So, yeah, I recently got Pathfinder, and I'm completely new to Table-Top gaming in general (not new to roleplaying however, I'm a veteran roleplayer at least) so this would essentially be my first table-top game.
Not going to lie, this is the single most difficult, non newbie friendly thing I've had to deal with. The books try to alleviate some of the difficulty but there's only so much they can do (the sheer amount of complexity when it comes down to simple dice rolls is astounding).
I have a few questions, if anyone is willing to answer them.
What's this spell per day stuff?
So yeah, I think the biggest problem with the books is the tables. Mostly because they're seemingly just... There. They aren't given much explanation so you have to figure out what most of the stuff means yourself.
Take the table on the bard class for example. It has a column for level, a column for base attack bonus (a bonus you get at that level?) then some of the modifiers for the various saves... And then it says "Spells per day", and under the first level there's only... One. Does that mean I can only use one spell per day? Wouldn't that essentially make any form of spellcasters the most useless characters around early on? I mean, if I'm only allowed to use magic to heal a friend once that sort of just makes me like a glorified healing potion if I decide to play a cleric.
Class Skills
So, another thing giving me no end of grief is class skills. I'm told I have to roll dice for a certain number of skill points to put into certain skills, and then some skills are "class only" or "require special training", so do class skills mean I have to have at least one skill point in that class? Or are those the only skills I can have? This is something that is INCREDIBLY confusing.
Weapons and hit dice... How in God's name do they work?
So, when you're first starting out, you usually buy yourself a weapon for your adventuring, no biggie right? Well, it gives you certain weapon damages depending on if it's a big, small, or medium weapon. With medium weapons ranging from 1d2 to 2d10, does that mean when I attack I only roll those dice and take only their roll into account? Wouldn't that make every single other stat in the game next to pointless when combat is only affected by what dice you're allowed to use with what weapon? Or are there other factors like, if you have 12 strength you get a +2 to your attack or something like that?
If anyone could help me out with these questions, it would be much appreciated.
