The feast was as enjoyable as always, save for the hiccup that seemed to occur when a boy with an unfortunate last name was called forward. Amelia's eyes widened, before she reasoned, alongside her housemates, that it had to be a coincidence. Hufflepuffs tended to be nice like that after all. The rest of the feast finished without incidence, save for a small Gryffindor boy running over to talk to a Slytherin girl... that boy was in for a shock, Gryffindor and Slytherin never got along. Hufflepuffs could get along with almost anyone, but even they had a hard time cracking Slytherin. Luckily, before Loki had to jump in to the rescue, the boy left. He would be a handful for Loki, and she sympathized.

Shortly after the feast, she joined her housemates in the Hufflepuff dorms near the kitchen. There was no cue to learn a new password, as Hufflepuff house had the same password for their dorms since the school opened; they were too honest and good of people to give it out or ruin it. She chatted idly with her friends before making the excuse to get out and go meet Loki. As soon as she was out the door, her friends turned to each other.

"How long until she realizes we know?" they asked before laughing.

Amelia met with Loki, smiling and waiving at Madam Pince as she entered. The librarian nodded at her, and permitted herself a small smile; puppy love. Amelia and Loki quietly chatted for a bit, enjoying each others company until the library was closed. It was with regret that they parted ways, each wondering just how long they could keep this up.

The next morning, Amelia was up bright and early, going for a jog on the grounds; it was her morning ritual to help wake up and keep herself in shape. Precious few other students did this, but it was something she really enjoyed. The peacefulness of the morning was rarely interrupted, and if it was cold, a simple charm made it more manageable. She insisted on running from her team at practice, something they didn't understand until they saw her stamina killed theirs; then they got on board quite quickly.

It was a quick trip to the bathrooms to wash up, then Amelia was headed into the Great Hall with her friends, Just ahead of them, they saw a Gryffindor boy, the same one from last night, crash forward as he passed the Slytherins. They covered it well, but she saw who the culprit was: Jonathan McDonnough, a fourth year and quite the bully. Her friends looked at her and saw her face harden, so they put their hands up to hold her back... or at least, they tried. No sooner had the boy sat at his house's table than Amelia sprung into action.

She pulled her wand out and waved it, silently casting her chosen spell. Gray light zipped from her wand, hitting the offender straight in the back of his head. Within seconds, the boys brown hair was growing into cascading blonde tresses. He turned around in shock, but Amelia already had her wand stowed away again. within ten seconds, a female sat where the formerly male student had been sitting, freaking out and fuming. As the potions teacher got up to come reprimand her, she saw Loki making a beeline as well. Before either one reached her, the newly minted girl jumped up and took off towards the hospital wing.

"Amelia... that was stupid, Slughorn totally saw you... Beaumont too..." her friend said worringly.

She knew her friends would have her back, but didn't want them to face the punishment as well. "Go guys, I've got this. Go, really." she told them, urging them to leave. The Slytherins were laughing at McDonnough, but it could turn to anger and revenge quite quickly... not her smartest move. "Good morning Loki, fancy seeing you here." she said as Loki reached her first; Slughorn was still getting up and waddling over.

It had been one hell of a night; Ella had almost instantly clashed with the rest of the Slytherin girls for having even spoken to a Gryffindor student and, what was more, a Gryffindor student who affiliated himself with the boy who had Tom Riddles last name. Most of them were purebloods or half-bloods raised as though they were full-blooded and it was the Carrow girl who had started it all. The Carrows were as old a family as the Malfoy family was, though perhaps not as (formerly) well respected in the Wizarding community. The Malfoy's had always held power in the Ministry and in the highest rungs of society, whereas the Carrows... Well, hadn't truly made themselves known until Severes Snape took over as Headmaster at Hogwarts. The real trouble had started when the Carrow girl got the other girls to start picking on Ella...

Ella entered the Great Hall, covering a yawn with one hand. She was dressed impeccably in her robes with the Slytherin emblem on the left side and the green and silver tie around her neck, giving a clear indication of the house she was from, not a single thing out of place, and there was a bag over her shoulder that held the books she thought she would need for the day. All in all, Ella looked fine and well put together... From a distance. The closer she got, the more anyone could see that their was the dark shadow of a bruise on her right cheekbone, just beneath her eye, and that there were dark bags under her pale eyes.. The Carrow girl had convinced the other girls in the dorm to begin picking on Ella, which had escalated to a full-out fight... Despite being a first year, Ella had proven herself to be more than capable at handling herself in a fight. Several of the girls who had attacked her were now sporting boils and other uncomfortable abrasions, which proved that she was quite proficient with hexes and other spells despite only being a first year; it paid to look through the books before hand and practice the want movements. With any luck, she would excel in classes that required such things. However, because of this, she had not slept much for fear that they would try to hex her in her sleep. She pushed her long blond tresses behind one ear before looking up and realizing that there was some kind of altercation going on between the Slytherin and Gryffindor tables... One that involved Cai, Sevix, a girl wearing a Hufflepuff tie with a red streak in her hair, the Gryffindor prefect, and Professor Slughorn... And a Slytherin... Girl? The girl ran past Ella, nearly knocking into her, no doubt headed for the Hospital wing, and she just stared for a moment before continuing forward. "What's going on?" she asked, gazing between Cai and Sevix; neither looked harmed in any way, so what was going on? No one was paying attention to the three first years from the separate houses. They were all more focused on the girl from Hufflepuff. The Gryffindor prefect told the girl that she was going to have to be sent to detention for what she'd just done and took 10 points from Hufflepuff before leaning forward and whispering something in the girls ear. Then... He went on his way. That left Cai, Sevix, and Ella in the company of Professor Slughorn, head of Slytherin House, and the girl from Hufflepuff.

Whereas certain members of other houses would spend their mornings running around the castle grounds, Loki did laps in the Black Lake. Some might say that this was dangerous, as the giant squid inhabited the lake, as well as a colony of merpeople, but the Gryffindor prefect was always prepared; he had his wand strapped to his calf so that he could reach it if trouble arose. This kept him in good shape and the brisk temperature of the water was good for waking him in the mornings; during the winter, it was the matter of a simple charm to keep him warm enough to complete his exercises and the giant squid probably appreciated the heat he brought along with him. It was a pretty docile beast, so Loki was never worried about getting dragged under by it. The mer-people and grindylow's were probably a bigger threat than the squid would ever be. At any rate, he'd spent an hour or two with Amelia at the library and then returned to Gryffindor tower to catch a little shut eye. The prefect had woken early, just as the sun was peeking over the horizon, and gone for his usual swim, catching Amelia jogging around the far edge of the lake as he completed another lap. Afterwards, he went and showered so that he didn't smell like lake-water and dressed in his robes, making sure that his tie was straight and his wand was in the pocket of his robes before heading down to the Great Hall. Most of the Quidditch team was seated towards the middle of the table and he raised a hand in greeting as they called out to him. Loki sat down in the midst of them and helped himself to some sausage and some toast, chatting idly while they waited for Flitwick to come down and begin giving out the class schedules... However, due to the position he was sitting in, he was in a perfect position to see one of the new Gryffindor first years trip; his shoelaces had tied themselves together and the culprit was obvious: Jonathan McDonnough, a fourth year Slytherin and a frequent problem for anyone who wasn't in a higher year. Before Loki could do anything, he saw Amelia whip her wand out and cast a spell, the hex hitting McDonnough in the back of the head. Before the bully could even comprehend what was happening... His brown hair was rapidly growing out into long blond tresses and in just a few short seconds, he was now a she and looked mortified.

The prefect had to stifle a chuckle, he couldn't afford to be seen laughing at something like that, especially since Slughorn had also saw what had transpired as well. Loki stood up and headed towards the little gaggle of people that had clogged up the area between the two tables. Amelia's friends were quick to scatter, no doubt told to do so by her so that they wouldn't get into trouble, and so that left the two first years, Cai Tande and Sevix Riddle, and Amelia herself, though Professor Slughorn was going to be joining them soon and the Malfoy girl was also coming up to the scene, sporting a nice black and blue bruise beneath her eye. As he came to a stop in front of Amelia, she said, "Good morning Loki, fancy seeing you here." He almost chuckled. "Imagine my surprise when I saw the Captain of Hufflepuff's Quidditch team, the honorable Amelia Cresswell, transfigure a male Slytherin student... into a female," he responded. "I'm afraid that I'm going to have to give you detention for that Amelia; you know it's against the rules to use magic against another student. I'm also going to take ten points from Hufflepuff." Anyone else would've taken more points as punishment for what she had just done but not him... It was about time someone showed McDonnough what happened if he picked on other students. Loki had learned last year that Prefects were as much allowed to give and take away points as professor's were and that made things quite a lot easier for the most part, because everyone wanted to win the House Cup... The problem was that the Slytherin prefects could sometimes use this to their advantage and would specifically take points from houses that were beating them in points... Which was typically Gryffindor but it had been a close race last year, with all four houses very close in points. However, he also leaned forward and whispered, "Nice shot." It was a poor decision to get on her bad side. Professor Slughorn had finally reached them and inquired as to what was going on and Loki straightened up, saying, "Jonathan McDonnough decided that he was going to jinx one of the Gryffindor first years and cause him to trip; Miss Cresswell decided to give him a little taste of his own medicine. With all due respect, Professor, you really need to get some of the older Slytherin students under control, before they hurt someone." Slughorn nodded tiredly - he knew what the older students, the ones who had been in his house back before the Battle of Hogwarts - could be like and opened his mouth to tell Amelia that she had detention and to take away points but Loki beat him to it, saying, "I've already taken points and told her she has detention but I'll of course leave that to you to decide what she does." Professor Slughorn blinked in surprise and then told Amelia that she'd report to his office for detention after dinner. After that... Everyone dispersed. Loki looked at Ella and said, "That's quite the bruise you've got there. You might want to go to the hospital wing later and get it healed up." Then he looked at the two new Gryffindor boys. "You two alright?" Loki asked Cai and Sevix, obviously concerned for them.

After Cai had met Sevix down in the common room, the pair headed out to get themselves some breakfast in the main hall before first class was due to start. They found it getting pretty full by the time they arrived, but there was still plenty of open seats for the pair to take up at the Gryffindor table. Unfortunately, on their way to sit (as far away from the other gryffindor’s as possible), someone at the Slytherin table had cast a spell to entangle Cai’s shoelaces which caused the boy to smash to the ground.

Sevix stopped abruptly and gave a hard glare at the Slytherin who had cast the spell, but instead of doing any retaliatory, he knelt down to help Cai up at the look his friend gave him. They moved on then, with no reaction to the Slytherin table, and sat themselves down at the empty end of the Gryffindor table. Sevix tried not to notice that, even though the pair sat well away from the others, the others still moved an extra few inches away, as if to tell him and Cai they were not accepted. It was beyond infuriating, but there was nothing he could do.. well.. nothing he could do that wouldn’t get him expelled from the school, which would only foster the wary hatred others seemed to hold towards him.

Well, at least he had Cai.. though he couldn’t help but know that the boy was becoming outcast simply for being his friend. "We should be getting our schedules shortly.. but personally, I am hoping Transfiguration is our first class. Something that could be fun and keep us awake in the morning." He answered the question with a light laugh just as Ella approached and asked what was going on. Sevix looked to her with slight confusion before looking around, trying to determine what it was she was talking about. The only thing off that he noticed was that Professor Slughorn was talking with an older Hufflepuff student and Loki, the Gryffindor Prefect.

Sevix returned his gaze to Ella and just shook his head lightly, “I do not know.. I was not really paying attention.” He admitted, thought felt kind of stupid for having had to admit that. Something had clearly gone on, literally right behind him and Cai, and he had had no idea. “Might have had something to do with one of the Slytherins having had jinxed Cai’s shoelaces.” Which was something he was clearly unhappy about having happened, as a small frown crossed his face. “If so, they deserved whatever may have happened... Which does make me ask... What happened to you? Are you all right?"

Ella had hardly managed to answer his question and sit down with the pair, soley to alleviate their worries, before the house prefect came over to speak with the small group. He spoke first to Ella, telling her she should probably head to the hospital wing before he turned his attention to the boys, asking how they were holding up. Sevix just looked at him, trying to determine if he actually cared about the answer or was just doing what a prefect was supposed to do. And while he just cautiously stared, Cai chirped up saying they were all fine; that what happened wasn't anything they couldn't handle civily.

Amelia could see Loki was trying hard to be a professional and not laugh. It really was admirable to be able to set aside personal feelings and do the job at hand, and she could respect the hard place she had put him in... yea, she'd have to apologize for that later. Bullies were not something the fiery Hufflepuff tolerated, and this would not be her first detention for doing something like this. Admittedly, it would be the first time she'd done it right in front of a teacher.

Loki gave her detention and took points before complimenting her on her shot, forcing her to keep her face neutral. Did she feel bad for what she did? Not even a little bit. Madam Pomfrey would have McDonnough sorted out fairly quickly, so it was no harm done in the long run. Maybe it would teach the little punk a lesson... though she doubted it very much. People rarely changed.

When Slughorn arrived, Loki explained he had already dished out punishment. Slughorn nodded and then told Amelia she would serve her detention with him after dinner. Yay, just in time for a Slug Club meeting. She avoided it but Slughorn dogged her... well, it could be worse. After all, she wasn't scrubbing bedpans or any of the like. As for the points, those would definitely be back soon enough. The worse thing would be if McGonnagal found out. The headmistress and former Transfiguration teacher would not take it well if a former student was using her subject as a punishment. Amelia could only hope the headmistress was too busy to hear about a detention.

This was the point when everyone dispersed, Loki heading towards his house's table and Amelia heading to her own house's table. Her backside had barely touched the seat before her friends were asking her what happened, and in how much trouble she was getting. Soon enough their laughing conversation was lost in the sea of noise that was the Great Hall at meal time. When she caught Loki's eye next, she mouthed him a thank you. It really could have gone much worse.

Cai was about to reply to Sevix when Ella came up, sporting some injuries... his hand reflexively tightened around his fork. She asked them what was up, giving the boys their first clue that something was going on. Both looked around her at the meeting of students and teachers with raised eyebrows. Cai didn't see exactly who had jinxed him and so couldn't tell someone was missing, but the timing was too good to think the two events were not connected. Sevix beat him to the punch though, suggesting it had to do with Cai's jinxing.

At Sevix's frown about the event, Cai opened his mouth to tell his friend not to worry, but was again beaten to the punch by Sevix bringing the topic back to Ella. Before she could answer though, the prefect from last night came over. Everyone seemed to be moving very quickly this morning. At least Ella had time to sit down, something that made his ever present smile grow a little bit.

The prefect suggested Ella visit the Hospital Wing, before asking how the boys were doing. From the tone in his voice, he seemed to be deeply concerned. It was nice, but Cai felt they were fine. “We're good, what was that all about?” he asked, nodding his head towards the Slytherin table. Everything seemed to be calming down again in the Great Hall, so it seemed the Slytherins found the hexing funny, rather than cause for alarm. It likely had something to do with it coming from Hufflepuff.

In short order, food was done and they were handed their schedules... they had Fridays off! Their Head of House explained it was to help them ease into school and deal with homework, which was actually quite nice of the school. Comparing notes with Ella revealed the trio would have Transfiguration, Potions, and Defense Against the Dark Arts together. Three classes! More than he had thought they would get.

Unfortunately, the first class was charms, which mean they would not meet up in Potions just before lunch. Charms was disappointingly boring, as Flitwick informed they would not be doing practical work for several lessons. According to the professor, they needed to learn the groundwork, and at protests, reminded them all he had been doing this for nearly four decades now. It quieted the grumbles, but it was easy to tell the class was not happy. Flitwick cured the rest of the unease by showing off some of his more spectacular charmwork. As they left for the potions class, Cai's quill was still floating around his head in a lazy circle, though Flitwick assured him it would wear off soon enough.

Slughorn had yet to arrive, leaving a classroom full of students. Sevix and Cai had been some of the first to arrive, and had a table to themselves. Hopefully they would be joined by Ella. A couple of students laughed at the circling quill, something that made Cai chuckle when he noticed it. As Ella opened the door to the classroom, the spell wore off, dropping the quill into Cai's hand. It looked smooth, but it was pure luck as he had simply been resting his hand on the table. This became evident as he laughed and pointed it out to Sevix, ruining all pretense of smoothness.

"How lucky was that?" he laughed to his friend.

Sevix shook his head and told her, “I do not know.. I was not really paying attention.” Something had clearly happened, as prefects and older students and professors surely didn't congregate in the middle of the tables for no reason, but her friend was obviously not going to be of any help when it came to figuring out what it was that had transpired. “Might have had something to do with one of the Slytherins having had jinxed Cai’s shoelaces,” he added, something that clearly made him unhappy about, as a small frown crossed his face at the thought. Ella resisted the urge to roll her eyes; leave it to the Slytherin's to pick on the Gryffindor first years when they knew they couldn't fight back. “If so, they deserved whatever may have happened... Which does make me ask... What happened to you? Are you all right?" asked Sevix, suddenly worried about her. She reached up to touch the bruise under her eye and winced as her fingers encountered the sore flesh and she put her hand back in her pocket. The fair-haired female sat down at the Gryffindor table, earning herself a few odd looks from the other Gryffindor and several glares from the Slytherin's that she ignored, and she opened her mouth to tell them what had happened, only to have the Gryffindor prefect speak up and suggest she go to the hospital wing. It was just a bruise, it wasn't anything she couldn't handle... And making it go away might make that rude Carrow girl think she could do it again. But keeping the bruise might give her the idea that Ella was weak. It was a bit of a conundrum... Her parents would know how to react in this situation but they weren't here. They would expect her to act in a way that would fit the Malfoy family but that would likely involve some particularly nasty hexing that was above her current level of understanding. She remained silent as the prefect spoke to the boys about what had transpired, which apparently involved a Slytherin student hexing Cai's shoelaces so that he would trip and then that Hufflepuff student giving the Slytherin student a taste of his own medicine by hexing him, which had resulted in the Gryffindor prefect getting involved and now the girl had detention and had had points taken away and had been given detention. Once the Gryffindor prefect had walked away, Ella said, "One of the Slytherin first years got the other first years riled up enough to attack me last night, after the prefect left." She shrugged, "It wasn't anything I couldn't handle, don't worry about it. I need to go to my table now; schedules will be handed out soon and I want to make sure I'm there to get mine. I'll see you later guys." She gave them a little smile as she stood up and left the Gryffindor table, going back over to the Slytherin table and shoving herself in between two first years, a boy and a girl, who had not wanted to move over. They looked highly offended but didn't say anything as she helped herself to a few sausages and a bagel with some cream cheese, though whether it was because they were intimidated by her or because they'd seen what happened to the last person to pick on a first year, she wasn't sure. Eventually Professor Slughorn came down to their table with a pile of papers, each of which was the students schedules. As she looked at it, it appeared that she would have Friday's off along with almost all of the other students except for those in their seventh year, as they would be preparing for the N.E.W.T.s at the end of the school year. Before they all headed out of the Great Hall, Cai and Sevix stopped to compare schedules with her... They would be having Transfiguration, Potions, and Defense Against the Dark Arts together, with the first and second being on Mondays and Wednesdays, and DATDA being on Tuesdays and Thursdays... Potions would be a double. However, she had Herbology first period with the Hufflepuff's and it turned out to be quite droll, as Professor Sprout explained that they wouldn't begin working with the magical plants and herbs for several lessons... This made no one happy and there was quite a lot of grumbling about it but the professor gave no indication that she heard it. Afterwards she headed down to the dungeons, where the potions would be held. Even though Severus Snape was dead, it seemed that they were not about to move the classes from the dank, cold dungeons. As she entered with the rest of the Slytherins, she could see that the first year Gryffindor's were already there and that everyone had claimed a seat. Her fellow house-mates were quick to grab a stool as well and that left the only open chair being the one by Cai and Sevix; it seemed that fate was giving her no choice but to break the House boundaries. "Let me guess, you had Charms first thing?" she asked, sitting down next to them; the fair-haired female had arrived in time to see the quill fall into Cai's hands. "You're lucky, I had the unfortunate luck to have herbology first thing. I hope we do something interesting this class period." Her father hadn't warned her that the first day would be so... Mundane.

The Riddle boy was looking at him like he was unsure whether the prefect was actually concerned or just asking because it was his 'job' to do so; regardless of whatever his initial opinion was of the 6th year Gryffindor, he remained silent and left the talking to the other boy, Cai Tande. “We're good, what was that all about?” asked the young blond, nodding his head towards the Slytherin table. "Just a little... Karma, I suppose. The Slytherin who jinxed your shoelaces is a pretty big bully and the Captain of the Hufflepuff team happened to see it; she's not one to tolerate bullying, especially not of first years who can't defend themselves, so she kind of jumped the gun and came to your rescue. McDonnough was given a little taste of his own medicine. He'll be right as rain in a few, Madam Pompfrey will be able to fix the damage done and I suspect that he'll think twice before picking on you again." Though it wouldn't stop the well known bully from picking on the younger students for very long; bad habits were hard to change and if no one actively attempted to change the way McDonnough behaved, nothing was going to change. And since the rumors were beginning to flow that the Riddle kid was a member of the former Dark Lord's bloodline, it was unlikely that he would be left alone; people were going to treat him poorly and maybe even try to provoke him into proving that was who he really was. "Well, since it seems that you two are alright, I'll leave you to your breakfast. Remember, if you have any questions, feel free to come to me or Stephanie; she's the female prefect. I promise she doesn't bite." Loki winked to show he was joking before going back to his spot near the center of the table, where his friends were quick to ask what had happened. Their chatter was quickly lost in the rising noise around them. At one point, he looked up and met Amelia's gaze. She mouthed 'Thank you' and he smiled in response, nodding his head. That whole ordeal could have ended up much worse, especially if the Slytherin's had jumped to McDonnoughs defense, so it was a good thing he'd seen it before things could escalate. Before things had gotten bad, before the Battle of Hogwarts, the school had had a Dueling Club and the muggle born Gryffindor student had proven himself quite adept at various hexes and spells... Getting into a full on duel in the middle of the Great Hall - which wasn't entirely impossible to believe might happen, anything was possible now - was not a good idea, especially when there were people like him and Amelia there to fight back, not to mention the teachers and dozens of other's who were now competent duellers thanks to the Battle of Hogwarts.

Not long after everything had slipped back into its normal rhythm, the head of Gryffindor House came down and began to distribute the schedules for the school year. Lucky him, he had a free period first thing in the morning on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays - he had advanced potions and Care of Magical Creatures on Fridays - and that meant he'd be able to direct first years to their proper classes. Then it was Herbology, Defense Against the Dark Arts, lunch, double potions, Runes, and Charms on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays, Thursdays was a free day but he would likely fill that with something so that he'd have something to do aside from homework. And then there was of course Quidditch practices that had to be scheduled and there would be games on Saturdays and the patrols that the prefects had to do and it all added up to one very busy semester. Winter break would be a welcome reprieve but, for now, he was just glad to be back to Hogwarts. Everyone began to leave the Great Hall now that they had their schedules and Loki stood too, stretching luxuriously, like a cat, before heading towards the doors so that he could direct the students towards the places they needed to go. Didn't want to be late on their first day after all. The prefect spent his free period helping students find their way through the castle, showing them which steps to jump so that you wouldn't get stuck when the step disappeared, which doors were hiding as walls and vice versa. By the time his free period was over... Loki was feeling a bit as though he'd just ran up all the stair in Hogwarts a hundred times over. But it was worth it to help those kids navigate a castle that seemed to have a life of its own sometimes. He returned to the Gryffindor Common Room to gather his things for Herbology - which included Dragon-skin gloves to protect his hands - and then he left the Castle and strode across the grounds towards Greenhouse Five, one of the greenhouses that housed more dangerous plants and were used to teach advanced Herbology classes. Naturally he had herbology with the other 6th year Gryffindors and the 6th year Hufflepuffs. When he arrived, Loki found that everyone had already partnered up by large pots that contained what appeared to be- "Snargaluff's... Great," muttered Loki. He knew they had been used against the invading forces during the Battle of Hogwarts and they could be dangerous... Very dangerous. But of course that was what he and the other 6th years were here for: to learn how to care for these dangerous, ridiculous plants.

To Loki's surprise... All of his friends had already paired out and that left him paired with... "Fancy seeing you here Amelia," he smiled in an easy manner. Had they done this on purpose? Did his friends know about his relationship with the Hufflepuff Quidditch Captain? No, surely not... He slipped his dragon-skin gloves on as Professor Sprout walked into the Greenhouse. Everyone was keeping a wise distance from the harmless looking stumps because almost everyone knew that, like much else in this school, they weren't what they seemed.

The morning seemed to go by rather quickly, with all of Amelia's teachers stressing the difficulty of the classes. They had gotten their OWL's, and now were on path for NEWT's, which meant everything was about to get much, much harder. For starters, every single professor had informed the class that nonverbal spells were to be the only accepted method of spell casting from here on out. There were some spells that Amelia was good at doing this with, but she was far from feeling comfortable.

It was with a big smile that she headed down into herbology class, because they would be allowed to be as loud as they wanted when working with the plants. Her career advisement last year had not been very helpful, and she was as undecided as ever. She would love to continue Quidditch, but knew that few made it to the professionals, so it paid to have a back up. Nothing sounded good to her because she wanted to do everything. Being tied down to one career, or even worse: a desk job... just no.

It seemed they were dealing with Snargaluffs, which were dangerous plants used in the defense of Hogwarts at the battle; Professor Sprout loved to tell the story. When it came time to partner off, everyone teamed up rather quickly, leaving her with Loki. It was almost as if her friends knew, but she seriously doubted that. They would likely be okay if they did know, but still, it was not something to be risked.
"Fancy seeing you as well. Think we can tame this thing?" she asked, putting on her gloves and nodding towards the stump. He offered her a pair of goggles, which she took with a grateful nod. "Alright superstar, let's do this." she said, snapping the goggles in place and grinning cockily.

Three minutes later, Loki was smashing a pod in a bowl while she used her wand to seal up their various cuts. She'd received a particularly nasty cut across her face, but one wand wave and it was as if it never happened. Reparo removed the scratch from her goggles as well, so she could see once more through them. If not for the goggles... well, she'd be visiting Madame Pomfrey for an eye injury for sure. Loki seemed to be having trouble with the pods, hitting it with the hilt of his knife to no avail. A quick look around the classroom confirmed that nobody else was able to cut through the pods either, and some had yet to grab a single pod. Thinking, Amelia tapped her wand on the table. None of the knives seemed to be working, blunt force didn't seem to be working... duh, she was a witch!

"Here, let me see it really quick please." She said, stepping over with her wand ready. Loki stepped aside and admitted her access. With a steady hand, she pointed her wand at the pod and whispered "Diffindo!" and began to try splitting it with the shearing charm. What happened next was not something she was expecting in the slightest: the pod exploded, sending tendril like seeds all over her. Amelia dropped her wand and quickly brushed off the seeds as quickly as possible. While Professor Sprout explained how Diffindo was a bad idea, Amelia and Loki managed to get the writhing seeds into their bowl.

"Can't say the first day is ever boring, that's for sure." she chuckled. It took a lot to keep her in bad spirits, and some disgusting seeds and healed cuts were definitely not enough. One poor guy a couple of tables over neglected to put up his longer hair, and it was now much shorter because of the plant. From his complaints, it was not sitting well with him, even if he could get it regrown by Madame Pomfrey after class.

Sevix frowned lightly as Ella explained how she had come to get the bruised cheek and his eyes shifted to look at the Slytherin table, and he became suddenly very glad the sorting hat saw fit to allow him not to be a part of that group. If Ella got a black eye on the first night, what would have happened to him? Well, he would either become a king among those who believed rightfully that he was Voldemort’s son, or he’d be in the hospital wing. He really couldn’t see a middle ground between those two options. He was lucky to end up Gryffindor, where they simply ignored him or just cast glaring looks his way when he caught someone’s eye. Then, to pull him from his thoughts, Ella excused herself from the table as the food started to appear. “We will see you after breakfast.” He said as she walked away, then he turned his attentions to the task at hand; Breakfast.

He and Cai had hardly finished eating when their schedules were handed to them. The pair studied their schedules momentarily before heading off to find Ella before she vanished with the rest of the slytherins into the halls. A quick comparison let them know they had three classes together. “Fantastic.” Sevix commented with a smile that’s so far only been reserved for Cai and Ella before Ella broke away to find her way to her first class, leaving Cai and Sevix to search for Charms class alone. And while Cai was surprisingly disappointed about charms being first, Sevix was quite excited. Charms was one class he was really looking forward too, and even though Professor Flitwick let them know they would not be doing any practical work for a few lessons, his excitement did not diminish. The class seemed to fly by, and he left with an amused smile on his face as he watched Cai’s quill hover slowly around his friends head as they headed for Potions.

As nearly the first to arrive, Cai and Sevix found an empty table with room for one more, which they hoped would not be taken before Ella arrived. It still remained open by the time Ella arrived, and amusingly enough, the charm floating Cai’s quill wore off as soon as she approached and the thing fell straight into Cai’s open hand. Both the boys broke into surprised laughter as Cai exclaimed about how lucky that was. Ella, assuming correctly what class was first thing for the pair, sat down with the pair and spoke of how lucky they were to have charms, rather than herbology. “Yes. Herbology does sound dreadfully boring.” He commented just as professor Slughorn finally arrived.

Thankfully this class almost instantly promised not to be boring, as one of the first things Professor Slughorn said after his initial explanation of potions, was that he wanted to start the class off with practical work; Though it was likely just so the professor could take a look at who was a likely candidate for his ‘Slug Club’. So, they got right down to it and were told to turn to page 12 of their texts and brew a ‘babbling beverage’; A potion that forces the consumer to speak uncontrollable nonsense.

Sevix was not terribly great at making the potion. He did an okay job but there were plenty other students who did much better. “I do not know how I managed to mess up. I had followed the directions perfectly..” He mumbled mostly to himself as Slughorn moved on past his after just kind of sighing at the potion in the pot. He looked then to Cai and Ella as Slughorn headed towards them, wondering how they had done with their potions.

"Fancy seeing you as well. Think we can tame this thing?" Ameila asked, putting on her dragon-skin gloves and nodding towards the stump. Loki looked at the stump and scowled a little; he didn't honestly want to touch the Snargaluff Stump at all because it was dangerous and had a penchant for causing a lot of injuries to the people that were trying to prune it and harvest its seeds. He offered her a pair of goggles and she took with a grateful nod. "If anyone can, it'll be us," he chuckled, not a hundred percent certain of that. Even Professor Sprout had a hard time taming them sometimes. Amelia snapped the goggles into place and said, "Alright superstar, let's do this." This was accompanied by a cocky smile that he returned. They dove right in and the harmless looking stump came to life the second they got close enough, thorny vines whipping out from it's surface and beginning to thrash and heave, intent on injuring the two sixth years going after the pods in the center of the stump. They were green and about the size of an apple and it was the tubers inside the seeds that they were after, best if they were fresh. At least, that was what Professor Sprout said. Loki was the one who managed to get the first pod, though the Snargaluff tried to keep him from it by closing the little hallow and trapping his hand inside. With a little help from Amelia, he managed to free his hand and bring the pod with him. Now he was attempting to smash the pod open so that they could collect the tubers, while Amelia sealed up their cuts and fixed their goggles. Loki had a couple scratches across his that would definitely impair his vision for the next bout with the stump; if it hadn't been for the goggles, they'd both be sporting eye injuries that would need immediate attention from Madam Pompfrey. Unfortunately - and maybe a bit fortunately - their next battle with the Snargaluff wouldn't be for a while, as he was having a hard time with the pod. The blades of the knives weren't cutting through the skin and hitting it with the hilt of the knife didn't seem to be doing anything either. At this rate, no one was going to be able to collect more than one pod before the period was over. "Here, let me see it really quick please," said Amelia, stepping over with her wand at the ready. Loki moved over and admitted her access to the stubborn green pod and with a steady hand, she pointed her wand at the pod and whispered "Diffindo!" Whatever Loki had been expecting, it wasn't what actually happened: the pod exploded, sending the tubers cascadingl over her. Amelia dropped her wand and quickly brushed off the seeds, which hit the ground wiggling. While Professor Sprout explained why Diffindo was a bad idea - as though it hadn't been obvious - Amelia and Loki scrambled to get the writhing tubers back into their bowl. "Can't say the first day is ever boring, that's for sure," chuckled Amelia once the tubers were back in the bowl. Loki smiled. He knew that it took a lot to keep her in bad spirits and something like vicious tree stumps, wriggling tubers, and various healed cuts were definitely not enough to do so. The Gryffindor prefect looked up and over as one of the guys a couple of tables over had neglected to tie back his long hair and he was now complaining about its suddenly shortened length, which was thanks to the plant. Judging by his complaints, the sudden haircut was not sitting well with him; Loki didn't understand why he was complaining because it was a) the students fault that his hair was shorter because he hadn't tied his hair back and b) he could get it regrown by Madam Pomfrey after class. He rolled his eyes and told Amelia, "Just wait till we get to the Quidditch pitch; nothing's ever boring there." This was accompanied by a friendly wink. It wouldn't be considered strange for some rival captains to do something like that... Which reminded him that he needed to get quidditch try-outs scheduled and try to work with the other captains - aside from Amelia because that would be the easiest - to make sure that everyone got a fair chance at a decent practice time. "Back into it?" he asked her, nodding at the stump as he pulled his goggles back on; there was no way he was giving that thing a chance at his eye-sight. They dove back into the task of retrieving the pods from the stump and as one of the branches seized Amelias hair, Loki beat it away with a heavy book entitled 'Magical Herbs and Fungi' and before they knew it, she'd gotten another pod. After a little bit of work, they managed to break open the pod in the bowl instead of tubers ending up all over the floor. By the end of the period, they'd gotten most of the pods out and broke them open, their bowl filled with the disgusting green tubers and as they left the greenhouses, he was feeling distinctly tired. "Well... That was fun." Not. "Hey, you've got one of those things in your hair." Loki pulled the errant tuber out of his girlfriends hair and tossed it back into the greenhouse.

"Yep, it was pretty interesting. We didn't get to do much, but he did show us some cool stuff. Like with my quill." he said, looking down at the quill he had caught. It might not have been the most hands on and practical class, but it was at least interesting. Hopefully though this lesson would be interesting, because he could tell both of his friends were done with being bored and unlikely to be able to handle much more of the tedium. Herbology was something Cai was not sure about, as he did not have a green thumb, so it would be an interesting class, but one that would have to wait for speculation as Slughorn had arrived.

Well, Slughorn's belly preceded him in, but the teacher followed it pretty quickly. He explained that they would be doing work today, working on an easier potion that should show where they were with their initial skills. A babbling beverage seemed simple enough if they could follow the directions. Cai might seem like an airhead, but he was quite good at paying attention. The airheadedness was from the fact that he didn't let much bother him and so didn't react to much.

Thirty minutes later, Cai was standing over his potion, which was frothing merrily and steaming quite nicely. He felt bad that Sevix wasn't doing well, but there was no chance to help his friend without Slughorn stepping in to stop them. When Slughorn reached Sevix's potion, he just gave a sort of sigh and moved on to Cai's. While Slughorn looked at Cai's potion, Cai looked over at Sevix who mumbled about following all of the directions. The appearance of his potion though showed either a mistake or bad directions.
"I think the worm root might have been sliced a little too thin, or the Rige leaves might have been ground too much. But you'll get it next t-"

Cai was cut off by an appreciative chuckle from Slughorn.
"Aye, an eye for potions m'boy? What's your name?" he chuckled, the motion setting off ripples through the teacher's sizable gut. "Caius Tande sir." he said a bit awkwardly, wrong-footed from being interrupted, though it likely looked like he was off from being talked to by the teacher. "Tande? Of the-" Slughorn began, only to be cut off by Cai. After all, if the teacher could cut him off, it was only fair if he did the same... right?

"Yes sir, that's my dad." Cai nodded. Slughorn nodded, clearly impressed, before moving on to the rest of the class. After checking the rest of the potions and assigning brief homework of a half page on the properties of the babbling beverage, Slughorn dismissed the class. He was at his desk, clearly working on a list as everyone was let out. Maybe it was for his infamous 'Slugclub', but nobody could be sure unless they were brash enough to ask him.

There was no time to worry about that though as it was lunchtime! After lunch it was flying practice, which Cai knew Ella would be looking forward to. As they left the classroom, he walked with his two friends.
"So, excited for flying practice?" he asked as they walked.

“Yes. Herbology does sound dreadfully boring,” agreed Sevix as Slughorn arrived. "I hope we get to practical work soon or I may die of boredom," replied Ella as she pulled out her potions book, quill, and journal - she would be taking her own notes over the course of the class, as her mother had suggested it was a good idea - "I know we won't be working with any truly dangerous plants or anything but I would like to do work rather than just listen to a professor talk." Slughorn entered the room, proceeded by his rather prodigious belly, and that's when class truly began. He started out with an explanation of potions and then said that they would be starting out the class with practical work. Everyone knew that it was likely just because Slughorn was looking for new students to drag into his 'Slug Club' but the practical work was appreciated nonetheless. They would be brewing a 'babbling beverage', a potion that forced the consumer to speak uncontrollable nonsense if ingested, and there was a rustle of pages as everyone turned to page twelve in their potions book and got to work. By the end of the class period, the babbling beverage had been completed by the students with varying degrees of success. Sevix seemed disappointed with his but from what Ella could see, it didn't look that wrong... Maybe a slight deviation in the ingredients or something. “I do not know how I managed to mess up. I had followed the directions perfectly..” Her friend sounded quite disappointed actually and Slughorn's attitude towards it didn't help; her father had told her once that Slughorn could be quite pretentious and she was seeing that now. Cai told him, "I think the worm root might have been sliced a little too thin, or the Rige leaves might have been ground too much. But you'll get it next t-" Slughorn cut him off with a chuckle, asking, "Aye, an eye for potions m'boy? What's your name?" Ella felt her eye twitch and a sliver of the atypical Malfoy brand of disgust showed itself on her face for a brief second at the sight of the ripples moving through the teacher's stomach. "Caius Tande sir."

Her friend sounded awkward, as though it was from being directly addressed by their professor, but Ella highly doubted that was it. In the short time that she had known Cai, he hardly seemed the kind of person to be uncomfortable talking to a teacher. The name seemed to catch Slughorn's attention and he asked, "Tande? Of the-" Cai cut him off, "Yes sir, that's my dad." Slughorn nodded, obviously impressed, before moving on to check Ella's potion. She had done about as well as Cai had. "What's your name lass?" questioned Slughorn. "Elladora Malfoy," she replied. His eyebrow rose, "Any relation of Lucius or Azriel Malfoy?" She nodded, "Yes sir, Lucius is my uncle and Azriel is my father." Slughorn nodded, "Wonderful students those pair, though if I remember correctly, they were more adept at dueling." Ella almost smirked but managed to keep her expression neutral, "Yes sir, top of their class." He wouldn't know about her mother, as she had not attended Hogwarts. Slughorn nodded and moved on to check the rest of the potions; afterwards, he assigned a brief homework assignment that consisted of a half page on the properties of the babbling beverage, and then he dismissed the class. Ella mostly ignored the fact that Slughorn was scribbling on a long roll of parchment, no doubt making a new list of recruits for his club; Cai would likely be on that list and Sevix would too, if Slughorn heard the rumors that were already circulating, and Ella figured she'd be invited by one of her friends to attend one of the parties that the professor tended to throw. The Malfoys had been coming to this school for generations, so having one in his club wouldn't be a novelty; Ella doubted he'd ask her join and she didn't much care. Not that she was really worried about that list, as it was now time for lunch! And after lunch, they had flying practice. The trio ascended towards the Great Hall and Cai asked, "So, excited for flying practice?" Ella smiled, "Yes, I can't wait; I've heard that we get right to practicing because there are no books to help you fly. Once we all have more practice, I hope we get to have mock Quidditch games. I think that would be a lot of fun."

Once they got to the Great Hall, the trio had to split up and go to their respective tables. Ella had her pick of the seats, as not all the classes had let out yet. She sat down and began to fill her plate with food, beginning to eat as she pulled out her journal, flipping to the notes she had taken during potions class. It would be used solely for potions and once it was full, she'd send it home to her mother for examination. That was the way potion masters were made. After she'd eaten, Ella took a breath and stood, putting her journal back into her bag before heading over to the Gryffindor table. She could feel what felt to be thousands of eyes on her back. "Whenever you guys are done eating, we can head out to the practice field if you want," she said, sitting down next to Cai and Sevix.

Amelia smiled at Loki at the mention of getting back on the Quidditch pitch; oh how she longed to get back on her broom. He was right though about nothing being boring, there was always something exciting occurring when you put many teenagers high in the air to play a sport. Sure, she'd never had a Potter level of excitement, such as nearly swallowing a snitch or having a broom hit the Whomping Willow, but she still had her fair share of intense moments. One of the best examples was when, during Beater try-outs, an overzealous bludger ripped free of the storage trunk and hit her square in the face. She'd only been saved because her other chasers caught her before she hit the ground. The cases were now reinforced with magic, in addition to leather straps.

When he suggested getting back into it, she nodded, and they had it again... and again... and again. By the time the bell rang, they were sore, but thanks to some wandwork, they were at least free of cuts.
"Some year this will be if that's our first day task." she chuckled as she picked up her bags and exited the greenhouse. Herbology always worked up an appetite, and they were lucky this year to have Sprout's class just before lunch. As they walked, Loki noticed a tuber in her hair and removed it, tossing it away. "Thanks, definitely not a look I want to go for." she smiled at him as they walked.

As they approached the Great Hall, their friends caught up with them, and they were soon separated by house once more. Never before had she wished the house tables didn't exist, but she did now. How nice would it be to be able to sit with whomever you wanted? Why did they have to deal with it like this? Then again... nobody told them they couldn't sit with the other houses, they all just separated naturally, so maybe it was the fault of the students more than the staff. It was a thought that she dwelled on a bit while eating, so she was slightly quiet while her friends all talked. When she was asked why she was so quiet, she quickly lied, saying she was trying to figure out how she wanted to work practices. This turned the topic to practices, moves, and other Quidditch things, and she was dragged into talking and out of her own head.

The babble of the Great Hall died down a bit as a Slytherin girl walked over and began talking to some Gryffindors; it appeared to be the same group who kept crossing boundaries before. Amelia couldn't help but smile at this.
"Good for them." she said aloud, and a couple of her friends nodded in agreement. "Guys... we should keep an eye on them. The jinxing this morning won't be the end of things." she suggested idly. At the looks from her friends, she cleared her throat and began to explain, "We have no problem with what they are doing, but come on, you think Slytherin or Gryffindor is going to take this? Some hot head is going to do something stupid... and then I'll have to transfigure someone else."

Her friends laughed at the reference to this morning, but nodded in agreement. Hufflepuffs were loyal and kind, and would be fierce protectors if needed. The way the first years were going... yea, it was going to be needed.
"I'll tell Beaumont to keep an eye on them when we discuss how to do tryouts." she added. "So, speaking of, who's caught your eyes?" she asked, and the topic dissolved into sports once more. Quidditch was a way of life with them.

Sevix, while happy for his friends managing to correctly make the potion, was still disappointed in himself for having failed something that was apparently supposed to be fairly simple. Perhaps potions just wasn’t going to be his thing, but that was fine, it wasn’t one of the classes he was really looking forward to attending anyways. Thankfully, with the potions now made and looked over, class was pretty much over. Slughorn gave an assignment on the properties of the potion they had just brewed before sending them on their way to lunch. Sevix packed all his stuff and headed off with Cai and Ella at his side, and soon enough, they potions was forgotten for the moment and flying practice was brought up. Sevix’ heart swelled at the the mere thought of flying, something he absolutely loved, and excitement coursed through him. “I am very excited, I have really missed it.” He commented just as they entered the great hall and one of their third had to split away to sit at the proper table. Sevix and Cai meanwhile, found a place near the end of the Gryffindor table, so as to not be picked on bothered by any of the others who had already arrived.

Sevix and Cai were mostly quiet during lunch, focusing on eating rather than speaking, but there was a bit of talk of the classes they had already attended and what they were expecting from those to come. Then, before they knew it, Ella arrived at their table and sat down beside them. Sevix looked over to her with a smile, trying to let her know that just because everyone else seemed to think her crazy for interacting with students from a different house, he was happy she didn’t care about those ‘unspoken’ rules of the school. “I am ready to go if Cai is.” Sevix replied to her question as he pushed his already empty plate just a bit further away from himself. Cai, with a last mouthful of food, just nodded eagerly before pushing his mostly empty plate away and swallowing what was left in his mouth. Sevix let out a tiny laugh before getting up with the other two and headed out.

They found their way out to the field after only getting turned around once, and were one of the first few to arrive. Brooms were laid out on the grass, ready and waiting for the students, but Madame Hooch had not yet arrived. Only when all the students had made their way out to the field and just moments before the start of class time, did Madame Hooch arrive. She walked briskly to the end of the two lines of brooms and waved her arm for the students to gather, “Good afternoon class.” She said as the students stepped up to their chosen brooms. “Good afternoon, Madame Hooch.” Sevix replied along with the rest of the class. She looked over the group momentarily before speaking once more, “Well, what are you waiting for, everyone step up to the left side of your broomstick.” Everyone took the few steps necessary, before she continued, “Stick your right hand over the broom, and say ‘Up’”.

Sevix put his hand out over the broom, which for the moment was nothing more than a stick with straw tied to the end, then said “Up.” The broom instantly bolted up from the ground and smacked into his waiting hand, in a style very reminiscent of Harry Potter’s first flying lesson. Sevix stared at the thing with surprise for a few moments before turning to his friends, to watch them as they attempted to have their brooms rise from the ground and into their hands.
