9pm broadcast! Interview with MadBoyV1!
Today, we’ve got the goods on MadBoyV1! As far as I know, he's one of those folks who hang around the Q&F, answering queries from newbies and the like. Recently, he has started a campaign to get rid of all the old, unused accounts. He’s got two threads running right now: one in the Q&F and one in General Discussion. With 72% percent of votes in favour deactivating old, unused accounts, it's pretty sure to say that this is something that most users of Gaia agree on.
Firstly, please tell us a bit about who you are and where you’re from!
Well I come from Montgomery County in Maryland, USA. I was more or less forced into Gaia by my friends, and after a little while, I found myself hooked, on almost everyday.
What made you want to front this movement?
Well I found that more and more people were complaining about not being able to get their desired name. This movement was also marked by my discovery of how many users had not posted. On February 10, 2004, there were 155,990 accounts that had 0 posts, approximately one half of all the users of Gaia. You can quote me on those figures.
Why do you think that there are so many unused accounts?
Well there are two probable reasons why there are accounts that I consider inactive. The first is that people did not get an activation email, or had it sent to a nonexistent email, accidentally or otherwise. The other reason being that already active users activated mule accounts, or people activated accounts for the soul purpose to collect special event items, more specifically, the Gaian Ball, where there was a spike in the number of new accounts.
What is your opinion on mule accounts? Do you think users should have multiple accounts?
If people think their account is a possible target of anything, or that they don’t want the clutter of all those items, then they should be careful to consider if they really want to have a mule account, but they should use it as an actual character every now and then But if it's not neccassary, they should not make a mule account. About multiple accounts, I personally have a second account, but I use it often as another character to RP with, sometimes even having a dialog with the two characters. Besides that, I do not condone the activation of more than 2 accounts for the sake of collecting the starting gold and/or the collecting of special items from events like Halloween, Christmas, and The Gaian Ball.
What is/are the most annoying thing(s) about Gaia?
Well being an active user in the Q & F forum, I find quites a few things annoying:
- People not reading stickies that most likely can answer their questions.
- People who spam and/or post in the wrong place.
- And people who didn’t follow other rules that were set before the new ToS (Thanks Admins!)
Are there any other petitions that you support or other issues that you think should be raised/supported/shafted?
Well… *thinks* I have not really seen any other outstanding petitions that should be supported. No really, I think my petition is the only active petition at the moment.
What do you think about the personals?
Oh the Personals. The Personals? I spent about 4 hours a few days ago finding and reporting illicit ads in the personals? I personally think that at the moment, the entire Personals section is completely out of control. It is true that some people do use the Personals to meet new people and to find people to talk to, but in the past month or so, there has been an exponential growth in ads unsuitable for Gaia. Now that the ToS has been established, I hope that the Moderators will crack down on these users and overall restore the Gaia Personals back to what I remember it to be when I joined in October.
If you were to have a heart-to-heart with Lanzer, what would you say to him?
Well the first and last thing I would do in a heart to heart conversation with Lanzer, would be thanking him for making my Gaia Experience most pleasurable. I would probably try to discuss his future aspects of Gaia, possibly the new features that I?ve only heard rumors about. But then again, just meeting him would be more than enough?
What upcoming functions/events are you looking forward to most? Like new items, buddy lists, upcoming balls, etc.
Well I had my fill at the Official Gaian Ball on the 18th, but I’m looking forward to my birthday coming up on the 4th of March, as well as the upcoming buddy list. I also can’t wait till the new donation Items, which I have now been actively collecting.
What month's donation item did you like the most? The least? What would you like to see in the future?
I don?t really have a favorite or a least favorite donation item, though the nightmare scarf works very well with a lot of costumes. I hope to see in the future perhaps more glasses, and possible thins to go on the right hands and sides, where as most items for the hand or side have been on the left.
What are some of your favorite threads and/or forums to visit?
Well, after a few mishaps at a few threads, I’ve been hanging out in the Q & F Forum, and occasionally trying to get my new shop off the ground in the Mini-shops sub forum, though I do still check all my guilds, which take up an incredible amount of space on my Sig site.
Who are some of your favorite musicians and songs?
You know? I don?t really have a favorite artist, for that I myself am a musician. I have played trumpet for 8 years, and I enjoy orchestrated music, most noticeably the current piece that I am playing with the band, Jan Van Der Roost?s ?Puszta?, a very lively Prussian song. Other than that, I am addicted to Anime music in general, owning more than 60 Anime CD?s, and having a total library of over 4,500 songs and Romaji lyrics to most of the vocal pieces. I blame myself for being Half-Japanese, and My Father's obsession of Anime for my collection.
