Morning time was never a considered "happy" to most adults under the age of thirty. As an HTC Droid Eris buzzed impatiently, alarming Ferris Naomi Tigge to awaken from her slumber. The slight girl rolled over onto her back, staring up at the ceiling of her one room apartment. The blinds to Fey's window were shut tight, making sure to let no light into the nearly pitch-black room. Ferris stared up at her ceiling, seeing no visible patterns in the dark, squeezing her eyes shut. Ferris swung her semi-short legs over the side of her queen-sized bed. "Merde," Ferris mumbled sleepily. "Je suis fatigué." Ferris' native language was, indeed, French. She had moved all over Europe as a child, but lived in France for the longest time; six years.

                            so, what`s your g i v e n name ?
my name is naomi sabina le, has been all my life!

                            but what should we c a l l you ?
well, i like being called just naomi, but some people call me the do-gooder.

                            and you were b o r n when ?
january thirteenth, making me twelve years old.

                            so that means you're in which g r a d e ?
                                eighth

                            it should be obvious, but y o u ` r e . . . ?
                                a girl!

we`ll accept you, no matter who you l i k e. but who is that ?
boys! i'm not allowed to date though, mom and dad say i'm too young.

                                    let`s see who you r e a l l y are
Hm, where do I start? Well, I get perfect grades at school; I'm not the smartest person in my class, but I am pretty smart. I've never gotten anything under an "A". Mom and Dad would be very angry if I got anything lower. You could say that there is a lot of pressure on me to be the perfect child, since my oldest sister was not, but I don't mind! I'm optimistic and always happy. You say the glass of milk is half empty, I think it's half full. You could say that I'm sheltered; I'm not allowed to drink soda, eat unhealthy food, watch television shows like MTV, VH1, BET, SpikeTV, and so on. I can't have a MySpace account, but Facebook is okay, because my parents have their own accounts and can monitor my statuses, friends, and messages/comments. I have a cell phone, an iPhone to be exact, with unlimited text messaging and internet usage, but my parents also monitor that. They don't want my mind "corrupted by the evils of the world." I can't cuss, but sometimes, when I'm really mad, I'll say something bad. Hm, what else? Oh! I organized the whole welcoming ceremony for the new students! I helped pair each new student with an older student who knows the school. I would describe myself as peppy, nice, happy, and charitable. I volunteer at charities, donate old clothes to GoodWill, volunteer at animal shelters and at food banks and at women shelters and other homeless shelters. I pretty much volunteer anywhere I can!

and how you g o t that way
I was born on January thirteenth, 1996, in Hà Nội, Vietnam. Hà Nội is one of the "special class" cities where the rich and famous families live. In Vietnam, you are born into a social class, it's very hard to earn your way into an upper-class city. Mom and dad moved out Hà Nội after my mom's parents died, she inherited a great load of money and my father promised her a fantastic life in the USA. Only a couple of months after their marriage, my sister, Lin, was born. She was supposed to be the poster child for perfection, but she didn't turn out that way; she just liked having money to do whatever she wanted whenever. My parents were busy back then, with my father's parent's illnesses, they were flying back and forth between Connecticut and Vietnam for years. I would go with them sometimes until I started missing too much elementary school. My sister threw crazy parties at our nice, nice house; ruining the paint on the walls, the Swedish furniture, the satin drapes, the bamboo floors, and my dad's precious record collection. My parents were filled with too many other worries to pay attention, though. The nannies quit their jobs when my sister became old enough to realize she didn't need a nanny; I was still the youngest, eight years younger than Lin and still in need of a nanny while mom and dad were away. Lin barely graduated and moved to L.A. as soon as she could. My family hears from her every Christmas, when she sends a card. Usually no pictures, only a couple words like "Sunny here in L.A.! Happy holidays!" I don't miss Lin very much.

Once my parents saw that Lin was almost a complete failure, they started putting me in after school programs to make me smarter and ready for my future. I loved the attention I was getting from my parents. As a child, I was very humble and modest; never embarrassing my parents at dinner parties or with my grades in school. I was the poster child for perfection in their eyes, and whatever made them happy made me happy. I started helping out at my first charity when I was ten years old, right around the time my sister was leaving. I found out that I loved helping people, as cheesy as that is, and I'm super excited for the welcoming ceremony for the new students!

                                                  the cheery do-gooder

xxx"Naomi!" a short Vietnamese woman called. "Naomi Sabina! Wake up, dear!" The woman called again, her short black hair flopping in wisps around her red-framed glasses. The tiny woman flipped through the Vogue magazine she held in her hands, legs crossed, as she sat on the beige leather sofa. The cook in the kitchen scrambled around, finding ingredients for the various blueberry wheat waffles, apple wood smoked turkey bacon, homemade almond soy milk, and fat-free shredded hashbrowns. A taller, but still short, Vietnamese man walked out of the den down the hall, New York Times newspaper and a soy latte in hand as his slippers padded on the floor. "Morning, dear." He said, sitting in the matching leather recliner. The leather squeaked as he sat, leaning back until the foot rest popped out and supported his little feet. "Where is Naomi? She'll be late if she does not hurry."
            ~ ~ ~

xxxA lump underneath a plain white down comforter wriggled and moved until a shock of long black head of hair sprouted from the covers. Light streamed in from the floor to ceiling windows, covered by a gauzy white curtain, which only helped to block people from looking into the room of twelve year old Naomi Sabina Le. Loud voices were down two flights of stairs, carrying up to the third floor of the house — or mansion, as some would call it — which was Naomi's floor. Yes, floor. Instead of just having her own room, her generous parents gave Naomi her own floor of the mansion when she was nine years old. There was a small kitchenette, a laundry room, living room, Naomi's bedroom, and the master bathroom. The twelve year old Asian girl sat up on her California king sized bed, her black hair tangled around her face. Naomi stood, then turning back to her bed and pulling the sheets up to her pillow, making her bed. She was always the charitable type, doing the maid's work around the house, sometimes even cooking for the cook downstairs. Naomi's parents did not see why their daughter was so willing to help people when it was their job to be helping Naomi.

xxxNaomi walked over to her closet, where her First Day of School outfit was hanging. The Asian girl smiled at her closet mirror, then walked into her master bathroom. The bathroom had the colour scheme of light green, grey, and light blue. Naomi stripped of her clothes and stepped into her large shower. After showering, Naomi stepped out into her room and began to dress. Two knocks rapped on her door as Naomi laced up her Hi Top Converse. "Yeah?" Naomi called. "The driver is waiting outside for you, dear. Mommy and I are leaving for work so have a good day at school!" Naomi's father said through the door. Naomi walked up to her door, turned the handle and smiled at her father who stood before her in a Valentino pinstriped suit and red tie. The older man smiled at his daughter, his eyes crinkling around the edges. Naomi's head was up to her father's, meaning she was abnormally tall for a twelve year old Vietnamese girl; all five feet and six inches.

xxxNaomi and her father walked down the stairs together and made their way out of the mansion, Naomi's mother trailing behind them, talking on her cell phone in rapid Vietnamese. Naomi hugged her parents, then got into the blacked out BMW as it idled in the driveway and shot off once Naomi's door was closed.

                                                  the cheery do-gooder

xxxNaomi kept up her fast pace as she walked down the school's hallways, posters and fliers about up-coming school dances, club meetings, photographers for senior photos. Some fliers were peeling off of the walls, the loose edge fluttering as student bodies moved around and breathed. Naomi smiled to herself, knowing that the school was doing a great thing for these homeless children. Naomi had never seen the homeless children on the streets, only the poor adults as they sat on corners in their ragged clothes and cardboard signs saying things such as, "Needs money for children at home," or, "Please help, God bless." Naomi had always been a sucker for those poor people, giving them any change in her wallet or any food she had. She loved the feeling of helping someone, knowing that she had made their day brighter.

xxxA s Naomi walked, she heard footsteps follow up behind her, then fall into step beside her. Naomi looked and saw that it was Rafe, one of the other students helping out with the homeless kids. "Good morning, Rafe. Yeah, I'm heading there right now. I saw Dania down the hallway, but I don't think she's as eager to be helping with the students." Naomi said, keeping up her smile. Naomi guessed that she was most likely the only student actually excited. Naomi had hoped that the principal would set up a meeting with the homeless students and the helping students, but he did not. Instead, they all met on the homeless kids' first day of school. Naomi checked the time on her iPhone, also seeing that Frankie, her parents, and her older sister had texted Naomi, saying encouraging things such as, "You'll do great! Love ya!" from Lin. "You'll be fantastic, kid," from Frankie. "We're so proud of you! Do good! Lots of love," from her parents. Naomi smiled and cleared out of her texts, looking at the time and slipped her iPhone back into her pocket.

xxxThe two schoolmates reached the principal's office within a couple moments, walking into the large office where the school's secretaries sat at their desks, chatting on the headpieces and scratching down notes at the same time. Sticky notes piled up in their spaces, filling the frames of iMac computers. Naomi walked up to the one secretary not talking on her headpiece. "Hello, Mrs. Therby. Is the principal busy? Rafe and I are here about the homeless student ceremony," Naomi said with a kind smile. Mrs. Therby nodded, typed a few things on her keyboard, and looked back up at Naomi. "The principal is busy at the moment, but should be ready in about five minutes. So go ahead and take a seat, I'll call you in when he's ready," Mrs. Therby said with a tight smile. Naomi and Mrs. Therby had gotten to know each other very well, not because Naomi was sent to the office, but because Naomi and the principal had many meetings about school related topics, like fundraisers, dances, the yearbook, etc. Naomi turned to Rafe, shrugged, and sat down in one of the very comfortable seats in the office.

                                                  the cheery do-gooder

xxxAs Naomi sat in the main office with Rafe, waiting for the Mayport principal, she noticed some scraggly-looking kids walk in; a pair of twins, a boy and girl who seemed to be around Naomi and Rafe's ages, and an older boy and girl who must have been around the senior age. Naomi also noticed Riley, or as he liked to be called, Kid, walked in. Naomi waved and smiled at Kid. She knew that he didn't have many friends, and she liked knowing that he had at least one; her. Naomi had always thought Kid was cute and very nice; he wasn't loud or extremely quiet and he didn't seem to mind her presence. Naomi thought Kid was cute and nice, but she knew that her parents would not approve of him; they barely approved of her friendship with Rafe. Naomi's parents weren't exactly strict about everything; just boy-related things.

xxxAt last, Mr. Miller, the principal, came out of his office. Naomi stood, and smiled at Mr. Miller as he walked towards the group. She walked over to the group of homeless children and stood next to the one boy that looked about her age; she wasn't sure what his name was, but she knew that she would find out soon enough. As the principal talked, she watched as his emotions flashed across his face; none of which seemed happy, only nervous and possibly uncomfortable. Naomi listened intently to what the principal said, even though she knew most of what he was saying; that the kids that were the same age would have the same schedule as their partner, the rich partner should not leave the new student alone somewhere unless he/she knew what he/she was doing. Naomi looked at the group of new students and found herself watching the littler girl that was about Naomi's age, as her face lit up when she and her friend had the same schedules. Naomi couldn't help but smile at the other girl's happiness.

xxxMr. Miller finished up his speech quickly and somewhat uncomfortably by pairing up the new students with the old students. Naomi looked at the boy she was paired with and smiled nicely. "Hi. I'm Naomi." Naomi said, putting out her right hand for the boy to shake.

[ OOC ; Kind of a crappy post. :/ Oh, and I couldn't find more pictures of my original character so I'm using some others, too, just so everyone isn't confused. (: ]

                                                  the cheery do-gooder

xxxNaomi looked at the boy, examining his face, his clothes and his body language. He seemed eager to leave even though he hadn't even started the day. When Gavin rejected Naomi's hand she smiled and put it back to her side. "Well, it's nice to meet you, Gavin." Naomi said sweetly, hoping to bond with the boy to make his school experience a happy one. She noticed that he seemed aggravated with the other girl, Paige, when she was excited to have classes with Gavin. Naomi also noticed that when Paige had said something about Spanish class, Gavin seemed to grow mad, or at least frustrated. Naomi thought about it for a moment, and then began to blossom the idea that the boy either couldn't understand written English, or was taught to understand a different language. Naomi had learned Vietnamese as a child, but when she was old enough to attend school she spoke more English than Vietnamese. She loved speaking the language, especially writing and reading it. Most of the books Naomi owned were in Viet, as she called it for short. Naomi didn't like the English language as much; it was hard to learn when Viet was her first language. English didn't follow its own grammar rules and had so many slang words.

xxxNaomi cleared her mind of her jumbling thoughts and looked around. All of the partners were talking and introducing one and other. "So, lets go check out the campus, I'll get Rafe and Paige to come along." Naomi said. She walked a few short steps to where Rafe and Paige were standing and smiled at them. "Would you guys like to come with Gavin and I for a tour?" Naomi then added, "Gavin and I are going to get started. We'll see you guys later if you decide not to come with then." Naomi smiled and walked back to Gavin. "Shall we?" Naomi linked her arm through his, even though she was sure he didn't want any physical contact with her. Naomi turned her head back slightly and looked at Kid for a fleeting moment.

xxxNaomi led Gavin down the hallway of lockers and walked up to hers. "If you ever need to use mine, go ahead. I don't mind sharing." The girl said with a winning smile. She had considered whether Gavin would try to steal any of her stuff, but she figured — hoped — that he would be too nice to steal something of hers. "So what do you think of the school? I mean, you haven't seen very much of it but we're working on that. Would you like to see the cafeteria? Or the gym? Or do you want to check out our classes?" Naomi rambled as they passed other peers in the hallway. Some looked at Naomi and Gavin, more Gavin than Naomi, as if he were something contagious; that they would catch a disease if they stepped to close. Others looked at Gavin and smiled at him, but more in a "I feel bad for you" sort of way, instead of "Oh, there's a fellow peer" kind of way. Naomi smiled at all of the kids that passed her and smiled no matter how they looked at Gavin. Naomi didn't like being mean to others, even just looking at someone meanly made Naomi feel bad. Naomi knew that she was a goody-two-shoes but she also thought that everyone at least liked her.

                                                  the cheery do-gooder

xxxWhen Gavin spoke to telll Naomi to never touch him she lifted her hands up in a retreat and smiled. "Sorry." She said, sincerely sorry. She figured that Gavin didn't have a very good home life, obviously, for he didn't like people looking or touching him; he was out of reach. Naomi decided that Gavin didn't like being around people who thought they were superior; Mayport was full of kids who thought they were better than others... In this case, it seemed that every kid thought they were better than the homeless ones. Naomi didn't understand the point of judging others; just because these kids were homeless didn't mean that they were bad kids. For some of them, it isn't even their choice to be homeless. Naomi furrowed her brows, something she rarely did and thought for a moment, forgetting her surroundings and who was around her. Naomi didn't see why someone would even want to judge another kid; they could know that kid for years then finally decide "I don't like you because I heard you did this." Naomi saw rumors and judging close to the same thing, because you hear a rumor and you judge the person for it, and instead of asking what had really happened you just go off of the lies.

xxxNaomi heard Gavin begin to talk, and stepped out of her reverie and listened to him. She couldn't help but smile a little when he talked and said, "I don't like school. I didn't want to come here." Naomi almost laughed, but then decided Gavin might get mad at her for laughing. "You're doing something I don't like, actually. Judging. You're judging how school looks and because of that you don't want to be here." Naomi said smiling slightly. More students passed by, most looking at Gavin and clearing the part of the hallway that Naomi and him were walking down. Just then, Gavin asked something Naomi heard almost daily, "Why are you so happy?" Naomi smiled and felt like laughing, but at the same time she felt like ignoring the question and moving on. "I could ask you the exact opposite," Naomi said instead of giving the straight answer. She figured not answering might win some points with Gavin, which she was desperately low on.

xxxAs the two kids walked down the hallway, Naomi noticed Rafe and Paige down the way passing out muffins. Just then, Naomi's stomach growled; she had forgotten to eat breakfast because she was in such rush to get to school early this morning. Naomi reached out, as if to take the sleeve of Gavin's jacket but decided not to. She walked faster to catch up with Rafe and Paige, who were holding hands. Naomi thought about that for a moment and smiled a little; she could see them together, and it would be cute in her opinion. Paige seemed more than happy to pass out muffins to her friends, or as Naomi figured Paige called her "family." Naomi almost envied how close the homeless children seemed to be; her family barely saw each other in the mornings, only rarely when her mother and father went to work later. They usually left before she even got up and was then home alone with her cook, which Naomi didn't mind too much. She and Isabelle, the cook, got along very well. Isabelle even taught Naomi some Italian, for that was Isabelle's native language, just like Naomi and Viet.

                                                  the cheery do-gooder

xxxNaomi was taken aback by Paige and Gavin's remarks. She had never meant to offend anyone, but she figured they were tense and unsure. "Sorry," She mumbled, not wanting anyone to attack her with words again. Naomi looked around for a moment, looking for some distraction but finding none with all of the mean looks that were shot at Naomi and the group she was standing with. She didn't both smiling back, feeling slightly dispirited. Naomi watched as the group conversed for a few more minutes, wishing she had someone more compatible than Gavin. But she was determined to at least be his friend, maybe not by the end of the day but by the end of the week. Naomi was almost surprised to hear Gavin speak to her. "I may not understand what your life is like, but I want to help make it better. Just let me know if I can do something for you." Naomi said with a small smile. She wasn't surprised that Gavin had a hard life; homeless people didn't have it easy, obviously. No formal education, no permanent home, no family; that would be hard for any one of the kids in Mayport to understand.

xxxNaomi looked from face to face at the kids who walked by, knowing that each one of them had a house and family to go to at any time. They had money and cars and food; the homeless kids didn't. Naomi had worked with homeless people enough to know that some of them barely ate anything for weeks. Naomi knew of the hardship that adults went through, but for kids? It must be twice as worse. Naomi looked at Gavin, taking in his face; the specks of dirt in his pores, somewhat greasy hair, tattered clothing and felt the need to help him, to give him a real home. She knew that if she told Gavin what she was thinking, he would act like he didn't need it, that he didn't mind living the way he does. Naomi, though, knew that no one could like living like that.

xxxRafe and Paige excused themselves and began walking off. Naomi was about to ask Gavin where he wanted to go next, but he answered before she questioned. "Oh, okay." She said as Gavin walked down the hall without her. Naomi caught up to him and decided not to talk; she wanted to be on his good side and to be his friend even though she was sure he didn't want or need her around. Naomi pushed her lips together and walked alongside Gavin.

xxxNaomi walked alongside with Gavin, trying to ignore all the glaring eyes darting daggers at Gavin. Naomi felt almost protective over him; no one knew what he has gone through in life or how hard it has been for him. Naomi knew, though, that Gavin was a tough cookie to crack; he was so set on being independent that he barely let his own family in and help him out, at least from what Naomi has seen in the short fifteen or twenty minutes they have met. Naomi started quite violently when she heard her loud iPhone ring tone; it wasn't even a dramatic ring tone, just those few dings and dongs that are the famous iPhone ring tone. The Asian girl pulled out her cell phone and checked what the screen said, "New message from Lin Le!" Naomi was surprised to see that her sister had texted her, let alone twice in one morning. The girl checked what the message said and wasn't sure what to think of it: "Hey little sister! Me and my husband are coming down to Mayport for the holiday! I already talked to mom and dad, and they're letting me and Brad stay at the house! See you later today!" Naomi was astonished that such an event was happening; Lin coming back to Mayport, Connecticut after living in Los Angles for three or four years. Lin hated Connecticut and told our parents that she was never coming back after her trauma here.

xxxNaomi was too confused and surprised to even notice that Gavin and her had walked up to Rafe and Paige, again. Naomi wasn't sure why Gavin kept following them around, he lived with Paige already, but maybe he just liked being around her. Naomi wasn't so sure of that after Gavin tried to say a witty comeback to Rafe, when Rafe and Paige were talking about Paige's, apparently, dirty hands. Naomi furrowed her brow and tried not to smile at Gavin's lame remark. Gavin didn't seem like the kind of person to stand up for someone else unless it was really needed. In this case, no outside opinion seemed necessary.

xxxNaomi heard Paige begin to talk about how all of the homeless kids became a family. Gavin seemed excited to talk about the story; it was the first time all morning that Naomi had noticed Gavin animated about something other than being angry at something or someone. Naomi waited and listened for Paige to begin the story.
