Hi.

So, I'm about to take taekwondo, and as much as I would love to learn just about any martial arts, I'm really scared to do that, too. . .

Does somebody mind helping me?

I've no information on the school, other than I'm taking it through the college.

What organization is this particular Tae Kwon Do instructor affiliated? If its an ATA(American TaeKwonDo Association) affiliate, I would highly advise against receiving instruction from them as they have a horrible reputation. WTF(World Tae Kwon Do Federation) has solid and consistent instruction....so you'd be straight if they are WTF affiliates....unless, of course, you're looking for more fuller contact sparring...in which case I'd ditch TKD all together(unless you're lucky enough to find a dojang that has fuller contact sparring, i.e. leg kicks, equal emphasis on kicking AND punching, etc). ITF(International Tae Kwon Do Federation) affiliates are sort of a toss up, they can produce some great dojangs, with full contact sparring and equal emphasis on punching and kicking....or they can have crap dojangs that spar once in a blue moon...and only do point sparring(which from a self-defense perspective is completely and utterly useless).

Don't be afraid to ask the instructors questions about their curriculum, affiliation, rank, etc. If they're legit, they'll answer your questions without hesitation....if they seem to get offended, nervous, or try to dodge your questions...its usually a sign that they're not legit and you don't wanna waste your money on their instruction.

Well, I'm in a special program called Running Start, and I'm using this to finish up my PE credits. ( I could of graduated from high school as a junior this year. . . But my school doesn't like people graduating early) And anyway, I'm not paying for any of it. I'm also taking some weird dancing class, but that's beside the point.

I'm not sure. I just saw it and went, "Hey! I've always wanted to do this." So I requested the class and they decided to let me take it.

So. . . Yeah. I'll try to look up some stats tonight and see where it is and who runs it.

Thank you for the tips, though. ^^

I've been training in Mixed Martial Arts for about two years now. And for those two years I've accumulated an amateur record of 22-6-2. I'm currently dropping down to the lightweight division (146 to 155 lbs) from the middleweight division (171 to 185 lbs). I'm well rounded in striking, wrestling, and grappling. That's the great thing about mixed martial arts: you don't study one thing and it combines the best things from combative sport. Or at least that my opinion.

Lol Im glad you agree xD

So like you guys are talking about in the other martial art thread, are you training JKD as a style like every one does the same thing or do you all develop your own ways of doing it in the class?

Also what is Shootfighting? i have not heard of that before.

Shootfighting is a stlye of submission wrestling. Think Ken and Frank Shamrock

+ striking....its more akin to MMA than anything.

Bruce Lee was an innovator in martial arts. He breathed new life into it. He did what those old Chinese kung fu movies and mixed martial art did. Get people interested again. Not only that he was a excellent and humble fighter. He died too young and was not able to properly preserve his legacy.

Against Gracie, Bruce Lee wouldn't allow the fight to be taken to the ground, and if it did, have you ever heard of his one-inch punch?

Just reread this part. You do realize that to do a proper one inch punch you need proper hip movement(not just arm and shoulders)...which is near impossible when you're on your back(seeing as how the GROUND limits the movement of your hips when it comes to striking)....even if Lee was in Gracie's guard, he'd have a better chance of regular ol' ground and pound than pulling off a one inch punch.

Like Gracie said once, "Get in the ring with a black belt, hit him once, he a brown belt. Hit him again and he a purple belt."

And realize this is a Gracie quote.
