After meeting the other group she becomes interested in Kanaye and starts to meet with him alone. She finds they share a lot of common interests and develops a crush on him. She begs Satori to keep it between them out of fear of what Tsuchigumo would do to her for liking a human.
She aids the others the best she can and can be rather clever when it comes with utilizing her abilities. She can transform into very large inanimate objects as well as living people. She has been known to take the shape of weapons not unlike Inugami’s Inu no Atama. Her connection to nature allows her to map out an area with little effort. If there are enough trees or other forms of wildlife she can usually figure out things that have happened recently in very high detail. She maintains that she is the weakest of the group and that her presence hold them back, but she says she in on the path to being a better fighter for their sakes.
She/he is represented by a raccoon with a wide brimmed straw hat, straw sandals, and large testacies.
Kuzunoha
Kuzu is a red fox of seven tails, but she became notable at the astonishingly young status of only a single tail. She married a human man and bore a half-yokai child. She is portrayed positively in all retellings as is her offspring. Her story stays alive in Noh play productions. She also had never served Inari.
What sets her story apart is that she chose to leave her son in her husband’s care and watch over him at a distance. Her son, Abe no Seimei went on to become a famous astrologer, seer and advisor to the court. After he spent a life time as a human without any tragedy becoming him he moved on to the spirit world and has since been elusive but revered. She went on to start gaining tails. She was a rising star of foxes and there was talk of her eventually becoming a nine tailed fox. She might have made it had she not been brutally attacked by a fox she believes to be Tamamo no Mae. The fox tore off two tails and part of a third as well as disfiguring Kuzunoha’s face. The incident was so traumatizing she lost much of her memory concerning the event. She might have died had Tancho not come to her aid. She believes he might have been looking for her son but ended up taking his place.
Kuzunoha never lost her refined upper class behavior. She conducts herself like a fine lady and encourages others to do the same. She scolds just about everyone besides Tancho and Tsuchigumo for their behavior. She is disgusted by Yoshitsune’s womanizing behavior and rejects his advances on the grounds that she is married. She dislikes Satori’s joking and would prefer it if he was more serious about the matters at hand. She feels that if Tanuki is going to be a girl then she should act like a proper one. Kuraokami and Ookami are both too unruly for her liking. She is thought of as a killjoy among the others and like Tancho she has no sense of humor. Unlike him, she doesn’t try to develop one. While she comes off as disapproving she likes the other members of her group and wishes them the best. She cares about Tsuchigumo I particular since she was also the mother of a half-yokai. She worries that if Tsuchigumo is told the real reason for her ‘fame’ that the girl will turn on her. The others don’t bring it up.
Her gifts are not too unlike Tamamo’s. She has a greenish colored foxfire that blinds and burns her opponents. She can claw and bite in her animal form that she uses when she has to fight directly. Her ability to transform had been limited by her old injuries. Her biggest help is her vast factual knowledge. She might not know as much as Tamamo no Mae but she will divulge everything she does have. Unlike some foxes….
She is represented by a red fox.
Minamoto no Yoshitsune
Yoshi is a man of a tengu. Or at least that’s what history says. His claim to fame is being a student to Sobojo and eventually going on to be one of the greatest ‘human’ warriors Japan has ever known. It surprises people to this day that he is actually a tengu and not just a human trained by them. People use the term ‘hero’ loosely with him.
Yoshi has changed very little since he was a youth. He started out brashly approaching the leader of the tengu on the mountain he called home asking to be trained so he could fight for what he believed in. The exact circumstances that occurred to get Sobojo to agree vary. Human recounts say it was pity or he was impressed. Yoshi’s bold claims lean towards the latter so the former is probably closer to the truth. All the same he learned to manipulate wind and incorporate it into a unique form of martial arts. He took what he learned and descended into the human population to show off. He soon got sucked into a human conflict due to his need to support the ‘right’ against the ‘wrong’ even if he has nothing to do with it. He never used his wind powers during his campaign saying it was “unfair”. Eventually the conflict came to an end and he faked his death and went on his way. No one the wiser that he had been a yokai.
Ironically, history remembers him with perfect accuracy besides the not being human bit. Accounts say he was kind to those around him and honorable. They also say stubborn, tactless, blunt, not all that intelligent outside of fighting, and a huge womanizer. He has a strong sense of right and wrong and is nearly impossible to sway. He also prefers to keep things fair when he fights. He followed Tancho because he believes that the other group is wrong but the crane has grown on him over time. The others also have earned his approval. His only beef with the group is that there aren’t any woman he feels like he can fraternize with. Kuzu insists she’s married, Tanuki isn’t really a girl, and he claims Tsuchigumo is a 12 year old. He looks to the other group for any potential partners. They may be wrong but their women aren’t bad. At least that’s what he says.
When he fights he is very direct. His punches and kicks only have to come close to do damage thanks to the extra boost his wind blades give the attack. He deflects attacks by bending the air around him. There are instances where he’ll use his wings or talons in a fight. He likes to drop out of the air and attack from above using his claws. Occasionally he’ll pick up a person and drop them if he thinks it’ll be easier and more effective then engaging in direct contact. Though he carries around a spear… he tends to forget he has it and leave it places. (He is also prone to forgetting to wear shirts)
He is represented by a large red and white bird of prey.
Kuraokami
