He would have loved it if Amore had delayed her arrival by just another few minutes. Balian had just the perfect response on his lips, but with her arrival it would have to wait. Around the council they were to be on their best behaviour and he was not going to be called out on his first night. Nevertheless, it appeared as though his words to Raiden had been overheard as the look she shot in his direction when she started talking about furthering their own agenda indicated clearly that she knew. Staring right back, unaffected by the look in her eye, he continued to listen patiently while the rest of the rules were explained and the plans the Council had in place for the rest of the week.

A masquerade was not what he expected when they said they were to have a ball tonight and as much as he would enjoy the anonymity to ask whatever questions he would like of the other Royals seated in the room, he would much prefer if he would have some way of figuring out who was behind the other masks in order to pose the correct questions and play the part he had in mind to the best of his abilities. "Of course, Princess Elora," he said, a corner of his lips twitching up in a smile. Let the others think what they would about that comment. As far as he was concerned they were all in a viper's den at any rate and he would rather be one of the more poisonous snakes in that pit and have a better chance at survival, than be the unfortunate who was thrown in without protection or skill to escape and who made such easy prey. "Come now, Prince Evander, what would be the point of a masquerade if I told everyone my disguise ahead of time?" Raising a brow, he turned the question back on the Orien Prince asking to know what his mask would be. "While assigning everyone else a mask, your sister failed to give one to you. Perhaps you'll choose a puppy or a calf."

Glancing at the food that was placed down in front of him, he realized it was one of the traditional vegetarian dishes from home. As much as Balian saw no harm in eating meat, when around his sister he would bypass it, if only not to cause her any offence. It appeared as though the council had been made aware of this fact as well and he wondered, just how much they knew of the personal quirks of the royals seated at the table. Was there a servant he would be able to bribe for more information? With how much reach the council had, it felt as though he had been presented with the perfect opportunity to gather information on the other kingdoms. Well, there was only one he particularly interested in at the moment. Looking up and seeing the genuine smile spread across Sybil's face only strengthened his resolve. She was always so genuine in whatever she did, and the war, particularly the burned forests was upsetting to her. The war had to end, if only to see the day where she didn't have to be so frightened... but when he did he would make sure he got what he wanted as well.

"I hope so too, Sybil." Balian kept his voice quiet so he wouldn't be overheard. He hoped the pairings were well thought out, and that for the sake of his sister or Elora, whichever was paired with 'Prince' Zheng, the man wasn't abusive. As much as he would like to believe Princess Acacia, he had a feeling Princess Meilin neglected to tell her sister things which would make a lady of Princess Acacia's constitution faint. Speaking of, she didn't look too happy at the moment. As much as he was curious to know the cause of her distress, he didn't want to bring it up so openly. There would be time after dinner to ask if she didn't run off to get changed and ready for the masquerade. "Or at the very least everyone will try to set aside their differences." Though in truth, Balian wasn't that optimistic. The war would end but not at the cost of his personal freedom.

Dinner was pleasant. Nothing too surprising occurred, and all and all he was rather satisfied with the experience. The Orien siblings were wonderful company as usual, and the brief conversation he had exchanged with Acacia while at the dinner table only went to further his plans. He most definitely wanted nothing to do with Meilin and she may prove to be a problem in the future, but he had never had any problems knocking down obstacles in his way. He had meant to ask Zheng about what his sister and Kyrileir had said in the garden, but with Amore's announcement about the ball, he decided to leave it to another day. The day would be be far too long if he confronted the Brivas prince, so instead he left the dining room once Sybil was ready, then went to his room to get ready.

Resting on his bed were a suit, two pairs of gloves, and a mask. Picking up the mask, he looked it over not seeing anything special about it. Could this seriously be used to hide their identities? Going over to a mirror, he held it over his face and studied his reflection, seeing his once white-silver hair turn an unremarkable brown, his pale violet eyes turn blue. How intriguing. He really had to learn this form of magic before he left the island. It would be incredibly useful to him when dealing with some stubborn nobles in Savona.... Putting the mask down, he got changed, placing the mask back on his face and then made his way down to the ballroom. Taking a quick look around to make sure no one saw him leaving his room. It wouldn't be any fun if he was discovered so quickly.

Once he arrived, Balian looked around seeing two couples dancing while a lady in white and another in green witting on benches and waiting for their partners. The one in white didn't really have the posture of a princess, but he greeted her like one all the same, not wanting to risk offending her should she be a member of the nobility, playing the part of a servant. Tonight would be the perfect opportunity to learn things about the others. But that also meant that everyone else was playing the same game and while he tried to learn about his partner and who she was, he would have to see behind both masks they were wearing. And what did he really know about the enemy princesses? Kyrileir was possibly quite intelligent but a child, while Meilin lacked in all the social graces. Acacia would probably be true to herself as he couldn't see a lie leaving her lips, not even for the most noble of causes. Something he admired about her, but couldn't for the life of him comprehend.

Finding the number six placed on a bench with the letter F and realizing that his partner had yet to arrive, he continued to stand near the bench, watching the two women on the dance floor. The one in gold was quite beautiful. Everything about her was elegant and all her lines flowed perfectly. Watching her dance with her partner was a treat for the eyes. They seemed to read each other perfectly. The other pair, appeared to have just begun to dance and he watched them with interest for some time before looking away, leaning against the wall as though he hadn't a care in the world, a hand in his pocket, and a slight smile on his face as though his mind had wandered someplace else while he waited for his partner to arrive.

  • No matter how cruel he was, when he decided to throw a ball, the King pulled it off with a flourish. In the days since he learned of the announcement, he'd devoted the majority of his time to training. Sparring with the guards, improving his skill with daggers and various other small hidden blades. If the riders were expected to attend, he didn't want to draw any more attention to himself with a bow and his quiver strapped to him. Yes, he knew the necessary spells to hide them from view, but that didn't hide the fact that they were there and if any one bumped into him, the weapons would be plainly obvious. It would have helped if he bothered to learn the spell for enlarging and shrinking objects, but while he would have no trouble shrinking his weapons down, he was almost certain that if he should need them and was trying to hurry, he was sure that the weapon would not end up at the right side. And he disliked casting spells on his weapons directly, especially if it would change the shape and/or weight of it.

Looking around the brightly lit ballroom, a myriad of colours twirled around on the dance floor, masks hiding their identities. There was one guard stationed close to where he had stashed his bow and his gaze lingered a moment before he focused on the bright hazel eyes of the woman who had decided to approach him, and he offered her a half smile over the glass of wine in his hand. Red like the blood which would stain these floors if — when — the Royals and their shepherds made their appearance. Eyes sparkling with mirth, he put the crystal down on a nearby table and took one of her dainty hands in his, leading her onto the dance floor. Yes, he knew he had a job to do, but nothing was going to sop him from having a little fun while he was here. The ball was a grand affair and it would behoove him to waste such a prime opportunity to pick up a midnight snack. And tonight it was made just that much easier since he was dressed up in his formal clothes and the mask did add an air of mystery, his his infernal blood enhanced.

Twirling her around to the three four beat of the waltz, Styxx kept an eye out for the other members of the Riders. Mikhail wasn't hard to find, standing on the dais with his father and Aniketos Plessa. The long lost son. Now wasn't that an interesting development. Styxx had been too young to remember much about the years leading up to when Trey took the throne and the various royal children were sent through the dimensions to Sector 13. But he did remember the stories. Hushed whispers in the night about the late King's two children and their love for him. Love for their uncle was never mentioned. Long lost son of Plessa, the true heir to the throne. The one who should be ruling as soon as he came of age. But Trey had fought too hard and for too long to be where he now stood. So maybe he really had convinced Aniketos that he was his legitimate father.

Turning in time with the slow measured bead, hardly aware of his feet as they glided across the floor, he kept up a conversation with the brunette, gracious with his compliments but not overdoing it, capturing her attention and keeping an eye out for any uninvited guests. She was a pretty young thing and she had a great smile and energy about her. Were it not for the fact that with Aniketos now in the public eye, Psykhe and her sheep were bound to make an appearance soon he couldn't pull her into a room for a few ... It appeared he would have to cut this dance short. Some fresh meat had arrived.

Once again she was victorious! She could hear the dogs barking excitedly from behind the door as she waited for Wyn to catch up with her, a grin on her face. Her breathing was a little faster than normal after the run, but it had served its purpose. She wasn't thinking about what Riley had said earlier, though the thought that the Harper could be part of some criminal organization was still there on the edge of her consciousness and she tried to keep her thoughts on something else. And for that reason, Letizia was so grateful that Wyn had spoken when he did. "Maybe," she said sticking out her tongue and giggling. "But until then, I'm always going to win~" Grabbing Wyn's hand, she hurried through the fence, down the walkway and up the steps to the door. "C'mon! Everyone is probably already here!" Because if they weren't Letty didn't want to have to deal with that reality right now. Alex and Nico would be waiting inside for her. And Riley and Wyn would find Artie in there playing with Melly! Letizia was sure that one of the teenagers knew what happened that night and if not, the Harpers would be there to explain everything.

Throwing open the doors and being greeted by the dogs, Letty let go of Wyn's hand for a moment to kneel down and pet Kenny, laughing lightly as she accepted his sloppy kisses. The smaller pups were her favourites, Kenny especially. "Are Alex, Nico, and Artie here, Eumelia?" she asked, giving the dogs a bit more love, before straightening and moving past the younger girl and looking around. Her brother and sister were here and they were fine, she just knew it. Letty worried a bit about Nico 'cause he was so little, but Alex was a fighter! Nothing could get her down! As much as she disliked her siblings, they were still her siblings and so she worried about them, though she didn't particularly like to admit it.

Moving away from the door, Letitiza wondered where everyone was. The house was almost never this quiet. There was always something to do and someone or something getting in her space. Where is everyone?! It was starting to feel like something was wrong. If Alex heard her voice, Letty was certain her older sister would be right here. Dropping her bag in the hall, she continued on, looking into the nearby rooms, eyes anxious, feeling agitated. They were here, and everyone was all — "Alex!"

Running into the living room, she went up to her sister who lay sleeping on the couch with Simon tucked in next to her. "Hey, Alex, get up! I'm back!" There was no response so she shook her shoulder a little trying to rouse her from her sleep, her voice taking on a bit of a whinny tone. "Alexandria... Svegliati!" What was wrong with her?? Alex was fine when she last saw her! She was laughing, and determined, and strong! What happened to her sister? Shaking her again only to have no response, Letizia took a deep breath, not wanting to scare Eumelia or make her worry, then turned around. "Is Damian here? I... need to talk to him." Alex was fine, Nico was fine, Artie was around here somewhere. They were safe.

Splitting into groups as they arrived, Danielle found herself partnered with Mali while Toma was with Kyrinthis and Alisanne. Part of her wished she were in that group instead of Alisanne, but after what happened when Kyrin returned, she didn't want to get in Toma's way. Besides, she could take care of herself, while it looked as though Kyrin would need all the help she could get. So, dressed in a a crimson dress that looked like something from out of a painting she would find in a museum, a delicate red mask, and her hair in a fancy up-do, Danni felt absolutely amazing! The ball was beautiful and something she had only seen in oil paintings and other relics of the 5th to 15th century! For anyone who loved art it was a dream come true! If she could invent some way to provide electricity to her camera she would be taking pictures like crazy... but then there was the problem of not being able to print them. Frustrating.

Thankfully Mali shared an interest in art as well and was willing to listen to her talk. Well, she was making general noises of agreement, and she was taking that as a good sign. It was nice to find someone else who shared her interest in art, and before one of the masked gentlemen had asked her to dance, she was asking Mali if she knew someone who would teach her how to paint. As princess of Uassine it would be in her best interests to find an age appropriate hobby, no? Oil paintings were always beautiful and she was fond of them. Unfortunately, she wasn't able to wait for an answer, allowing herself to be swept into the crowd, trying to remember the three days of etiquette she was given, and not make a fool of herself by mentioning something that would be out of place for this world.

Focusing on trying to remember the steps to the dance and not stepping on the man's toes, caused Danielle to remember she did have a job to do here. They were supposed to find Anik and make sure he was safe. Although standing there next to the King, Anik looked well enough to her. He didn't seem troubled, or worried. It was strange and hesitantly bringing it up with the man she was dancing with revealed that he thought it strange as well. So it wasn't just her imagination. What had the King done to him? Anik was a fighter! He was one of Cal's friends and so someone she didn't really talk to. For him to have become so meek was disturbing. But maybe it was a spell like the ones Mali could use...

Suddenly bursting into laughter, Danni's eyes sparkled as she refocused her attention on the man she was dancing with. He was cute, funny, and a good dancer. And, unlike someone else, he was paying attention to her. This was, what, her second dance with him of the night. Together, the went to get a glass of wine, talking about art, the ball, current affairs — anything and everything. Walking past Toma, Cal and Feli, she gave a cute little wag of her fingers and a wink, then refocused on the man who was leading her over to a painting he thought she might be interested in.

  • Great minds think alike, or was it something else all together? Eyes narrowing slightly, Styxx let the brunette go, watching as she made her retreat and slowly making his way out of the crowd, keeping his eye on her. There was something odd about the timing. Either that or he was being paranoid, but Styxx thought it was best to be sure. There was no need to make any screw ups tonight just because he had a lovely and intelligent lady in his arms. That and he wondered if he could perhaps hook up with her again at some other date. He started to make his way out of the crowd of dancers, sticking close to the edge of the ballroom. The brunette had stopped to talk with another couple that she appeared to know, and he hummed in thought. There was something about that pink haired girl and the way she held herself. Trying not to draw too much attention to her person and sticking close to the male's side. They were joined not long after by a redhead with a confidence about him, a stark contrast to the one who reminded him of a doe.

The Doe appeared to excuse herself and walk around the room on her own, finding herself in the arms of another gentleman. As shy as she appeared, she did seem to be a good dancer. Styxx took his eyes off of the pink haired lady and looked around for the head of teal that had originally attracted his attention, only to find that she had disappeared. "Damn," he cursed under his breath. Finding Lucy along side Remy standing at the edge of the room, he wondered if either of them had seen the woman only to discover that they appeared too engaged with each other, while Obelia was having a conversation with another lovely lady. Distractions.

Finding Doe once again, he decided to trust his instincts and act. If he could keep things discreet, it would be great. Though he couldn't do anything to make the lady suspicious. Smoothly gliding between the dancers, he whispered a suggestion to the man, sending him out of the room for the night and taking the Doe into his arms. "I hope you don't mind the sudden change of partners, milady." Styxx focused on her eyes, trying to figure out what was so familiar about her. Maybe he had crossed her path in the streets and spoken to her for some time. "Lord Silas' presence was needed elsewhere, and I must admit I've been waiting to share a dance with you. You remind me of someone I once met." Smiling kindly at her, he stepped back, moving his hand away from her side, before guiding the mystery woman in an under arm turn. The movement allowed him a second to get a good look at her again, before they returned to the proper position.

"I only spoke to the woman for a few minutes, but she struck me as being very kind hearted and risked her health to help someone else. There was something gentle and meek about her, which I found intriguing." Abruptly, he gave a soft chuckle, briefly glancing at her profile. "I'm sorry, I'm sure you don't want to hear about her..." His hold on her tightened just enough for her to take notice of and if she tried to break the hold, she would only draw attention to herself. "Kyrinthis. I'm quite surprised to see you here. I'm not going to hurt you, I just want to talk. Won't you indulge me?"

  • "Can you now," Styxx murmured with a smile. As far as he was concerned, Kyrinthis couldn't last ten minutes in a fight. Sure, they had found her the same day they had escaped from Sector 13, but during the week leading up to the ball, he doubted she had been able to learn enough from the mages, depending on when she escaped, to be able to even begin to hold her own. The masked mage had said something about memories of their past lives being returned to them, but even then, her body probably wasn't used to having to fight. They were weak and needed shepherded like the sheep they were. And at the back of the herd was Kyrinthis, slowly limping along and always with the wolves nipping at her heels, just barely managing to escape.

His smile only darkened when she asked him what he did to her, and he dismissed the question, starting to move through the crowd and closer to one of the back doors and near the edge of the crowd and his weapons. "As long as the King is on the throne, no one can guarantee that you will be perfectly safe," he murmured, keeping his voice low so no one would overhear him and think he was speaking of treason or of over throwing the King. There was enough talk of rebellion in the streets and he wasn't trying to contribute to it. "But I can do a much better job than your current guardians."

Coming to a slow stop with her still in his arms, he dropped the rigid posture of the waltz, but didn't remove his hand from around her waist, keeping her close to him as if they were two lovers in an embrace. "I will let you go… but only if you can prove to me that you can take care of yourself," his smile faded to something almost tender as he looked at her, giving the impression that he really was confirmed for her well-being. "Face me alone. You can use whatever weapons or spells that you believe will give you an advantage. I won't use any spells or weapons of my own. If you win, I'll make sure you get out of the Palace alive," Clearly it was something that would get anger the King and probably Prince Brat, but he was a man of his word. If she won, he would do what he could to make sure she returned to Psykhe. "If I still manage to win, or simply not impressed by your skill… you'll hear me out. Are we agreed?"

He was surprised that she had agreed without trying to negotiate the terms of their arrangement, but there was a fire and determination that shone brightly in her eyes that warned him that this might not be as easy he thought it would be. Although Kyrinthis could just be overestimating her abilities. Leading her out of the ballroom, he paused for a moment to pick up his bow as he left the room. Though he promised her that he wasn't going to use his weapon, he did like to have it close to him just in case one of her friends came to help her. As soon as he entered the courtyard, he put the bow down again and stretched out his muscles, then assumed a defensive position and invited her to make the first move.

Danielle was quite enjoying her time with the gentleman who was talking to her about the painting in the ballroom. He was quite knowledgeable and patiently answering any questions she had. All in all, her night was turning out much better than she thought it would be, despite the fact that it wasn't Toma who was beside her. She'd tried to hold out as long as possible, waiting for him for that first dance. Instead, it had turned into her turning down several men who had approached her for a dance, only to finally accept the hand of Lord Anwar. Were she back on Earth, she would have found Toma and asked him to dance, but in this world, it was out of the question. She hadn't known how long he was expecting her to wait though. "You may be correct, Lord Anwar, but I believe the artist was trying to capture something more than simply the feeling of pride that comes after a military victory. Do you notice how the clouds are clearing up and become much lighter as the eye travels from left to right?" Danielle could get not further as Toma decided to approach at that moment.

Plastering on a smile, Danni turned to face him and gave a polite curtsey before he led her away from her new favourite companion. "You don't need to apologize, Toma. You were rather preoccupied..." Her eyes moved away from his, staring at something off to the side, her eyes only returning to his when she felt his hand on her waist and pulling her closer. Searching what she could see of his face, she wondered if he was upset that she'd given away the first dance to someone else. Danielle hoped that he wouldn't hold that against her. She'd be caught up in the moment and wanted to enjoy every second of it before it all went straight to hell. Psykhe and Mali had said something about the Riders being here and from the anecdotes she'd heard, she really didn't want them to come and spoil this ball. Yes, they were there for Anik, but it was also the first night they could just sit back and relax. They would be missing their prom and this was the closest thing they would ever have to it. At least for the moment.

                "May I have this dance?"

Blinking, Danielle pushed the thought away and refocused on the Prince in front of him. Maybe back home that title had never been associated with him, and given, rather, to a purple haired youth, Danni felt that it suited Toma quite well. Prince Toma... it still felt like a fairy tale and she couldn't stop the small giggle that escaped her, a blush colouring her cheeks moments afterwards. "Of course, Toma," she said confidently, letting him lead her in the dance, the entire moment feeling familiar. A thousand life times ago but still so clear. The room was different, the music was different, even the clothing was different. She could tell Toma was speaking to her and she was laughing, feeling nearly weightless and they glided across the dance floor. On her finger, the promise ring glinted in the light... tonight the ring was on a chain around her neck. Even after she'd admitted to Toma how she felt and even after she knew in her heart that they were to be engaged, she didn't have the heart to put it on. It felt like it was too soon, and they had hardly scratched the surface before Kyrinthis decided to show up again. Not that she was upset with the other girl. She just hadn't wanted to interrupt Toma while he was with another friend.

She had to stop thinking about that right now. Now she had him in her arms and she wasn't going to let anyone get in the way of that. But they did have a job to do. "Is Anik going to be okay? I saw you talking to the others while I walked off with Lord Anwar. Did you come up with a plan?"

  • With the barrier that surrounded her, Styxx knew that for the moment he wouldn’t be getting any closer to the temporarily paralyzed girl, but there was really no point. Catching his breath and watching her, he considered his next actions. According to their deal, she only had to listen to him, though she had thrown in a bit of a change before they had started to fight so maybe he could get away with adding a little extra to his part of the bargain. He was sure that she wouldn’t mind. ”You’re a good fighter, but you let your emotions get in the way,” he said easily, going to retrieve his mask, hardly concerned about what Kyrin could do to him. She showed little control over her powers other than using them defensively, and so far she didn’t seem to have the imagination necessary to do anything more than creature a solid wall to keep him out. ”The taunt was designed to see if you would lose control. You didn’t disappoint. If you’re going to last here, don’t let your opponent control you.” The advice was his one good deed of the day. Maybe Kyrin would see another? There was something about her, that determination to prove herself and what she was capable of despite the odds not being in her favour that reminded him of his sister. Someone he would never want to fall into the King’s hands. And least of all Mikhail. The prince was nothing more than an overgrown child and he couldn’t count on the Commander to keep Kyrinthis safe. There was something unnatural about Aniketos and how easily he seemed to agree with the King after only a week in his company.

Brushing the thought off, he picked up his weapons, slinging them over his shoulder again. The ball had just begun, but he really didn’t feel like going back into the ballroom right now. Sure he could use the opportunity to pick up dinner to go, but he had something else in mind. “If you stay with me, I’ll help you become a better fighter and I’ll keep you away from the King and his son. As much as the Commander claims he wants to keep you safe, he’s unable to fight against his father. And you really don’t want to fall into the hands of the other Riders.” Styxx grinned, walking closer to her and stooping down to her left, being mindful of her barrier and any sudden attacks she may think to throw at him, preparing his own magic barrier to repel anything that came his way. “I’ve never once done anything to hurt you, Kyrin and I swear to you that I would never do anything to harm you. Ask Psykhe. I always keep my word.” Maybe that wasn’t the best example after what had happened recently, but as far as he was concerned, Psy had deserved that. And at the end of the day, he hadn’t harmed her. Yes, she had been knocked unconscious because of the amount of energy he’d taken from her, but he would never kill her. He couldn’t. She knew that.

”Somehow I don’t think you’re going to accept my offer. As meek as you appear, there’s a fire in you.” There was an anger in her eyes, despite the state she was in, Kyrinthis was far from defeated. She seemed determined to prove that she could make it on her own. Maybe even prove that she wasn’t a burden to anyone. Styxx almost laughed. On the ground and unable to move she was vulnerable. Nothing more but a waiting target until feeling returned to her limbs. And seeing as she had some kind of healing power, he wasn’t sure just how long that would be, and he couldn’t wait around to find out. ”I’m sure you’ve discovered that this world is nothing like Sector 13, the world you came from,” he clarified uncertain if Psy or her friend had bothered to tell the children about the different worlds the portal lead to. ”Without help, you will die here. Swallow your pride and shape up. I defeated you without a spell and without a weapon. Just imagine what I could do to you if I had used either tool at my disposal. That ‘fight’ was pathetic. You show promise, but untrained as you are, you’d be easy pickings for any of the Riders.” Did anything that had happened during their brief time together count for anything? Or had Psy and her friends undone any headway he had tried to make with her. Styxx was certain he could have had her, and Toma, on the first day. Were it not for the mystery mage and Calcifer things would have gone quite differently. But maybe it was what was supposed to happen. Fate set things right in her own time. ”Come with me, and I’ll make sure you get out of here alive tonight.”

  • Kyrin was stubborn, though he shouldn't have been surprised; he didn't expect her to accept his request without an argument. "While I may not be able to keep you away from the King, Psykhe can. Believe me, I care nothing for the gem inside you. The only reason I am with the King is because he pays me more than Psykhe ever will in order to find you and assure your capture." Styxx didn't really believe he owed any of the Riders anything, least of all loyalty. His concern for Remus was only out of greed; Psy's soul was tantalizing and he would put up with even the most aggravating of the Riders in order to maintain his hold on it. However, he may just have to give that up for this plan to work. Sacrifices. Once this was over he would have to find some way of arranging a meeting with Psykhe to change the terms of their agreement. It would mean he would miss out on a guaranteed snack for as long as Remus was alive, but Kyrin.... Curse his human half! "If you really must know why I care, it is because you remind me of someone. And I don't want you, or the other woman, anywhere near the King, the Commander, or any of the other Riders - not even the child that is within our midsts." If that didn't make her any more relaxed, he wouldn't know what else he could say to convince her that he was concerned about her and not the gem she possessed.

The barrier inched its way closer to him as Kyrin moved inside of it and Styxx straightened and took a step back, looking down at her as she continued speaking. "Not to quote platitudes, but don't judge a book by its cover. I may be a Black Rider, but believe me, I will do what I consider to be the best route to get the job done. In this instance, what the King and Commander want, and what I want, are two different things." Styxx didn't intend to comment any further on the issue and if pressed he'd hold his peace; the castle walls had eyes and ears, even out here in the courtyard. Instead he watched as she tried to get to her feet. Kyrinthis was recovering faster than he thought she would and as much as he shouldn't be surprised it still caught him off guard. Was it because of the gem inside her or had he been too gentle initially? Still she was eager to prove that she was able to keep going. Did she know what she was getting into? How many times would have have to defeat her before she stayed down and listened to reason?

Face impassive when she spoke of being able to survive for a week on her own, his lips curved up into a smile when she challenged him again. "I will do what I can to assure your safety." Taking a step back, he palmed both daggers and prepared for when she lowered the shield. If Kyrin wanted to fight and prove that she was stronger than what he gave her credit, she would lower the shield. If not maybe she was better off being given to the King who would do with her as he pleased. "But as far as your friends go, I cannot promise you that. Like you said, I am a Black Rider and I do have a job to do." She was the only exception as far as the rule went and he did tend to protect what he considered his. "Just to speed things up, we'll both use magic this time. I'll even refrain from using any persuasion spells." The faster he proved to her that armed or unarmed, with or without magic, he could win, the better. Yes, this was something he'd been trained in almost all of his life, but if he believed the story that this pink haired girl was the same one who had been raised in Hentor all those years ago, the true princess of Plessa, then fighting should come just as easily for her as it did for him. For curiosities sake he wanted to draw that princess out of her and see what she was capable of, but if it turned out to be nothing, well... there was nothing loss. Waiting until she had lowered the barrier and was on her feet, Styxx gave Kyrin a moment to draw a weapon before he started towards her, both daggers flashing. Though not as skilled with melee weapons as Obelia, Styxx was confident that his skill level was high enough that he could defeat this princess.

Since arriving on Eryx earlier that morning, Balian had been able to encounter a few of the other Royals he would be spending the next few months with. The trip had been far longer than he would have liked, though he was relieved once the trip across the sea was over and he was back on solid ground; the constant rocking of the boat made him feel rather seasick, though he wouldn't dare admit it to anyone. Overall, the morning went by quite smoothly and he toured the grounds and the interior of the castle before going for dinner and preparing for the masquerade ball that was being thrown by the Council to welcome them to the island. Thus far, he had yet to meet any of the council members, though after asking one of the servants, he'd been told that everyone would be meeting the Council representative the next day at breakfast. That was something he was looking forward to much more than this ball.

Arriving in his room after dinner, he found a suit, two pairs of gloves, a mask, and a note resting on his bed. Reading the note, he raised an eyebrow at the incredulous statement about the mask being enchanted in such a way that it would hide his appearance from all but the castle staff and his sister. Picking up the simple gold and black, he looked it over not seeing anything special about it. Despite what it read in the note, he had his doubts that it would perform as promised; magic of the kind found on Eryx was unknown in Savona and Orien as far as he knew. Walking over to the mirror, Balian held the mask over his face and studied his reflection, seeing his once silver-white hair turn an unremarkable brown with eyes to match. How intriguing. He really had to study this form of magic while he was here. It would be useful to him when dealing with some stubborn nobles in Savona.

Putting the mask down, Balian took his time getting changed, choosing the white gloves, then carefully tying the mask in place. He still couldn't get used to his new appearance as it was somewhat disorienting and almost wished the mask wouldn't fool his eyes as well as those of everyone else in the castle. Smoothing out his clothing once more, Balian left his room and casually strolled down to the ballroom. As much as he wished there had been more warning about the ball, it was a good opportunity to learn more about the other royals who were present and as much as he believed they would make use of this occasion in very much the same way, he wondered how easy it would be to fit names to disguised faces when he saw them later. Balian was still wondering how he would present himself to the group in the ballroom and whether or not it would be worth the effort to disguise himself once more for this event. It would take a certain level of concentration to keep up the façade and it would be just as easy to let all masks fall away and devote the majority of his energy to discovering what he could about everyone. It had been a long a tiring day, and not letting that show could come back to harm him as the night wore on.

Balian entered the ballroom, noting that he was the first to appear. He wasn't that eager to participate in the masquerade, but maybe the others were even more exhausted than he was. If that was the case, maybe the Zenzare royals and their servant wouldn't appear and ruin the ball with their presence. A look of disgust crossed his features for a brief second before he smoothed it away into an expression of neutrality, and went to wait for the others along the side of the room, looking out the windows into the gardens beyond. If he could avoid seeing anyone from Zenzare tonight or having to dance with one of the women from that murderous kingdom it would be so much the better.

  • One long blink later and he was gone. The familiar smile and kind eyes fading to a look of concern. "Are you alright, milady? You look like you've seen a ghost." Maybe that's all it was. A ghost. A name that was too familiar, silky white hair that reminded her of a time long ago. Another man she had once known. "I... I need some air," she murmured, coming to a stop and being supported by her dance partner who's arms wrapped protectively around her. The man escorted her out to a balcony for some fresh air, apologizing for something he said previously, but whatever it was, Danielle didn't hear it. Her mind was still whirling, caught up in the twirling colours dancing around her and very slowly coming to a standstill. Still a bit out of it, Danni stumbled, bumping into a blonde man who was with three others, including Mali. Maybe that was Mali. She wasn't sure. Muttering her apologies for interrupting the group, the man helped her stay on her feet as they continued outside, where she fell into a chair, shaking.

The memories from the past were strong. They were disorienting and confusing. Worst of all they came when she least expected them, and were so vivid she could have sworn they were real. That she could reach out and touch them. The dance had been real, the man standing over her and speaking to her was real. "Are you going to be alright?" Focusing on the man who had accompanied her outside she smiled and nodded, even if she didn't fully believe it herself. "I just need a moment." It was his name that triggered the memory. Thomas.... A variation of the name was Tomas. The boy she had been in love with. Danielle frowned. No, that wasn't entirely true. Tomas was the boy her Hentor self had been in love with. The one who gave her the ring she wore around her neck. Absently she reached up to touch the ring on the chain, a motion that was eerily familiar.

A moment later, Thomas left to go get her a drink after asking her one more time if she would be okay on his own. He claimed that she still looked rather pale and hoped a drink would brink more colour to her face. Danni gave him a shaky smile and a nod of thanks. She felt sick, her body trembled once she was alone with her thoughts. When would the memories stop? The bits and pieces of her past life were blurry and fragmented. It often felt like she was staring into a pile of broken, bumpy, glass. The image was distorted. She needed clarity! The lack of it was frustrating! It felt like someone was smothering her. She couldn't breathe, she couldn't see. It felt like the night when Mali had come to get her and awoken her from that dream. It was happening again! She wanted to scream and forget any of that ever happened. Maybe even go back home and pretend that this had all be nothing more than a dream when she opened her eyes. Her Dad would be there and her two brothers would be fighting again and she would be trying to stop them.

Opting to remove her mask and gulp in the cool night air like she was starving for it, she pinched her arms only to have the scene remain the same. She should have stayed behind with Will or asked Mali if she could leave when she had the chance. This night was too much. Anik was with Cal and Feli who were better suited to help him. Kyrin was... She'd lost track of Kyrin... during the early excitement of the ball. Where was she? And Psy? Maybe they were off together somewhere. Kyrin would be well protected tonight after everything she had already been through. But what if she wasn't? What if she had been left all alone? Placing the mask back on her face, Danielle stood shakily on her feet and started to make her way back inside. She would find the others, make sure everyone was okay. With the danger Mali and Psykhe were talking about, if one of them was alone it probably wasn't such a good thing.

A scowl was sent Damian's way when he ruffled her hair. It had taken her forever to get this look. Smoothing down her hair Letty hoped that it wasn't so bad that she would have to remove the braids from her hair. Giving him a slight nod to let him know she agreed with the plan since it was the best they had for now, she watched as he hurried out when he was called and a soft sigh left her lips. Alex wasn't any closer to waking up and neither Damian nor Demitrio seemed to know anything about it. So much for teenagers knowing everything. They just pretended to have everything under control and know exactly what was needed every other time questions were asked of them. But maybe it was just the whimsical questions they could answer and not the more serious questions were there could be all sorts of possible answers and other problems would would follow.

Slowly the others started to trickle out of the room: first Riley, then Damian, and finally Demetrio walked out after giving some words of wisdom, leaving her alone with Alex and Wyn. A small frown marred her features, her brow lined with worry. What happened if Alex didn't wake up? While it wasn't good to dwell on the negatives, Letizia would stupid not to admit that the possibility did exist. From what she could see, her sister was still breathing and Damian had checked for and found a pulse. She was just in a really deep sleep. All the noise and commotion didn't wake her up though… so what would? Letty wanted Alex to wake up faster. Wake up now! And even if that wasn't entirely possible, she wanted some sign that her sister was okay. Maybe the events of the past few days had caught up to her and she was just exhausted. Maybe that was all it was and they shouldn't worry. Once her body caught up on the missed sleep, Alex would be up and trying to make her share her things with Nico again.

Speaking of, did Wyn say something about the hyperactive ball of energy who was so often the source of her headaches? Blinking and coming out of her thoughts, she turned bright blue eyes towards her friend. "They're playing a game…" she repeated dumbly, unable to believe her ears. His older sister who had taken care of him and protected him was lying on the couch, unable to wake up and he was running around with Melly playing a game? While she knew she should be happy that Nico was okay, Letizia was angry. Once again Niccolo was able get by without having to worry about anything. He didn't know how hard things had been before the Harpers. How they had to look after each other so that none of them were taken away! And while things were getting easier, obviously the Harpers were hiding something from them. After everything that happened, how they seemed so prepared, there was something fishy about that. Kinda like that feeling when she heard about a company and something about it didn't sit well with her.

"She'll wake up… Alex is strong like your sister." A nod as if to confirm the validity of what she was saying, then she looked towards her bag that was still on the ground and the bag that was still on Wyn's shoulders. "Let's get our things unpacked then get a snack." And before the snack she was going to find her little brother. He couldn't be off playing at a time like this! "I don't know about you, but I'm starving!" One final glance at her sleeping sister, and a silent prayer offered up to who or whatever could hear her to make Alex open her eyes quickly, before she turned, offering Wyn, a small smile of thanks before leading him out of the room. Just his presence was enough of a distraction that hopefully she wouldn't start pulling out her hair in worry.
