Welcome to Gaia! ::

Ok, I am thinking about purchasing a Windows computer. However, my parents tell me to get a Mac only because it it virus-free and it lasts longer. I have had more experience with Windows computers and I even know how to build one completely from scratch. The stuff I do on Windows is much more flexible and I can't really do ANYTHING on a Mac.

I keep on telling my parents that Windows is better because you can build one completely from scratch and more programs are compatible with Windows. My parents still don't agree with me because they are afraid of viruses getting on my computer and whatnot.

I still want to purchase a Windows because I've had more experience with it, it's cheaper, and I don't have to purchase a whole new computer if it breaks down or something.

Inform your parents that Macs are not virus-free. In fact, there has been a recent problem with viruses on Macs that started due to bugs in Java. A few other viruses and other malware exist.

You can run Windows on Macs, if you weren't already aware. And Macs are the same hardware - and generally the same price - as any high-end big-brand Windows system.

Your parents' concerns are unfounded. Yes, Windows has a problem with viruses. But when the system is properly maintained, it's kept updated with security patches as they come out, and it has one good antivirus suite (and one malware package) installed and running, and as long as you keep Adobe Flash Player and Java and your browser and all your other software updated, you're extremely unlikely to get a virus.

But the same is true of any other system, whether it's running Mac OS X or Linux: Keep everything updated, and you won't have a problem.

People get viruses because they surf illicit sites like porn galleries and warez sites and public torrent sites and the other dark backalleys of the Internet, and they don't keep their software updated.

Adobe Flash Player is one of the ways viruses get in.

Another is Adobe Reader (which you should never install).

Another is Java's browser plugin for running applets (which you should disable in all your browsers). (The rest of Java is fine, it's just the applets browser plugin that is a problem.)

Another is Internet Explorer (which you should keep updated to the latest version and never use).

As long as you do that, and keep everything else updated, and keep your virus software caught up on virus definitions, and don't spend time in the seedy part of the web, you'll be fine.

And what about all of those things that make people say, "I've got a virus!1!" Well, almost none of those issues are actually caused by a virus. They're more often driver problems, buggy software, crappy websites, intrusive online advertisements, or a simple case of using the software wrong. Real viruses cause Windows Explorer (the file browser) to crash. Real malware causes browser popups from Internet Explorer when you're using Firefox. Real trojans are completely invisible until someone in another country starts taking over your computer. Real worms start using up all your network bandwidth to start sending emails for some spammer somewhere, without ever actually being apparent. But what your parents call a virus is probably just them not understanding their computer.

And frankly, your parents should not be using computers.
I'm gonna say as a person that works in IT. That if you want to shell out an arm and a leg for a mac go right ahead. I'm intitled to agree that Windows is better for you particularly if you can build it from scratch. As mentioned before Macs are not virus free and do not always last longer, a lot of people I know have recently had problems with their hard drives being duds.

if there were no mac viruses, http://www.sophos.com/en-us/products/free-tools/sophos-antivirus-for-mac-home-edition.aspx this would not exist.

Also, they are completely replaced each year with a new model, so that's not very long.

Your parents seem to be pushing you to what they personaly want and not what is good for you.

Holy crap, that's a boatload of information. Yeah, after reading this, I should purchase a windows computer and try my best to maintain it.

No, you should buy the one you're more comfortable with. In your case, that means Windows.

But I want to emphasize that Windows requires more maintenance than all of the other options.

Yes, I realize. But I am taking a technical college

So I'm used to this kind of stuff.

That anti-virus thing is a load of bull.
I've been using Windows for years and I've never ever got a virus, well... I did a few times but my Anti-Virus programme blocked them out for me.

Mac's are over priced for the specs that you're given. I also heard that the Operating System is based off of Lynix. Not sure if thats true or not but anyway, I'd recommend Windows. Since I do a lot of Gaming I need to have the OS that the games are designed for, in that case, Windows. Plus Windows has the more applications compared to Mac OS so you're bound to find the application that you're looking for.

Go for Windows! Avoid Mac's! People only buy macs for the Apple Logo. Windows does EVERYTHING a mac can do and more! Mac just tries to make itself look nicer when you're doing things, but really, Windows just gets everything done.

Plus when a Windows computer screws up you can easily fix it no problems, but I heard with Mac's they're a nightmare to get back working again. I could be wrong but thats just what I've heard.
I have windows and it is a lot better than my old Mac from 2008

The only people who get viruses are the people who fall for this s**t:

Also OSX is Unix, not Linux.
Mac OSX is fundamentally designed to have less issues by restricting the user's freedom and removing a salvo of instances where things could go wrong, and yes you're right, when things do go wrong with a Mac it's almost impossible to fix yourself, it almost always means shipping off to get repaired by a specialist.

It's not. It's an extremely common misconception. OS X and Linux have nothing in common. Nothing.

OS X is a CMU Mach kernel, with code borrowed from FreeBSD to make it POSIX-compliant. Apple has since gotten a POSIX certification which allows them to use the Unix name in their marketing materials.

FreeBSD itself is a Unix. Its code comes from the Berkeley Software Distribution of AT&T Unix System V.

Linux is not a Unix. It is a POSIX-compliant kernel, but it was written from scratch, with some of its features modeled after Minix, which is also a completely unrelated system that is also not based on Unix.

There is no relationship between Linux and OS X. At all.
