Gaia Online is proud to announce Gaia Homes!
With Gaia Homes comes yet another extension to customizing your experience here on Gaia. Now, not only can you get and customize clothing and accessories for your avatar, you can also choose a house that you can customize with all sorts of stuff like furniture, lamps, accessories, wallpaper and carpet.

Aekea
This is the new town in which you can find all your home's needs. It is located east of Barton Town. To get there, simply click on MAP in the navigation bar and click on the right arrow three times.

Crate & Apparel
Our newest clothing store. You'll notice that all of the clothing from each shop has been reorganized for this new release. Certain items that used to be in other shops may appear here.

The Faktori
The Faktori is where you'll be able to buy all of your home's needs. Within the Faktori, there are 3 shops along with 3 new NPC's. By default, you will be in Bildeau's room. He will sell you Wall and Floor tiles. To his right, Bloudeau will sell you all kinds of furniture. To his left, Ribateau will sell you wall dressings.

Aekea Housing Commission
In the Housing Commission, Josie will help you select a home. To get started, select a home style. If you choose to, you can then upgrade your home by 50%, of course that doesn't come without a price...

Getting Started with Gaia Housing
Here's a step by step process on how to get started with housing. Please take the time to read this guide, as it will help you understand what is going on each step of the way.

1. Select a Home Style from the Aekea Housing Commission.
There are currently three home styles to choose from, which determine the outside look of your house. All initial homes are free, and are the same size. Once you've received your home, you need to get furniture for it.

2. Purchase some furniture from The Faktori.
Head over to The Faktori and pick up some furniture to suit your style. Don't forget to get some tiles for both your wall and floor or you'll be stuck with a plain concrete interior.

3. Visit your profile and load up your Suitcase.
The profile has been revamped with this release, with a major new feature. Clicking on My Home will take you to your "Suitcase." Your suitcase determines what you are bringing with you into your home. You can load the furniture, tiles, and accessories that you just purchased, as well as normal items. You can even bring your friends' avatars with you!

One major note:
When an item is placed in your Suitcase (then in your home) it will become inaccessable on the rest of the site. Putting an item into your suitcase will "lock" it (you can tell if an item is locked if it appears to be grayed out). To access the item later(for vending, trading, selling, etc), you have to remove it from your suitcase which will effectively remove it from your home(if it were saved there). If an item is grayed out in either the Customize Me page, or the My Home / Suitcase page, it means that that item is either a) already equipped on your avatar or b) saved inside of your home. Also, if an item is grayed out *in* the suitcase, it means that it is an item that is currently saved in your house. You can unlock it by clicking on it, but remember that it will also remove it from your house as well.
After your suitcase is loaded up, you can now enter your home by clicking on the Arrange My Home button below your suitcase. Before you do, please make sure you have Shockwave Version 10 installed in your browser. Once inside, you can now...

4. Customize your home.

Placing items in your room
Click the Inventory palette to view your items. Click and drag an item to place it in your house. Some items such as small lamps, plants and gaia general items can be placed on desks, tables, and shelves.

Rotating and removing items
Click an item to select it, then use the green rotate or red remove button. You may also drag an item out of your room and let go to remove it. Removing an item will put it back into your inventory palette.

Customizing floor and walls
Click Tiles and select which surface you want to edit. The three surfaces are left wall, right wall, and floor. Each tile may have up to 5 different tiling styles which can change the way a tile can affect the surface.

Adding you and your friends
Click the User Icon to open the friends palette. Drag you and your friends into your room.

Working with lighting
If you have a light in your inventory, place it in your room. Click View to switch to view mode and click on the lights to turn them on and off. Click the Global light icon to turn global lighting on and off. This is how your room will look when others view it.

Clearing your room
Click Clear Room to clear the contents of your room back into the inventory palette. This cannot be undone, so be careful when using this option.

Blend Mode
Click the Eye to make all your items transparent. Click again to make all items invisible, and again to return to normal. This is useful for arranging objects in your room without obstructing your view.

Saving your room
Click Save when you are happy with your design
5. View your house and others.
The profile bar across the site has changed, with new smaller icons to represent the many aspects of your profile. For Gaia Housing, there will be a house icon in a user's profile bar if they have set up a house. Clicking on this icon will let you view their room!

6. We hope you enjoy Gaia Homes. As with any release, we will be working to fix any new bugs that may arise from this launch as swiftly as possible. Thanks for your patience and support!
House save is now fixed
We've fixed an issue that was preventing house saves. Please try it now, and let us know if you see any issues with it.

Thanks!

A few users have been alarmed that they may be receiving a trojan or spyware when installing Shockwave. In actuality, you're not getting anything bad being installed in your system. Though, if you want to prevent any of the alarms of your anti-virus/spam blockers, follow these instructions.

When installing Shockwave, be sure that you do not let it install Google/Yahoo Toolbar. Toolbars are known to send info packets to whatever company created that toolbar. Your spam/virus blocker will most likely pick up these info packets and report them as a "trojan" or "data miner." As another user also pointed out, do not install the Weatherbug plug-in as well. That program communicates to another service which will also set off your spam/virus blocker in the same manner. Also, after Shockwave is installed, do not enable "automatic updates." If you do so, it wil periodically check for updates for your Shockwave plug-in which will also set off your spam/virus blocker.

If you are careful about the details on every page of the Shockwave Installer, you should never have to worry about getting "extra" stuff installed that you don't need.
