The show is based on America in a post nuclear war time.
Thats why things are all barren and funny.
Also, if you also watch Regular Show it was written based on two characters tripping acid.
Gotta Looove Cartoon Network. LOL

It's also in Los Angeles as you can see in the episode "Simon and Marcy" they pass through a dried up Los Angeles river.

I learned that awhile back about Adventure Time! and thought it was very cool.
