- Horacio’s hands carefully glided through the black and white keys, pressing down carefully but quickly before moving onto the next. A single or sometimes blended note would follow with each press blending together to form a melody. However, today Horacio was simply not feeling it. The notes came out bland, they combined to form a melodic chaos. Stopping Horacio gave a deep sigh. It really was bothering him he decided. Taking his fingers of the keys he stared distantly into the window to the side of the room. Thinking, pondering and lamenting.
Normally right now he would be observing the morning students, today was a rather good opportunity to do so. A self-study day meaning he could get data he might not get on any other occasion. So why was he alone in the music club room? Well, he wasn’t in the mood to watch others right now. A surprising thing for him as playing the role of the observer meant he should always be watching. But right now his mind was in a messy state and he was in no state to observe properly. Perhaps he was simply getting sick? The weather recently hasn’t been too bright; maybe that was it, a change of mood with the change of weather. Silly. Of course that wasn’t it, he wasn’t melodramatic like that. Horacio regarded himself as a rather simple person when it came to his emotions. He as either indifferent or different. That was it. No other options. So just what was bothering him so much?
Horacio already knew the answer to that question, it had to be that right?
The that, that is being referenced was the events that transpired yesterday in the Nurse’s office. Why was he there? Horacio could not remember anymore as what occupied his memory was the event, not the cause. A word was said, one that was foreign to him and one that instantly brought on a strong wave of curiosity. ‘Love’. That single word has now consumed him to a degree that nothing ever has before. What was it? The nurse became quite flustered upon uttering it to not only him but other students as well! Some of them his own classmates though he knew all by name from his observations. If it hadn’t been for the nurse’s reaction he would not have taken interest. But apparently the word is taboo of some kind. Of what kind he did not know but that alone was the cause of this curiosity. A mystery. A rather elusive one at that. He had tried doing a little research last night but he came up with nothing.
”Love.” Horacio carefully repeated the word as he heard it.
It felt strange to even say it from his mouth, foreign, even perhaps illegal. Like the word itself should never be uttered today. That sent a small thrill down his spine, he felt like he was uncovering something long forgotten, something interesting, oh what a time to be alive. A small smile curved on his lips, a rare moment, unlucky no one was there to see it. It disappeared shortly after.
Horacio looked at the time and noticed he was running a little late, the music club members would be arriving soon and while he himself was a member, he rarely made himself appear in front of them. Carefully setting the lid over the keys, he made the room look the same as when he arrived. No one would know that Horacio had been here at all. Just how Horacio would have it. Leaving the music club room he headed down the hallways. It was mostly empty as most students would be in class or the library studying hard. Horacio didn’t find the need to study. His grades were good. Not fantastic, but good enough. He didn’t want his grades too good as that would draw attention to himself and he certainly did not need that! An observer must never be the one to be observed.
Like a ghost, he moved through the hallways, never once alerting or drawing eyes towards himself. It was something he learned how to do when he was young. Being able to be in a spot and make his presence so minute that no one would notice him unless they were looking directly at him to begin with. He had almost made it to class when his eyes picked up on a annoying female at the entrance, just arriving herself. Viaa Ghrey, just thinking her absurd name made his forehead throb a little.
Well, some context might be handy. When Horacio first arrived in the school, he decided he would start off small with his observations. Take on small projects before he extended himself to greater goals. Upon a little research he decided his first target would be a simple book worm, her name of course was Viaa Ghrey. Opinionated, known-it-all bookworm that should have an easy start for him. But no. To use an apt analogy never judge a book by its cover. It will only lead to said book being thrown in your face, literally..
Horacio had done studies on Viaa’s movement patterns and found she was most often or not in the library reading, as suited for her bookworm persona. On one day he finally decided to start observing her. He had sat himself two desks away at a perfect and calculated angle that he could observe her clearly yet be able to hide himself if necessary. Things were going smoothly when at random times, Viaa would turn around and gaze his way. By then of course Horacio had already hidden himself. It was a shock to him. He was rarely noticed, once was okay, but twice, thrice, five times she would turn and gaze his way as if she knew he was watching her. It was infuriating but he simply thought it was coincidence. That she didn’t see him. That she didn’t know he was there. But on the sixth time, she did not simply just turn back. But a book came flying his way and hit him square on the forehead. On a cold day, one could still make out the faint imprint left by it. ’Encyclopaedia Volume I, C – U’.
Admittedly, he has never tried to observe her again. For he did not know how to, that woman had some form of magic that detected him. Something he had not developed a defence against yet. For a simple bookworm she had turned out more complicated than he anticipated.
Waiting for her to go in first, he followed in shortly after. The class was relatively empty; Aretmesia, Viaa and Clementine were there. Now that he thought about it, that was three people whom like him, shared a particular event yesterday. A thought occurred that maybe one of them would know more? But would require having to talk to them however and he has never done more than basic interactions with any of them besides the exception of Viaa. Of which he would rather die than ask for help. Sighing, he might have to get closer to some of them. The path to knowledge is indeed a thorny path, but one he must cross if he hopes to reach something interesting.
Horacio quickly moved to his seat in the classroom, at the very back, in the corner. Of course this was once more planned carefully by him. It gave him the optimal ability to observe his classmates without really being noticed much. Setting his back on his table he pulled out two book and a pencil. The book was Mathematics, Complex Integrals. While his other one was his notebook. Ostensibly he was to be studying but of course that was simply a guise. No time in the day for integrals, he would begin observing. His eyes darted between Aretmesia and Clementine mostly. The two of them seemed close, their exact relationship was unknown to him at the moment which meant now he could fill out that missing entry. Perfect.
But of course, in the back of his mind he was still rather distracted at what this love thing was. But he could multi-task. Observing didn’t take too much effort really.
’Love, just what is it’.
