From the minute she drove up to the building she could tell something was off. It looked more like an urban home than the obvious laboratory setting. The front yard was spacious and plush with tuffs of healthy, green grass. There wasn't a single weed poking its head out from the soil either. Before exiting her 2010 VW Beetle Juniper took out the paper from her pocket. Apparently, the flier she found had the wrong address posted on it, so when she met with the head scientist and signed a year of her life away to research he scrawled down the right place for her. Glancing back at the modern apartment she wondered if this still was the wrong address. Her emerald eyes turned back to the paper as she unfolded it and read off the writing.
'"3204 Blackbridge Lane." This has to be the right place.' Sighing in defeat Juniper slid the paper back into the front left pocket of her jean shorts and went to retrieve her two suitcases and cardboard box from the back seat. If she was going to spend a year here and not be able to leave for long periods of time the girl wanted to have some of her personal belongings with her. A cool breeze blew her hair in disarray and she smiled. The sun shone brightly in a clear blue sky: the definition perfect summer day.
First, she lugged her box to the front step of concrete that sat in front of the door. Juniper didn't fail to notice the uneven sidewalk when she nearly fell on her face, but stumbled back, saving herself on the way back to her car. When she had all of her items beside the front door she locked her Bug with the handy remote on her key chain and went to unlock the front door until she realized it already was. The brown-honey haired girl twisted the handle and was surprised to be greeted by piles of mens clothing. She did not mind having to spend a year with a normal, functioning person, but she knew there would be a problem if her roommate was a complete slob. Juniper didn't have OCD or anything, however, she did like to be in a organized, clean environment.
'At least it smells and looks nice aside from this mess,' she noted. Miss Adams rolled her suitcases into the building and lifted the box to the kitchen counter before going back to shut the door and trap the cold air conditioning inside. She kicked the clothes out of the way as she did.
Not noticing her unknowingly insane roommate but hearing the television, she took her things upstairs and claimed a
room. Quickly, Juniper unpacked her clothes, some of her favorite books, her laptop, CDs, movies, 3DS, and two frames with pictures of her and her parents and pug, Lennon. She wished she could have brought him, but the man she met suggested it would not be a wise choice. The girl had no clue why, but still took the warning. June kept her bathroom items and other necessities inside her suitcase, and placed her beat up, baby blanket on the
bed and gently folded it beside the pillow before placing her stuffed whale on top. She hoped her roommate wouldn't think much of it because she loved the two items so much. Once everything was in place she applied a thin layer of brown eyeliner below her bottom lashes to make her dark circles seem a little less apparent and fixed her hair as she examined herself in the bathroom mirror. If the other person staying in the apartment was a guy she wanted to look her best. Juniper had never dated, in fact a boy had never even asked her to a dance or anything. Her luck when it came to the opposite gender was about zero, but she decided not to let that stop her.
'Things may have turned sour since I didn't get a scholarship, but maybe it'll be better soon if I give it a shot,' she encouraged herself in an attempt to be optimistic.
Back downstairs, she followed the sound of an obnoxious show. She had no idea what show it was, but the people on it were screaming and speaking in a drunken stupor. Juniper walked into the room to see a young man lying on the coach, facing away from her, with headphones on. The girl bent over to grab the remote and turned the volume down from 68 to 16.
"Hey," she called loudly,
"if you aren't watching this maybe you should turn it off. I don't know if we have to pay the bills around here, but we should still probably be considerate just in case it's the scientists who are covering the expenses." No movement or response. He must not have heard her. Juniper moved to where she was now standing in front of him.
"Hello! Did you here me? My name's Juniper, what's yours?" The emerald eyed girl put her hand out to shake and gave a small smile.
