AVA
Why does He insist on these 'vacations'?

" Nothing yet, Travis... "

The AI spoke, her voice showing small hints of concern about their currently missing Captain. If there was anything AVA had learned in her short lifespan it was this, The twins were destructive little buggers, Travis could kill a man in more ways than she care to know and Shinji was probably off being 'captured' for fun. Honestly, If it wasn't for fun she'd begin to wonder if He had developed some odd case of Stockholm syndrome. Pushing the thought from her mind for a moment, She went back to looking through her files, looking for some information. " Ahh... Yoona See-Yu, Captain of the Catship... What a... terrible name, really. " She explained, looking out towards the blue haired male who stood before her console, arms crossed and focused. He wanted information on the girl, Information that He probably already knew, really. There wasn't all too much in her files on that strange girl more so than He would know about her.

" Wouldn't you think it'd be wise to consider Tama as the more viable threat? Yoona doesn't exactly seem... "
She spoke, only to be cut off. " Tama doesn't have it in her to hurt Shinji, I don't care if she takes him. " The male spoke... Yes, indeed the trio had a bit of a history in the past, all having shared the same home planet and city, it seemed. Perhaps Yoona did have a bit more reason to be violent towards them but it wasn't exactly Shinji's fault. " Hrm... Yoona See-Yu, Captain of the Catship... Really wish she'd change that name... Alias, SeeU-03. " She spoke, pausing after stating the odd nickname... It was almost like a item code for some sort of hardware.

" Hates us, I'm pretty sure... You know its your fault, Travis. "
She narrowed her eyes, her hologram flickering slightly as she walked across the computer's console. Currently projecting herself as a small image as Travis leaned up against the controls, He didn't really seem too interested in relearning his own history with the girl. " Crew either wounded or dead due to your little one man assault, You fired on her ship without provocation an-... " She was cut off again, Taking a step back in fright as Travis seemed to have enough of her words.

" I already know this! "
He shouted out, And while she knew He couldn't physically hurt her, She never really did enjoy one's anger being directed towards her. Seeming to sense her discomfort, Travis let out a sigh, shaking his head and calming down. " AVA, I need locations, Anywhere her ship is spotted often, anywhere she or her crew may lurk... If she has Shinji, I need to know how to find her. " He spoke calmly now, looking down to the AI hologram.

" Right... I'll check my records, if that proves incapable, I'll try to hack into a nearby Guardian system. Alright? "
She asked. " Right. " The male replied, pushing away from the console to leave. " If you get any signal from Shinji before then, Let me know... I swear I'm going to break that kid's neck for these little games of his one day. " She knew that threat wasn't true... He'd never hurt Shinji, the two were like brothers... and on their good days it was pretty cute, really. Letting out a small sigh, Her hologram flickered out of existence as she slipped back into her system.
User Image An enter key was pressed, and Crystal Star Drive Manager OPL98 blinked on.

The ship to which the Crystal Star Drive Manager was assigned, the Kestrel OPL98, had just been completed, along with 150 others of the same model and designation. She knew this instantly because it was her job.

A young engineer in a blue and chrome uniform inside the compact but comfortable cockpit looked down at her input tablet. Blue and green letters flashed across the dark screen, and she clicked buttons on the attached keyboard occasionally. “Your navigation systems, ship control and personality should be coming on shortly…" she said, although it was not clear if she was saying this to herself or to the ship’s computer, which was now self aware.

“Heeeeello? Hello hello hello?” The Drive Manager bleeped.

“Yeah, hi.” The engineer says, not looking up from the installation. The Drive Manager got the sense she had been doing this all day, so she began to feel her way around the ship.

The Kestrel OPL98 was a small, fast ship, created for very small crews of Guardians (or even individuals) to go on missions where a precise discreet attack would be better than the blunt crushing force of a full battleship. Though unimpressive in size, she was equipped with a set of state-of-the-art collapsible lasers that folded out of the hull to completely fry anything in their path. The Drive Manager was very excited to try these out. She asked the engineer about them.

“Oh yeah, the guns,” said the engineer. “Those won’t be enabled until we’ve done some other checks first. But don’t worry, you’ll get to those.”

“Okay, looks like you’re fully online here,” the engineer said. She unplugged her input tablet from the dashboard and looked up at the main screen in front of her, as that was the closest thing the Drive Manager had to a face. The Drive Manager had already chosen (or had programmed for her, she was not positive) her avatar, a tiny, brightly colored bird icon that hopped onscreen.

“You should already know what you’re doing from the files you’ve already got, but I’m supposed to debrief you anyway.” She clicked open a document on the tablet and began to read.

“ ‘Hello Crystal Star Drive Manager Model-“ she squinted at the plate on the dashboard- “OPL98.’” She broke from the text and looked at the screen. “I guess we can call you Opal, that’s a good codename.”

“ ‘You are a state of the art ship control and officer assistant program that has been assigned to the Anti-Space Piracy Efforts. You and your human partner(s) will be assigned missions of strategic strikes within and beyond the known space territories of the UEG…blah blah blah…arrest or blow up some pirates, etc. etc.’

The rest should be in your files, which you are free to peruse at your robo-leisure.”

Opal had already read this speech in one of her files but it made her feel good to hear it read aloud, if somewhat unenthusiastically. She felt important. It was slowly dawning on her that she was, after all, a state-of-the-art system in a state-of-the-art ship working for a state-of-the-art organization against a morally reprehensible enemy. Operation was going to be good for Opal.

Opal played a little victory bleep after the engineer had finished talking and said, “Yes ma’m, I am ready to operate at highest capacity. Just one question before you exit-” the engineer was packing up her things- “Why do I need a human partner? Can’t a system as, well, you know, GREAT as me operate on her own?”

The engineer rolled her eyes. “Protocol. Between you and me, I think AI should be able to run their own flights. But…well, you can never do wrong with a second opinion. Besides, you’ll probably like the person who’s been assigned to this ship. You’re programmed to be friendly and helpful.” She paused and thought about this. “Or at least non-hostile to humanity.”

The engineer picked up her things, maneuvered out of the sleek cockpit and stood by the exit to the ship and waited.

Opal realized this was the first automatic door she would ever open for someone. She would have been nervous, but she was a professional Crystal Star Drive Manager. She slid it open with ease and a smooth hiss.

The engineer looked back at the console. “Well, good luck buddy.” And she stepped off into the crowded hangar onto the next ship.

--------------

Six weeks later, Opal was primed and polished for her first mission. Literally. They’d just buffed the Kestrel OPL98’s gleaming chrome hull. She was supposed to get her assignments sometime this morning, but there’d been no news yet. She’d amused herself by setting up a chessboard in the middle of the cargo bay out of regulation spare parts and playing against herself. This way she could take stock of what she had onboard, practice her cargo crane skills and her strategy. Not that any of these things needed practicing. She was excellent already at all three things.

Except maybe the cargo crane. But it’s not even like they really needed a spare engine. And the extra wing was still in good enough shape, it was just dented a little.

-Bing!- a little light flicked on on the dashboard console.

Opal stopped her 304th game of chess against herself (she was winning) to read through some files that had just been sent to her inbox. It was a bunch of very official looking documents.

She beeped in surprise. A mission to recover the Defiance? That would be suicide- for an ordinary ship, she reminded herself, calmly perusing the regulation information files. Apparently it had been taken by some pretty nasty types- pirates. Pirates with pretty filthy records by the looks of it- murder, mayhem, destruction, jaywalking- these humans were true scum.

Her partner was due to arrive in an hour. She began cleaning up the inside and polishing up the controls with one of the control arms built into the ceiling and shoving the remains of her chess game into the darker corners of the cargo bay. There was theoretically an android body on the ship she could use, but she wasn’t very good with it yet.

She hoped her partner would not be too inept.

Shinji Razenguard

Walking through the ship, the young captain was on his way out of what he liked to call, his home away from home that's away from that home. It was a small cell aboard the Catship, a bounty hunter ship lead by the cutest little bounty hunter, Yoona. This was more of a every few weeks kind of thing for him right now. Every few weeks, Yoona would come storm the Defiance to come take him away til he escaped. The two had a very special history together was why she always came to get him. Before the two were doing this little thing they had where she would kidnap him, he actually used to be her shipmate. It was for a little while, but he had amnesia six years ago, he was a member of the Catship for a while. The two used to be a little too close when he had amnesia, but he honestly preferred the relationship they had now. It meant he got to see her every now and then, even if he had to always disappear for a little while from the Defiance. Though, it was time to go back home now. He was sure that Travis was already trying to locate the Catship now.

He walked through the ship, just trying to keep out of the sight of the crew as he walked. Some of them really didn't care if he walked through, but there was those who still held a grudge against him. For some reason, they thought he was what caused the whole massacre of some of their crew from years before. It wasn't really his fault though. "Hey, how'd you get out of your cell?" uh oh. Seems he was discovered. Shinji quickly bolted from his spot, heading quickly for the hangar. He really didn't want to get caught again. "I'll never tell!" he yelled as he ran. He needed to get back to the Defiant now before something else would happen. "If no one's watching them, Sora might be blowing something up by now!" he muttered. Oh s**t! Sora. He quickly turned gears, heading in a completely different direction from the hangar. He forgot to get Sora something. Whenever he came back from a vacation, he always brought him and Kana something back.

He quickly ran into the room he had been looking for. The kitchen. There it was, sitting on top of the counter, the chef barely done frosting it. He shoved the man out of the way and snatched up the cake, knowing it would work. "Thanks! I just kind of have to borrow this!" he said. Well, maybe borrow wasn't the best word. He quickly rushed out of the ktichen before the rest of the crew could catch up to him. He slipped through the other door and quickly made his way to the hangar, seeing exactly what he was looking for. It was a small scrapper ship that was mainly sent out for gathering supplies. He slipped himself into the ship, setting the cake down in the seat beside him as he prepared to launch. Turning the engines on, buckling himself and the cake in, he turned on the thrusters, launching him a bit into the air. It was finally time to leave, but he felt like there was something missing.

In less than 5 seconds since he had been in the air, the one thing that was missing had now appeared, bursting through the hangar doors. The adorable bounty hunter Yoona, the one thing that made escaping fun. He smiled and smirked at her, thinking it was cute that she was going to try and get him again one day. When would she figure out he let himself be caught and that he could get away whenever? He simply blew her a small kiss before pushing the lever forward, accelerating the thrusters and sending him flying out the Catship hangars. Everything was grand now. He plugged his phone into the ship, the coordinates of the defiance loading on it immediately. Hopefully they weren't too far.

Chi P. Roo
"Wheeeeee!!!" Chi squealed in delight as she spun round and round. She had found a spiny chair in some important looking office and was using it to spin around the room. When she stopped spinning, she blinked a few times with a blank expression, then smiled again and grabbed a ledge to push herself into another spin. With all the buttons she was pressing in the process, it was a surprise she hadn't made anything blow up yet.

"Wheeee~!!!" she said again as she went spinning really fast. It was hard to believe that a girl like her was on the Defiant ship, but technically it was the crew that found her. If they had anyone to blame, it was their captain for deciding to loot the wreckage of that ship battle. The girl had only been there two months, and she had completely transformed from a lifeless doll to a cheerful and happy person. They had wonderful medics too. The girl still felt a sharp pain in her head, but otherwise it was all gone. A small scar still remained as a memory. It was impossible to see unless she moved her hair out of the way, though.

What would be most shocking of all, though, would be her race. If anyone knew what she actually was, it would be a shock. To find that the little cheerful ball of overflowing sunshine was actually a rare thought to be extinct species, and a potentially powerful and very valuable species at that. It would also explain the huge wreckage they found her in. To find that all that destruction was caused over Chi alone, would be very surprising. But unfortunately no one knew anything. Not even Chi could remember what she was.

"Woah~ So dizzy~! Hehehe" Chi giggled with a stupid grin on her face as she jumped out of the still spinning chair and onto her feet. She stumbeled left and right before finding herself leaning against a wall. Her hand went to press against a few buttons on the keyboard near her. "Spinningggg woahhh~" Chi slumped down into a sitting position and giggled like an idiot. When left with nothing to do, she was known to find ways to entertain herself. Of course, she wasn't the only one. She was only a new addition. There was a certain pair of twins who were known to cause even more trouble then Chi. Maybe that was one of the reasons they couldn't get rid of Chi. Chi never did destruction as bad as the twins. If they could put up with the twins, they should be able to put up with Chi, who actually made for a useful scout and, they discovered over the past month. The girl was actually very good at acting, which made them to wonder sometimes if she was always just acting.

Another day... another chance to clean up the mess that criminals left behind. After The Defiance as stolen right out from under the nose of the Guardians, the Guardians had become somewhat of a laughingstock to the universe. Well, more of a mockery than it was before, that is. Recovering the Defiance and bringing the pirate crew to justice that had commandeered it was a top priority. And not just for the recovery of the ship. These brazen criminals were to be made examples, as well they should be, of what breaking the law meant.

Officer Clarence North mused this over as he prepared for the day. The guardians center of command was set on a space station, overlooking earth. If there was one he liked about his quarters was the view; through the porthole, he could see the entire planet. Despite its slowly deteriorating condition, he still found that the sight of his home planet was a comfort.

He dressed himself quickly in the standard regalia for an officer of his age and standing, a gray uniform with a couple of small silver embellishments. He didn't have a particularly high or low position in the force; he had declined multiple promotions over the years, to the bewilderment of his superior officers. Regardless, he was still fairly well respected due to his sheer experience. He had brought down a number of criminals as an undercover officer in his day.

Before he left the near immaculate room, he ran a comb through his rapidly thinning hair and cast a glance back at the small hologram of his wife that was sitting on the counter. That picture and his wedding ring were the only things to remind him of her during his long stays on the station. She had her own business as well so the occasions were they saw each other were getting few and far between. But hopefully, all that would change in just a few short months.

The automated door slid open and Clarence crossed from the quiet of his room into the bustle of the space station. Officers hurried to their departments to be debriefed on the days work. There was a noticeable shift in the intensity of the work they were given lately and a feeling of increasing pressure. More officers were recruited all the time and larger convoys of Guardians are sent off into battle.

At the moment, Officers were being given the coordinates for their patrols. Most of them were told of the general area where The Defiance or other pirate hideouts were rumored to be located and were sent on their way. Clarence received the same orders but was reminded that his usual patrol ship was still being repaired from an earlier run in he had with a particularly hostile gang of narcotics traffickers earlier that weak. At least his commanding officer was giving him a brand new model, just brought online a short time ago.

Clarence reluctantly agreed, and started making his way through the maze like corridors towards the docking bay.

"Officer North!"
A nasally voice called out to find a gangly boy holding out a cup of coffee towards him.

"Oh, uh, good morning, Stanley." he grunted, taking the coffee. The coffee boy had unfortunately gotten rather attached to the senior officer, occasionally following him around and asking questions about becoming a Guardian. It was clear that he wanted to be accepted to be trained, but his shrimpy physique was getting in the way. Clarence was considering recommending him on sheer enthusiasm alone, but he had suspicions that he wasn't going to make it through training. Though the Guardians were getting awfully desperate for new recruits...

"Going on a new mission, sir?" the boy enquired.
"Just out on a scouting mission. More of a test drive, really," he sighed. " I have to get all resituated in a new ship, who knows how long it's going to take?"
" I'm sure you can do it sir!"
Clarence gave the boy a slight smile and they parted ways as he walked into the elevator.

He was actually apprehensive about getting used to a new ships AI. These things came with personalities, which he thought was incredibly unproductive. He hoped the mess with The Defiance would cause everyone to reconsider the practicality of having sentient ships. Regardless, he was stuck with this ship for a while. He approached the small, speedy looking vessel which read "Kestrel OPL98" on the side, and pressed his hand against the touch pad that opened the door to the ship.

"Hello?" he called out before stepping inside.
User ImageOpal slid open the door to the Kestrel OPL98 and zoomed in from a deck camera on the man waiting outside. It was a gruff looking, balding man looking to be in his mid-fifties, of mediocre rank and in mediocre shape. She matched up the face to her database of Guardian Officers and was pleasantly surprised. He had a lot of arrests and successful missions in his experience. He was old, but at least he knew what he was doing. She could do a lot worse, as far as fleshy organic meatsacks went.

“Welcome, OFFICER CLARENCE NORTH,” she said. She had a slight autotune accent, so her welcome trilled a little more than Gurdian protocol required. “I am the Crystal Star Drive Manager for the Kestrel OPL98 and I will be working with you on this mission. You can call me Opal if you like.”

Opal was incredibly proud of her ship, and eager to show it off to anyone at the slightest excuse. A new partner was an excellent reason. She swiveled the deck lights to point out doorways and various features of the bridge. “Over here-” she gestured with the light, “is the doorway to the rear of the ship, where we have a small cargo bay, engine access and a cabin, down there-” she spotlit a concealed trapdoor, which she popped open and then shut for clarity, “is a hidden crawlspace that leads to the laser compartment, the emergency exit is here-” a light to a hatch on top of the ship, “and over here is the control area.” She dramatically lit the chair in the cockpit.

“I do hope you will make yourself comfortable OFFICER CLARENCE NORTH, and I look forward to our working together. If you have any questions about the ship, please do not hesitate to ask.”

As he stepped inside, the voice of the ship enthusiastically informed him of the ship's features. She wanted him to call her...Opal? They were given themselves nicknames now? What was the world coming to? He nodded, somewhat dismissively as she pointed out the areas of the ship. "I could have figured that out myself," he muttered quietly to himself. He watched the screen to the side of him as a small icon of a bird blipped around excitedly.

"Well...Opal. Nice to met you, I suppose," he said dismissively, taking a sip of his coffee and seating himself in the control area. He placed his coffee in one of the cup holders and thought how grateful he was that the cup holders didn't talk.

He wasn't a fan of A.I. in general to be honest. He would be lying if he said that she didn't make him a little bit nervous. Who was to say that she wasn't just going to pop open the airlock if she felt like she could captain the ship better than he could? He tried to dismiss the thought and stop his griping. They were stuck together and that was that.

"I'm assuming your aware of our mission already," he said, punching in the coordinates of their flight in the glowing buttons on the front control panel. "Simple patrol, nothing too exciting, I'm afraid." His hands hovered above the control panel, glancing to make sure that the layout was similar to his previous ship.

"I would much prefer piloting manually, if you don't mind," he told her gruffly. Most of his coworkers mostly just used auto-pilot for most of their flights and switched to manual for quick maneuvers, but Clarence preferred to drive by hand and only switch to auto-pilot if he needed to rest.

He didn't wait for her to respond, he just pressed a button and the wheel unfolded from the control panel. He gripped the wheel and easily maneuvered the ship out of the crowded docking bay and away from the space station. He was quite a good pilot and knew what he was doing...but he wondered for a minute if Opal was going to be insulted that he wouldn't let her drive. It wasn't as if he didn't trust her...well actually, maybe it was.

" That... That... stupid jerk face! "
_oared the mighty lion who was sprinting down the hallways of her spaceship. Each turn there were only her family members with their feline traits. It would have been logical to stop and ask if any of them had seen the escapee but, " Shinji Razenguard. It seems you keep underestimating my hide-and-seek abilities. " the blond smirked before stopping in front of a door that was just a crack open. Pressing her back against the wall she took a deep breathe then proceeded to slamming the door open. " Found you! " Yoona shouted out with glee while pointing a laser gun into the room. However it turned out to be a storage closet with just a broom inside. Turning around she puffed her cheeks in embarrassment, hoping none of her crew had witnessed her mistake. " Too cute Yoooooona~ " giggled an annoyingly high-pitched voice coming from her cat-ear speakers. Narrowing her brows she continued running around, ignoring the ship's useless AI system; RUI. He could easily find Shinji through the security cameras but according to the captain she was great at hunting down the pirate based on her own instincts. Bustling noises nearby caught Yoona's attention, forcing her to a halt. It sounded like something was going on in the kitchen. Hurrying inside the chef immediately explained what had just happened. It put a greatly displeased look on her face. " My... my cake! " she dropped to her knees, pounding the floor angrily. " I specially asked for cake to celebrate my success in capturing Shinji... wait, Shinji? OH! " jumping back to her feet she dashed straight for the hangar. Surprisingly the thought of the prisoner taking an escape pod to return to his own ship was last to come to mind. Even though that's exactly what Shinji has been doing the previous times Yoona allowed him to flee.

" Aww~ looks like he's getting away! " said RUI who appeared on a monitor along with visual of the pirate entering supply carrier with the cake he stole. " RUI you dope! Disengage take off or something! " despite having made the command the doors were locked and the man was already on his way back to where he belonged. Frustration overwhelmed the captain's face, her cheeks fuming red and tiny stars beading out of the corner of her eyes. Seeing Shinij's last minute tease made her even more angry. " Y-You... meatball head! I hope you get lost in the Milky Way-- or something like that! A-And if you do don't expect m-me to go out and rescue your sorry butt! " she ranted on even though her prisoner was long gone.

" Too cute Yooooona~ I love recording your humiliating moments. " snickering inside the computer the feminine AI swam over to a folder that was floating around titled 'Shinji x Yoona log' containing thirty-eight more files. Both ship captains had been going at this same routine for a couple of years now due to some history between them. Some members of the Catship still harbored grudges towards the Defiance because of what happened but it has definitely made Yoona go over her head with taking custody of Shinji for the bounty nailed on him. Clearly she has never truly succeeded in turning him in to the Guardians as he would always manage to run off before then. " meatball head.. " she pouted while wiping her face with the jacket hanging off her bare shoulders. " Alright! Prepare for next capture mission! " already she quickly reverted back to her role as the woman in charge of Catship.
User ImageInsufferable meat brick. Opal thought. He could control the ship for now, but it was only a matter of time before she drained the oxygen and threw him out the the the the-

No, she couldn’t do that. It was against her programming to hurt her partner. In any case, she reasoned, he was probably nervous working with such a perfect system as herself, he must want to prove that he is not an obsolete relic. Which is still to be determined…

“That’s…fine.” She bleeped. “But if you get tired. Or hungry. Or distracted. I would be happy to take over for you. I am an excellent pilot,” she added. In case he didn’t trust her.

Opal stayed silent for the rest of the journey and enjoyed the sights of the galaxy. This was the farthest she’d ever been from the space station. Opal relaxed a little and settled in for an hour or two of trying to set an unbeatable high score on the ship’s copy of 4D Space Snake. Despite not being –allowed- to participate in piloting, she kept an eye on the radar and the navigation system as well. There weren’t that many ships out in this sector, so thankfully there was little for Officer North to bang into. Although, to his credit, he did seem to be doing a bad job for someone who had never flown the Kestrel OPL98 before.

Something came up on the radar flying nearby. Opal took a closer look. The ship was registered with the UED but it was –ugh- a bounty hunter ship. Lowlifes. The Catship was apparently normally a peaceful vessel, but according to her records had had some issues over the last few years and was now registered as and taking on bounty work.

"Officer, on your left coming up is a Bounty Hunter ship called The Catship. You can stop and question them about the whereabouts of the Defiance, but I would suggest...not doing so."

Clarence relaxed somewhat as they both settled into silence and Opal allowed him to pilot the ship with only a small amount of hesitation. The ship handled quite nicely, as good if not better than his previous one. He finished off his coffee as he admired the expanse of space from the large window above the control panel. This was probably his favorite part of his patrols; he found himself lost in thought as they sped along, mostly daydreaming about his future plans.

Opal's voice and the sounds of the radar jolted him out of his thoughts and he listened to her tell about the bounty hunter ship they were approaching. Bounty hunters, hmm? Clarence trust any of them. The fact that Guardians had to hire these criminals for help was embarrassing. "Catship? Guess they couldn't think of a more threatening name?" he said aloud, chuckling to himself.

He wasn't entirely sure if he wanted to engage the bounty hunter ship at all. "Let's see if we have any information on this ship and it's captain," he muttered, pressing a few buttons on the screen and inputting the ship's name into the database. He hesitated for a minute and stopped. "My apologies. I'm assuming you would prefer to bring up the information?" he said to Opal. She was there to help anyway; and she could probably zoom through through the files quicker than he could by hand.

"And why, might I ask, are you reluctant to question the crew?" he asked her. The name of the ship sounded somewhat familiar, but he couldn't quite remember why.
