Malik
════════════════════════════════════════════

He had just finished eating when something disturbed the surface of the lake. It came up as a spire of water at first, then branched out to a slightly humanoid shape. Malik found this very odd, elementals would appear like this if you could actually get them to appear but would usually not claim areas or protect things. In his experience spirits that would protect places and claim domains had typically adopted a form like an animal or a human. Perhaps this was a young spirit that hadn't decided on a form. Best to start, he stood before the being wand in hand. "I am Malik son of Kithon, I am a mage, and I have only taken what I and Silivene need. I have no desire to over hunt or disturb the balance of this forest." While he was talking he was weaving a spell of detection, something felt off and he was certain his spell would show him how. His spell spread out of the end of his wand like a kudzu plant. Constantly splitting off and spreading out. About the time that he finished talking he had found something. Tendrils of magic flowing into the being from another part of the forest. Of all the things he could do the thing he thought of was a ward. He would protect the being from outside influence. He wrapped the lake and himself in a ward that would stop water magic from influencing the area, or just hinder it if the magic was strong enough.

Master Leiva
[The Atheneum, Medical Wing]

The master was being meticulous with her work, with draining blood and closing off wounds as best as she could. She kept an especially close lookout for bone slivers that could do more damage - any she found, she removed and set aside. Bone marrow had a number of uses, so even in this situation, she didn't want anything to go to waste. While she was working, she noted the slight elevation in Lark's heart rate, and the body's response as a result. For now it was nothing to worry about, just so long as he remained unconscious. "Almost done. Hang in there." She said softly, even if the words fell on deaf ears.

"The damage is done!" The aquatic being screeched, and leaned forward slightly to loom over the young man and his partner. "Flee this place now, or you shall experience my wrath!"

Things seemed to be going smoothly. It was taking the entirety of Kreiva's concentration to keep up the charade, but she guessed it would only need to last a couple minutes before she scared off the stragglers. But then, without warning, the plan took a turn for the worse. The natural mana she had been using in the surrounding area was suddenly turned off like a faucet. Already she could feel her water puppet losing its form and becoming unstable. If she burned the mana in her own body then she could maintain it a bit longer, but even a minute would be a Herculean effort on her part. [********! They can use magic!!" The witch cursed in her mind. Either the boy or the dragon must have thought to use a seal. But her plan had been flawless! There was nothing to suggest that the water spirit was a fake! This couldn't go on any longer. She relinquished the control of both her spells. [******** paranoid pieces of s**t!" She spat.

Back at the lake, the water spirit began to sway, and its various body parts 'melted' back into formless water. Then, in an instant, the spire simply fell apart, and the water splashed back into the lake. Besides the ripples on the surface, there was nothing left of it.

Kreiva's plan was a flop. She had to get out of here and find somewhere else to stake out the arsonist before either of those two discovered her. She was confident in her abilities, but even she knew that battling another caster was unwise without knowing about their abilities. Working quickly as she could, the witch rubbed out the chalk glyph on the rock and flipped it over, then emptied the wax bowl of its water, and then stuffed whatever materials were left over in her bag. Besides an unassuming little hole in the ground, there was nothing left to suggest that anything had happened here. The blonde girl then got to her feet and took off running.

tab Holding his head in an attempt to order all the information he just received, Lark viewed the events as they unfolded in front of his spinning eyes. As his previous self thrashed while his father mercilessly strangled him, something in the small boy's stable mentality seemed to crack. The young Lark abruptly seized struggling when his innocent, pitiful eyes transferred to a more ferocious, cold aura. Without warning, the child snatched the metallically-embroidered sheath belonging to his mother's broadsword and drove the thing with full force into the man's head. The sudden blow to his cranium caused him to stumble, allowing enough time for the tiny boy to swipe the weapon and escape to the town. Had Lark's consciousness been able to piece together data at the moment, he would've realized that this was the age he developed his alternate personality and how it came to be. This would also very much explain the strange ideas others have been coming up with concerning Lark and a disorder of some sort.

tab These all came to pass while Master Leiva had been meticulously working on his wound. When she whispered to him about the surgery nearing its end, thinking that he couldn't hear a sound, her gentle words somehow wormed their way into his mind, urging him out of his slumber. As his eyelids twitched, a shocking pain pulsated from the area she was operating on and his face contorted. Wanting to know what in the world was causing such a horrible sensation, his lids inched open, fighting to suppress the drowsiness that threatened to shut down his awareness once more. Lark groaned softly as his unfocused eyes landed upon the master.

"Well that's enough cloud-watching!" Cael said to himself as he sprung to his feet on the roof. He looked down to see students still walking about the field and through some of the windows in the halls. He didn't feel like doing anything for the moment but thought about socializing to pass the time. He looked about but didn't see anyone that piqued his interest. He climbed down from the roof and started for the market, hoping to run into somebody interested there he could talk to while also dealing with his food. He passed numerous students with their dragons next to them, or on their shoulders or holding them. They made him wonder where Sylvar had gone to since he left.

Malik watched it as the spirit threatened him. He was trying to understand why a spirit would be so possessive of one animal. And he was practically pleading in his mind that Silivene would help him. But Silivene did nothing and said nothing to him. Then the spirit started to loose its shape and then suddenly it fell apart and returned to the lake. He released the ward around him and started to weave the detection spell to find the spirit again. He didn't do much before Silivene interrupted him. You won't find anything, there was never a spirit there. "You knew, why didn't you say anything?" Malik said a little irritated and a bit surprised. I always know I just don't tell you, you learn more that way. If Silivene's mental voice could be described as any smug or sassy.

"Can you find what made that fake spirit?" Malik asked.
I can.
"Then go and find it. I'm going to find that girl, do you think she will be safe?"

Silivene roused from her resting place and took flight in the time it took Malik to clean his plate and utensils with fire and put everything, except his wand into his bag. Then he walked into the woods in the direction the girl went last he saw. Silivene was in the sky before she answered Malik, I'm sure she is.

Silivene could have found the girl very easily if she wanted to, since she could easily spot deer and rabbits from the sky how hard would one of the only two humans in the forest be to find. And even if she hadn't her young partner that they were going to be looking for the same person after he said he was going to look for her. Silivene would do something she rarely ever did with humans other then her partner, she would talk to this girl directly.

Listen to me little witch, Silivene said through her mental speech, in a tone that could be called scolding or motherly, Yes I know of your magic. I also know you carry something with you that is why you tried to drive that boy away. But why, for solitude, to protect it from him or him from it. He might be able to help you if you mean him no harm. I'll give you the choice if you want to be found. You can send up a signal into the sky, it is a simple spell in many kinds of magic. If you want to be found make it blue, if not make it orange. If you do not respond we will have this conversation face to face.

Master Leiva
[The Atheneum, Medical Wing]

Everything seemed to be taken care of at this point. The bones were set, all the dangerous fragments had been removed, and the wounds were treated to for what was necessary. The master breathed a sigh of relief. The extraordinary recovery ability of people with dragon links was both a blessing and a curse in their own right. They healed incredibly fast, that was a given, but that also meant that things like broken bones had to be tended to very quickly, or else they wouldn't mend properly. Being brought into the medical wing just to have bones broken and reset was one of the worst parts of the practice. Still, it was all for the sake of health, and she would focus on her duties regardless of the circumstances.

Master Leiva was taken by some surprise when she felt Lark shifting, even more so to see his consciousness returning. She had hoped he would be out for at least another hour with the dosage she had given him. She could just give him some more and knock him back out, but she was very cautious when it came to over-medication, generally under only the most extreme circumstances. Immunity to effects and medicinal poisoning were very dangerous. "Try not to move. I'm going to close you up." She said, and was already hurrying to remove the pins keeping the incision open, and to sew the student back up. "I can't give you anything for the pain just yet, so you'll have to really grit your teeth and bear it."

A woman with raven hair, silver eyes, and pale skin drifted this way and that down the main path of the business district. Though she weaved in a seemingly unsteady manner, like a drunkard, a keen observer could see that she had an odd grace in her movements, moving fluidly like the water and the wind. The distant look in her eyes definitely suggested that she was not entirely there, however. Her head was in the clouds and beyond. The stupid grin on her face helped to further it.

As she bobbed around in her drifting state, she passed by a young man and nearly bumped into him in the process. A mere hairsbreadth had separated them. It was enough of an invasion of personal space to usually prompt a person to apologize, but she carried on as though she hadn't noticed.

__________Kreiva Ruskilitzer_________

[ - - - Unnamed Northern Woods - - - ]

((The third paragraph is all that really matters, if this seems to be lengthy.))

The young witch's chest heaved and her heart hammered. She was not cut out for physical exertion, and even a little bit already had her puffing. It was a wonder she hadn't tripped over a root or something. The woods were too confined to use her broom, but even if she did manage to get to an open space to mount it, she would have to take to the sky at some point, and then she would definitely be seen. Kreiva didn't consider herself well known, but her figure and her broom were rather unmistakable. Having the masters chasing her down on a claim of attempted assault or something was the last thing she needed.

Just when she thought she might be in the clear and could catch her breath, a presence and a voice burst into her head. If she had the air in her lungs, she probably would have let out a yelp. Instead she did a sharp intake of breath and came to a dead stop. Her lungs still ached for oxygen and couldn't help but keep taking it in. But in hearing directly with her mind, she voice was as clear and as loud as though they were speaking right into her ear. Process of elimination based on what the voice said certainly suggested it was the dragon from the lake, but there was no certainty.

Kreiva felt a little dizzy from the running, so her head felt light and her thoughts were sluggish. The presence sounded sincere, but how could she be certain of anything right now? While she tried to bring her mind together to think properly, a sudden chill bolted down her spine. "I know you carry something..." echoed back to her. Not only had the presence talked to her, it had probed her mind. It could be seeing through her eyes right now! She squeezed her eyes shut in an instant, covered her ears, and breathed only through her mouth. These sorts of 'attacks' had been a part of her training, and the more her senses took in, the easier it was to locate her. She had to shut out the mind reader. She could protect herself with a seal, but given that her magic was detected before, it would probably happen again. That meant she had to fall back on more basic means - her own mental defenses. She didn't know the extent of the prober's abilities, but she could still make some resistance. Kreiva first emptied her mind of all her current thoughts, letting it go still and dark. She then concentrated as best she could on picturing something, anything... she chose a rock for simplicity. "This rock is my mind. There are no thoughts. There is no Kreiva. There is only this rock." She focused on its details, its shape, texture, weight, color, anything to take away from her own mind. The purpose of this technique was to make her presence seemingly vanish.

She had no idea who the boy or the dragon were, or what they intended. All the witch knew was that they had first been a nuisance, and now they were potentially enemies. She was scared and angry, shooting first and asking questions later.

"Yep, this is nice, thanks again!" Cale said to the framer, after picking up the apples he picked. He had a small bag with him so he carried them in that, holding them over his shoulder and behind him. He started a path straight for his inn room, intending to drop them off and take the rest of the day off as a break. He forgot his plan when a woman almost bumped into him, missing by a hair. Normally he'd just ignore it, like it was someone who missed their step or something, but he took an interested in her. He started to follow her, weaving through with the path she made. He noticed she was wobbling, like some drunkard after one of his family's parties, while she was still able to walk without falling. It was like she was so happy she couldn't care less what was going on. "Hey, are you alright?" he asked, grabbing her by the shoulder to get her attention.

tab When Master Leiva instructed him to bear the pain, Lark's brain was in a state of such mass chaos that the only active senses he had were his hearing and sense of touch. The logical and comprehending portion of his mind was swamped attempting to order and understand the data it had gained from the horrifying dream as well as the present surroundings and situation. At the time, his brain unconsciously gauged the dream's data more important than his current circumstance, hindering him from being able to apprehend what the master meant. In fact, he didn't even realize it was the master speaking to him as the only thing he saw, no matter where his eyes wandered, was utter, unwavering black. Although his eyes were open and he was obviously peering at Master Leiva, one would notice he couldn't see her at all.

tab As the master began to close the slit she had made in his torso, the action sent an exploding pain to his brain. The abrupt, sharp sensation caused Lark to clench his hands into fists and let out a bone-chilling scream, one that you would hear if a young man's eye was being ruthlessly torn out of its socket. Oddly enough, his body remained still as his tortured voice echoed about the room.

tab While these events were taking place, Gure, tired of sleep, laid there, pondering what to do to pass the time. Suddenly, it remembered Arilian, the girl who possessed half a dragon's soul. Hoping she was still at Malae Lake, it took off and soon landed at its destination.

Malik continued into the woods after the girl. He had found a trail, he wasn't an expert on tracking but the prints looked like those of a human. And considering he didn't think anyone else was out here and that he hadn't left the lake until now, the track were probably the girl's. He continued on following the path as well as he could discern it. It made for slow progress because it looked like she was going fast and he could match that speed and notice the trail. "Have you seen her Silivene?" Malik said hoping for some help from her vantage point.

Up in the sky Silivene was circling the area. Waiting for the signal to come. She gave it a few minutes plenty of time if the witch were going to send a signal. It seems the young witch chose to have the conversation in person, Silivene mused to herself. Now to land, she had seen the witch already and was merely circling around to give the young lady some time to respond. She found a suitable clearing that wasn't far, at least in dragonic terms. She landed and then ran toward the girl. She was surprising quiet for her size though most dragons could be if they wanted to be. She came upon the witch swiftly. Now we are together, Silivene said with a calm telepathic voice, Now answer me this, little witch, do you intend to hurt the boy. At that moment she heard Malik speak the way she did, hearing him in her mind even though he did not speak to her with his mind. Yes, I have seen her, she responded to him.

The lady was quite content to be on her merry way, seemingly without a care in the world. She drifted with the wind as easily as a piece of paper, and in a similarly chaotic fashion. Her gliding along the breeze came to a halt when she felt a hand grip her shoulder. She glanced in the direction of her shoulder, but did not look at the person that was speaking to her. The woman's eyes stared into the distance, as though she was looking at something far reaching into the universe. "No, I'm Cecelia." She replied. Her voice was as dreamy as her mind and mannerisms seemed to be. "I don't think I look like Alright. But then, I've never seen Alright."

The master's hands worked at a blurring speed and with incredible precision. The needle was already threaded to save herself a couple of seconds, and while it needed to pierce and loop through Lark's flesh, the smoothness of her motions made it seem as though she were sewing cloth. But despite the calm of her actions, her facial expression told it all - her mouth was straight and firm, and her eyes were unblinking with a burning gaze. She didn't waver as the howls escaped the student, but hearing them seemed to deepen her demeanor.

As the needle made its final pass, Master Leiva snipped the thread and knotted both ends, along with a long, slow breath. "It's done, Student Boren. It's over. Try to relax." She said. Her features had softened once more, as much as they could at least. It seemed as though the master's normal look still had a stony look about them.

After a tense moment, Kreiva heard nothing else. Was she safe? It was impossible to tell. She maintained her focus on her 'stone mind', and gently let off her ears and opened her eyes. So long as her concentration didn't waver, she should be okay, she figured. But she was still being sought out, that much was certain, so she had to keep moving. She only accelerated up to a jog - fast enough to cover ground, but easy enough to let her lungs last.

Her plan and attempts all came crashing down when she rounded a tree and was face to face with the dragon from the lake, however. The witch went rigid with her hand held against the tree, and her legs in half-step. Now would usually be the time that a string of profanity escaped Kreiva, but given the weight of the overall situation, her tongue was still. Her concentration broke as well, letting the dragon's telepathic words flow easily through her mind again. When posed the question, the witch regained some of her sensibilities. Enough to take on a fair chunk of her usual, foul demeanor, at least. "I don't care about your boy, or you, or anyone else." She replied firmly. "I just wanted him out of the way so he wouldn't be meddling and get himself killed."
