I haven't gotten to play either of those unfortunately, though I do keep meaning to check out L5R. o Ao

No mention of Maid RPG or Pokethulhu? Only one mention of Kobolds? For shame.

Sorry Laertes, had to. You understand.

I think the big thing with D&D in terms of forum presence is that most of what happens with the other systems is we talk about experiences, and the experiences with the games are much more limited (thanks to the ubiquitousness of D&D), and there's not nearly as much house ruling/player customization of the other systems.

Which, of course, is ironic because most of the people here who play the other systems are more open to house rules and customizations. Conversely, I suspect they also approach the other games with a different mindset, and see no need to customize a game that's meant for lighthearted fun when they're looking for a game that's lighthearted fun.

I suppose it depends, as I don't think I've ever been in a game without some house ruling - but then it goes that telling stories about those experiences is rather hard, because explaining the system and the setup and bla le bla turns into being a pain in the a** and in the end I just don't share anything.

... maybe I answered my own question.

And I like Maid RPG, at least with a Stewards supplement as I like my mans, thank you. |D I'm not a fan of Pokethulu though.

I could commit the ultimate treason and mention Risus as something that can actually provide an amount of fun, though. :U

Or ******** forbid I mention the horrible side of gaming. Like FATAL.

Yeah, the impression I get is that the vast majority of regular posters here enjoy plenty of other games just as much as, if not more than, D&D. They just don't get talked about a lot because most of them don't have the vast amount of material that D&D does.

Anyway, most of the stuff I like has already been mentioned--Scion, 7th Sea, and Mouse Guard especially. Incidentally, I've also heard that with a little finagling, Maid makes a surprisingly good system to run a Fate/Stay Night game in...

Anyway, two other games I love but never see talked about: Sufficiently Advanced, a very cinematic distant-future RPG inspired by books like Foundation; and A Wanderer's Romance, a wuxia-themed game of exploration and adventure with an extremely easy-to-learn system.

I think that's the case, really. D&D is so crunch oriented and advocates system mastery that it makes talking about it comparable to talking about Magic, for me at least. Other systems, even those crunchier than D&D, just don't seem to come up as often for lack of popularized and recognizable branding.

For the sake of throwing it out there, FATE happens to my system of choice when my group feels like venturing away from d20 based systems.

Well I feel better now, knowing that it's not just a case of WE ONLY LIKE D&D, which sadly is what I've seen in a lot of local game stores that I've been in. orz

I'm running Cyberpunk 2020 tonight, but now I am going to look up A Wanderer's Romance because I'm interested in an easy-to-learn wuxia system.

I play Pathfinder and Dark Heresy. I have also done a oneshot of L5R and I've been trying to get one of the DMs in my group to pull their thumb out of their a** and learn the Fantasy Craft rules.

I can officially say that Cyberpunk 2020 was a bust. Everyone kept rolling pirates and wtf cyberpirates that is not what we signed up to play oh well.

I hear good things about PF but I have no interest in a d20 system right now. D: I don't know what Fantasy Craft is either. o uo

In my opinion, the Maid system works for just about any anime style RPG. Powers aren't overly specifically defined (allowing them to be defined by the world and intended mood), most of the special qualities can be replaced with more world appropriate qualities, and none of them are intrinsic to other pieces of the system (for example, you aren't stopped from playing a gun-weilding Maidcharacter because the Master is banning the cyborg quality).

I haven't done a lot with it outside of Maid, but the one session we did do (think Deadlands) worked out fairly well in terms of system.

D&D is what sells, so it's a simple fact that stores are going to have a lot of it. I enjoy it a lot, but I really do wish I could find more of other systems out there.

Also, if you haven't looked it up yet, A Wanderer's Romance is free on DrivethruRPG. So yeah.

My group was going to try it out at one point, and we all rolled up characters for a futuristic game set in space. Sadly we didn't get beyond character generation.

I'm having issues with that; the site doesn't seem to want to let that work.

Hmm, you're right, it doesn't seem to turn up in a search. I'll see if I can find a direct link to the page, hang on.

Edit: Yeah, looks like it's been removed from the site. Weird.

Anyway, a quick googling tells me that it's still available as a Google Doc.

Does it really truncate like that?

At the end there? I think that's probably intentional, yeah, since this looks to be from before the final release. The formatting's a bit different as well, but it looks like basically everything's in there.

Rats. Well, thanks.
