The air stirred. Rising above the level of excitement which had grown to nothing more than a dull background noise in his head, was a spike of anxiety. No... not quite anxiety, panic. It drew his gaze sharply and he looked around the packed cafeteria, quickly locating the source of the emotion. A blonde with glasses who was gesturing wildly. Josh continued to watch, quickly drinking in the panic he sensed, wondering what was causing it and how he could reproduce it if needed. Senses sharpened and he tried to overhear what was being said. The blonde was being a great help by raising his voice. Something about a shirt... his shirt... Josh couldn't pick out any more and the other was already rushing out of the room. It wouldn't be long now before he could no longer sense the full blown panic and would be unable to drink it in. What was it about that guy's shirt that brought him into this state? Josh really had to figure that out. Whoever he was, tasting his fear had been absolutely exquisite.

He hummed thoughtfully taking note of the others who were in the area, and then brought his attention back to Nagi, apologizing briefly for having so suddenly turned away. For now, he seemed to have solved his hunger and tiredness issue. That had been a great pick me up. Though it seemed that Nagi had been in the middle of saying something and someone else had arrived. He glanced over to see who had approached them and smiled as he recognized the girl. A senior whom he had met last year and had developed a bit of a friendship with. She was kind, though reserved, and when they had first met, Josh hadn't thought much of her. It was only after he had spent a little more time with her, that he had actually started to value her opinion. Though now, she looked drawn, as if something was bothering her, and he made a note to ask her about it later. "Karissa! It's good to see you again. How was your summer? You came at a good time. Nagi was just about to—" His eyes going back to the other at the table, Josh drew up short seeing the mismatched eyes. Now that was a variation of heterochromia that he had never seen before. It was startling at first really, but other than the colour it wasn't something that he was unused to.

Nagi went on to give a long and detailed explanation of his power and abilities and Josh listened attentively taking note of the retaliative strengths and limitations of each, though he couldn't help but smile slightly at the approximation, more or less, of the Hulk's famous line. The glimmer of a warning in those eyes warned him to be careful though. He didn't want to be anywhere close to this guy if he couldn't control an explosive telepathic ability. While levitation and telekinesis weren't things that were going to get him jumping out of his seat, the next two were far more interesting. Conjuration was very useful, especially to be able to summon practically anything. It was impressive and he couldn't hide that from his face. And the fact that Nagi could devour dreams actually made a dark smile creep onto his face.

                                  "Are you satisfied.... Josh?"

"Very," he replied with a curious tone to his voice. Obviously there was still something he wanted to know, but he would hold back. At least for now. Besides, he had a fairly good idea of what the answer was and would only need a simple yes or no from Nagi to see if his guess was right. Then again, if he wasn't, he might be in for another long explanation. "I have an ability very similar to yours. I can manipulate dreams, though I can only change them towards nightmares and can't devour them." Well he'd see what happened if he dropped that. Maybe Nagi would volunteer more information. Then again it might just as easily prompt him to ask questions of his own. Whatever. "There's going to be an interesting group of new students this year." he mused half to himself, glancing towards Karissa, just seeing how she was doing. But then he thought he should probably introduce the two of them since they didn't know each other. It would be rude not to. "Karissa, this is Nagi Fukui. He's just starting here. Nagi, this is Karissa Jones. She's a Senior and a good friend of mine. Once you get to know her, you'll find that she makes an incredibly helpful and reliable friend." She was one of the few people around here with whom he brought out a warmer side. Sure he was polite to most others he met, but teasing and smiles came easier around certain others.

Alex started to make his way towards the seat the Doctor had indicted when the door behind him opened and he turned to see Nurse Jenn walking into the clinic. He gave her a slight nod of acknowledgement and returned her greeting, before he turned away from the two physicians and sliped off the glove he was wearing, tucking it into one of the pockets on the side of his quiver. He heard the Nurse walk off to prepare a room and then Dr. Nightingale got started with a few rapid fire questions. Routine questions that he didn't seem to require much of an answer. He could, he suppose, answer one of the questions fully and let the doc into his head, but that would require giving more information than he was comfortable with. Besides, the answers weren't going to have a dramatic impact on his overall health. His answers to the last two might if he wasn't keeping up with the regimen prescribed to him or was feeling out of breath, but that wasn't the case. Simple answers, then, would be enough and make sure he was in and out of here as quickly as possible. Not that he had anywhere in particular to go this morning. "They're fine. No mood changes. Yes, I have. No shortness of breath." He answered each question in order and as succinctly as possible, his tone of voice revealing nothing. Though with the answer to the questions about mood changes in any family members his mind went back to the image of his mother this morning. Was she always like that or was it recent? He couldn't remember. A recent block of night shifts meant that he only really interacted with her for a few hours each day. It could be nothing.

Following Dr. Nightingale to a room, he place his weapons in a corner against the wall they wouldn't get damaged, slipped off his shirt putting it over the back of a chair and then removed his boots. Going to the examination table, he took a seat, greatly relieved that there would be no needles this time. He could face monsters of all kinds without a problem, be unfazed by the gruesome sight of their remains, but a needle was truly the stuff of nightmares. There was a word for that... irony. "I was working last night so I didn't go to the party at the Inn. Don't think I missed anything." Alex gave a slight shrug of his shoulders, unconsciously rubbing the old scar on his arm while staring evenly into the doctor's eyes. "I think I saw the clinic's lights on last night. You didn't go either. So you know just as well as I do that sometimes you have to decline going to certain events so you can be easily available in case of any emergencies." He held eye contact a moment longer before breaking it and looking around the room. The neatly organized and labelled medical equipment on the shelves, the charts on the walls. Some of the items he could easily identify since he did know basic first aid. There were others he wasn't so sure about and could only hazard a guess. But what he did know?

"Though I heard it was the usual thing. Everyone seems to have enjoyed themselves, some more than others." Drinks flowed liberally at the Inn at the New Year's celebration. A time when everyone looked forward to a time when the mosters would be gone, the problem dealt with. Everyone was so hopeful on that night, even if it would seem that each year those hopes were dashed as a resolution seemed no closer in sight than it had been the year before. The villagers were a rather hopeful group, often finding comfort in each other, but there really was no telling how much more of this they could support. "It was good to hear that most everyone had a good night. They need it." His eyes cast downwards for a moment, seemingly in thought, before he turned to face Dr. Nightingale again. "Do you mind if we hurry this up a little? I need to run a few errands before the afternoon. I'm working during the night again." Unless that was to change today for whatever reason. He would see what happened after his visit to the Town Hall.

The checkup went smoothly and quickly and before too long he was given a clean bill of health and permitted to leave the clinic. Walking over to grab his things, he paused for a moment in mid motion of sliding his shirt back on when the doctor reminded him to be careful. Alex nodded and finished getting dressed, putting back on his boots and grabbing his weapons before walking out the examination room. Dr. Nightingale really was a good man and it was unfortunate that on top of his other worries there was the added stress of the monster attacks and those who would turn to him almost daily for help because of an injury or some other ailment. At the very least, the guards should make it easy on him by going to their appointments instead of skirt chasing.

Fighting back a yawn, he made his way out of the clinic, offering a slight wave to Nurse Jenn to let her know he was leaving. And as quickly as he could go without looking like he was racing to get out of there. She was already fussing over Dr. Nightingale and he didn't want to be drawn into a conversation. There were still errands to run before he turned in for the night. Well afternoon really, but his night. A brief glance up at the sky and the position of the sun reminded him that it was nearing noon and if he wanted to have a full six hours of sleep he'd better hurry. Deciding to change his plan a little, he bypassed the town hall and went over to the Library. Hopefully the book he'd requested was in today, he couldn't wait to get started. It was and he checked it out, offering up a small and rare smile to the librarian in thanks and walked out. One down, one to go. The Church.

Usually he tried to visit Carter and watch him work for a while since it was a rather interesting experience, but he would have to go by later tonight. He wasn't sure how long he would be staying at the church, but he just felt like going. Alex wasn't the most religious person in town, but there was just... something. The harvest god and goddess had to know what was going on and they were just so silent on all of it. Couldn't they help out a little? Drive the monsters away or even give them a hint as to how to do it? Even if he doubted he'd ever have the answers to those question, Alex did enjoy the peace and quiet in the church. Something almost haunting about it, but calming at the same time and he felt... closer... to Cadence in there. She spent most of her free time in the church so it was almost like her presence still lingered—

Alex drew to an abrupt stop hearing a scream tear through the air jolting him to full wakefulness. Even if he was off duty he still had a responsibility to the town and still had to look out for the people in it. As people around him started to panic he worked on calming them and reassuring them that things would be okay, before he took off in the direction of the scream, hoping that one of the other guards would get there before he did. The scream sounded fairly close and he ran through the list of people he knew who could possibly be in the area. He really hoped that it wasn't from Sister Baykuren or Eva. The farm in sight, he looked around for Eva, spotting Lon instead. "Where's Eva?" Even if the man was terrified of women he probably would have some general idea of where she was so he could better keep his distance.

The initial sensation of being pulled along was startling at first and left Alexander feeling slightly off-balance and tripping over his own feet. He wasn't usually so clumsy, though he probably didn't quite meet Inigo's level of grace. He would be stretching it if he said that when he was this close to another person, he would be able to find his center as quickly as the mayor's son did. His reflexes weren't bad, so it only took a few halting steps before he was easily following after the carpenter and towards the tragic scene.

Oh Eva... He felt his chest grow tight and his jaw locked, lips drawing into a firm line. Even with all the loss she had suffered in her life, she had still maintained a smile for everyone, her and her animals managing to seemingly lift up those in the village around her. At other times, the fact that she stayed out in the open with the animals with, at times, little protection, was worrying. Even so, he had never thought that something like this would happen. There were so many questions, wanting to know why this had happened, why no one had been able to get here sooner. What she had been doing over here by herself. It was an almost deafening noise in his head and he wanted to scream. In anger, as a threat to the orcs, in order to drown out the noise in his head just to prove that he could—he didn't know. It was primal, coming from a base instinct that came out in times of great stress.

The sounds of the struggle going on around him reached his ears, reminding him of what was happening and his responsibility. It felt like everything that just happened suddenly sped forward, his hand was reaching for an arrow after he grabbed his bow. Did time suddenly slow? And then it over and the orcs were running off leaving Isabel with an arrow in a rather awkward place, Grahm holding his arm at an odd angle angry and no doubt saddened by his cousin's death, and Eva... Dr. Nightingale had arrived by then and was covering the young farmer with a coat. Alexander left out a shaky breath and looked away.

They had to do something. This couldn't keep happening year after year with no apparent end in sight. Alex didn't remember much about Grahm, but knew Eva was his only remaining family in town. There was an awkward silence that settled about the place and it felt like a sudden weight pressing down on him. It didn't feel right to break the silence, but the silence was almost like a disapproving figure—Eva's ghost?—looking down at them over the rim of their glasses, their head tilted arrogantly upwards, shaking her head and then turning and walking away without a second glance.

Come back, please, don't go, This wasn't the first death he'd seen and it wouldn't be the last, but to start the new year off this way. Daytime had always been assumed to be safer than any other time of day. Dust, dawn, evening, and night were the times when more mosters were said to roam. Why now?

"Stupid, idiot girl. Stupid, naive, little girl. If only you'd listened to me more, Eva. Why couldn't you have just stayed near me where I could protect you instead of running off to take care of your stupid animals on your own?"

Alex looked at Grahm and continued to listen to him speak to his late cousin, a girl whose voice none of them would ever hear again. The spectre didn't even seem to slow or hesitate and continued moving on. "Inigo..."

Looked like he would have to do a little bit more extra reading this month. The word Baku sounded familiar though, so maybe one of the teachers had mentioned it in passing last year. He couldn't be certain. They spoke of so much and very often things he considered just an interesting fact that had no bearing on his grade he just ignored.

Nagi's reaction to Karissa's innocent comment had Joshua observing carefully. It was rather unexpected to be honest. Nagi was fidgeting, his voice was halting, as his face coloured and he ducked his head, seemingly unable to meet Karissa's eyes any longer and only able to glance up briefly before turning away. This only lasted a few seconds, before that cold mask dropped into place once more. A straightened posture, a raised chin, his voice stronger and more confident. What was that? Being complimented made him act like a blushing school girl?

Josh bit his tongue, turning his head away, and picked up his glass to take a sip to cover a smirk which threatened to form on his lips. It didn't work and only seconds later: "Guess you haven't had a girl compliment you much before, huh Nagi." he heard himself saying. There really was no need for that to be honest, but he really couldn't resist. Josh was almost tempted to create an illusion of a girl and have it go up to Nagi and start flattering him. Then again, there was the possibility that Nagi would find the situation so incredible that he wouldn't believe his eyes and the illusion wouldn't be as strong. Now if only he could find a way around that little problem.

Giving a mental shrug, he turned to Karissa. "Are you feeling okay? You seemed a little overwhelmed. Do you want to go out and get some air?" She was sensitive to the emotions of others and he couldn't even imagine what that would feel like in a room full of people who were either excited or nervous about being here. Not to mention the sudden shifts at this table even. Nagi's flip flop hadn't couldn't have been pretty.

"I'm finished with breakfast anyway, so I can go with you and carry your tray if you'd like." Josh looked at the 'remains' of his breakfast: A full pile of eggs, an untouched piece of toast and a nibbled on muffin. The only physical bit of his breakfast he'd nearly finished was his drink. He hated to waste all of this but he hadn't expected to run into such a tasty meal so early in the day. If only all days could be this easy. The words were harsh, unwarranted, and said with enough force to knock a man over. He was grieving surely, but was this necessary? Alex could only hope Inigo and Isabel wouldn't take the bait and start a fight. Eva was still lying there. Even if he wanted to say something in his own defence, right now he had to bite his tongue and take it. Later, when the wound was less raw, there could be a possibility to talk about it and reassure him that the guards did everything in their power to make sure the villagers were safe.

Graham's angry tirade had just ended when Isabel decided to take a jab at him. Alex winced, not liking where this was headed and tried to tune them out. The adrenaline from the fight was starting to leave his system and he was feeling rather tired. It was a miracle he was still awake right now, but he wasn't entirely sure just how long this could last. He would want nothing more than to lay down on a confortable bed and sleep...

Jumping slightly because of Dr. Nightingale's sharp tone, Alex rubbed his eyes and looked around as if trying to remember where he was. Right... the field... and there was Grahm passed out on his face. Another body they would have to carry back into town. Slinging his bow across his back so his hands were free, Alex glanced at Inigo before going over and helping him pick up the body, being mindful not to jostle him too much and further aggravate Grahm's injury. The trip back to the clinic seemed longer than usual. His feet felt heavy, like he was having to drag them through mud. Part of him was worried he'd stumble over his own feet, but he was good so far. The extra attention he was paying to where he was going so he didn't trip, and making sure he didn't jostle Grahm too much helped him to avoid any eyes that fell on them. Alex wasn't too sure how he would be able to face anyone right now anyway.

He couldn't be more relieved once they made it to the clinic and the door closed behind them. Nurse Jenny was still here and he left the explanations to Inigo, Isabel, or the Doctor, only listening in when any instructions were given so he could carry them out properly. Who would have thought the day would be so long? Just a little longer, just keep it together a little longer. Grahm and Isabel would get the help they needed. Emotional wounds would take longer to heal, especially for Grahm who was all alone, but he did have friends in the village. Everyone would help him and be there for him when he needed it.

Just when it seemed that he would finally be able to go home for some rest after this overly long day, the Mayor arrived at the Clinic to check on Isabel and with an innocent comment reminded him about the orc bodies. He almost forgot those things had to be moved and discarded before they attracted an even bigger threat. No doubt that was what Inigo left to do. Maybe they would finish early. That would be a blessing. Alex looked around and seeing that things were taken care of at the Clinic he left and went to help Inigo clean up the Orc bodies.

Why was it that whenever it seemed as though he was making some progress in finishing his errands something else would pop up out of no where and catch him by surprise? Once he was sure things were under control, he excused himself and walked back over to the fields to help clean up. Wouldn't be fair if Inigo had to do it all by himself. Alex wasn't even sure the other noticed him as he disposed of the bodies, but once it was all done he leaned against one of the wooden posts of the fence and pushed his hair out of his face as he took a breath. Strangely, he couldn't help but feel slightly satisfied. Even after everything that happened today, a bit of hard work gave him something other than Eva's death to think about. Sure he would have to deal with that when he had a down period, but hopefully there wouldn't be many more of those.

Looking around he realized that it was getting late and almost reluctantly pushed away from the fence and started towards town. I wonder if Zoey has any rooms—of course she does. It's not like we get visitors anymore. No visitors and the number of people in the city kept going down. Sometimes he wondered if there was a way for all of them to get out of town and start fresh someplace new. Pfft! Like that would ever happen.

Soon Alex was walking through the doors of the inn and up to the counter, giving a brief nod of greeting to Jane who was eating something at a table. Whatever it was it looked good and he wouldn't mind a snack or something while he was here. "Hey, Zoey, do you have a minute?" he called towards the kitchen. Alex could hear voices that sounded like they were coming from the back and he only hoped he wasn't interrupting some important conversation. Then again, at this very moment he didn't even care. He was exhausted, hungry, and feeling down. What a terrific way to start the year. Burying his head in his hands, he wished for some form of redo button. One of those would be incredibly useful right about now.

There was no call from Hei and Raphael had made his way back to the house after letting Aprylle run around and play until she exhausted herself. Letting the pup back inside, he cleaned up around the house a little before, realizing after an uncomfortable period of silence that Hei still wasn't back. Though it didn't bother him all too much, today was a perfect day and he really didn't want to have to be inside for the rest of the afternoon working on a puzzle or cleaning up and the house wasn't in such a state of disarray that one day without dusting or whatever would make it look as though a dust storm rolled through here. He played with his car keys in his pocket, tempted to just drive into town early and meet the other three there. He didn't feel like hunting at the moment, nor was he particularly hungry and reading through the files he was given for work right now seemed like a waste of his afternoon.

Abruptly coming to his decision, he pulled out his cell and sent Hei a quick text letting him know he would need to catch a ride with Nym and Seikyo while he walked outside, hearing the sound of another car starting up. Looking away from his phone for a second while he hit send, he noticed Rayleigh driving away, and remaining in the driveway was a small book he'd seen the white haired drake writing in once. Ray guarded that book fiercely and as far as he knew, never told anyone what he was always working on. Rafe tried to catch his attention, but either he was ignored or Ray just had something more pressing on his mind. I'll just put the book in the mailbox. Wouldn't want something to happen to it. Walking over to it, he bent down and picked up the book, at first not recognizing the symbols drawn on the page that was opened by the wind, but after a moment his eyes focused on the genetics symbols drawn over the page. Charts, tables, graphs. Notes alongside it hypothesizing about the possible success or shortcomings of whatever experimentation he was attempting.

Raphael moved back towards his car, opened the door and stepped in. He knew it wasn't polite to snoop, but Ray was very much a mystery and he always seemed to walk around with a stick up his a**, looking down on everyone around him so to find out that he was doing some sort of experimentation in his free time was intriguing. Continuing to look at the page he was on, he suddenly noticed Hei's name and slowed to actually read it.

Obssession... That was the one word that kept running through his head. The hypotheses, the detailed notes about Hei, his strengths and shortcomings, and even a reference to Takashi who seemed to be linked to this entire experiment... whatever it was, it left him with an uncomfortable feeling. This in addition to what he had seen already made him think Ray was striving for perfection. Obviously in his head dragons were the superior species with faes being the only other species worthy of some form of respect. He'd known Rayleigh was arrogant but just looking at a few pages in his book gave him a whole other perspective. One he did not want to know about. Maybe he should just give it back to him instead of leaving it in the mailbox...

Raphael wasn't sure where he would find Rayleigh in town but there were only so many places he could be. Assuming that he'd gone to town to have a moment to himself—god only knew that having more than one 'wife' had to be stressful—then maybe he'd be at a bar or restaurant. A rather high-end or exclusive one at that. Rafe couldn't imagine the drake ever going out and purchasing his own clothes. Hell he probably had someone to do that for him and cater to his every need. So why am I carrying this to him again? Because he was going into town anyway and decided to be a good Samaritan. As long as he could wash his hands of this thing quickly.

He pulled into an all day parking spot and walked around until he found Rayleigh with Nethanial. That poor man. I can't imagine anyone wanting to seriously have a drink with that overly controlling sadistic dragon. Putting on a smile on his face, he politely made his way to their table and after excusing himself, he put the book on the table in front of Ray. "You dropped this when you were driving away. I was on my way into town so I thought I'd just bring it with me." He shrugged to show it was nothing and then decided it was time he made his exit before he got dragged into a conversation. But if their previous encounters were anything to go by, that wouldn't be happening. "Enjoy your afternoon. It's good to see you again, Nethanial."

A clatter and a few seconds later, Zoey emerged from the kitchen. He'd seen the barmaid on the way in and had assumed the cook would be up and about as well, but catching a glance inside the kitchen he could only see Carter. Strange. He would have thought the cook would be up and about as well, but it looked as though he'd been partying even more than Zoey last night. Shrugging the thought away, he brought his thoughts back to the original reason why he'd decided to come here.

"Do you have a room I can crash in for a while? I just..." His face clouded over and he quickly looked away from her, his jaw clenching and a muscle twitching in his cheek. In a perfect world he would be going to the beach and letting the sound of the waves relax him, but it wasn't a place to sit back, be alone, and forget your surrounds these days. What was wrong with him? It wasn't like he and Eva were ever really close. Taking a deep breath, Alex tried to get himself under control, meet Zoey's eyes and try again. His lips moved silently for a second as he thought of what to say, but nothing came to mind. She'd understand, right? There were some things that didn't have to be explained. "It's nothing."

His gaze turned towards the other people sitting around in the inn. Some seemed to have already heard what had happened earlier, others were just learning about it. What had always seemed to him to be one of the liveliest places in town was not quiet and subdued. It would pass eventually and things would be back to 'normal' but it wasn't as if people would actually forget. There were too many reminders around. The most obvious sign of unease were the weapons that everyone constantly carried around. The guards that remained making their rounds. Without conscious thought, he found himself speaking again, the words simply coming unbidden to his lips. "I'm going to miss her. Grahm was right; we're always just minutes too late. Or the moment we walk away something happens." Isabel was with Eva just minutes before she....."I wish we could do something more..."

                                PRIN C E L U C A S

In the early hours of the morning, the sun just barely rising above the horizon, a young male in his early twenties lay staring up at the ceiling in the inn in which he had spent the night. His expression was somewhat troubled and his exposed chest rose and fell evenly as he thought about what lay ahead of him. It was already difficult enough to sneak out of the palace these days with the threat of assassinations, but now he would have to contend with the added burden of a busybody fiance who would be wondering where he was and what he was doing at all hours of the day, on top of the fact that he would be in a different kingdom, far away from the one he loved.

Turning in the bed, the young man gently caressed the cheek of his lover as he slept before closing the distance between them with a gentle kiss. He would miss these lips, the softly curled brown hair which adorned the lad's head, and the pale green eyes which were now opening. The male smiled at his partner and kissed him again, longer this time.

"Are you getting ready to leave, Luke?" the brown haired male asked. His voice was calm and measured despite the obvious pain he was feeling at the thought of his prince leaving him. Lucas, or Luke as he was known to a select few, shook his head. "Not yet. I still have a few hours before I need to go," he replied. Lucas had not only awoken as early as he did because he had been unable to sleep, his thoughts constantly going to what his parents had planned for him, but he wanted to spend his last few hours taking in his lover and committing every bit of Adam to memory so he could call on it whenever he wanted to.

"Don't forget to write me; I'll be waiting for your first letter to know you arrived safely." Adam sat up and hovered over the prince, his hands brushing his soft cheek. Adam's hands were rough from days of hard work as he helped to build some of the grand buildings that were the pride of the kingdom. Lucas didn't mind though, he loved them all the same. A smile came to the young prince's lips and he nodded. "I won't forget, Adam. You know I'm only going through with this because my father wishes it." Then he rolled out of bed and stood, running a hand through his unkempt locks as he started to pace, continuing in that bitter vein until his lover got to his feet as well and put a finger to his lover's lips.

"Shh. It is your responsibility. You are a prince after all." And he was a commoner who was lucky enough to enter into the good graces of the second in line to the throne. Or would it be the next in line to the throne once the marriage was complete? Either way, the man before him would make a fine king if given the chance. "Let's enjoy our last few hours together," Adam murmured, coming closer and nuzzling him, then kissing his cheek. Green eyes met golden brown and Lucas nodded. For all they knew, this could be the last time. Pushing that thought to the back of his mind, the second in line to the throne focused all his attention on his lover as their lips moved together in a soft and ever so loving kiss.

Hours later, Lucas was dressed in his more formal attire and in his room in the palace. His back was to the door as he looked out the window, his mind on other things. They would see each other again. He knew it. He would do everything in his power to make sure that he came back home in one peace. Until then he would have to make do with the memories of the time spent in the arms of his lover. He sighed and closed his eyes wishing that he had but one more day before leaving on this journey. Or that they could stay here and the King of the second kingdom would send his daughters here. Then he could have more time…

His trip back to the safety of the palace had been a rather uneventful one and he was lucky for that. He had been so distracted that it would have been an easy task for one of the assassins to sneak up behind him while he walked unguarded through the streets. Well he did have his sword attached to his hip as always but in his state he would have been rather clumsy with it for the first crucial seconds of the fight. Getting back into the palace had required him to use the servant's entrance, and relying on the discretion of the guards stationed there. As far as they knew, young Prince Lucas always liked to go for an "early morning walk". Though… they were never around when he left and supposed that those on the shift before them saw him leave the palace. Luckily they never thought to ask.

A knock on the door snapped him out of his thoughts and he shook his head to clear it. His guard had arrived… it couldn't get any more final than this. Lucas turned as the door opened and gave a curt nod to the servant who had announced the woman at his side, Lucas turned his golden brown hues to his guard as she introduced herself. Blonde hair, moss-green eyes and she wielded a bow and a sword. Elda Nightray would be good at both a distance and in close quarters. She looked light on her feet but at the same time ready alert and ready to move in the event of danger. He only hoped there wasn't much on the way so they could be done with this entire affair quickly. It was just a business transaction anyway.

"Pleasure to meet you Ms. Nightray." he said softly, a kind smile on his lips. "I don't believe I have seen you around or heard your name before, but I trust that my father knew what he was doing when he selected the guards for this job. I'll trust you." laughter in his eyes he turned towards the window, placing himself in such a position that he could look out and watch her out of the corner of his eye. Was he paranoid? Not really. He just wanted to be able to catch her reaction as they spoke. "Will I be able to rely on your discretion during the time we are together?" He would no longer have his two favourite guards to rely on while he was out travelling and he only hoped Elda would prove as loyal and as circumspect as the other two. Although if the murmuring of the female servants was anything to go by, he would have to watch her carefully to make sure she didn't let anything slip. Either that or not say much to her. And the latter was a rather unappealing option.

Raphael shook his head and started to offer up a protest, wanting to do anything but spend time making small talk with Rayleigh. Besides, what Nethan and Ray had been discussing prior to his arrival seemed rather intimate and he wouldn't want them to change topics in order to be accommodating. The protest died, though, as Rayleigh said something about re-introducing himself and the fact that Rafe had somehow found himself under his employ. To be honest, the panther had been more focused on trying to make his escape than listening to every word the drake uttered, but this had him stilling and actually listening to what the other was saying. Would he have accepted that job offer if he had known that Rayleigh owned the hospital? Honestly, Rafe wasn't sure it would have changed anything: if Ray owned that hospital then he was certainly rich enough to own one of the other clinics if he wanted to and Rafe wasn't about to spend his time trying to figure out which properties and corporations the guy owned.

But that begged the question, if he owned the hospital, then whey participate in this experiment? It obviously wasn't for the money since he was fairly well off, but an actual lasting relationship? Maybe he would stick around for a few minutes, there was no harm in that and he could always hit the other bar after. "I should hope not," he murmured, raising an eyebrow and pulling a chair over to the table. "I'd like to think I got the job based on the strength of my resume and interview." And not with someone in the background trying to get something from him further down the line. Raphael believed he managed to show the right amount of surprise at Rayleigh's disclosure, not that he had to make much of an effort anyway; he would have never expected to hear the words from the man's mouth. The alcohol did make him more forthcoming, and strangely enough, touchy with Nethanial. Some past relationship perhaps?

"Where does that leave you now that the wins are gone? Or was the value in this experiment seeing the results of the other participants irrespective of what happened in your relationship." A researcher like Ray would have had his own agenda from the start, no? Made sense to him. Giving a slight nod when Nethanial walked away, Rafe wondered if the other would have preferred it if he came by when Ray was alone instead of interrupting. Hopefully he would be able to make this quick so they could get back to whatever business they were discussing. Sending the waitress on her way after ordering a beer, he turned to Ray with questions he wouldn't have dared asked in the Nethan's presence. "I never realized you were interested in genetics. I've always found the study to be fascinating, especially where it relates to certain psychological fields, but your work with Takashi and Hei is amazing." he quick smile twitched on his face and he added, "Even if I don't particularly agree with the methods. By now I'm sure you've made some attempt at trying to stabilize the body's reaction to a similar procedure."

He may not know all the information about what happened to Takashi and Hei, but he did know Hei was younger and other than having some difficulty controlling his powers at time, he didn't seem to suffer in the same way Takashi did. They could have been trying to do too much too quickly at first and then slowed down by the time Hei came around or even tried a different method; Hei didn't smell as 'human' as Takashi did after all. "But then there's always the risk that further down the line there is a complication and there is no magic anti-rejection drug for this sort of experiment." Raphael looked thoughtful for a moment as if trying to work things out in his head, his eyes growing distant, his brow furrowing slightly, but it only lasted a moment before it cleared and he smiled. "Of course you already know this. You are an intelligent man. " The words rolled easily off his tongue, but he could only grudgingly admit this to himself. And by now, Ray probably wanted to know what he was getting at or had maybe figured something out. Regardless, he would be keeping this for a more oppertune moment. The drake could hazard a guess if he wanted to and probably thought it was about Takashi.

He would be right, but not completely and as the waitress returned with his beer he thanked her and allowed his eyes to wander and watch her walk away, only to have his eyes drawn away when he heard his phone. Stealing a quick glance, he noticed it was from Hei and that if his housemate was leaving he'd have at least half hour before the others arrived. Didn't look as though he would have as much time as he would like to catch a decent portion of the game and he so wanted to watch Les Bleus lose. Oh well, maybe he could just peek inside for the score. "Sorry, I was expecting that text. Seems like I'll be expecting company sooner than I thought." Nethanial had returned in his child form and the air around him seemed changed. "Is everything alright?" It was refreshing in a way to see that Ray was being called on for for comfort. Maybe there was a more compassionate side to the man under that almost robotic exterior. Who knew.

tab It was the first day of summer, the beach opening today and Daniel was in his workshop looking over a nicely sized fragment of a vase he had found a few days ago. He knew he should probably make his way over to the beach, but ever since he found and dusted off the piece, he'd been studying it as much as possible and making notes. He found that it seemed to show a story of sorts. It reminded him of one of the old stories he heard when he was growing up. He thought that perhaps the images on the vase depicted one of those stories. If only he knew which one.

tab His workshop was littered with brushes of all sizes to gently dust away the dirt from items he found, books on the history of the town, various papers for reports he was working on that had to be submitted and many different items he had found while excavating. On one of the walls there was a picture of him and his mentor at a site and another of the mountains of the Umber Plateau on one warm and hazy afternoon. There were some framed diplomas behind his desk and a picture of his family on the desk beside his notebook. Overall the room was cozy and comfortable and the general silence and soft colour scheme seemed like it would lull an unsuspecting guest into a light slumber. In fact, the young archeologist had occasionally fallen asleep at his desk in this room after a long day of research and studying. He was never too happy when it happened, but the chair really was too comfortable sometimes and the sweet smell of old books soothing.

tab The only sounds that could be heard now was the sound of a pen moving smoothly over paper as he recorded his findings and of classical music playing softly in the background, and then the sound of the pen stilled, and the sound of birds chirping outside joined the sound of the music in the room as Daniel stopped writing and stretched. Standing, he walked over to the music player, the sound of his footsteps on the hardwood floors seeming to serve as a metronome until he flicked a switch and the music ended. "Hopefully I haven't missed too much of the festival," he said softly to himself. In actual fact, today was a day off and he wouldn't have even had to do any work were it not for the fact that he was a little behind on his latest report and wanted to spend some time finishing that before allowing himself to take some time off.

tab Closing and locking the door to his workshop, Daniel walked into his house to freshen up and grab something to eat. His dog, an Aidi by the name of Athos ran up to him, eager to go and after getting something for him to eat as well, the two of them made their way towards the beach. It was an enjoyable walk and when they arrived, Daniel looked around for anyone he may have known, trying to keep Athos from running after the children as they played in the sand and keeping him on a short leash. After a rather messy break up with one of the ladies in town, Daniel hoped that this year things would be different. And what better way to start than at an event like this?

                                        One Beast and only One ▬▬▬ ▬▬( ❦ )

For the yearling wolf, the day had been fairly uneventful. Wake up, play with the pups, running around trying not to get under paw, and then some time looking for something fun to chase to no avail. It was no surprise then that by late afternoon he had wandered back to the den for some much needed rest. His nap would be abruptly ended before it had even begun by a howl and immediately he'd perked up, tiredness forgotten and tilting his head to the side as he listened to answering howls trying to figure out what was going on. He would have loved to be able to investigate for himself, but knew he would only get in the way and the older wolves would disapprove. But one of these days he'd be able to go. Once he became a member of the vanguard or even an epsilon, he'd get his chance.

Unable to sleep with all the excitement and anxiously awaiting news on the packmate who'd sent the distress call in the first place, he'd gotten up to see if there was anything he could do to help. There probably wasn't much he could do anyway, but his eagerness to help had to count for something right? Sometime during all of that the Zetas returned with a boar and a delicious smelling rabbit. His stomach rumbled and he looked as embarrassed as a wolf could look, bowing his head slightly and hoping that no one had heard that, before quickly moving onto something else just so he wouldn't have to deal with any looks that may come his way.

With nightfall came the call from Alpha Ajax to assemble for a pack meeting. Tail wagging eagerly, Zeff scampered over to where the other pack members were beginning to assemble. He wondered how Ariyana was doing. Zeff was sure Cyo was taking care of her and she would be back to herself in no time. Cyo had to be the best Kappa around and he was really smart! Even if he tried, Zeff could never remember which leaf did what and where was the best place to find them. Nor did he have the patience to learn. And he'd much rather spend his free time running around and exploring every inch of Achron territory either by himself or with friends.

That reminded him that he hadn't seen Sorriah yet for the day. Zeff wondered what she was up to and if she had any interesting stories to tell. Then again, Belle might have something more interesting to talk about since she was a year older and was trying to be a Zeta. Sniffing the air and looking around, he managed to find Sorriah and Belle with Talamh. He passed, his tail stilling as he decided what to do. He didn't really know Talamh too well and those three looked to be in the middle of a conversation already.

He looked around for someone who didn't look too busy. Tacio! He was just laying around waiting for the meeting to start and surely wouldn't mind chatting a bit right? Perking up a bit, Zeff made his way over slowly, stopping a respectful distance away and waiting to be acknowledged before speaking up. Now that he was closer, Zeff realized Tacio looked just a bit tired. Hopefully he wasn't stopping the other from catching a quick nap before the meeting started...

                                        One Beast and only One ▬▬▬ ▬▬( ❦ )

Tail wagging in excitement at the possibility of hearing a few interesting stories from the Zeta, Zeff moved closer and made himself comfortable before he answered the others question. "I'm okay. I just hope the meeting isn't that that long..." Trailing off, he looked towards where Ajax was heading, wondering what he'd wanted to talk to them about. It must have been about the attack earlier today but everyone knew they had to stay on their paws and not let their guard down right?

Shaking the thought away, he focused on Tacio, shifting his paws uncomfortably against the ground. Sorriah? Why would Tacio ask about—wait, he knew the answer to that one. Tacio was always chasing after all the faes in the pack. It was funny to watch sometimes, but to be asked about Sorriah... She was just a great friend and they'd grown up together. There was no way he and Sorriah were going to be anything more than that. At least he didn't think so.

Thankfully he didn't have to give an answer to that question. Zeff let out a quiet sigh of relief when Lamia padded over. Her timing couldn't be anymore perfect. Though it didn't really reduce the amount of discomfort he felt because of the question. He needed a distraction so he wouldn't think about finding a mate, especially since he wasn't even ready for that. "But Zeta Tacio, what about Sigma Sidra? You two have been talking a lot recently." Zeff's eyes glinted mischievously as he looked over at Tacio for a moment, before going and giving Lamia a greeting. She was always so kind and gentle and easy to talk to. "v"

                                        One Beast and only One ▬▬▬ ▬▬( ❦ )

Cyo was interested in Sidra? That was news to him; he'd have to pay more attention to what was going on in the pack and not just who was the best Zeta or Sigma. Shaking the thought away, he scratched at an itch as he listened to Lamia's answer to his question. It looked like Ajax didn't tell her too much about what was going on and she would have to wait with him and the others to hear the full story. But boars were a serious issue. They were tough and stubborn sometimes and dangerous especially to a wolf like him. Even the older wolves had difficulty with them and if they were becoming more aggressive he would hate to think what could happen.

Stilling moments later when the Alpha began to speak, Zeff listened attentively, his eyes glancing at each mentioned wolf in turn. Though Tacio suggested Cyo and Sidra may be an item, Zeff couldn't stop himself from looking down to hide a smile when they were paired together for patrol. Cyo may be interested but with a job like this, something was bound to happen between the two members of the vanguard. He just knew it. Then again, his record wasn't so good for these things. Any time he thought he had things figured out, it just seemed as though the pair moved in different directions. When Tacio came back from the patrol he would have to remember to ask him about faes.

Zeff tuned back in to hear the end of the report twitching his nose and looking up at the dark sky. He smelled rain. There would probably be a storm this evening, though as much as he loved watching the lightning flash across the sky and hear the thunder, it wouldn't be such a good thing tonight. Not when they wanted to find out what was driving to boars to act the way they were and track their movements. Zeff just hoped the storm held off just a while longer.

The meeting over, Zeff looked to Tacio to see what the Zeta's next move would be. What should his next move have been? Once Ajax finished eating, he could grab a bite as well but until then maybe start to get a group together or talk to Sidra or one of the Zetas for more information? Instead, one of the other wolves came over. An older fae whose name he still couldn't quite remember. She was always so quiet and Zeff never really noticed her. He was polite if they ever crossed paths but not quite in the same way as the others.

Zeff was curious to hear what she wanted to talk to Tacio about, but got the feeling that Lamia wanted him to follow her so that they could give the other two some privacy. He felt torn, wanting to stay with Tacio so he could know what was going on and not feel like he was out of the loop, but it would be rude to protest and no matter what happened, he still had to stay here close to the densite tomorrow while the rest of the pack investigated the boar situation. "Uh, okay. Good luck, Zeta Tacio." He gave Tau a quick wave of his tail and followed Lamia.

"My dreams? I want to be on the Vanguard someday. Maybe even a Zeta like Tacio." But then again, he wasn't really as big as some of the others and knew he'd have to try really hard if he ever wanted a chance to get that position. Being a Delta was tempting too and he really couldn't decide for sure. Zeff just knew that he only needed one opportunity to show what he could do and he'd be able to find out for sure. "But hunting has always been really fun too so I'm not sure. I think I'm good at it but..." Zeff trailed off and watched as the higher ranking wolves went to grab a bite before tomorrow's patrol, mildly surprised that the Tau was going with Tacio. He was being awfully friendly to her even though she was really reserved and hardly said a word. That was strange.
