The young lady had thought it fit to walk closer to the person, since having a shouting match to converse was a tad strange and impolite. "What? No, I just wanted to get your attention." She responded, after coming within talking distance. "I haven't seen anyone out this far, so I wanted to see what you were up to." The lass spoke in a casual, friendly manner. She paid little mind to her surroundings, and her sword arm hung loosely at her side - she couldn't be any less prepared for a sudden attack. She treated the situation as though she were merely talking to someone on the street. "Oh, I'm Eclair, by the way."

"Who knows!" Keiyo exclaimed, as he narrowly evaded another swipe from the wolf. The attack had left the beast vulnerable, and had the swordsman in a favorable position. He finished off the beast with a clean swipe and a hail of prism-like fragments followed. "I didn't think we'd find aggressive monsters so soon. They really just throw you into this whole deal." He commented as he put his weapon away. It seemed like there was something new around every corner with this game. He hadn't been in the game for even a day yet, but that was beside the point. "How long do you think it'll take to reach the mountains, anyway? They look pretty far."

"I'm not sure," Geki admitted. "Either way, we still need Okiru and his new friend to find us first." Before they could traverse any further, Geki and Keiyo were suddenly confronted by another pair of wolves. "...These guys sure are persistent though."

"He said he was out training, so we'll probably meet him along the way." Keiyo remarked. When the next pair of wolves spawned, he was starting to get the impression that sheathing one's weapon would end up becoming a bit of a luxury. Out came his «Iron Sword» once more. "Same as last time, I guess." The swordsman said, though the monsters were already making the choice for them, each taking a different target. Given that the fight was fresh in his memory, Keiyo went through the same motions, but he needed to act faster. He evaded the beast's fangs and claws, and retaliated with swift, precise strikes. In what felt like a single breath, one of the targets was reduced to glittering pieces.

Geki and Aiyasa presumably handled the straggler well enough. They must have been lagging afterward, though, as they had become immobile. Figuring he wouldn't make too much ground before they caught up, Keiyo put away his sword and continued making his way toward the distant mountains.

Having some time to himself, and with a lull in the spawn of wolves, the swordsman felt free to let his mind wander a bit while his legs carried him forward. Most people were content to simply look around at a game like this, with all its oddities and quirks, and mark it up to being an unfinished product, or an interesting design choice. Keiyo was not so easily convinced, however. He didn't consider himself to be a conspiracy theorist, but things didn't really seem to add up in his mind. The game was indeed missing a lot of common place features seen in other VRMMOs, but given that Evo Labs was able to fund having a building full of people with stations for performing a «Full Dive», they definitely had money to throw around, and he was rather certain that they would have the capability to develop a state-of-the-art game. To the best of his knowledge, the platform that most VRMMOs were based on, «The Seed», had a lot of prepackaged features that had been expanded upon and widely distributed over time, so why would Evo Labs choose to ignore these? It was very strange.

With one sword skill, Geki was able to take out the second Dire Wolf. He was really getting the hang of this. And unless he was mistaken, Keiyo wasn't doing so bad either. Once that was done, Geki sheathed his sword and continued toward the mountains. A glance around revealed there were no more wolves at the moment.

((Aye, it's no biggie. Such is the nature of RPs. Thanks for joining in all the same!))

While the swordsman walked, he opened up his map just to pass the time. He noted that most of it was darkened and invisible, with only the places he had been to showing further detail about the landscape. To try and determine how long this trip would take, he did some math, albeit with heavy assumptions. Based on the distance he had covered, the time he had spent walking, and how far away the mountains seemed, he estimated that reaching the mountains would likely take another hour. "Huh. That's actually not much." Thinking it over some more, he figured that, even with generous breaks and sleep, it would only take perhaps a day and a half, possibly less, to map out the entire floor. Though the landscape looked daunting, he supposed it was a willful illusion.

More walking. It wasn't terribly hard on Keiyo's body, he was used to at least some traveling in the real world, but with a somewhat sparse landscape, it was mentally fatiguing. He had taken to pulling out his weapon and swinging it around to help get used to what he figured would be a common practice. The system was pretty generous in activating «Sword Skills», where exact stances, angles, or whatever, weren't entirely necessary. The young man found that it seemed to respond more to his 'thoughts', if that made any sense. He wanted to perform a «Horizontal», and even with rather sloppy movement, the game complied, moving him through the swift, slicing motion. He found it kind of interesting. "If someone could visualize a battle really well, they could probably win a battle easily without having ever tried fighting before. I think." Keiyo mused.

It felt like a fair amount of time had passed. Keiyo looked over his shoulder, but there was no one in sight. He looked at his map again and there were no markers, so he could only assume that everyone had logged off for some reason. With a shrug, the swordsman dropped from the party and was out on his own again. Technically he had no reason to be going to the mountain anymore, but he had no direction regardless, so he figured he would keep heading that way and see what transpired. Who knows, he might come across a stray quest or another player to pass the time with.

Another ten or so minutes passed peacefully. Keiyo had even taken to whistling a tune, since there was nothing else to do. The serenity of his little journey was thrown off kilter, though, when there was a sudden flash of light in front of him. There stood a tall, lanky, mud-brown creature, with a red symbol smeared on its chest. A health bar appeared, along with the name «Soil Puppet». Because he was so out of it, it took Keiyo a moment to realize that a monster was towering over him. He barely had time to dodge before one of its arms swung out to try and smack him in the head. The young man unsheathed his sword once more, and he began to clear his head to face the new opponent.

The «Soil Puppet» didn't seem to be particularly fast, and its movements lacked any sort of thought or grace. It swung its arms around freely as it tried to hits things, much like, to the credit of its name, a puppet on strings. The only remarkable thing there was to say about the creature was that its slow movements and lack of features made it a bit creepy, like a mannequin.

The tall creature took another swing at Keiyo with its left arm. Keiyo raised his sword to block it, but hadn't expected the sheer amount of strength behind the attack. The swordsman was easily battled aside, knocking him down on his hands and knees. He scrambled away in a rather ungraceful manner to regain his composure. The young man noted that, despite having stopping the attack with his weapon, he had still taken some damage. It seemed that blocking an attack only reduced damage, rather than negating it. He kept that in mind as he righted himself to face the monster properly.

Since the creature wasn't fast moving, he figured it was wise to take the time to learn its movements. It didn't seem to do much besides shamble forward and swing wildly. Feeling a little more confident now, Keiyo decided to retaliate. He sprint around to its unguarded backside, and began slashing away. Its health bar dropped in tiny increments, so it seemed to have rather high defense. Still, the swordsman didn't let up. He kept circling the enemy and hacking away, taking down its HP bit by bit. "This is pretty easy. Wonder why these weren't the first things I encountered." Keiyo wondered. Suddenly, as if the game could read this thoughts, another «Soil Puppet» spawned a few feet away, then began to shuffle forward as well. "... Ah. Damn."

The addition of just one extra enemy made the battle notably more difficult. Every time Keiyo saw an opening on the original target, he had to scurry away to avoid being attacked by the other «Soil Puppet». He scowled as he kept moving in a circle around his opponents. "How am I supposed to deal with this?! This is so ******** stupid!" Odds were that he was supposed to have other people around to help, but that wasn't a luxury he had right this moment. Would they really design the game to be like that at such an early stage? It was completely unreasonable, but it was a right pain.

Another minute of useless strafing ticked by. Given how slow they were, it would be easy enough to run away. Like many gamers, though, Keiyo felt some sort of ingrained 'need' to kill them, simply because they were there. With no other ideas coming to mind, he simply backed off and watched how they moved, like how he had done so at first. The swordsman assumed there was nothing else to gain from this, but as he stood and observed, he noticed a small gap between the enemies as they walked side by side - just big enough for someone to slip through. With no other ideas coming to him, he figured it was worth trying. He held his sword behind his back and in toward his body so that it wouldn't be in the way, then bolted forward. When he came within range the monsters swung in unison, but Keiyo slipped past them easily. Now, like before, their backs were exposed to him. A small grin crossed his face as his sword ignited with light, and he unleashed hell on them.

After a few moments of exploiting the weakness he had discovered, the «Soil Puppets» were nothing but fragments and a spoils menu. Keiyo sheathed his sword with a fist pump. Even if they were relatively simple enemies, he felt some small measure of success in his analytical and strategic abilities. This seemed like a game where every enemy had a weak point, it just took a keen eye to find it.

After spending some more time on the road, Keiyo finally found himself in a town called «Tolbana». It was a quaint place, and definitely less to take in compared to the gigantic «Starting City». He figured that he could use a break after all the wandering and fighting, so he found himself a bench, had a seat, and simply relaxed. As he let out a sigh, he nearly forgot that he was even playing a game. He had grown so accustomed to the status indicator in the corner of his vision, all the traveling, and the monster fighting that it simply felt natural. He wasn't a heavy gamer by any stretch, but he wondered if that was how game addiction started. It was a weird, slightly unsettling sensation. Still, he wasn't anywhere close to that, and even if he was getting some amusement, he kept his priorities in check. He was here for the money, and didn't really care about anything else.

The NPCs moved about like a person would in real life. They had places they were going, things to discuss, and simple pleasures to enjoy. It was amusing to see the amount of detail that went into something so basic. Who would ever follow an NPC around to see what they did in the run of a day? Keiyo supposed that such things were just the developers having a bit of fun. There was always some manner of easter egg or amusing dialog in games from certain NPCs for those that looked hard enough. A lazy grin met Keiyo's lips as he entertained the thought of looking for just such a thing if he ever found himself that bored.

As ten minutes ticked by, Keiyo wondered what he should do, now that he was on his own. He supposed he could go out into the field and start hacking away at stuff to get a boost in his paycheck. He could also try looking for some other quest to pass the time. The swordsman pulled open his menu and retrieved his strategy guide, and the thumbed through it until he found the section about quests. Most of them seemed pretty basic, though most of the rewards didn't have anything that particularly appealed to him. The only one that featured a «Straight Sword» was «The Secret Medicine of the Forest», and that was in a whole other town. Still, there was not much else to do around here, so maybe it was worth a shot. He returned the book to his inventory, then stood, stretched, oriented his direction, and began making his way to the edge of town to seek out «Horunka».

It was a bit of a shame to leave «Tolbana» so soon. It seemed like a rather nice place. Still, he wouldn't get anywhere by hanging around a town and looking at the sights. Keiyo reached the edge of town, oriented himself a bit, then set off for «Horunka». He was barely out of town for two minutes before a «Dire Wolf» spawned to challenge him. Given his growing expertise with his weapon and the system, though, the monster was hardly a threat now. After dodging the beast's swipes and unleashing two «Slant» attacks of his own, the threat was no more. Though he had only been in several battles up to this point, Keiyo was already finding the whole process to be rather natural. He didn't have to really think about the encounters, he just went with the flow. It was fun.

More traveling ensued, as seemed to be the case quite often in «Neo Aincrad». The young man wondered if there were mounts or something, and even flipped through his guide book to see. It seemed that there were, but they were an expensive luxury. Every little thing in this game really required a lot of effort, as though it was meant to be a job. In this particular setting it made sense, given that he was being paid, but would casual players really be attracted to something like this? He supposed that if they marketed the game really well, or introduced a bunch of new features to draw in the crowd, then it might work. He really didn't understand what went through the minds of marketers and developers.

[«Horunka»]

The trip to «Horunka» only ended up taking roughly half an hour, if that. It was an even smaller, more serene village than «Tolbana» had been, tucked into a lush forest. Had he not read about it in the «Strategy Guide», Keiyo probably never would have found the settlement in the first place. It was just a bunch of log cabins all bunched together, with faint, silver plumes of smoke curling from the chimneys. While he had enjoyed every place he had come across so far (which, to be fair, was only two) for different reasons, the swordsman thought that he liked this one the best. It was remote, quiet, and had a comforting feel, the kind of place a person would want to escape to in a hectic life.

The swordsman wandered around a little bit, seeing what there was to see. Most of the NPCs were simple and friendly, having little to say other than commenting on things such as the weather or the dangers of the land. When he came to the last house, however, he believed that he may have found the beginning to the quest that the book had mentioned.

"Would you like some tea, traveler?" The NPC asked. She was so kind and friendly in her mannerisms that Keiyo felt that he could mistake them for a real person. It felt a bit weird to be talking to a simulated person like this, but maybe it would be a bit fun to roleplay a bit. There was no one watching anyway.
"That's very generous of you. I would love some." Keiyo replied in an overly formal way. With a polite bow, the woman went to her kitchen for a moment to bring some out. As she did so, Keiyo could hear coughing coming from the next room over. It lasted a while, and sounded pained. When the NPC woman returned, Keiyo said "Is someone sick?"
"My daughter, yes." She replied with a sigh and a frown. "She's fallen terribly ill and the healers cannot help her. I'm told the only way to cure her is to retrieve a certain substance from monsters in the forest, but they are far too strong. All we can do is keep her comfortable and... just hope for the best."
Keiyo had a somewhat intimidating appearance in the game, being quite tall and having sharp features, but when the woman spoke, it was easy to see how crestfallen he looked. Despite being a game, the situation really seemed to tug at his heartstrings. The concept of quests, gameplay, rewards, and everything else faded from his mind as he rose to his feet in a flash. "Tell me what you need. I will get it, I promise you." He said with power and sincerity. His eyes burned with determination.
"Would you really?" The woman asked, clasping her hands together with a hopeful smile spreading across her face. "Oh, adventurer, we would be eternally grateful if you did. Thank you so much."
A prompt appeared before Keiyo at the NPC's words. "Begin «The Secret Medicine of the Forest» Quest?" It read. He pushed the accept button without a moment's hesitation. Virtual or not, he was now determined to help this woman and her daughter.

[«Horunka Forest»]

As Keiyo made his way into the forest, he had a white-knuckle grip on his sword and a glare that could start a wildfire. For someone that had been so relaxed to the point of being bored inside the game's environment, it was a startling difference to see him emanating such determination. And yet, it was a look that was far more suiting of his avatar. He was not suited to smiling and laughing, but instead approaching a situation with nothing being held back. This was his true, obsessive nature bleeding from his real personality.

It only took some light searching to find what he had been looking for, a creature known as «Little Nepent». It was a large, grotesque plant monster, with a white 'body', bright red lips, impeccably sharp teeth, a lolling, slobbering tongue, and long vines that it used to strike and constrict its opponents with. Such a sight was likely meant to induce fear, or at the very least unease, but the sight of the abomination gave Keiyo an odd sense of relief. "I just have to kill this, get the drop, and then the girl will be saved." He thought to himself as he raised his sword. "I'll save her. She'll get better. She won't be in danger. She won't die."

The monster detected Keiyo, and let out a gurgled snarl as it began to approach him. Though not particularly fast on its roots, the «Little Nepent» made up for it in speed and reach with its 'arms'. It lashed out with one of its vines, filling the air with the sound of a whip-like crack. It had caught Keiyo by surprise, and left a thin damage line from just under Keiyo's eye, all the way to the side of his neck. He staggered back a bit in shock. It was such a small attack, and yet, with a glance at his health, it dealt a fifth of his total health. A clean, direct hit would likely deal as much as a third, potentially. With fear, rage, and purpose pumping through his body, the swordsman howled and charged forward. He wanted, no, needed to win.
