Sophonisba

Sophie raised an eyebrow at the Lord who had come forward to stand with Lady Dormer. "How interesting that the Lady Dormer, who brought forth the accusation, isn't the one to defend it. One would think you fear your slander won't hold it's weight, and wish to already distance yourself from it." She saw Dormer's face colour slightly and knew she'd hit the mark.

The crowd of nobles had drawn in around them, and now the delicate dance of court politics revealed itself in more ways than one. Those who backed the Dormers, or opposed the house Astarte, slowly drifted until they stood near or behind her. The nobility that backed the Astarte House wandered to collect by Sophie. All were careful to make their movements seem unrelated to the show-down. A good many had simply stayed in the middle. The Dormers were one of the Middle Houses, but on the rise of late, and although the Astarte were one of the last High Houses, there hadn't been an Astarte at court for many years. Diplomats and envoys, to be sure, but none with the blood or the heritage to really merit any influence in the day-to-day court workings.

Sophie sensed that this was to be one of her first trials in the game of the imperial politics. It would have to be decisive and she'd need to prove both strength and subtlety. It was a simple exercise from her mother's lessons. First, isolate the enemy.

Turning to ignore the Lady Dormer, who was clearly working herself into a fit, Sophie addressed the Lord who had come forward. "I find it curious that you think it so odd that a handmaiden would wander the gardens past curfew, since you have been seen escorting your wife's personal priestess across them every night this past week. What a devout man you are, to ensure she is accompanied in the night air. Perhaps my dear Alexandra was simply on a similar innocent mission, Lord Gespar, and was seeing a friend back to her quarters." Lord Gespar reddened, and looked uncertainly back towards Lady Dormer. He mumbled softly, and stepped back.

As the Lord stepped back to hurriedly excuse himself to Lady Dormer before striding rapidly away, no doubt in an attempt to reach his lady wife before rumors of what he did with her priestess reached her ears, Sophie stepped closer to her handmaiden. "Are you quite alright dear?" Without waiting for an answer, she went on, whispering quick and urgent. "You may have to spend a teensy bit of time in the dungeon, but if she insists on a hearing, she'll get one. It's been too long since these nobles have seen the old blood of the realm exercise it's privilege."

Sophie gave the girl one last encouraging smile, and then glanced at the guard standing a little behind her. In the soft dawn light, she recognized the captain of the guard. 'Why," she wondered, 'is the captain not revealing Alex's part in the fight? Why is she hiding the fight completely?' Clearly, Alex had done something. Perhaps Alex was more capable than she let on already, despite the lack of training. Sophie would have to arrange a private meeting with this captain, and make inquires as to how she'd been appointed.

Lady Dormer would still have to be dealt with first, however. Sophie faced her, posture regal. "Lady Dormer, you have brought forth an accusation of theft of the crown jewels before one of my ladies-in-waiting. This is a serious charge, theft of imperial property this valuable is considered treason. A magistrate of the heralds should be summoned at once, and they shall oversee the trial you've demanded." She turned to face a rather plain-faced and slouched young lord. "Lord Quincy, would you be a peach and notify Magistrate Sey Tren that her services will be needed this afternoon?" Quincy, dazzled by the unexpected attention of the radiant duchess-in-waiting, bobbed his head once and ran off to comply. Magistrate Sey Tren was an elven judge who maintained a sterling reputation of being completely incorruptible. Sophie knew her mother's agent's had approached her before, but the woman was too in love with the complicated laws of the empire. Luckily, that could work just as well to Sophie's advantage.

"In the meantime, as is proper for such an accusation, the Lady Alexandra of House Tinel will wait for her trail in the dungeons. Does this meet your satisfaction, Lady Dormer?" This should properly bait Lady Dormer. The b***h would jump at the chance to embarrass Alex by having her kept in the dungeons.

As Sophie waited for the Lady's reply, wondering if she'd press the accusation as Sophie hoped, she noted that now only a few lonely elite remained tactility supporting the Lady Dormer, and the rest now had positioned themselves closer to her. Hopefully, Sophie would be able to snag those last few supporters by exercising the raw political power of a peer of the empress in court.

Lady Dormer gave a tight smile through her crocodile tears, "Oh Sophie...you do seem to know how to touch someone's heart." The woman swept herself up from her sitting position, and wiped her wet cheeks with the back of her hand.
'What a touching display of affection for your new-found handmaiden...'Tis a wonder though..." Lady Dormer put a finger to her chin, a face that was seemingly deep in thought. "Alexandra would have never committed such a deed in my care...'Tis interesting to note that on her first day with you she would already be causing such trouble."
Lady Dormer turned away just then, shrugging her shoulders and then simpering with pursed lips. A few of the nobles murmured, and followed after her as she began to take her leave...

Alex could feel the tears brimming in her eyes as she looked at the Captain and Sophie. Her eyes begging for help that would not come as the guards began to pull her away after Lady Dormer.

---------------------------

The Following Morning...

---------------------------

Alexandra's ankle was bleeding now as it kept rubbing against the cold iron shackle. She kept herself huddled against the corner, purposely ignoring the comfortable chair that was laid out for her by the guard.
She had been in the dungeon for one day, and not a single person had come to visit her. At first she had been terrified, mostly listening hard for the executioner to make his way down and say that she was to be beheaded. Now she was simply depressed. Depressed at the idea that they had just left her down there and forgotten her. The actions of Lady Dormer had created a tear in her heart that was not there before. Never in her life had someone treated her that way, or accused her of such a crime.
"Someone will pay." she whispered, clenching her fists and putting her head down on her knees.

Rowan spent the night in silence, she didn't want to draw any unwarranted attention to the pair travelling. Most of the time she contemplated going back home after leaving so abruptly, and especially after fighting with her teacher over the nature of her "discovery". She still hurt thinking about it. Eventually the sun began to rise and she took a look at her arm in the thin sunlight as they dismounted and headed into the woods. The strange scales were hard, but flexible, none of her joints were limited in the slightest. She carefully pulled one of the golden claws across her opposite palm to test the sharpness, it slid through the skin as if it were warm butter. The blood on her palm was still crimson and appeared human in nature. She pondered this, it all felt so distant for the time being, as if it were not her arm, but someone else's, not her curse, not her problem.

She glanced up as her travelling companion approached and struck up a conversation. She listened with bags under her eyes and a dull look to her eyes, but as a trained mage she absorbed the information and would be able to recall it later. She was well versed in listening to lectures.

"You did mention I could call you G, I just did not respond at the time. I was rather anxious. I am sure you can understand. You can call me Rowan. We're getting close, over this way," Rowan pointed off the trail and into the woods before setting off in the new direction but didn't respond otherwise to the topic at hand. She was too tired. If she didn't rest soon she would have to cast something to draw energy from a natural source, and the more she did that the bigger the toll would be to pay later when it ran out. She found her way to the small creek and peered down the little gully it splashed into. "This is the entrance, I am not aware of any other way down, but I should be able to keep us dry and undamaged." the young mage gestured with her good arm and directed her words and her will at their clothes, "Aquam repellunt. Our clothes should keep us above the water for a short period, follow me."

She ducked into the opening and allowed her body to float down the stream until she dropped out of the waterfall. Her boots caught her on the water and she quickly dashed to the sandy shore.

"This way, quickly, the spell is not long term!" She warned G, her voice echoed around the small cave as she turned to see if he had trusted her and followed along.

A heavy, over dramatic sigh. "Why do nobles insist on this game of pretty insults? Give them each a sword. It would be over faster and be more fun to watch."

Lucia rolled her eyes at the silky, but unwanted, voice in her head. She clacked her way across the front courtyard of the castle with a plate of steaming breakfast in hand, ignoring the tour group that was making their way to the main hall. Having just come from a meeting with a Queen, merely reporting the events of the week and to confirm the crown had, in fact, been stolen, the captain was dressed in full armor for appearances. She didn't particularly enjoy being covered in the dark grey metal, though she felt oddly...comfortable being in it, but she found no point wearing it in the castle.

Lucia nodded to the guards for them to open the door to the prison and headed down the stairs. The shouts of the prisoners echoed up the spiral staircase and the smell of rot built up with it as she descended, her expression getting worse with each step. She power walked through the facility to the section they had set aside specifically for people of more importance and better blood. It was still a prison, but at least the floor wasn't covered in waste and blood. Peering into the cell, she saw Alexandra in the corner and a plate of gruel pushed under the bars by the trainee on duty for the morning. She unlocked the cell with her own key, having finally found it under her dresser in her room, and approached Alexandra. Kneeling down, she held the plate out. "This should taste better than the food they gave you."

Gereth floated down the river with a strange sense of calm, he didn't feel the wet or the cold of the river, it was almost like floating on air. The waterfall was a bit different, having the sensation of floating suddenly being replaced with falling. He landed on the water's surface and walked to the bank, the cave was surprisingly well lit for not having any torches or candles. Sunlight was streaming in through small holes in the ceiling, between roots, and through cracks in the earthen roof. There was an open doorway on the far side of the chamber, that was why they were here. Gereth walked across the cave and through the doorway, the chamber on the other side was surprisingly barren; just a pedestal in the center, and an ornate wall-shaped statue on the far side of the room. The pedestal was likely where the egg had rested, until Rowan had removed it. But it was the wall that interested Gereth. The room was large, very large; two adult dragons probably could have fit inside and still had room to move. Gereth reached the wall statue and sat down, he removed the black book from his bag along with several sheets of paper with his signature short-hand writing on them. Then he took a quill, a small bottle of ink, and a blank piece of parchment; and began to translate the wall. "When we saw that our kind was doomed to be banished from this plane, we hid our yet unborn children, that they may awaken... that's odd. It doesn't continue, it's just a fragment of the whole truth. There must be others hidden in places that no one has yet found. That is frustrating indeed, these walls must contain history from the age of dragons, from the dragon's perspective. The value of this knowledge could be infinite, but it looks like we'll have to find others before we can learn what really happened. Or how to remove the dragon aspect from you." Gereth kept his voice calm, but in reality he was incredibly irritated at the fact that this place didn't have what he had wanted.

Rowan followed G I tot he shrine area, she had seen it before, but the skeletons of the dragons had vanished. She made no comment, but with their giant bones out of the way the pair could actually view the back of the cavernous room and the writing that was etched there. G went ahead and started to translate, but Rowan poked around the room a bit before making her way to his side. As he sat there seeming rather miffed, she found herself drawn to one section of the wall, one of the draconian words seemed to glow and the rest of her vision dimmed as she approached it and reached out her clawed arm. Pale blue light streamed from around it and she felt the word speak itself though whether it was heard aloud or simply in her mind she was not certain. The scales on her arm creeped up her neck and began to form along the edge of her cheek and under her left eye, her vision did not return but rather she saw the capital again, besieged by dragons of all sorts, some fighting each other even, humans and other magical beings fought one another as well. Then she felt a falling sensation as she dropped deep below the earth, past the cells of the dungeon and further into the catacombs. There was another shrine, with the largest dragon one could imagine resting below.

When Her eyesight returned and she found herself on the ground and her face felt odd, she scratched at the scales and forced back the tears the feeling brought, her "condition" was worsening and would be even harder to hide now. She looked to see where G was, "I know where another shrine is. But...my face..." she choked on the words and placed her hand on her cheek. She was so exhausted now she simply could not handle the progressing transformation.

Alex peered up when the iron door creaked open and flooded the dungeon room with light. She blinked rapidly as she squinted, her eyes adjusting to the sudden change from darkness. When she saw who it was, she relaxed, yet laid her head back down on her knees stubbornly.
"Just leave it." she answered stoically, her eyes staring blankly at the ground between her legs. "I know I will be dead soon anyway."

Gereth turned when he heard something hit the ground behind him. It turned out that the something was Rowen, Gereth watched as the lilac scales spread up her neck and onto her face. When she opened her eyes again and spoke, he could tell she was at her limit. Gereth began packing his papers back into his bag. "Feeling sad is natural, especially when what one considers normal is taken away from them. But crying is a pointless waste of energy. If a problem has a solution, then it will be solved. If a problem does not have a solution, then it will not be solved. Regardless of what kind of problem it is, crying won't do anything, you have to find the will to act." Gereth finished packing his things and stood up. "We should find a way out of here."

Artemis was finishing his session with a white mage. His rib was finally back where it was supposed to be and attached firmly. "Thanks, here's what we agreed on." Artemis handed a small bag of coins to the man in the white robe, who accepted it, bowed, and left without any questions.

Lucia set the plate down gently and pushed it a little closer to her. "You are not going to die, I can guarantee it. I will be testifying for you during the trial and Lady Dormer has no solid proof. Besides, I doubt Lady Sophonisba will let you be executed after defending you yesterday." She wasn't sure if her words would help at all, never having been a very good advice giver, and with a heavy metallic thud, she sat down. Perhaps...some small talk would be good? The cell they had put Alexandra in wasn't exactly terrible, but it was dark and for someone who, she assumed, was used to luxurious beds and scented candles every night, it was no surprise the girl would feel down. "I was surprised to find you working here, as a handmaiden even, but now I feel bad that you had to work for Lady Dormer."

Ranimadrix wiped his brow, having finished repairing the fields. They almost seemed to be in better condition than before, though his father did always say he had a green thumb, as much as he hated that pun. In his work, he had lost track of the time, noticing just now that the sun was beginning to set. As he sat down at the end of the field, admiring his work, he heard a leathery flap from behind him. At first, a wave of fear washed over him, but quickly subsided as he heard a man's voice.

"Impressive. I knew our blood was strong in you, but I didn't think a half-breed could be such a natural."
Ranimadrix turned, seeing his guest as a great green dragon. He couldn't have been less than twelve times the half-dragon's size. He turned back to his work, giving a heavy sigh. "What are you doing here, grandfather?"

The dragon chuckled at his grandson's disrespect. "Why do you choose to stay here? At the request of your mother, I've been watching over you today. Why do you delude yourself into thinking that you'll ever be accepted by these weak fools? You've no doubt been feeling your dragon heritage calling out to you. Your choices today even prove it." The dragon explained, approaching his grandson, laying at his side. "You chose to hunt for your own food, refusing to consume food that you didn't earn. You enjoy pushing your body's physical limits. You even skillfully repaired this land, leaving it in a better state than it was before. Do you think these skills came from your worthless human father?" Ranimadrix could feel his rage growing, but he dare not raise his hand before his grandfather. "These are aspects of our kind. You should come with me. We can teach you to control the great power sealed in your blood." As the great dragon looked to his grandchild, he noticed how tense he seemed. "You'll never learn to control your draconic powers by living among these mortals. You no doubt still hate me for killing your father. Mortals must know their place when dealing with us. We cannot let them think that they hold any sway over our actions, and we must punish them for thinking that they can demand anything of us. Aside from that, I hoped that by severing your ties with him, you'd feel compelled to come to us. You could be so much more than a mere farmer."

As much as he hated to admit it, Ranimadrix could feel that the words held truth. This realization revealed that for once, he did truly feel alone. He gripped his knees tightly. "I--I don't know..." It was all that managed to squeak out. As calm as he seemed, he just felt a maelstrom of doubt in his mind. The great dragon sighed, leaning closer. "That is unfortunate to hear. You show much potential. Remember, young one; The blood of the great Ranidacus flows through your veins. It would be a shame to see my father's noble blood wasted on a life so mundane." The dragon stood up, spreading his wings. "If you change your mind, you know where you can find me."

With a mighty flap of his wings, the elder green dragon took off, leaving a rush of air in his wake. Ranimadrix raised his arm to shield his eyes from any loose dust. And then he was gone, leaving the half-dragon alone once more. In a way, he was relieved. His grandfather was convinced that his father had died. Turon was safe for now. But the words of his grandfather weighed heavily on his mind. He still wanted revenge. He still wanted to slay his dragon relatives. But for the first time in his life, someone was reaching out to help him find who he was. Did he really have the strength to turn away from that? He scratched at the sides of his head. "Grrrrraagh! What is wrong with me?!" He stood up, retrieving his hoe. He looked off into the forest behind him. He now knew that the answers to the questions that plagued his mind were in there. They'd be deep within the forest, and the trek would be dangerous, but the answers would be there, waiting on the other side. He returned to the cottage, gathering another roll of bandages. He entered his Turon's room.

"Rani...? What's wrong?" His father asked him as he entered, sitting up. "Nothing, father. Please, it's time to change your bandages." The farmer still looked concerned, but complied. Ranimadrix wasn't nearly as skilled at tying bandages as Odeir, so the ones he'd applied earlier slid off quite easily. Throughout the whole ordeal, the dragon child seemed distracted. Like he was simply going through the motions of tying the bandages. When he finished, Turon returned to his bed, as Ranimadrix took a seat at a chair near the bedside. The two sat in silence for what felt like hours, Turon waiting for his son to speak, and Ranimadrix trying to think of words to say. Suddenly, the silence was broken. "Grandfather visited today." Ranimadrix said.

Turon's voice didn't change from the caring tone he always took. "What did he say?" The half-dragon was surprised by his father's patience on the subject. "He... he said that I would make... a great dragon.... And that he wants me to live with them, so they can train me. He... he thinks you died from your injuries." Ranimadrix struggled with his words. "Father, what should I do? I... I want to go and get answers about who I am, but--" He was cut off by his father suddenly pulling him into a hug. "Rani, you're the greatest son I could have ever asked for. If you wish to stay here, that's fine. If you choose to go with Ranidydek, I will wish you luck. As abrasive as your grandfather is, he does still care for his children."

Ranimadrix looked to his father. "How are you content with this? He tried to kill you." Turon laid back in his bed, and sighed. "Before you had come and seen him attack me, we talked. At first, I thought it would be that nonsense about dragon supremacy, and upholding their superiority, but he assured me that when I passed on, he would offer you a home." The farmer smiled. "It touched me, really. He shows concern for you, because you share his blood. He acknowledges you as his family. Even if I don't agree with what he does, I can't hate him for showing compassion for you." Ranimadrix smiled at his father's words. "You know, father, sometimes I think you might be too nice."

The farmer laughed. "Well, I am getting on in years. I don't see much of a point in resenting anyone when I doubt I'll be alive long enough to do anything about it." The half-dragon was relieved by his words. "Thank you, father." Ranimadrix then got up from the chair, and left the room, crossing the hall, and going into his room. He slowly removed his clothes, looking at his full, naked body in his cracked mirror. As he looked over the form of the bipedal lizard creature that stared back at him, he still pondered the options open to him. He still felt that he needed revenge on his grandfather, but with their meeting earlier, there was a road open to him to figure out just what he was. As he lay in his cool bed, he slowly drifted off to sleep.

The following few days were fairly uneventful, as Ranimadrix spent his time caring for his father, and tending to the fields, each day, his mind growing increasingly more distant. He still encountered the occasional draconic urge, but he was thankful that he wasn't visited by any more of his relatives. That was not an encounter he wished to deal with at this time. Finally, his father's wounds had recovered, leaving the man with a few scars. As the two gathered in the kitchen of their cottage, Ranimadrix sat his father down.

"Father... I've been thinking the last couple days..." The dragon child began "And... I'm leaving. I need to find out who I am, and I'm sad to say that that isn't something I can find here." Turon seemed confused by his son's words. "I've... I met someone in Capitol that said he'd try to get me into training at the castle. If I do, I could become a knight! But..." He said, his expression darkening. "If that doesn't work out, know that I may go and learn about my draconic heritage from grandfather."

Turon smiled, embracing his son. "Do whatever you need to to find your way. Just know that this home will always have a place for you." Pleased with his father's words, Ranimadrix returned his father's hug, and donned his cloak, setting out for Capitol once more.

Rowan pulled herself up into a sitting position. "Find the will to act, hmph, far more easily said than done." she muttered, all the same she was embarrassed for looking so weak in front of essentially a stranger. There was no guarantee he would not try to take advantage of her somehow. She had no one else to turn to of course, so there was little choice.

"I...am not aware of a convenient exit truth be told. When last I was here I collapsed, much like now, and awoke back on the surface with the orb that had been resting on that pedestal." She stood up and wiped her eyes, which stung from being open for so long. She sniffled and looked about the area, and at the distance of the far off root strewn ceiling. Even if she had been full strength she doubted she would be able to lift both of them up and somehow through the barrier there. She hummed to herself and focused on finding a solution for the present problem rather than the one that was on her mind. She placed a claw on the wall and searched for some sort of hidden stair or a rune that would transport them elsewhere through magical means. It was then that a voice from up above caught her attention. It was soft, but distinct, and she could tell someone was casting very familiar magic. Tracer spells to be exact, they had probably tripped an alarm rune the mage above had set somewhere along the trail. Rowan's face went through several emotions in rapid succession, a variety of shock and disgust as she figured out who was looking around in the forest above. Finally she settled into a solid grimace, with her fists clenched at her side, she pulled a cloth scarf from within the folds of her robe, wrapped it about her face and pulled up her hood. She wrapped her arm and hand in cloth bandages and tucked the remainder back into her clothing. She waved G over to her before she called out.

"We are down here! We were caught in a cave in of sorts! Can you help us?"

"Oh! Trapped travelers? Is that what set them off? Yes I can help you! About how far down are you? Give me the distance and I can cast a teleportation! Came the muffled reply. It seemed he hadn't recognized her by voice, not yet anyway.

"We are approximately two towers below you, directly." She shouted back before speaking softly to G, "If you would be so kind, please hide my identity and all our ... activities ... from this man. He means well but ... trust me this will be simpler..."

In the next moment they were standing on the surface before a man with knotwork tattoos up one arm and a sword strapped to his back. His tunic and pants were otherwise plain and unadorned, much like Rowan's robes. His hair and goatee appeared to be naturally and flamboyantly orange.

"There you are! How did you come to be trapped so far below the surface? Are you from about this area? Are you well lass? Your arm appears injured, I am a skilled mage, I could likely repair that for you if you should like." Rowan held her wrapped up arm closer to her chest and pulled the scarf up about her face more. She also did not respond in the slightest. G would have to work their way out of this one.

Gereth was wondering what Rowen was yelling about, turns out she was shouting to someone up above them. Break it down: Rowen clearly knows whoever is going to get us out of here, but she doesn't want to reveal herself or what we were doing down here. He may be someone she used to admire, or at least respect. In all likelihood, she probably trusted him with something personal and something happened that made her feel betrayed. It could have been something relating to the dragon aspect, the shrine, or a more... personal matter. Regardless I should respect her wishes, I'm not as good of a liar as Artemis but I don't think anyone has a tongue as silver as his. I just hope whoever this mage is, he's not particularly adept; if he picks up on my... I may have to kill him or run if he does.

Then the teleportation spell happened, and Gereth saw who had gotten them out of the hole in the ground. Rowen seemed to freeze up, so it was down to Gereth to tell a few half-truths and get them back on track.

Gereth took a second to analyze what he could about the man who stood before them.Break him down: He's proficiant enough with magic to cast a teleportation spell without a direct line of sight. That makes him a fairly advanced mage, if I'm remembering magic complexity correctly. He carries a sword, which likely means he knows how to use it in a fight. A spellsword is a difficult man to fight or flee from, I'll have to convince him we're harmless, and try to keep this short; the longer I'm near him, the longer he has to figure me out.

Gereth, who normally looked completely unfeeling and without emotion, put on a convincing smile and a positive tone in his voice. "I'm very glad you came along when you did! My sister and I were traveling through these mountains on our way to the Capital, to visit some of our relatives, when we fell into that cave. You really don't need to worry about her arm, it's not so much an injury as much as an embarrassment. You see, she was trying to pick some berries and reached through a patch of poison ivy. It'll heal in no time, don't worry about it. Ah, but where are my manners, I'm Gerald, and this is my sister Rose, she's usually rather shy. I'd enjoy chatting with you for a while, but I'm afraid our little trip into the hole has taken up more time than I thought. Thank you again for helping us, we really should be going." Hopefully this mage would be too busy with whatever he was already up to when they bumped into each other to pursue a conversation or the desire to travel with them. In a worst case scenario, I may have to kill him in his sleep. Expressing emotion really takes it out of me.

The man seemed to smile and nod through the whole explanation Gereth concocted with one hand contemplatively stroking his well trimmed goatee and the other supporting the other arm at the elbow. When he finished he nodded several more times and made some approving mm hmms before speaking.

"I understand very well, it is usually best to move straight through these treacherous woods to your destination rather than dawdling about, I wish you well on your journey..." Then the spellsword suddenly had a glint in his eye and quickly stepped forward, not menacingly but to congenially pat his fellow traveller on the shoulder. The second he made contact his face lost all trace of friendliness, "Undead! Repellendum!" The spell flung G away and knocked Rowan over before they could properly respond.

"You are a cunning construct, are you not. And is she your necromancer or are you undead as well? Who sent you to the mountain? Are you after the village? You will not have it, fiends!" Without awaiting any sort of answer he drew his sword and lunged for the still downed G as Rowan made her way to her feet. She rolled her eyes at the dramatics. He was powerful and skilled as ever but he was not a particularly good fighter in the end for all his intelligence. If he had wanted to strike them down quickly he shouldn't have pushed them back, and if he wanted answers he should have bound them first. Intelligence is not the same as wisdom, she sighed inwardly.

"Moventur in terra," she whispered and directed her will with her right hand, the earth beneath the man's foot suddenly shifted and instead of impaling G he fell on top of him and the rather impressive sword flew from his hands and sunk up to its hilt into a tree. Rowan was quick to snatch it as the man struggled off of G with cries of No! I have touched undead flesh!

"For the love of the Gods, Ash, you are so thick!" Rowan pointed the sword at his throat when he had regained his feet, "Dicere verum!" The man ceased moving the moment she spoke the words, he knew how the sword itself worked, and was now on the receiving end of a binding spell that would not allow him to move or to tell any sort of lie or mistruth. He peered down the blade at the shorter mage with an almost baleful expression before recognition hit him.

"R...Rowan? Where have you been? Why are you covered up like that? Why did you run away?"

It would be so easy to lop off his thick skull right now.

"Why did I run? Why did I RUN!? Oh I know not, mayhap for that mine own teacher did reprimand and shout me down for something I had no control over! Mayhap for that you insisted I ignore a problem and refused to assist or even alleviate my fears leaving me no choice but to leave my home and my beloved village to seek my own solution! MAYHAP for that I did express my feelings to you and you and you did scorn them, or never returned them in any case! You are so thick, Ash, I can barely tolerate speaking with you!" Rowan had tears in her eyes and her shouting was almost certain to draw someone or something's attention. Her body trembled from exhaustion and emotion and she certainly contemplated removing the eyesore her instructor presented to her now. Any love and respect she had held for him was clearly gone.

'I...you had feelings for...? Me? You never said anything of the like! I...what? How can...erp-" The startled and still frozen in place spellsword struggled to figure his way out of this situation, all thoughts of the undead fellow were wiped from his mind as he tried to extricate himself from in front of the blade of his former student. She pressed the blade's point ever so slightly closer to his throat.

"I should remove the problem you present to my goals right here and right now..." She stopped the blade with just a tiny nick on his neck. All the time they had spent together stopped her. She flung the blade away. "But I won't. Just go home, Ash, and leave me be." She stalked off into the woods without either of the people behind her, in the general direction of the path that would lead back down to the horses.

Ash sat down heavily before scrambling for his magic sword and regaining his feet. "What just happened here...?" he asked himself more than anyone else.

The second that Gereth felt the hand of the spellsword on his shoulder, he knew that his lie had been seen through. Most likely due to the fact that he had been a target of the teleportation spell, the magic that animated him probably tipped off the man. A kuni knife slipped out his sleeve and was in his hand in an instant. But he got blasted before he could use it. The potent spell dislodged his consciousness for a minute leaving his body to lie on the ground in a haze. Ash, which was his name apparently, tried to impale him, Rowen stopped him with magic, then went on a rant. By the time Gereth got himself back together, Rowen had stormed off and Ash was in some kind of a daze. Gereth sat up and rubbed the back of his neck before standing up. Getting knocked around with magic was one of his least favorite activities. Gereth's face had gone back to expressionless as usual, and as he turned to leave, threw the knife in his hand back at Ash. It was meant to miss him, but it did fly right past his face, it might even have left a cut on his stupid face. "Go home, the person you knew has been through a lot since she reached the capital. Don't follow us, I won't be caught off guard a second time." Gereth ran after Rowen, hopefully the idiot would just go away.

Alex gave a sigh, and began to wipe her tears. She knew she was being melodramatic, and knew that it wasn't going to get her anywhere. Being alone in the cell had allowed her rage and feelings about the situation earlier to stew and fester. Yet she calmly looked up at Lucia now as the woman spoke, almost serenely. Something had clicked inside of her just then.
"It is nothing. Lady Dormer will get what's coming to her." the handmaiden smiled. It didn't quite reach her eyes.

Alex hanged one arm over her legs, and averted her eyes away from Lucia to look out the bars of her cell.
"Why did you leave Uh'pp Nuort'Derr when you did anyway?" she asked softly.
