It's been three thousand years since the world burned and the air turned to poison, killing any and all who breath in the harmful substance of war long gone. Three thousand years since the human race had to face the fact they were not alone on their very own planet. The survivors of the last great war went to ground, the only place left for them, only to find they were not alone. Elves, Dwarves and many other manner of humanoid life lived in the places where the sky was foreign... where dirt and rock ruled life. Here they learned air was the most precious of all resources, taken for granted above the surface, but not down there.
nearly five hundred years passed in the large underground cities ruled jointly by the Dwarves and Dark Elves, where humans were hardly more than slaves to those who let them into their magnificent cities. And during this time, thought of living on the surface faded from the humans minds, but the Elves and Dwarves had plans. They knew the air was poisoned beyond repair, but they had their own ways of making, and with the surface devoid of human life, why not take it for themselves and feel the sun upon their skin?
Twenty-five hundred years went by, where living underground was forgotten by all, and the surface civilization thrived beyond compare. Huge, beautiful cities were constructed for the prosperous Elves and Dwarves. The entirety of these cities were encased in transparent solar panelled glass, as an endless source of energy as well as to keep the preciously crafted, clean and crisp air from escaping into the toxic atmosphere. Only the richest actually lived in these cities, the rich were almost exclusively those who owned or were heirs upon heirs to the massive undersurface facilities that turned the toxic atmosphere into breathable air.
Outside these safehaven cities of the rich and powerful, lived the rest of all the races, in shack cities that pushed up against the barriers of the rich, but never able to pass into their domes. The poor and desolate who were forced to live day to day, trying to make enough money to purchase their air from vendors. It's from these poor souls the Rebels rose. Originally a force of farmer and tradesmen trying to make a difference in the world. Now they were a force to be reckoned with, with an army of soldiers and spies, hidden throughout the wastelands, trying without rest to bring a better life to all, not to the few.
Unfortunately, originally sprouting from the Rebels a group emerged, long since now known as the Terrorist organization Sjenki. They didn't want air.. the very essence of life for everyone, no, they wanted to control it. Kill those who hoarded it now and keep it for themselves. Become those in power, gain the ability to do what they wish whenever they wish, and destroy all those who oppose them. For the past one hundred years this group has been known, gradually escalating their attacks on the cities, and even the outlaying wasteland settlements in their bid for power.
But something else was now facing this world, something never seen before in any time of the planet. Those who the toxic air does not kill, but rather alter. Many of these people, these people who breath the toxic air but do not die, simply become deformed and disfigured, forced to live in pain every second of every day until they perish. But few, very few of these people change in ways unimaginable. Their very DNA is altered when the toxins are introduced to their bodies. They don't deform and degrade like the rest, they become superior. Strange and wonderful abilities come to these individuals, abilities unexplainable, but feared by all. It is these people, who are feared even more than the Rebels and Terrorists, that this world now fears.
