Appearance: Hailene Maredina Mordeth
The girl is short, much shorter than other girls her age. She usually dresses in neutral colors so she doesn’t draw attention to herself. Another thing she does is dress like a boy, also so she would not draw attention when she is out at night and she walks past dangerous men. No one looks twice at a boy, but a girl is so much more risky. She has short black hair and stunning green eyes and a pair of small rosy lips. She isn’t exactly pale, but she does not stay much out in the sun either. On her body are a few scars from when she has been in fights, but only a few on her arms. No one has ever gotten any closer than that.
personality:
Hailene is tough, and it takes a lot to scare her. Most of this is because she had seen a lot in her short life. Living as a thief toughens up a person in ways you cannot imagine. She does what she can to survive no matter what. She does know the difference between right and wrong and doesn’t cross the line very much if she doesn’t have to. She doesn’t steal because she thinks it is fun, she steal because that is her only way of survival. Often you’ll find her muttering to herself, because even though she isn’t scared easily, she is easily irritated. Almost anything would get her to become annoyed and if she is she won’t be pleasant to stay around. Her friends could tell you all about that.
history:
Hailene was raised by two people who had said they were here parents. She lived happily with them when she was a child, but she had one day overheard a conversation she wasn’t supposed to. The truth was that her parents were dead, or, well she didn’t exactly know that. What she had found out was that her father left her mother, and her mother couldn’t handle taking care of her on her own so she left Hailene with this family.
For a time she pretended everything was alright. She was young then, didn’t really know what to think of this all, but one year later, just after she turned eight she decided to run away. The last year had been tough for her, knowing the truth, and her life with this family had become awkward, she was sure they felt it to. She left them a note saying how much she loved them and left during the night.
It wasn’t easy though. She realized immediately how hard it was to live on the streets. She didn’t have any money, no friends, no one would help her. Her first night was the toughest. There was no one to comfort her, no one to tell her everything was going to be alright. It was cold during the night. She had sneaked into a barn and hidden in the hay, so at least she wasn’t freezing to death. The reason it was cold was because it was nearing winter, which she hadn’t thought about at all. She didn’t know how she could survive that.
There was a lot running through her mind the next few days. She was thinking of going back to her family, or those who had pretended to be her family, but she didn’t. She couldn’t forgive them for not telling her the truth. So she stayed where she was, or, she never stayed in one spot. She quickly learned where it was dangerous to stay, where you would get yelled at to go away, where it was a chance someone would give you something to eat, and where it was safe. She learned a lot of how life was in the city much quicker than if she had been in the safety of her ‘home’.
But things didn’t go very well soon. She became sick, very sick and the cold was what did it. She couldn’t speak without coughing, and her cough was so terrible no one would go near her. Someone had seen her sneak into the barn and she had to run out, but she was so little, she had been caught and punished severely. She laid outside that night, and she feared that if she fell asleep she would freeze to death. She was so skinny, and her clothes hung dirty on her thin body.
She was on the verge of death when four boys came out of nowhere. She didn’t know what happened. All she knew was that they carried her somewhere and it suddenly got warm. She slept for days and when she woke up she felt better. The boys as it seemed was thieves, they had saved her and called a doctor to help. After a few days extra recovering she soon found out she liked those boys. They seemed to be able to make it in the city without parents. It was in that moment she decided she wanted to become a thief and as it seemed the boy were glad to teach her. They thought it funny though that they were training a girl.
It was the best days of her life, she had finally got friends, and things only went up from there. As the years passed she got tougher. She realized she had seen nothing of what it really was like in this city as a kid, but now she saw what was hidden under the surface. She many times wondered why she was still alive, how she had managed to get away from the claws of life when she was younger and could only say it was because of luck.
When one of her friends got caught and was killed she decided she couldn’t handle it anymore. She couldn’t stay together with them because it would be too painful if one of the others was caught and hanged as well. She had learned enough to live on her own now and she said goodbye to them. They understood, though they were sad to see her leave. Hailene still saw them from time to time, but never stayed for long.
Three years later two more of her friends had been killed…leaving one left.
