captain cooks deckhands rarely got scurvy (which if ye didn't know killed tens of thousands of sailors back in his day) cause every time he stopped at an island he made his crew scout for fruits.
Ironically my dad gave me this lesson, (hes reading a book on ol' captain cook) before I even remembered it was talk like a pirate day

Yep! Scurvy was totally cause by a lack of vitamin C and as fruit didn't travel well often sailors in general didn't get enough of it and came down with the sickness
