[«Horunka Forest»]

The monster showed indifference to the young man's determination, seeing him only as a target that was to be attacked. Though he was somewhat quick, the «Little Nepent» was faster in its attacks, lashing with its twin vines. Though he managed to lessen the direct contact with smart evasion, he was still taking damage at an alarming rate. He wasn't able to outmaneuver the monster, tank the blows, or spot some weak point, however. With each drop in his health meter, he was growing more desperate to win. With his options and HP dwindling, Keiyo forwent any pretense of strategy, and instead charged through the blows, swinging his sword wildly to hopefully deflect a stray attack. By some measure of luck, he came within striking range of the large creature. At this point, the swordsman held nothing back. His sword was blazing with a familiar blue light, and Keiyo proceeded to butcher the «Little Nepent» with wild swings, as fast as his hands could move. Their HP bars were practically even, despite the level gap. "One hit! One more hit!" Thundered through his mind as he gripped the hilt of his sword with both hands, and swung with all his might.

The monster's vine came around and tore a damage line down Keiyo's back before the sword connected. His health bar dropped to zero, and in an instant his vision turned to black. The message 'You are dead' was displayed in red in front of him briefly, before robbing him of the rest of his senses. His body exploded into prismatic shards.
(OOC: I'll make my post look a little better when I get home later tonight.)

[«Starting City»]

A small screen appears before his eyes.

"Would you like to complete the quest 'Delivery for the Baker'?"

Two small buttons hang below the screen as if asking to be pushed. 'Yes' and 'No'. His finger raises slowly up to the yes button and pushes it in. The words "Quest complete" replace the previous screen to show him of his job well done on his recent quest.

"Maaaan, this pop-up screen sure is going to get hard to get used to" He spoke with a small sigh closing out of the quest completed screen. His fingers trace the air in front of him messing around with the in game options menu. Moving in between each and every other option available to him. One being the equipment screen, the next being quest logs, party info, and then finally what he was looking for, inventory. He hit another small button and all the items in his current inventory were listed. Clicking upon the one called 'Strategy guide' a small book appeared out of thin air and into his hands. Flipping through the pages he was looking for what his next agenda would be. "Quests in towns, monsters, joining parties, joining guilds, fighting floor bosses." He muttered under his breath as he walked through the starting town trying to make heads or tails of everything in this book. He was new to MMOs. Hearing stories from time to time on people taking down huge dragons, fighting evil wizards and demons. It was something he wanted to be apart of, but everything was still so foreign to him.

He had already been outside of town once to give fighting monsters a shot. It ended with him getting sent firmly right back to the starting area once his health had hit zero after a short amount of time. "I should have picked something else besides a small dagger as a weapon" Another sigh escaped his lips as he spoke "How am I supposed to be a hero with such a small weapon? I thought it would be cool to be the fast and quick type of guy. . .But it's a lot harder since it is like I am actually fighting." You could see a sad look form on his face. He didn't think it would be this hard to start up in an MMO like this one, and when he was invited to it. He thought it was finally his chance. But with his confidence slowly fading away, his chances at sticking with this game are fading with it.

For Keiyo, there was nothing but his thoughts. The world and everything about it had been ripped away from him. He was a consciousness drifting through infinite darkness. And within that vast expanse of nothingness and introspection, a single word defined the young man to himself in his entirety: Failure. He wanted to be angry at his incompetence, or sad about his weakness, or just some manner of feeling, but he couldn't summon anything. He felt empty and broken. For a time, he thought that he really was dead, and this was his punishment. This was the price of failure. This is what he deserved.

After a moment, however, the world seemed to fade back into existence. His senses returned, and he was whole again. He stood on a platform in a large, quiet room. The swordsman took a moment to take in his surroundings, and guessed that this was the «Room of Resurrection», meaning that he was back in «Starting City».

A slow breath escaped the swordsman. He ran a hand through his thick white hair, then started down the steps and through the hallway. Each step echoed from the far walls and high ceiling, and with it there was a certain weight that bore down on Keiyo. It was a reminder of his mortality. His shortcomings. How pitiful he felt. By the time he stepped through the grand entrance of the «Black Iron Palace» and back into the heart of the city, he felt as though these thoughts and feelings were bound to him like a ball and chain, as a burden he now had to carry. "Damn it." He said in a quiet, hollow way.

"What do I do now?" The swordsman wondered whilst he wandered the city. A part of him strongly wanted to tear across the land and get back to the forest, but a more sensible part of him knew it was pointless. The «Little Nepant» would just shred him again. Another part of him wanted to log out now and put all this behind him, but the feeling of cowardice associated with that act was an even larger burden in his mind. Everything simply deepened his current melancholy. Why did he even care so much about a game?

Keiyo flipped through his strategy guide again, looking at the details of the quest. When he checked the bit of information about the monster, all he could do was sigh at himself. The «Little Nepant» was level 3, so of course it had pummeled him. He had been so caught up in the situation that he hadn't even bothered to think. The young man gently beat his fist against his forehead for being so ignorant. What now, then? Would he wait a few more hours on a bench until he clocked enough hours and then go home? That was his plan from the start, so falling back to it wouldn't be so bad. During his indecision, his mind couldn't help but drift to a memory. An old, old memory, one that he could never let go. The sight of a little girl being wheeled into an operation room. The incomprehensible, berating screams of his parents. A feeling of emptiness and confusion. Keiyo could feel his teeth being clenched like a vice as the scene replayed over and over, and only quelled when his present emotions managed to smother it. "I won't give up. I can't. I just have to be stronger. If I'm strong enough, I can overcome anything." He snarled within his head. He took off sprinting for the city gates once more, eager to get back on the field. He had work to do.

[The Fields]

An hour ticked by in «New Aincrad» with players going about their business as usual. Some were more focused than others, wanting to get ahead and get a fatter paycheck, but in that time, there was one who arguably worked harder than the others. Keiyo didn't stop to look at his loot screen, to recover his health, or even really look at his HP bar for that matter. He was unleashing «Sword Skills» on «Frenzy Boars» left and right. Their bodies exploded around him like a constant hail, some having only just respawned long enough to see the familiar blue glow of a sword tearing through them. The fatigue was steadily building in his body, slowing his movements and making his weapon seem heavier, but he refused to outright stop. He was a madman on a mission, for reasons no one could really discern. It wasn't until the hour had finally passed that Keiyo finally paused in his pig genocide. It was more from the fact that he found his legs not being able to properly support his body than it was the amount of time, however.

The swordsman stabbed his blade into the ground, and helped himself to a seat on the grass. It was late evening now, which meant the artificial sun was bathing the floating castle in a warm, golden-orange light. It made for a pretty scene, though Keiyo admittedly did not take much notice of it. His mind was too occupied with the fact that he didn't have the stamina to keep going for much longer. A glance at his status menu revealed that he was only a few sword slashes away from leveling up, but his arms and legs felt like lead. He could even see a «Frenzy Boar» just a stone's throw away, taunting him with its very being. A slow breath escaped the young man whilst he rubbed his eyes. "If only I was stronger." He mumbled. It was the story of his life.

"School takes way too long." A young man grumbled. He kicked off his shoes and proceeded to lay down on his 'work bed'. It wasn't particularly comfortable, but at least it was softer than the floor. He reached for his headset and slipped it on. He took a moment to make sure he wasn't forgetting anything important, then took a deep breath, exhaled, and closed his eyes. "Link start."

As Keiyo opened his eyes, he barely needed time to collect himself. He knew where he was and what he had been planning to do. The time seemed to be in the afternoon, so everything was bright and vibrant with life and activity. It was perfect. With little hesitation, the young man drew his sword, spotted a boar, and charged it. The beast was caught completely unawares from the back, and barely had time to squeal as Keiyo's sword sliced through its body. The image of the monster fazed slightly before being turned to fragments. As the loot screen popped up, a soft, golden aura enveloped the young man's body. In the corner of his vision, he also saw a shift in the numbers present. He had done it. He had reached level two. Alongside that, a prompt appeared to allow him to invest a point in either his «Strength» or «Agility». He didn't linger on the question for long, and chose «Agility» in whimsy. Even with the added health and slight boost in his speed, though, he still didn't think it was going to be enough to take on a «Little Nepant». Some new gear would likely help out, but based on the prices he had seen yesterday, that was going to take a lot more work. Keiyo eyed another «Frenzy Boar» and gave his sword a spin. The day was young.

As the boar was finished off, Keiyo checked his EXP progression. As to be expected, if he stayed at boars, this was going to be a long endeavor. He needed to go after some stronger targets. He scanned through his «Strategy Guide» to see where he should head next.

The young man really had no initial intention of delving any deeper into this game. It served him no purpose, and it seemed like a waste of time, yet here he was frantically looking for answers and trying to push himself further. He had no idea what it was that he was slowly becoming involved in, where it would take him, or why. All that mattered was what was happening here and now. Even as he tore through monsters, his thoughts remained on the quest, and of the woman with her sick daughter. "It's not too late. I can still save her. I know I can."

«Soil Puppets» and «Willful Rams» seemed to be ideal targets for someone of his level, and once he discerned where they could be found, it was no surprise that he was off and running. His long legs gave him great stride, and while his real body wasn't in particularly great shape, that didn't matter here. He felt healthy and stronger than he had ever been in his entire life. This was the way he wished he always felt. There were some sullen thoughts associated with that notion, but he stowed them away. He had spent enough time worrying about what he couldn't do - now was the time to focus on what he was capable of.

«Soil Puppets» were a closer, more reliable target. The rams seemed to spawn in pretty random areas. Keiyo had the feeling that they probably had something to do with a quest, or had some useful crafting material. Putting that aside, he encountered the first of what he expected to be many familiar targets. The tall golem staggered toward the swordsman in the same brainless manner as they had the last time he had faced them. With knowledge of their glaring weaknesses, as well as how to handle multiple spawns, this was going to make for relatively easy work.

While the young man landed a series of blows on the monster, he had a strange feeling about him the whole time. He couldn't quite place it beyond some sort of unease, like there was something he was ignoring. Something... important. But what?

Mike had already missed his first day of 'work'. Despite his eagerness to try out his first experience with the VRMMO, his doctor had forbidden it until more tests could be run. It had only been a few years since the car accident that had robbed him of the use of his legs and the loss still weighed greatly on Mike. This combined with the move from America to Japan had put him in a dark mood and his father hoped that this opportunity would help vent his frustrations and help him focus. In preparation of his first full dive experience, he read up all he could about the nervegear and the generations that came afterward. Because of his condition Evo Laboratories set up a Medicuboid just for him.

The big day had arrived as he pushed his wheelchair into the main floor of the building that was his new place of employment. After checking in with the front desk he was escorted to his work station and given a tutorial on what he would be doing. Once he was situated in the Medicuboid he initiated the system and felt himself falling away. With a mental slap he was suddenly standing in the Town of Beginnings with a large text in the sky welcoming him to Sword Art Online! It took Mike a few minutes to get familiar with the system but soon he, like many others, had their strategy book in hand. Making for the first area where it said <Frenzied Boars> were located at, he hefted the iron axe in his hands as he decided on how to initiate his first combat.

The swordsman managed to keep himself focused for long enough to finish off his target. Keiyo lowered his blade and glanced around curiously, unable to shake the feeling he had. He didn't understand what was bothering him so much - was he being watched? It didn't seem like it. He wanted to ignore it and simply keep grinding, but he couldn't get it off his mind. While keeping his weapon in hand, Keiyo began to pace around the general area, casting his eyes in every direction, waiting for... something. Whatever it was.

The only thing that truly divided paranoia from perception was the cleverness of the individual. The masked person watched the snowy-haired swordsman as he glanced here and there from the safety of a shady tree, thick with leaves. The robed one tilted their head, presumably in curiosity, as it took in the shiftiness of the man in the field. What was he thinking? What would he do if he found what he was looking for? What exactly was he capable of? So many questions, but no answers. After another moment of observation, the person descended from the tree with the grace and silence of a sinking shadow, then vanished further into the thicket. Whoever they were, they had a definite interest in at least a few of the players. As for why that was, only time would tell.

Gradually, the feeling of being watched faded from the swordsman's senses. Perhaps he was just too worked up, and his own mind was playing tricks on him. It was impossible to tell. The young man ran a hand through his thick hair and exhaled at his own stress and foolishness. He had enough to deal with as it was without going crazy. Putting the odd feeling aside, he refocused on the situation at hand. His experience bar was still quite meager, so it was back to work as far as he was concerned. A trio of golems had spawned not far away. Those would make for a nice chunk of EXP, and a bit challenge to boot. With his blade at the ready, he charged into the fray once more.

For some reason he was just not able to get the hang of the combat system in the game. Nothing he read could prepare him for understanding the rhythm and flow of the system, and more importantly how to operate his sword skills. Deciding to take a small break Mike found a place cleared of mobs and looked out at the horizon of the game. It was amazing to think that this world that he seemed to be experiencing with his body was actually nothing but electronic data. For the first time since the accident he actually felt a sense of enjoyment and being completely pain free. Looking off to his left it seemed that the mobs had started to change from boars to some kind of wolf. Deciding to venture in that direction he stood up while accessing his item storage. At a casual pace he walked down the road and consumed one of the few healing items he had started out with.

As he logged on he checked to see if they hadn't messed up and deleted his character on accident after the connection issue. He played for as long as he could before his game suddenly disconnected. The lab techs couldn't even explain it so they sent him home, and when he came back the next day they gave him a different chair. Now he checked if his character was working properly before setting out. Thanks to playing many other MMO's, he was able to level up twice before his connection was cut, and he intended to get even further this time. Now he had a better sword, some new gauntlets and shoulder pads. Nothing great, but it increased his armor without lowering his stamina, letting him fight at the same speed as he usually does. Looking around the town, he decided on a path and started sprinting down, towards the forest surrounding the town.
