It's possible that if the Giants get into the playoffs they could heat up like they did two years ago. But like you said, it's extremely unlikely that they'll get very far. Their defense is nothing, absolutely nothing like it was two years ago. Green bay has all but secured the 5th spot. And the 49ers might be someone to keep an eye on. They need some things to happen, but could sneak into the 6th spot if the Giants, Cowboys and others in the playoff hunt falter during the last 3 games. The Niners have a tough game against Philly, but then play St. Louis and Detroit.
I am actually impressed by the Giants offense this season, and the linebackers and defensive line have been playing decent. But their defensive secondary and special teams coverage is what's really holding them back from being an elite team again. They're giving up too many big plays and too many points on defense. Their rushing attack isn't what it used to be as well. Even if they get very hot, I don't see them beating a more complete team like the Saints, Vikings, Cardinals, or Eagles down the stretch.
...And I don't think the 49ers have a shot at all, because they will be 8-8
at best by season's end. Count on either Dallas or New York to claim that last NFC wild card spot.
I think they need to move Aaron Ross back to his normal spot. I don't think there is anything that can be done with the safeties. They've shuffled guys in and out of there since Phillips' injury. Michael Johnson is our other starting safety and he hasn't impressed me this season. We got rid of Gibril Wilson and James Butler, because we thought we had
two young safeties who could take their place.
Hopefully Kenny Phillips' injury is nothing long-term, like they say. He's going to be among the elite safeties in the NFL if he stays healthy. Michael Johnson is okay, but nothing special. Ross should definitely move back to cornerback, that's his natural position, and he can make big plays. But we better address the safety position in the draft or free agency. Our backups are terrible. And yeah, letting both Butler and Wilson go didn't fair well...
