Excerpt:
A 20-year-old college student in Yucaipa, California is protesting the inclusion of four landmark graphic novels in an English class that she took during the recently-finished Spring 2015 semester at Crafton Hills College. According to the Redlands Daily Facts newspaper, Tara Shultz and her parents object to Persepolis, Fun Home, Y: The Last ManVol. 1, and The Sandman Vol. 2: The Doll’s House as “pornography” and “garbage.”

Shultz, who is working towards an Associate of Arts in English at the public community college, signed up for English 250: Fiction because it fulfills one part of her degree requirements. She was apparently aware that the specific focus of the class was graphic novels, but she told the newspaper that “I expected Batman and Robin, not pornography.” Shultz says that Associate Professor Ryan Bartlett, who has taught the course for three terms without any other complaints, failed to adequately warn students about the books’ content. Her father Greg Shultz said that “if they (had) put a disclaimer on this, we wouldn’t have taken the course.” Tara Shultz agreed, saying that Bartlett “should have stood up the first day of class and warned us.”

Of course, Shultz and her parents did have complete information about which books would be covered in the class–the school requires instructors (p. 20) to distribute a detailed syllabus on the first day of the term–and ample time to withdraw with no effect on her grade. Fourteen other courses offered at Crafton Hills fulfill the same degree requirement as English 250. The college’s online calendar shows that the Spring semester began on January 12, and the last date to drop a course with no grade penalty was January 30. Shultz apparently brought up her objections to four out of ten books covered in the class after that date, when her only options were to complete the assigned work or withdraw with a 0.

I've read two out of those four for fun. I don't think they are that extreme especially for a 20 year old.
They had a chance to contest it, but this could be seen as a 'you snooze; you lose' prospect.

Why didn't she withdraw from the class when she could? This girl is stupid and criticizing award-winning (they are award-winning, right?) graphic novels because she finds them to be "garbage" and "pornographic." Guess what, honey? You're 20. Get over it. There are probably a few nerdy people out there younger than her, probably still in high school, who may have already read those novels. GROW UP.

So...she's 20 years old, a legal adult, and her PARENTS are involved in this? I find it funny that the dad said "WE wouldn't have taken the course." PFFT. And I've read Persepolis. I don't recall any PORNOGRAPHY in it. May have been one or two panels of nudity but I can't remember.

While I haven't read any DC comics, I doubt they're anywhere close to being "pure and wholesome," or whatever it was she was expecting.

Case in point:

In The Killing Joke comic, The Joker breaks into Commissioner Gordon's house, shooting Barbara Gordon (Batgirl) and paralyzing her from the waist down. He kidnaps Gordon and tries to "break" him, make him go insane. How? He takes pictures of Barbara naked, crippled, and bleeding, and its implied that he MAY have even raped her. Below is a snipet. Its PG-13 but not pur and wholesome, either. AND its DC Comics. (Batman and Robin)

They're not. I don't believe Batman and Robin has been wholesome since the Adam West television series, and even that wasn't completely wholesome.

That was the graphic novel I was thinking of since I remember hearing about it during the whole Batgirl cover deal a few weeks back.
another moron who thinks nudity and/or sex = porn.

Anyone remember all the sex and violence in Shakespeare, hell I remember seeing in our movie viewing Juliet's 'dirty pillows' and it wasn't the porno. I think there is a commonly issued highschool book with an explicit scene in it.

Yes, they do have sex and violence but that isn't all they are about.

Also this woman is a little behind the curve as far as comics being all shallow, wholesome superhero fluff (fun fluff at times but fluff nonetheless.) Comics have gotten a lot deeper and sometimes are as deep as pure word books.

Quotable Prophet

While I do not in any way deny that Batman and Robin are awesome, they are not the end all be all of graphic novels and do not necessarily make up the whole of how graphic novels are literary achievements and what a class about graphic novels should be.

Honestly, sounds more like she was expecting to take a class where all she'd have to do is read comic books.
