Jacquilyn Elizabeth Ryker was sound asleep in her bed, surrounded by the four walls of her room, all of which were covered in posters of various bands and other things that she enjoyed. Her belongings were strewn everywhere, no real organization was visible. One thing was for sure, it was unmistakably Jac’s. Her room seemed to reflect her personality perfectly. She was all over the place, loud, and well, different from most people. The girl was as sarcastic as they came. When people took the time to get to know her, she was a bit different…softer. She still avoided talking about her emotions like they were a plague, but she was a lot nicer around them. Not that she was usually mean, she just had a rather strong personality, and some people don’t take to it well. She wasn’t really one to care what people thought about her anyway, she could actually care less. If people liked her, great, but if they didn’t, she wasn’t going to waste her time trying to change their opinion. It wasn’t worth it, she had her friends and that was all that really mattered to her. She was still sleeping, blissfully unaware of the fact that she had anything to be doing that day. That was quite far from the truth though. The night before, her band had been playing a show with a slew of other local bands they’d rounded up, nothing too big, when they’d ended up being scouted by a record company. It was one of the last things that she had expected to happen, but she couldn’t be happier. They’d been told to go to the city tomorrow to discuss things, meaning that there was a very strong possibility that the band would be getting signed. However, it wouldn’t be a walk in the park if they did. They’d have to be shaped and molded into whatever the label wanted them to be before they could really do any promotion, which she wasn’t exactly looking forward too. She didn’t even want to try to think about what they’d try to change about her. But hey, at least she would get the chance to get out of her small town and live the dream.
“JAC, WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?!” A voice yelled, startling the vibrant haired girl out of her sleep. She jumped up, effectively confused as to what was going on and quite alert, for having only been awake a few mere seconds. Her eyes began to adjust and she realized that it was Alex, not only the drummer of the band, but also one of her best friends, she relaxed a bit. “Do I even want to ask how you got in or why you woke me up?” She mumbled. He glanced at her incredulously, and she struggled to figure out what she was missing. “The window, which you should probably stop forgetting to lock. And we’ve got to be at the label really soon and if you don’t get up right now, we’re going to be late.” The words didn’t really connect in her mind, and she just rolled over onto her stomach and pulling the pillow over her head, an attempt to fall back to sleep. “Five more minutes.” Her plans were interrupted when the boy picked her up and started carrying her. “Put me down!” She protested, trying to free herself. Before she knew it, she was sitting in the bathtub with a confused expression on her face. “Are you going to get ready or do I need to turn this on?” He threatened, a grin on his face. Not even bothering to reply, she scrambled out of the bathtub and made her way back to her room.
Everything was just starting to click, and Jac began to start to panic a bit. How come she didn’t pack anything the night before? And more importantly, how come she never set an alarm? She bit her lip, trying her best to hurry, she plucked her suitcase out of her closet and tossed it onto her bed. She ran around her room in a bit of a frenzy, flinging clothes and whatever else it was that she deemed necessary to bring with her. She wasn’t exactly sure when they’d be back home, but it’d be better to over pack instead of the other way around. Once everything was packed, she realized that she still needed to get ready. The girl grabbed an outfit and was about to kick Alex out so that she could change, but then she realized that wasn’t an option. Her father could figure out that he was there, and that wouldn’t be the best scene considering that he hated the boy. She never really could figure out why, but he didn’t seem to have a reason for a lot of the things that he did. Sighing, she left the room, shutting the door behind her, and got changed in the bathroom. She ran a brush through her hair, deciding that it looked alright, before starting to brush her teeth. Quickly she applied a little bit of eyeliner, not wanting to go to the meeting completely without makeup. With all of that taken care of, she went back to her room. She plucked her acoustic guitar off its stand, carefully putting it into its case, before grabbing her suitcase. Even though she sang in the band, she wanted to bring her guitar along with her. “C’mon, let’s go!” She exclaimed, making a motion for him to follow her out the door.
When they made it to the living room, she froze. She hadn’t been expecting her father to be awake, much less sitting on the couch. This complicated her plan quite a bit, especially since she didn’t plan on telling him that she was leaving. It would’ve been much simpler that way, at least in her eyes. By the time she got home the night before, he was already passed out, so she kept the good news to herself. He wasn’t exactly person to get along with, that much was for sure. She never got the chance to know her mother, but it wasn’t because she ran out on her or anything. She’d died giving birth to Jac, leaving her dad a single father from the start. He’d always been resentful of his daughter, blaming her for taking away his wife. He turned to drinking, not being able to accept the loss, leaving the poor girl to spend her life fending for herself. At least it taught her to be independent from a young age. Her father flung insults at her left and right once she started high school, but she learned to let the words bounce off of her. She managed to ignore him for the most part. He looked at her, taking in the suitcase and Alex, and starting to look angrier and angrier as the seconds ticked by. The man stood up, grabbing her by the wrist, causing her to wince. Well, that’d leave a nice little bruise later. “Where do you think you’re going?” He asked her, voice beginning to rise. “Out. And is this any way to act in front of company?” She replied, her voice short as she looked up at him defiantly. Maybe it wasn’t her smartest idea, but she didn’t care. It wasn't like he could really stop her from leaving, she was eighteen now after all. “He’s hardly company.” Rolling her eyes, she broke free from his grip and hurried out the door, with her things and Alex in tow.
Once they were out of the house, she carefully put her things into the back of Alex’s car, before climbing into the passenger seat. The beat up car was rather full with both of their belongings, but it was comfortable enough. “Sorry about that.” She apologized, glancing out the window. He’d been at their house during worse, but apologizing still seemed like the right thing to do. The morning was off to rather rough start for her, and she could only hope that it would get better as the day progressed. She couldn’t imagine it getting worse, considering that they were on their way to talk with a famous and rather large record company. She had a feeling it would take her awhile to get over the shock of the whole situation. It just didn’t seem real to her. Things were finally starting to work out for the band. They’d be able to land actual tours and really do what they loved. At the moment they couldn’t do very much as far touring went. Sure, they played local gigs pretty often, but they rarely made it out of the state, due to funding and reasons along that line. She shook herself out of her thoughts when Alex spoke. “It’s fine. Don’t apologize.” He replied, smiling at her. She just nodded in response, turning up the radio as the pair continued to drive.
They made it into New York City much quicker than usual, making it in only an hour, as opposed to the usual hour and a half. She always loved the city, even though she never got the chance to go that often. It was fun to just wander around with no real destination in mind. As they were trying to find a parking spot, she pulled out her phone to check the time. Somehow they were there on time, with seven minutes to spare actually. By the time they got inside though they’d be right on time. Seeing she had a message, she opened it, only to see that it was from Nate, demanding to know where she was. Jac would never admit it to a single person ever, but she had a bit of a crush on him for years now. She’d always chosen to ignore it, thinking it was nothing, and not wanting to ruin their friendship.
To; Nate
From; Jac
Calm down! Alex and I are parking now, we’ll be there soon.
She slid her phone back into her pocket, right as he found them a parking spot. She got out of the car, hurrying into the building with Alex. After explaining who they were and why they were there in a rather hurried voice, the woman sitting behind the desk gave them directions on where to go, and they were off on the way. Her instructions proved to be easy to follow, and they arrived in a waiting room at eleven o’clock on the dot. ”Hey guys.” She greeted them. Jac plopped down on the couch, wondering where whoever they were supposed to be meeting with was. “Told you we’d be here.” She said to Nate, a grin on her face. She couldn’t believe they’d made it on time, considering how the morning had started.
