Ends With $153,000 Bill
This was a misssstake.
A San Diego-area man ssssent (OK, we'll stop) KGTV footage of himself lying in a hospital bed after he said he tried to take a selfie with a rattlesnake.
The bill for services rendered to Todd Fassler on July 7 comes to a whopping $153,161.25, as tweeted by KGTV's Dan Haggerty:
As the Washington Post's Wonkblog noted, by far the largest expense listed on the itemized bill is $83,341.25 for "pharmacy." That's because Fassler's treatment depleted the anti-venom supplies at two local hospitals, KGTV reported.
As Wonkblog explained:
There's currently only one commercially available antivenin for treating venomous snakebites in the United States -- CroFab, manufactured by U.K.-based BTG plc. And with a stable market of 7,000 to 8,000 snakebite victims per year and no competitors, business is pretty good.
Attempts to reach Fassler were unsuccessful.
Fassler might have learned of the physical and financial perils of rattlesnake bites from Eric Ferguson.
Last year, a North Carolina hospital charged him $89,227 for anti-venom medicine.
So here's a tip to all those itching to take selfies with wild animals: Don't do it.
