Oh gosh, where do I even begin? There have been a lot of really awesome NPCs over the years that it's really hard to choose. I mean, a lot of them can probably be ruled out automatically because they were only made to promote a promotion (such as the Adventure Time items have the Fin and Jake NPC) but... yeah.
While this account surely is not that old, I originally joined back in 2004 with the username dragon_mistress. That account has recently become available again after Gaia graciously decided that they would unlock/unfreeze the old inactive accounts. I've just unfortunately not been able to access it because I don't remember the password or e-mail I used. But that's beside the point.
TRULY there are NPCs that I favour greatly. The reason I mention my original join date is because my favourite NPCs are honestly the old ones, only because I have extremely fond memories of them. Specifically fond, too. I'll say a few words about them in no specific order.
Leon heart
Oh gosh... Leon. If I remember correctly, Leon has always been a Gaia Guilds mascot guy. He usually gave instruction about setting up or maintaining your guild and allowed you to report users and such. However, my most fond memory of Leon was seeing him for the very first time after Towns was originally introduced. I remember clicking about the main screen, watching my avatar skitter around with shimmy-sham legs this way and that! It was really neat. Leon was always there to welcome you to Towns and remind you to click on the globe or map or whatever so you could enjoy your time and chat it up with other folks in real-time. While he often went unnoticed or forgotten, especially once everyone became easily accustomed to the Towns, I'll never forget him. Especially since I can go there right now! I'm so happy Gaia left the original Towns up and running!
Edmund heart
The proprietor of H & R Wesley, Durem's most exclusive clothing boutique (taken right from his profile, yes, bwahaha!). There is really no other way to describe him! Guh, I have good memories with him, oh yes. When I first joined Gaia, all we had in 2004 was gold that was just as hard to earn as it is today, but in another sense. The marketplace wasn't crazy high in prices (the coveted halo item was only a wee 5mil or something, if that) but the best way to earn gold was by posting in the forums or playing at the Casino. Heck, even the puzzle game could get you some cool stuff! But oh man, nothing was really as fabulous to me as the clothing in H & R Wesley. I LOVED it. I CRAVED it. I scrimped and saved often just to get some shoes or something! It was truly a classy place to behold. I used to have the absolute biggest crush on Edmund, even, bahaha! Oh, what a fool, was I. Sometimes it seems like only yesterday until I actually go to the stores and see how they've changed. While it's definitely different and in no ways worse, I do enjoy the new stuff, it's just nice to think back and be nostalgic. I miss the old Edmund and I found his story line became too tragic. However, it definitely kept me interested.

Good gravy! THIS! I remember when the whole Gambino scandal was going down and people (including myself) were practically squirming in their seats every day just to see an update! It was hilarious and cool and just all around AWESOME! Brilliant stuff, I tell you. I guess the reason I find the memorial to be one of my favourite NPCs is because I just get a stupid smile every time I see or think about it. Like the others, it just reminds me of the old days and my old friends, my old items and... just experiencing new things. New things were so different back then than new things now. New things happens multiple times a day, whereas in the past they were more often than not a monthly thing. I remember when they first introduced the new basic hairstyles and how quickly I worked to save up my gold to 6-10k just to change my hair...

Gino goes hand-in-hand with the memorial, basically. Also, he's super cute, so there's no reason he wouldn't be anyone's favourite NPC! I probably had a Gaia crush on him or something, I really wouldn't be surprised. His story was really fun to read, too!

These are pretty much the ones that come to the top of my head, which means these are truly the most special NPCs to me. Some more than others, but together they form one big lump of everything I love about Gaia, old and new.
TL;DR I'm a loser who puts too much emotional stock in nostalgia
