Dear Users,
The Item Normalization project is now complete.

Item Normalization is a complete overhaul of the code that controls your inventory, Gold, and Gaia Cash. Any feature that gives you Gaia Gold (almost all of them) will be affected: the Bank, Marketplace, Daily Chance, Gold for surfing, games, etc, etc.

While this project will improve stability and security and let us do more cool things with items in the long run, this is largely an update to the site's inner workings, and you probably won't notice anything different when it's done. For more technical information, please check out DARKNRGY's journal entry on the subject.

Since this is a pretty massive code change, we'll need to completely close the site for a short time in order to tinker with stuff. Here's the tricky part: When the site comes back online, ALL trades and Marketplace listings will have been canceled. All gift boxes created before the maintenance will be opened and replaced with the item they contain (this does NOT include rare event boxes, the OMG box, etc.). You will not lose any of your Gold, Cash or items, of course.

The site will be down for tinkering from 1:00 AM to 6:00 AM (Pacific time) on July 7th (technically Monday morning, but most people would consider it Sunday night). During this period, the whole site will be completely disabled, so don't get scared if you just see an error message when you try to visit Gaia.

You may want to try to settle all your outstanding trades before the maintenance, and avoid giving any new gifts close to the time of the site update. You might also consider limiting the time of your new Marketplace auctions so you don't end up having to relist a bunch of stuff. We apologize for the annoyance this might cause.

FAQ:

What will be different when the site comes back?
This is mostly just internal code. When the site returns, everything should look pretty much the same, except for a few small differences in the Inventory Arranger: if you have an item equipped, either on your avatar or in your house, the item will not show up in the Arranger's list. Don't worry, they haven't disappeared. Also, game items will show up in the "all" list now, but they'll appear with the little 'lock' icon next to them, meaning that you won't be able to move them around.

What happens if everything gets messed up?
In the unlikely event that we run into substantial issues (i.e. people losing a bunch of Gold and items), we'll automatically restore everyone's inventories/Gold/Cash to just how it was before we released the new code. It'll be just as if nothing ever happened. We're hoping we don't have to do this.

Will the Item Normalization process affect my hacking or scamming report?
Absolutely not! We will still be able to investigate complaints of hacking or scamming even if your report was filed prior to the Item Normalization update. These changes will not cancel or invalidate your reports.

Where can I report bugs and issues?
We'll set up an item normalization bug report thread in the Site Feedback forum, and we'll watch it closely over the coming weeks.

If you have any further questions or concerns about this downtime, the cancellation of Marketplace listings or anything else related to Item Normalization, please feel free to post them in this thread in the Site Feedback forum.
