Though with all honesty, it would be someone who manipulates, contorts, or otherwise abuses the rules of the game into their favour. There's a certain player my general group knows of named "Paul", Moren knows who I'm talking about. Paul gets classes or builds or ideas banned or poorly labeled because he abuses the ever loving crap out of the mechanics, or simply didn't read how they actually work.

A fine example is so many people had a bitter taste regarding the Tome of Battle because he abused the maneuvers. Namely: he failed to notice [or chose to ignore] that most of the maneuvers are standard actions, and cannot be used as parts of full attacks or even with each other [there are exceptions, I'm saying most though].

Bashful Browser

What, so he was doing something like using Mountain Hammer for +2d6 damage and Steel Wind for 2 attacks in the same round?

Cause, yeah, that'd be broken alright.

You're right that players who do that sort of thing frequently out of malice or negligence suck.

Dedcadent Pants

Oh, I have loads of these, and am guilty of being one myself at times.

I've been in the games where the DM's NPC was the future bride of the Chosen Epic Hero, and nothing any character did would ruin her perfect beauty or grace. She acted the brat until my characters and another character started to ruin her attempts at dignity.

I've been the player who spent minutes arguing with the DM that my spells should have worked and had a visible effect when they had and I hadn't yet let her finish telling me what the effect was (it wasn't what I thought would happen).

One of the games I was in had what was basically a floating castle of ominpotence, and the owners of the castle could pretty much summon it and board it at will. These were PCs, by the way.

Another game I ran had a player who just didn't get the tone of the game. I'd even explicitly stated before the game began that it was to be the same tone as Slayers, Slayers Next, and Slayers Try. She just thought the game too serious.

Friendly Werewolf

Bad players? Lemme tell you about Creepy Joe. First clue that he ain't great: His nickname is Creepy Joe. People don't call you that unless something is up.

So Creepy J, he'd greet every new girl he met with an extravagant bow and kiss to the back of the hand. Maybe you can pull that off if you're smooth. Maybe it seems classy if you look like a real gentleman. But CJ? He wasn't smooth or classy, he was a greasy nerd with disgusting hair and an awkward persona.

He ran a Dark Heresy game. I was new to RPGs at the time so I gave it a try. I did the character gen session and I never went back. Someone else at the same session was so put off that he just left the gaming society for a year.

I got glimpses of this guy's games a few times, on my way to other things. The one that stands out in my memory is him and the only player he had left at the time, mid fight scene, and CJ saying "you don't get to act yet, your guardsman is still raping the whore."

That's just... how does that even happen in a game? s**t ain't right.

Darkesu's Darling

True "roleplayers".

Hilarious Lunatic

Munchkins.

they forgo all roleplaying and turn a game into boringness REAL ******** quick.
I was playing Magic with someone who was getting really frustrated that they were losing. Every time that I attacked or blocked, it was answered with, "Really?" or "Of course!" or "Is that all you can do?" Eventually when the person lost, they slammed their hand down on the table, and swept the cards that were in play onto the floor. Ugh...talk about a sore loser. I felt so bad about beating them, but then again, their complaining took all of the fun out of winning anyway.
I got one for you guys.
So im stuck in the middle BFN right? so Im here for a good time about 2 years and start rolling a campaign right? This guy whos name shall remain "Bear" wants to join I figure why not everyone deserves a shot plus he a roomie so to hell with it. Turns out he never ever rolls below an 18 19 or 20. He is professes he is a complete gentleman but when he doesnt get what he wants he throws a tantrum in character and hates me the next day. For example he wants to do to buy the deed for a some property in the game im all like "kool how you gonna do it?" He said he would find the mayor and start talking price. Well this city is more pirate and scoundrel run so the city itself is divided into certain areas where one shouldnt tread. Long story short he gets a name to go buy this place from...and continues to get it wrong and this might be where I turn into super d**k but since he has been ruining my combat blatantly I figure some payback is in order.

So he keeps asking people where to find this guy and some disposition rolls and bad wording ends up getting him lost and he takes it out on me. Proceeds to leave them game. Needless to say I dont play games with him anymore

I just hate the fact that they always wanna shove it in your face every frickin time or gang up on you cuz you're new to it xp and brag about how OP their deck is and that your deck sux sweatdrop My friends did that every time we played and at one point I just quit playing for a long time and now just get back to it again. I dont think ppls should do something like that cuz it make the game not fun. I mean I know my deck might not be the best and may be its sux, but I think I can make it work if I try to understand and enjoy it more.

This is a seriously big problem in tabletop gaming and is one reason why it remains a "nerds only" hobby. There is a pretty large minority of players who want to exclude or belittle other players.

See also: edition warriors who will harass new players that the game they're playing/buying sucks, system mastery goons who insist on bringing overpowered builds to a casual table, etc.

Shameless Cat

Bletch, after a while you either get disgusted with pay to win games or you get addicted. I think I spent way too much money on MTG before I wised up.

system mastery goons who insist on bringing overpowered builds to a casual table, etc.

I counter that by helping my new players build their characters.
My 6 years playing with min maxxers, and kick in the door players taught me how to make such characters.
When I'm DMing new players I ask them... "What kind of character do you want to build?"
And then show them how to do it.

"Ooops, My Bad"
This guy showed up at my shop about 7 months ago. Dark Ascension Game Day. Complains about the small turnout, then complains I don't hand out the mat. Handed the mat to the winner at next FNM to drum up interest for next Game Day. Performs a 180. A month or two later, gets into an argument with my opponent when I'm playing him. After the tournament, performs the 180. Avacyn Restored Game Day. Repeat performance. Complains when I don't hand out the mat because there was no tournament run. Magic 2013 Game Day. Repeat performance. I give him the mat this time at the next FNM.
Two weeks ago, gets into an argument when a player spots him not playing a legal deck at a sanctioned event. That player gets a 1-month tournament ban because he goes and complains to the owner of the shop when I tell him I have no authority to throw a player out of the shop. Last week, tried to claim the RtR clock that came with the RtR League package after I ordered it and wasn't at the shop to claim it. Performed the 180 when he 'realized' I hadn't shown up that day.
Trading with this guy has proved just as difficult. Back with the release of M13, I made it clear to all that I was going to build a Battle of Wits deck for our Extended FNMs. Guy said he had one (M13) and wanted certain cards I had pulled out of my 3 boxes. Responded with "None of those I will trade straight across for a Battle of Wits. Let me see your binders." upon which he pulled a huff and puff and walked away. I mean seriously? you carry like 5 binders in a box which looks heavy and you won't let me look at them? Same situation with a Mycosynth Golem he wanted later. Talked with this to a friend who said "yeah that guy likes to rip people off. He knew he couldn't get away with it with you."
Currently he's trying to advertise a Prerelease done at another location (under our name). Technically I have to 'support' it since the owner of the shop has given his OK on it but I will definitely laugh in his face / throw him out of my tournaments if this blows up in his face as I feel it will.

"You didn't have to embarrass me"
Only met this person once. Watched her play her game when I noticed something. Called the judge over to verify. She was playing a Garruk precon deck (from the Garruk vs Liliana duel deck) in a Standard tournament. During the 2nd round, after I finished my game, she pulled me aside and told me straight that she didn't like what I did. She went on for about 5 minutes after which I responded, "thats proper tournament procedure that all players must follow." and walked away. Funny thing is she had her boyfriend behind her acting like muscle to get her way.

"Where did you get your prices"
I see this guy about once a month. Hillbilly/Hick attitude/demeanor. Always comes into my shop to sell random cards and buy new stuff. Always quoting some ridiculous online sell price from a random online store he saw. Last time I saw him was a few weeks ago. Came in with a few 800ct boxes looking to acquire some M13. I see the owner having a hard time pricing things out so I go over and help (again). He pulls out a card, I name a price. After a while, he goes "man where do you get your prices?" My response "eBay" Him "you should check out [starcitygames] as it is more accurate" Me "If I was selling you stuff, sure, but you're here to sell stuff to a shop so I'm giving our buy prices" 5 minutes after figuring out that he didn't want to sell anything at those "beyond low prices", he calls me over to help him price out stuff with "Oops, I'm sorry" guy in making a trade. That guy verifies all my quotes on eBay before agreeing to a trade.

I've got a few to add to the list.

"The Grudge"

These are the players that you beat in a game God knows how long ago. You have no clue when it was anymore. The other players have no clue when it was anymore. You don't think he has a clue either. But BY GOD HE WILL EXTRACT HIS REVENGE. He will hunt your in game to the furthest reaches of the table, no matter what is going on in the game and he will make you cease to exist.

Even if another player is dominating the table, and you have almost nothing going, he will make you SUFFER right then and there. Even if it makes him lose to the others for wasting precious kill cards on you when you're down and out.

And no matter how many times they catch you in the ribs while you're on the ground they're never sated.

"Why me?"

These ones are interesting. in Magic, the objective of the game is to take your opponent to 0 life or make him deck out. This player gets irritated when you start to attack as soon as you can, or do things to what they have in play. It's a multiplayer game and they're preparing an infinite loop. Before they get all the pieces you obviously take a chunk out. Then they get upset because what you did hampers them.

Isn't that the name of the game, so to speak?

These are the players that will sit there and play cards, but get upset if you do anything to what they have out. They have that 30/30 trampler out that is ready to pound face. You kill it and they get miffy kitty.

As for stories, I had an interesting one. I was at a local Type 1 tournament (no power 9 in the group so it was basically "any card is playable" tourny). Round Robin style play, so only one game to move on. I had a weird G/R deck going on since I was still learning to play and was messing with some cards I found interesting. This would make 7th Edition the newest set at the time.

Anyways, the first game I had to deal with an elf deck. First couple of rounds were pretty basic for me. Got a couple of forests and mountains out and a couple mana generators to get me going. This guy had some pretty interesting stuff going on and he was drawing cards like there was no tomorrow. The whole time he was doing this I was chuckling to myself, which was getting him pretty angry.

I was holding Sudden Impact in my hand, and by now he already had 30 cards in hand.

He kept telling me I was going to lose and to just give up. I told him no as I still had life points so I still had a chance, slim as it may be. Then he was going on about how his combo could let him draw as many cards as he wants and just reached down and grabbed his deck. I forget what combo he had going, but yeah it let him draw all of his deck.

Once he drew I tapped my 4 lands and dropped Sudden Impact on the table.

He dropped his deck and with a shrill holler(And I mean it sounded like a little girl stubbing her toe shrill) of fury tried to jump over the table at me. Good thing the guys at each side of him were fast enough to catch him as he got on the table and pin him down in his chair until he calmed down. I was too shocked at the sudden turn of events to have even twitched.

He was escorted out by the owner a few minutes later. Too bad I lost the next game, I think it really would have tweaked his nose if I would have won.
