Kate Harvey
@The Cracked Spine with Thomas
Kate could feel her hands trembling as she left the office and stepped out onto the street. She shook out her hands as she headed back towards her home and shop. She was quite disappointed that Ichabod Crane was such an a**. She had always liked the bookish character from Sleepy Hollow. He would be ruined for her now.
She was equally surprised at how charming the wolf could be when he wanted to. In all the stories of her child hood where the wolf managed to trick the little signets, or the pigs, or the little girl and then gobbled them up, Kate had never understood how they had all been tricked so easily.
Well, now she new that some of them hadn't been tricked, and those who had had most likely fallen victim to charm and cunning. Plus brute force.
She reached the shop to find that her friend had cleaned up the shop very well and had ordered pizza and booze just like he said. The two of them locked up the shop, checked the cameras, turned off the lights, and headed up to the apartment. Kate was surprised and glad to see that non of the earlier intruders had been to the upper part of the building. It was apparently easy to miss that there was an apartment above. It was a studio style apartment with a large loft bedroom, -which projected out over part of the living room- reached by an old iron spiral staircase. From the kitchen, one could just see the foot of the bed. Kate left Thomas to dish up the pizza and open the beer as she ran up to put on a pair of PJs.
"Hey, are you gonna call that waitress before you go?" She spoke normally, as the loft had no dividing wall to separate it from the air space over the rest of the apartment.
"Oh, yeah. I already did. She's gonna come see me in 'Jersey next week. After today, I think I'm gonna have a little break from the city." He was smiling but not laughing.
Kate walked lightly down the steps as Thomas carried two plates to the couch. Kate grabbed the beers from the kitchen counter and crossed to the couch where she sat, tucking one leg underneath herself. She and Thomas exchanged beer for pizza and ate in silence for a few minutes. Kate switched on the tv, but flicked aimlessly through the channels til Thomas piped up. "Hey, wanna watch the security footage?"
Kate was sure that would only raise questions from Thomas, and knowing what she did now, she didn't want to put him in any more danger.
"Not right before bed if that's OK."
"I'm here to protect you." He sounded sincere but he was half joking. Thomas was amazingly clever, and he was in good physical shape, but he was no fighter. He could throw a punch if need be, but to finish a fight took something Thomas didn't really have. He hated pain and didn't really like to inflict it either. He gave her a wink and took the remote. "Well, fine, but I get to pick a really horrible B-movie then."
They watched a movie about some sort of cross-bread animal killing machine which escaped and went on a rampage. Kate only half paid attention as her mind wandered elsewhere. When the movie finished Kate grabbed Thomas an extra blanket and pillow and headed for bed.
She laid in bed for a while thinking about all that she had just learned. Terrible creatures wanting to take over the human world as they had done the Fable world. Fairy tale creatures and characters walking around a little suburb just outside her city.
Suddenly a new thought struck her. Fairy tales were full of princes. Maybe she'd find her own Prince charming. For real this time.
