As for me as a kid -- I do have some fun memories.
Climbing tall trees, walking around the tops of silos, jumping off the cliff by the waterfall, blowing up tree stumps with TNT with an old timer, shaking widow maker trees (the ones where the top is dead) until the top 20 or 30 feet would break off and then run out of the way before they fell on us. Riding logs down the flooded creek in a fall rain storm. Etc. Good times.
But on the whole I was actually a pretty tame kid and stayed out of trouble. None of the stuff I did seems as dangerous as some of the crap I see in those Vines video fail compilations. Well... falling off a 50 foot silo wall might have sucked ... but on the whole the stuff I did had a lower chance of getting hurt than trying to ride your bike off a two story roof onto a metal stair handrail.
For some reason, I imagined you to be one of these kids.
They don't make kids like they used to.
Hah! Not quite like that but I do remember a big metal slide that was almost as tall as the one in the middle photo. And I think for real that tall, not kid memory tall.
I did get a dose of kid memory tall once though.
When I was a young boy - maybe 6 or 7 so - my best friend and I used to go play in the large field next to our street. There was this HUGE fallen tree we used to climb to the top of.
Flash forward a bunch of years and as an adult I'm visiting my old town. The field is now a housing tract but his mom takes me over to my old school. She had convinced them to save the old tree as a playground piece. I recognize the tree from the image burned in my brain from all those days of climbing on it. Except as an adult I realize it isn't nearly as tall as my little kid brain thought it was. I could just about reach the highest point from the ground - maybe 7 or 8 feet tops. I kind of lol'd at that.
