Right but what if someone who isn't the OP says they're going through the whole thread to ignore anyone who disagrees with the OP and isn't like the both of them and they admit they're getting pure pleasure out of doing so? Would that be considered abusing the system?

Of course it is. It doesn't matter whatever feature or tool you use to troll people. If you're trolling, you're breaking the rules (it's a pretty generic/umbrella sort of rule).

I guess some people will never see something like that as abuse of the system and harassment when they and others like them have always been bullied for being who they are. Just because you've (general usage here) had to deal with jerks on the site doesn't make it right for you to be a jerk back to people that you've never talked to just because they simply have an opinion on something. I remember a lot of people saying they were going to block anyone that put on the ally flag. Heck, I've seen some who said they did the same thing because people who were not any letter of the acronym had no reason to have pride in anything and did nothing to deserve being called an ally. Someone recently said in a convo I was a part of that we're being conditioned into being an overly PC society and I'm starting to believe they're very right on that.

I've got eight people on my ignore list: President Diedrich and seven people whose names ring no bells whatsoever. Porn spammers, maybe. I don't ignore-list people I dislike; I ignore them the old fashioned way by not reading their threads/posts.

That said, I love having the option, and I think it's impossible to abuse the feature. It's provided for Gaians to use as they see fit, to increase their enjoyment of the site. If they need to block people who have racy avatars, or obnoxious signatures, or ignorant opinions...well, those uses are every bit as valid as blocking porn spammers. Even if I don't agree that my avatar is too racy, or my sig too obnoxious, or my opinions too ignorant, so what? Everybody gets to draw their own lines. I also don't think stating that you're going to be ignoring people counts as abuse. Maybe if you specifically singled out an individual? Maybe. But saying you've found a bunch of people you need to block is much the same as remarking that there's a lot of jerks in a thread. Just doesn't seem like trolling to me.

(Regarding the SF thread: If the person ignoring everyone is making info threads, then they shouldn't get much discussion with so many people blocked; a competing thread should be able to thrive. Failing that, simply logging out lets you see the thread. So I'm not seeing a special circumstance that requires a change to the ignore feature.)

I usually just block the generally annoying accounts such as trolls, scammers or picture/nonsense spammers.

But recently I noticed that my patience when it comes to (warning, the following description is not PC) bigoted special snowflake teenagers wears thinner a lot quicker than some years ago.
So now, I'll just block the people who keep shouting their social justice warrior / tumblr propaganda all day long.

Once, I was actually tempted to create a thread and ask questions such as "do you agree that white people can't experience racism?", "do you identify as otherkin?", "Do you believe your eyes change colour depending on your mood?" etc. and simply insta-block everyone who agreed with those questions to avoid running into those kinds of people in the future. xd I didn't end up doing so, but the "cishet hate" that was going on during the pride flag scandal helped me fill up my ignore list with a lot of hateful hypocrites.

I don't consider this an "abuse" of the system at all since I should be free to ignore whoever I want for whatever reason I see fit. I am here for FUN only. If I have to roll my eyes at half of the posts someone makes, why waste time even letting their threads show? I don't check thread creator usernames before I enter a thread and I don't memorize usernames anyway. I save a lot of time by simply blocking people who constantly post stuff that makes me cringe.

Just checked my ignore list and there's 3 people on there!! I was expected 0 since I forgot that system even existed. I have no idea what those people did end up on my list but it must've been super duper bad because I went out of my way to find the ignore button hahaha

It's interesting thinking about the thing in perspective of abusing it tho. I could see it as a form of harassment itself as I have seen people just publicly post "hahaha youre blocked!!!" and then harass that person. its really petty and usually makes things even worse. But then again, the ignore system is really up to the user. If the person really thinks ignoring people because of differing opinions is how the system is supposed to be used, I guess you can't do much else but say huh. :|c I could never imagine myself doing that but I'm someone that doesn't really get into heated arguments or conflicts like that so I guess it's harder to imagine that sort of situation

I will put anyone who is rude and ignorant on my list. There hasn't been that much yet, but some of the major twats in GCD are on there. I'm an occasional thread maker, I know that ignoring these people will make them not see my threads, and I'm happy about the fact they don't have a place for their useless opinion in my threads

Sometimes I keep them off ignore list for a while before actually ignoring them so I can watch them do stupid s**t again and laugh. It's pretty fun smile

I don't ignore anyone. I tried ignoring diedrich when he was spamming threads but that didn't work, so there's no point keeping him there lol. if I see someone I don't like I just skip past their posts, but sometimes they'll say something I'll agree with. I don't have any trouble with them so I don't see why I need to add them to ignore.

however if I did run into someone troublesome I'm still not sure if I would add them to ignore. if they found out I did I feel like they'd try to make fun of me for that, and that would annoy the hell out of me stressed so keeping them off ignore and managing to tolerate seeing them would somehow make me feel like the better person? I have no idea why. I'm petty lol.

*I have only used the ignore system three times. Once for a user that was starting to get really really creepy, the other two are a couple I know in the real world that were saying some really harassing things, and I really do not have time for that kind of negativity in my life.

*Too far for me are the things listed above. You start posting negative things/lies about me or my friends, sending me PMs with harassing messages or sending me gifts/messages when I am not interested (nor ever will be) in you, you are going on the list. I am generally a very loving and understanding person, but those things REALLY cross by boundaries.

*It is important to me so that way I do not have to worry about seeing them ever again. Granted there can be mules, but I have changed my name so many times through the years that I don't think that would be a problem.

*You will make enemies throughout your life, it's a known fact. Online is no different. Some people will not see eye to eye with you and will try to cut you down because of it. It's all in how you handle it.

This is a fairly relevant topic with all the spam in GCD right now, ha.

In all seriousness I don't use the feature very often. Even trolls can be amusing. I like to see what other people have to say, even if it's from someone I don't particularly like. I'm lurking about 95% of the time on these forums anyways so I'm merely a passive observer to everything, but if I am being harassed and/or stalked I will ignore them.

I do remember putting a few people on ignore when I was trying to get that achievement for having a thread go unnoticed in the CB for 24 hours and the same people kept posting in it. Forget which ones they were so now I cannot remove them, alas.

I was thinking the same thing! Funny how right after this topic, I have to use my ignore list for the first time in forever xD I'm glad those threads were taken care of, though. Yay mods! i would have reported it but the captchas were impossible to read

... I never really thought of doing that to get that achievement. Huh. xP But I don't know anyone in CB anyway so it'd be hard to block, but man that achievement just invites harrassment really.

I've never used the ignore feature.
Idk if I've ever been ignored, but I haven't noticed if I have.
One thing I've become paranoid about since I started posting more in GCD instead of just lurking, is getting ignored and not being able to see an update thread.
So I try to keep to myself and just give general feedback, or just not post at all.
I think this is because I've seen people bluntly state they've put people on ignore for their opinions, and then they've gone onto making information threads.
Another thing is I don't think I'd realise I was ignored until I did something silly, like post in the previous days thread or something asking 'where's todays thread? o.O ' and being told it was right there on the first page.

Related to the discussion over the last few pages, you are free to use your ignorelist as you deem necessary. It is your ignorelist and you can put whoever you want there. That said, there are ways that you can use it that can cause you to violate the ToS.

For instance, if you are in a contract with another user, such as for an art commission or some other agreement that involves an exchange of gold/items/services for gold/items/services, you should be working something out with that user to end or cancel the transaction before adding them to your ignorelist. Simply adding them to your ignorelist before the transaction is complete, or cancelling it on your own without a mutual agreement from the other user, can land you in hot water for scamming.

I cleared my ignorelist when I became a moderator in 2009 and I have only had to add three people to my list since then, one being someone that was spreading false information to her roommates (my offline friends) to tear relationships and friendships apart. I have pretty thick skin and I try to leave people off of my ignorelist so that my inbox remains open to everyone, especially since I am one of two people currently working on hacking reports. Unfortunately, there are just some people who behave in such a manner that adding them to my ignorelist was the best option I had.

This is actually a large reason as to why I stopped making info threads in the GCD. I haven't had to use it in a while, but my list is quite large and includes some GCD regulars. So I stopped making threads because it just isn't fair.

On the other hand, I've had a user on my ignore list go on and become a mod, effectively bypassing the feature. At that moment, I figured Gaia's screening process must be lax as s**t if they let that dummy through lol

I guess people on Gaia are very chill and there are not a lot of problems user to user like there are on other sites. I havent blocked anyone...in a loooong loooong time. Usually if I'm in an internet argument with someone I'll just stop going to the thread and leave it alone. On other websites I'll block people who send me spam messages, which on Gaia I fear getting the message notification because usually its from a moderator (thanking me for reporting a thread 6 months ago). GCD and SF have a great set of people in it that don't generally bother me.

I'm not too sure moderators should have the ability to block people, simply on the basis that it's hindering their job. I mean you literally can't see them breaking the rules...Or maybe it's a good thing that you dont handle the case if you already had a bias towards that person??

I've only used the ignore system a few times. Mostly for those who will not stop asking me for items. An example is a user who kept threatening to kill themselves if I did not give them my Angelic Halo because "It's the only thing I've ever wanted in my life". *shiver*

I haven't made any enemies that I know of. I'm a pretty easy person to get along with, overall, even if someone disagrees me. I always try to come to a middle ground that we can both agree on.

As for abusing the system, I believe that a users should not go around blocking everyone who does not agree with them. Life is not full of people who agree with you and there will always be conflict. Plus, the user will possibly be missing out on relevant topics by some of the other users who they have blocked. But if that is what the users wants to do, let them do it. Can't control it.

How often do you use the ignore system?
Not a lot, but past drama has made me block quite a number of users before.

How far is "too far" in order for you to block someone?
Generally when they're being offensive asshats and don't give a damn. I can understand if they're ignorant and don't understand what they're talking about since not everyone knows everything, but even when they're told and decide to continue on with specific beliefs and be jerks, I decide that its time to never see them again. Once a user on here convinces me that they're not worth interacting with, I don't want to keep those avenues up.

Is the ignore system important or unimportant to you?
I think its important. I come onto this site to have fun with friends and to read interesting topics. If someone is going out of their way to disrupt that, they're simply put on the list. If I can walk away from people I don't like irl, I should be able to do that here, too.

Making enemies... is it a good thing or a bad thing?
Bad, of course. I don't intend to start drama, but sometimes I feel the need to speak up when someone's wrong about something, and sometimes I can get a little mild if they say terrible things. Y'know, just like everyone else when their buttons are pushed. Otherwise, I'm on my best behavior and try to avoid it.

I don't use my ignore button that often, but when I do... It's for good reason.
You guys know me, I'm pretty chill and forgiving. Hell, I'll hesitate to add someone to my ignore list only because while they are rude, they're funny.

I've got 3 people on my ignore list. One for being sexist blaming rape on girls looking like sluts, one for using casually using slurs, and the other for just complaining that "items look like ******** s**t" every single goddamn day without adding anything constructive or meaningful. (That last one is more like me hitting "mute" instead of being offended.)

I really have no idea how people have or end up on such a huge number of ignores. I'm mean I get that they're most likely from the "controversial" threads that come up. But I get pretty opinionated in those and haven't ended up anyone's ignore lists as far as I know of. And I'm one of those dirty tumblr users that like 50% of the GCD hates for some reason. lol
