(Sengoku Basara anime discussion may be found over here!)

Sengoku Basara is a hack and slash series by Capcom, taking place in but taking great liberties with the Sengoku period of Japanese history. Capcom borrowed the concept made very popular by Koei's Dynasty Warriors and gave it a twist:

Hiroyuki Kobayashi
We took the concept, and said, "What can we do to differentiate this to make this different from the Dynasty Warriors games?" And we decided the secret maybe lay in some other games Capcom has done. We said, "Let's give the characters a kind of Devil May Cry flair -- some really cool moves, like the kind of things you might see in Devil May Cry. Let's the characters and make them all vastly and distinctly different from one another, like Street Fighter II."

So no "omg ripoff!!" replies please, since they have given credit where credit was due. heart

Note: You can discuss Devil Kings, but as I have never played it (and never will) and it is drastically different from the original game, I can't guarantee any responses regarding it.

Ahh, good not-quite old Sengoku Basara 2. The source of hours of fun and rapidly vanishing daylight time into the darkness of the night. Good fun. Good fun. Too bad the first installment was ported over and "dumbed down" for us Americans by Capcom. XP Thanks a lot, big corp.

If there is one thing I like about the game it is that it never really takes itself too seriously. There are moments where it is pretty emotional concerning a character or two, but other than that it is historical figures portrayed in a humorous and fun, yet cool, manner. Of course there are those who still manage to suck, but you can still have lots of fun making fun of them. surprised I know I have.

I'd almost wish the game had a two-player mode, but then that might make it a little less fun because conversations might start overlapping and not match up. There is plenty going on as you pummel hordes of opponents to keep one with even a smattering of Japanese entertained for a loooooong time. xd ;

I think there's going to be versus in Heroes? I'm not sure how that's going to work out.

The last time I played as Sasuke, versus Keiji... for some reason Keiji was singing. xd ;; What?? So many random things happen.

Question.

I know that the PS3 is region free, but seeing as these are Japanese PS2 games, will the Region Lock still be a problem if I import them?

I... don't really like Devil Kings too much.

I don't own a PS3 nor do I plan on it, but I'm thinking if it is region free then you should be able to play import games without a problem. Don't take that as a solid reply, though, since I've never even touched a PS3. Perhaps someone else could clarify that actually owns one and has tried.

Considering I gave my PS2 as a gift for my sister and have -no- idea how to mod that PS2 myself, I figure that this could be the only way I could enjoy the series how it's meant to be. I can wait a bit more; all else fails, I'll try to restart my own research again.

Speaking of Devil Kings, has 2 ever been given a release date for the US? I heard it was not coming out for the UK though.

I really hope they don't. xd ;; I haven't heard anything about it, but thinking about what kind of "nicknames" they'd come up with for characters like Keiji and err, Hanbei makes my head hurt a little.

Though I think that's more likely than a version closer to the original. gonk Bah.

I have a few additions to make to the above character descriptions:

Masamune: Seems to be surrounded by pantsless men.

Nouhime: Has way too much fun with a gattling gun.

Shingen: Somehow manages to get really, really high up in the sky.

Kenshin: Secretly bald under that wrap.

Itsuki: pigtailed loli with a fanclub

Yoshihiro: stinky mrgreen

Kojuurou: vegetable enthusiast

Nagamasa: The original Power Ranger.

Oichi: hot ninja

Okay, so some of those are inside jokes, but all seem appropriate to me. xd

Dapper Tactician

I'd like to play them some day; it looks really fun.

I'll probably try Katakura Kojuurou first, if I start with a game where that's possible. Most of them look worthwhile, though.

Well... maybe not the annoying mecha of Zabii sweatdrop

Well, if the Region Lock/Region Free thing doesn't work for me, then it's the only thing I can get XD.

The only great thing about the English adaptation in my opinion was the cast; they got almost everyone from Beast Wars (except Scott ;_ wink , so it was at least good.

I can't wait to play the sequel, though...
