Being in college (and being a theatre major) has me reading a ton of plays this semester. So far I've read

"Death of a Salesman" Arthur Miller
"Midsummer Night's Dream" Shakespeare
"Importance of Being Earnest" Oscar Wilde
"Oedipus Rex" Sophocles
"The Glass Menagerie" Tennessee Williams

So far they've all been enjoyable for their own reasons xd This week's assignments are "A Doll's House" (Henrik Ibsen) and "The Cherry Orchard" (Anton Chekhov).

I actually am quite attached to the Eragon series now. It's pretty good. I'm only a couple chapters into The Historian. Intriguing, so far. I'm going to try to read two books at a time. A coworker told me that A Great and Terrible Beauty was good. And so far-13 chapters in-I agree. I took a whole bunch of books of my list that I honestly would probably never read, so I've got it down to 300 right now.

Goal:20
Date Entered: Feb. 22/09

Currently reading: The Naming by Alison Croggon*currently on hiatus, I just can't get into it just yet sweatdrop *

Finished Reading:
New Moon by Stephanie Meyer (don't judge me) - Yeah, this book was kind of a dirge. The main character Bella spends the vast majority of the book - over 500 pages long- feeling sorry for herself. I have come to the conclusion that Edward is the most interesting character in the series, and that's not saying much. Twilight wasn't as bad as this, really. It's ironic that I'm writing such a negative review, because it really annoys me when I see endless amounts of Twilight haters on the internet. Now, after reading New Moon, I can sympathize with them.

Emma by Jane Austen - A book about a girl who wants her friends to find love, completely forgetting about herself. This book could be a be "wordy" at times, but considering the fact that it was written in 1813, it wasn't that hard to read. Almost like the 19th century's version of Gossip Girl - with less reprehensible behaviour xd

The City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau - I loved this book. A very interesting concept that makes you appreciate the world. I almost cried at one scene near the end sweatdrop
This book reminded me of The Giver by Lois Lowry, which I also loved

Flyte by Angie Sage - Likable characters, with the perfect mixture of darkness and light humoured magical fun.

Scar Night by Alan Campbell - My friend's favourite book, she's been trying to get as many people as possible to read it. As she should, it was an amazing book!

Book Count: (5 of 20) I may have to shorten this, we'll see how I'm doing by the end of the summer before I do so.

I've been keeping track of the books I've been reading myself for the last year, I guess I'll have to continue that here! biggrin

Thoughts on The Handmaid's Tale:

This story is within the Dystopian genre. Usually, I don't like these kind of stories. I did enjoy 1984 but I wasn't interested in any other books in the genre. This book was enjoyable, but probably not in my top 10 favorites. It's an interesting story of our society becoming hyper-religious to the point where the women are divided by whether or not they can have children. Those who can't are sent away to work in camps very similar to the concentration camps. I was slightly frustrated with not knowing how the fall of society into this one came about, but I could understand the lack of details since the young woman who is telling the story doesn't know how it happened. All-in-all, a very interesting read.
