The trouble with adventures, even the famous ones, is that they always were slow to begin. Don Quijote had pages of useless text going on about how Quijote went mad reading into all hours of the night, until they got to the part where the disillusioned elder galloped around, stabbing windmills and wearing a barber's basin on his head. And even then, although it was given all the hype as the best story ever told, she couldn't muster up enough enthusiasm to fully respect the so called knight errant. Paulina Bourbon had hoped that her own adventure wasn't so tedious to begin, but so far like every other knight's tale she'd read and heard of, it left something to be desired; the only mildly dangerous thing they'd run into were her betrothed's eager subjects. And those were simply loyal townsfolk dying to have some contact with the prince and girls giggling and swooning over him as they rode by. That was amusing in its own sense, seeing as every time her eyes fell on the other female, her sharp features were twisted in disgust at the situation, jaw locked and dark eyes firmly focused ahead, determined to find some foe in the tranquil scene before them. But alas, all there was was town, one small building after another. The blonde smirked, watching the other female become clearly agitated and start off ahead of them. It was either catch up, or be left behind to miss all the fun. She looked at Seth with an almost challenging c**k of the head. The blue blood was a seemingly perfect fit for his role as prince to the nation. He was easy on the eyes with his dark eyes and tanned skin, polite to even the girls that drove their other companion away. But the Honourable doubted that was all he was. Like every coin, he too had another side than just the mild - mannered royal that was publicized. No one was perfect. A smile played with her lips. Not even the prince.

A pair of deep cerulean eyes scanned the road ahead, watching the raven haired woman and her horse disappear into the forest ahead. 'Try as you might, Miss Drummond, I'm not going anywhere.' Paulina Bourbon chided silently, giving her heels a squeeze. Granted, Elsabeth Drummond could easily end her life with a deft swipe of one of her infamous daggers cross her neck and many would consider chasing after her into a forest would be foolish, the blonde found her more as a source of entertainment than a threat. In the twenty minutes she'd known the woman, it became clear that the huntress did things only when and if it benefited her. And unless she was planning on marrying the prince, killing her would reap nothing, not even for the blood lusting Elsabeth Drummond. Although she was the most notorious witch huntress in their small sector of Afriatus, and if there was ever a woman to fear, Elsabeth was definitely that woman; she was more of a source of entertainment rather than a threat to the petite blonde. She was said to have slew a thousand men with but two daggers and her bare hands; and if that wasn't impressive enough, escaped the clutches of Carlion, a witch ring's leader, after two weeks of brutal torture and returned just two days later and demolished the whole tribe. And instead of worrying about not to please the huntress and have as little contact with her as possible, Paulina Bourbon was simply trying to have a little fun in this life. And to join her was just the way to do it.

It was quiet as her horse galloped to the Drummond's side. Complete and utter silence blanketed her, only broken by the soft clopping of the horse's hooves upon the fresh earth. And then, like flip was switched, everything came to life with one simple word - attack. Paulina felt a grin slide over her face, pleased at their opponent's chivalry. 'A warning, how polite.' Excitement beat like a drum through her veins. This was it. Adventure. A woman charged at Elsabeth. And although she fully could handle protecting herself, a small hand reached back in a liquid moment to her back, retrieving a bow and arrow. She nocked the arrow with ease, closing her left eye as she brought it up to her eye. The Bourbon'd locked her aim on the stranger when it happened. A small snap! and suddenly, she fell from her mare landing on the ground hard. Lina winced as she hit the earth, her arrow slipping from her bow, flying into the depths of the forest. The woman felt a small disappoint in her stomach at its loss. A perfectly good arrow, gone. She stared up at the horse, lips pressed in displeasure. She tried shrugging off the net, crawling out from underneath it but it contorted and there seemed like there wasn't an exit. She almost smiled at the irony. Here she was, instead of capturing the witches and warlocks that 'terrorized' the lands, captured herself.

Her gaze rose to meet her captors'. Two men and a woman, but what surprised her was that they looked neither old nor hideous. How peculiar. Paulina'd read as much as she could get her hands on and always their kind were portrayed as either wise magic makers like Merlin or troublesome rascals, ancient and bitter. But they were like any other citizens she'd seen in her four and twenty years. She inched forward, her eyes locked on their leader as he demanded they surrender or be held hostage. A smile once more threatened to expose itself. If they surrendered, they'd be hostages. If they didn't, they'd be hostages. She liked the great variety. And suddenly, the heavy ropes of the net removed and an arm went round her waist, hoisting her up to a standing position. But something was wrong. She was being held captive, of course something was wrong, she scolded herself. But it wasn't till she tried to stand up that she found out what else was amiss. Her arms and hands couldn't move. It was like the appendages had suddenly been paralysed and she was immobile. The blonde stared in wonder at them. She tried to wiggle her fingers. Nothing happened. She tried once more, but it was to no avail. She glanced at the man that'd pulled her up with a bewildered look on her face. What on earth had he done to her? She didn't know, but she didn't like it one bit. Her ears then heard the other angrily asking what he was doing. 'Yes, what is he?' In all the books she'd read, captors kept their captured, not had nets taken off them. But then again, she'd never read books about magical captors or hands that wouldn't move. Things were quickly straying from the path the books had weaved.

At the mention of being carried, the blonde couldn't help but c**k an arched brow. The twenty-four year old surveyed the male closest to her. He did have some muscle to decorate his thin frame but she hardly thought he could manage carrying her all the way to whatever god forsaken place they were taking them. The woman casually strolled cross the net, attempting to kick it slightly as she approached to her horse, her arms hanging limply from her figure. The net, however, remained where it had before, Lina noted silently. She stared at the creature its eyes alight in a growing fear, had she had the use of her arms she'd have soothed the poor thing. And as if it could sense it, the horse nudged her arm with his head. "I'll be walking or riding, thank you." she remarked civilly to the warlocks. The leader approached Seth and Elsabeth. Her stomach dropped, but her face remained calm. He leaned closer, and glared at the huntress with such intensity it made her pity her. He then took the liberty to spit in her face. How chivalrous. And then the warlock's dark ebony eyes fell on hers, a look of pure venom upon his face. She merely looked back, chin raised in defiance. She was a proud noble, skilled in archery and very soon, a royal of this country. It would take more than just a stare to scare Paulina Bourbon. Even from a warlock.

life is either a grand adventure or nothing at all.

When my father told me I was getting married to a prince I hadn't met since I was seven and shipped over to Arcandus for a month before my wedding without so much of a say in the matter, instead of throwing a fit over how I wasn't in love or why I had to marry rather than my sister; I was worried about my books. I didn't care much what happened to me, as long as my books were fine and coming with me. Father, on the other hand, had another view on the matter. He didn't want me to bring any - which was ridiculous. And after all the years of work I've put into collecting them, how on earth could I leave them to sit upon the shelves, probably untouched for years with dust eating away at them till there's nothing left. That just wouldn't do. My staff is all very kind and able, but there are things I like to attend to myself. And so, after much negotiation, I was permitted to bring only a small portion of my books, the others were to be taken care of until the wedding was out of the way. So, after scouring the shelves for hours on end and nights I laid awake when I could've slept, I narrowed it down to 2,500 of my favourites. Needless to say, I made quite the entrance. But looking back, I suppose I should've been more weary and thought more of the situation. Getting married is a big thing, regardless whether it's to form a bond or out of love. Although Carinthia is a quiet and small kingdom, often left in the shadows of the more industrial advanced nations, it's very dear to me. Our citizens mostly consist of farmers in the south sector, while in the north it's more industrial focused. We've got three national languages, all of which I've mastered since I could speak. To me, to switch from one to the next in a span of two minutes is perfectly normal. After all, I am a princess. And princesses speak to many people. Although, I haven't aside from my people, but nevertheless. Where I'm from, Dezaerth, we speak the most rare, Dezare. Most folk don't have the patience to learn it if not a native speaker, as it's full of sound changes and is very difficult to learn, but it's my favourite of all I've learned. Once, I tried to teach it to one of my advisor, but he got so fed up he resigned, saying he didn't want to bother with our sector and its language. Which is a shame, but understandable. Some people just don't love languages like I do. In fact, the only other person I've met that seems to share the passion I have for them is Mr. Juan Aalderink. Not even my lady in waiting seems to care to speak all our country's languages, let alone others. And because our main industry is in books, we've got books circulating in many languages, from the best known and spoken to the least. Perhaps being from Carinthia sealed my fate as an avid book lover and a linguist, as I've had to learn many languages in order to read some books and to speak with our locals during our travels.

But that's not to say I wasn't worried about getting married. I am, believe me. It scares me so much, I've been reading more than ever just to escape from it. Rina's been nagging me to put down my books, and I would, I really would, but all these wedding plans make it seem more real than it ever has. My kingdom's in chaos due to a civil war and a lack of a leader to put it in line. My father is a good, fair man, but ever since my mother's passing he's been distant to our people's wants. An advisor of his has taken over for the time being and he's raised the taxes, causing a rebellion. My only chance at saving my country from being ripped apart is to marry and become queen of Carinthia. So if marrying the prince is what I have to do, I will.

she's come from her kingdom all by herself to be married to the prince. she's only met him a few times, so she's not sure how she feels about this. in all honesty, she doesn't feel as if she's ready to be married. but she can't tell anyone this. her country is having economic problems and is being torn apart by a civil war. an alliance would do a lot to ease political tensions in her country. but still, she's nervous. the only one she can really talk to is the ambassador. she admires the wild maid for her independence and is becoming fast friends with the fake.

carinthia

a prosperous country, carinthia is set at the edge of a giant forest. hence, the main industry of this small country is printing books. the other part of the country is mainly farmland. the soil is rich and the animals grow fat. however, the country's great wealth is being squandered by the civil war. surprise, surprise, it's the poor rebelling against the rich for high taxes on the land.

This must've been some kind of Arcandian torture method for the sadistic. No ordinary torturer would like to draw it out this long. But he was. He just kept on talking, didn't even pause for a beat, just kept going on and on and on. He asked about the flowers, the location, whether it was inside or out, the colour scheme, what kind of cake would be served - did she even want cake? - if she had a caterer yet (he had a brother that was very talented in baking and perhaps she'd like to go by his shop one after noon for a testing?), and the list went on and on, down to the very minute detail on the event. And all she could do was smile. Princesses behaved as they should, regally and courteous, at all times, even when their insides were so shaken up by nerves that she could hardly think. So she did. The only tell-tale sign that she was uneasy with the conversation was Alessandra's grip on the small leather bound book tightened until her knuckles turned white. She wanted to read. The want pulsed through her body totally consuming her thoughts that weren't already occupied with wedding worries. It nagged at her and like a bothersome bee, it refused to leave her alone. She wanted to get away from this man, regardless if he was a noble or that she'd probably have to see him after this conversation. The princess was sure that had they been covering any other topic than her wedding, she would've accepted him readily and all would be well. But they were talking about her wedding and judging by the turnout for this engagement brunch, he wasn't going to be the only one. The Carinthian took a deep breath in and exhaled, trying to calm herself down. She did agree to this marriage. She'd came here almost out of free will with the little fight she put up. Her people and nation would benefit from this. Everything would be fine, she just had to get through this. She could do this. Baring her teeth in a charming but slightly forced smile, she nodded and that was encouragement enough for the male to continue on in his with his enthusiastic ramblings.

Although she had made a vow that she'd behave and refrain from reading during the brunch, but there were rules that were made to be broken. And this was one of them. As soon as the lord took a sip from his wine, Alessa saw it as her way out. She excused herself with a quick curtsey and a flash of a smile and hurried away, her ivory heels clicking with every determined step she took. The Nivola was free. Free to read, free to disappear and to forget about this wedding business for a while. She beamed in delight, her soul soared, hardly able to restrain herself from galloping out of the room. However, she used the little self control she had in her possession and made due with a brisk walk to the far side of the room and disappear into the maze of corridors that followed. The female opened the book gently, her eyes scanning the text for her spot. It was written in her language, a language so unlike English or any other she'd ever spoken. It was beautiful and Alessandra grinned at its familiar sound on the pages as the story unfolded. That too, was familiar. It was a worn and beloved novel from her childhood, read many times in the course of her life. It was comforting, its wonted voice whispering the story of a valiant young woman going to save her kingdom from the evil powers of a bad knight. There were daring sword fights, magical creatures, witches and warlocks and of course, the purest and best kind of love. The story never failed to suck her into its story and excite her. And just as she got to the heroine escaping two of the villain's minions, her name was shouted. The princess stopped in her tracks, flinching as her name hit her ears. Like a child that was caught with its hand in the cookie jar, a blush flooded her cheeks and she braced herself as she looked over her shoulder, ready for a scolding.

But the speaker was none other than her sister - to - be, and all feelings of dread were erased by Winnielmina's skipping form of pastels and chocolate hair. Andie grinned, shut her book picked up her pace to meet the other princess. Winnie was a darling girl and she was quickly growing fond of her. Despite the Carinthian royal's inexperience conversing with other people her age, she'd had made a few friends since she arrived and the youngest Kilcher was becoming a good one. She was comical with her pre-cautious fretting over her health and the way she wore slippers rather than heels as most other womenfolk preferred to do, but she was a sweet girl. She'd had an effect on the people of Arcandus too, as the hemline of many gowns were slowly beginning to rise. Even if she had rarely seen her brother, Nickolas, let alone spoke to the man, Winnie was a welcome sight. However, the news of a reading of her future with her fiancée, wasn't exactly as warmly greeted. Her smile faltered some, but nevertheless, she was curious. But curious enough to play with the fates, she wasn't sure. The last thing she wanted to be told was that she'd end up a slave in her own household or that she'd die in childbirth or something equally depressing. She'd rather not know until the time came for tragedy. But the brunette did toy with the idea of a peek at the future. Alessandra didn't worry about the validity of it, she merely worried whether or not it'd be a smart choice in the end. But even so, she heard herself respond back mildly amused and accent slightly changing the words' pronunciation, "A reading? I dunno..." An arched brow quirked as she asked. But with one look at Winnie's excited face, she laughed lightly, continuing, "Oh, alright." The Nivola just hoped that this wouldn't backfire on her.

No sooner had these words slipped from her mouth, they were joined by two males. Andie hadn't really spoken to the raven haired of the two but from what she could tell, he was a gentleman and a noble knight. But Juan, he was almost a completely different story. He'd seen her kingdom and he'd kept her company as she sorted out books prior to her arrival to Arcandus. He was almost a friend, although since her arrival they hadn't spent much time together at all. She dipped slightly in respect and beamed at them. "Morning, Ambassador. Sir. " And remembering why she'd been interrupted from her novel, she strolled towards the fortune teller's table, hesitating before sitting down. An uneasiness fluttered in her stomach, but nevertheless, the princess straightened and waited for Natalya to declare her fate. But what she got, was a riddle. The princess's eyebrows furrowed in confusion. What on earth did that mean? Rivers, hot, cold, a choice? What was she spouting? But to save herself from disrespecting Tayla by asking for a further reading, she merely said her thanks and returned to Winnie's side. And just a few moments later, her fiancée arrived, intent on receiving a reading himself. Alessandra felt herself stiffen, her eyes locked on his figure. She didn't know what to do, what to say. What was appropriate to say to a fiancée, anyways? Her mind scrambled for something, anything. But, nothing seemed right. She hardly talked to him before and to start was difficult. She absent-mindedly put her hand with her book behind her, mustered her courage and greeted him softly, "Good morning, your Grace. Everything looks lovely." It was so impersonal, Alessandra could almost cringe. But it was something.

attempt at thinking like andie one

i am andie, and i like books.
more specifically, i like fairytales.
ones with action.
love.
and good triumphing over evil.
i believe in the good of people.
there has to be some in everyone.
there has to be, right?

i am andie and i like to dance.
i like contra dances best.
girls on one side, boys on other.
we stare at each other.
perhaps a smile.
and the women dip low, the men bow deeply,
and then, the maestro raises his bow and
strikes up the band.
And we start.
Four steps forward, one to the right, and backwards.
Then we get more complicated and as the dance goes on,
we twirl, skip, rant, hop, skip change, glide.
We're a sea of radiant gowns and coats with tails,
just spinning and moving, floating and leaping.
But for the time we're on that dance floor doing that contra,
We're alive.
You can see the pairs that are passionately in love.
You can see it, it breathes, it lives so openly on those wooden beams.
They hardly touch, but every glance, every movement is so acutely aware of the other's.
There's almost electricity between them, the way their gaze is so intense.
But you can see the unhappiness people stow away there too.
The anger, the jealousy, the hurt.
Nothing is secret anymore on those boards.
But I think that's why I like it.

It's a way to live honestly without saying a word.
Without saying things that you're afraid to say.
You don't have to obsess over hours about how to deliver it
'cause nothing has to be spoken.
It just there, somehow.

i am andie, and i like books.
i like the sound they make when you flip a page.
i like reading by candlelight, when everyone's asleep except for you.
it almost feels like you're the last one alone, just you and your book.
the story comes alive,
you can almost hear the characters talk, see them move.
i like it.
and books are consistent.
you don't have to expect anything else from them except to tell their story.
and they do.

i am andie and i like languages.
i like the way each sounds when it rolls off my tongue.
i like the complexity each holds. the rules, the way rules are always broken somehow,
the way some are harsh and commanding while others are soft and are like a friend's embrace.
but my favourite is my language, Azare.
Azare's beautiful.
I don't know whether or not it's because it's mine, it's where I'm from, it's where I was raised,
and not many people speak it so it seems more private a language than English,
who you share with so many others on this earth, but whenever I'm flustered, it's the one I fall back on.

I am Andie, and I am a princess.
I am almost a queen.
I am almost a married woman.
I am almost a prisoner.
I am almost dead.

But my people would be happy.
So I'm doing this.
My people's happiness comes before mine.
You sacrifice things for what you love.

I am Andie and I love my country.
So I will do what I have to do to protect their happiness.

results: dreamer. optimistic even in the worst situations. passionate.
