[Intro]
Hello, Gaia. I'm quite bad at introductions, so please bear with me. gonk
The reason why I am creating this thread is because I feel that most of the ED community can be intelligent, respectful and open-minded. I have been researching Michael Jackson for almost three years now and while the musician is often praised as phenomenal, the man is often put down for things that are not of his character. This thread is my attempt at showing the world, even if it's just a small part of it, that Michael Jackson is a very different man from what the media feeds society.
[About Me]
I originally heard of Michael Jackson when I was about 7, 8, maybe 9-years-old. I saw him in a book about the past 20 years of pop culture in the "celebrity couples" section. I handed the book to my mother and asked her, "Who is this man?" All she could answer with was, "He's a very bad man." If memory serves me right, she also mentioned (either at that point or later on) that he was a child molester. We had a laugh about how the child he was holding had red eyes and I proceeded to the next page.
I had no clue about Billie Jean, Thriller or any of his other chart topping hits. I didn't even know he was originally in the Jackson 5 or that he was originally black.
My next "Michael-related" event was when I heard a MIDI of Smooth Criminal online shortly after. I really liked the tune of the song, but felt incredibly ashamed as I saw the name "Michael Jackson" attached to it. I felt as if I was listening to "child molester music" or something of the sort. I just felt sick listening to it.
Following that event, I was in CompUSA with my mother and barely heard over the speakers something that made me realize it was Smooth Criminal -- but not the Smooth Criminal I had come to secretly like! This was a rock version that made me quite afraid as I was living in an intense bubble at that age (being homeschooled helped this bubble to stay up for so long)... I just did not like the song and I became very afraid of Michael Jackson after that. Now, as you know, Smooth Criminal is not a rock song... but its cover by Alien Ant Farm is. Apparently that's the song I had heard that one day.
I was still intrigued by Michael, though. Something about 'freaks' has always intrigued me, I guess. I would look up jokes about Michael, but it never dawned on me to look at his side of the story.
June 13, 2005 came along and I got a call from my grandmother telling me to turn on one of the news stations, as all of them had "MICHAEL JACKSON JURY TO ANNOUNCE VERDICT" plastered all over them. When the verdicts were finally being read, my grandmother and I were quiet. Count one - Not guilty. Fury ran through me, but I still had hope. Count two - Not guilty. Count three... and so on...
I instant messaged my friend (who was and still is not a fan of Michael Jackson) and told him that I was angry with the verdict, when he said that the verdict was correct and that at least in this case he did not molest anyone and it was all for money. So, I did my research. I realized he was right. My fascination grew even more as I learned more and more about this man who I barely knew anything about.
I went on MichaelJackson.com to see if his record company would have the balls to put up anything about his trial whatsoever (not knowing about his personal website, MJJSource.com, currently defunct) and found nothing. I saw something saying, "Short Films" and expected it to be weird and cheesy home movies. I saw various titles, "Thriller," "Billie Jean," etc... Again, I did not know about these so the only video that caught my eye was, "Smooth Criminal."
Back then, the video was roughly 150x100, so it was hard to watch, but boy did I watch, and watch, and watch! I was mesmerized by this incredible dancer, this incredible musician... This completed my circle of fascination and I've been hooked ever since.
Google eventually led me to a wonderful forum, MJ News Online (recently closed), this forum led me to so much information about Michael that has led me to be the supporter that I am today.
