I think I attract a bunch such as that because I usually try to help people if I know they're upset.
That person was someone I met on Gaia and the friendship just went from there. The other person was from Teamspeak, although he joined acting all upset.
Everyone blew him off so I just wanted to hear him out. And he kept claiming he'd do these terrible things to himself for about a week before apologizing. I never spoke to him again.
The internet is a hard place to gauge honesty. But it's the only place I have any kind of friends on anymore.
It's nice that you're wiling to offer a hand to those in need but it's important to try and maintain a level of distance between yourself and the person to protect yourself from harm and to limit the inevitable emotional attachment they will develop for you.
It is difficult to judge when someone's being dishonest over the Internet but it's not impossible, by paying attention to the way someone talks (the words they use and how they use them) you can fairly accurately gauge their intentions.
Be careful now, I wouldn't want you needlessly exposing yourself to harm.
