■ Luminitsa was raised in Europe for the earliest years of her life, in Southern Europe to be specific. She belonged to a large family of wandering gypsies, all children where raised by the community, but that hardly stopped accidents from happening. Lumi was about eight years old when she got separated from her family. They had been visiting a city, dancing and singing and putting on little plays for coin. Everyone helped, children included. Her job, at the time, was to pick up the change as it was thrown to the ground and so she did, picking up whatever she could get her little hands on and putting it in the large box they actually kept their money in. While the rest of the troupe was cleaning up, she was still doing her job, but someone thought she was a thief, grabbed her by the wrist and pulled her away from the rest of the gypsies. She was taken to a police station where it was eventually determined that yes, she was actually one of the gypsies, but by the time the office escorted her back to the plaza her family had been, they were gone. The family always prided themselves on being as similar to their gypsy ancestors as possible and thus had no cellphones or real means of contact. She was lost and they weren't looking for her.

With nothing else to do, the officer that was going to return her to her family was forced to take her to an orphanage. It was there that she learned how to speak English on top of the Romani she spoke usually and she was eventually adopted by a visiting American family. The culture shock was hard for her to get over and for the next few years, she was constantly asking questions and trying to understand why people did certain things or didn't do others. She most certainly did not have the easiest time adjusting and she always had a small accent, but she did manage to fit in. Her personality, as she got used to everything, changed slightly. As a child she was content to do as she was told and help the rest of her family, but they left her, so she constantly assumed this new family would leave her too, but they did not. Being in America though, she had many more rights and opportunities than she was used to having as a wandering Roma and if anyone (a classmate, a teacher, whoever) tried to take one of these new-found rights away from her, she was very vocal about how she felt about it. Luminitsa quickly grew into a strong woman, she took care of herself and grew to trust her new family, eventually.

The real turning point in her relationship with her adopted parents was when she was about sixteen years old and had just stepped out of the shower to find that a few spots on her stomach were of a lighter shade than the rest of her. At first, she hid it, but when the area of lightening skin began to spread and eventually showed up on her hands, she came clean and told her adopted parents, secretly afraid they would get rid of her because she was sick and diseased.. However, the family took her to a doctor instead, she was diagnosed with Vitiligo and underwent numerous tests to see how severely affected by the disease she was. Fortunately, it seemed that the autoimmune disorders that generally come with the skin pigmentation disorder did not affect her and she would just suffer through patches of skin being much lighter than before. The fact that her family had gotten it taken care of, helped her through it and ultimately convinced her that she was beautiful regardless of what colors her skin was, finally convinced her that she could love and trust her family.

She was twenty-three when her parents died in a car accident. The funeral was very hard for her to deal with, she cried, a lot. They were her family and she'd just lost them a second time, but she had to take the good with the bad. Even though they were gone, if it wasn't for them, she never would have become the woman she was and knew they would want her to get on with her life. She couldn't grieve forever, so she continued going to school and did all she could to be someone they would be proud of. The vitiligo stopped spreading a few years later, after she had gone to college, gotten a job and moved out, so she went to see a doctor again only to find out that it was normal, the spreading could stop for years at a time before resuming or just slow down immensely and she was told she had nothing to worry about. So Luminitsa continued on with her life for a few more years. During this time, she started dating a guy who liked to visit a shooting range, so she went with him and it was no surprise when her aim turned out to be stupendous. The relationship went well for a long time, being as much of a shooting competition as it was everything else, at least until the fall.

■ When the outbreak started, she stuck with her boyfriend and his family, he still had both of his parents, now aged, as well as his younger sister and her children. They managed to get to one of the safe havens before it filled up entirely, but there was a problem. They could only accept so many people in the group. The children and their mother were accepted instantly, luckily for them, there was enough room, but there were only enough beds left for three more adults. Luminitsa made the decision before anyone else did. She told her boyfriend and his parents to go, she would find another place. It wasn't the best or the worst breakup she had, but she told him to think of her as dead, since she didn't have high hopes for living through the disaster or ever seeing him again, but at least she could let him stay with his family. He was kind enough to give her all the weapons he had that she could carry. A few pistols, a shotgun, a backpack filled with food and ammo and a few grenades.

It didn't take long for her to go through the grenades, by the time she was on her last one, Luminitsa actually took it apart, having already decided that if she accidentally blew herself up, at least she wouldn't become one of those monsters. Fortunately, she actually discovered how the grenade worked and a few weeks later, raided a nearly abandoned grocery store (yes, she killed a few zombies and nearly died in the process) and managed to get her hands on some more food and in the back, she found that the previous owner had, unfortunately become one of the monsters after making quite the stand. She killed his undead monstrosity and then took what gun supplies he had, including a small supply of gun powder. Needless to say, she had some more grenades within a few days.

She honestly lost track of time while she was on her own. It could have been years, it could have been weeks, she didn't know. More than once she found a group of people that were wandering and surviving like her. One group she had to kill a member of before leaving, another saw her vitiligo and thought her diseased and ran her off. Only twice did she stay with a group of people for more than a few days and both of those times ended in heartbreak. They got too comfortable and let their guard down, people died. However, a about two months ago, she not only found out what year it was, but discovered a group of people who had rebuilt a town, put up walls to keep the creatures out and on top of all of that, had regular patrols. They hadn't let their guard down, but they were still getting something similar to normalcy. It only took a few moments for her to find someone and demand she be signed up. After an examination by their doctor (they had a DOCTOR that knew about vitiligo and didn't assume the pigment disease to be some sort of deadly, contagious skin disease), she was allowed in and has been helping out ever since.
