Yeah. Baylor, SMU, Houston, and Rice made the conference a joke. (All from Texas. Go figure.)

I know this is off topic, but I REALLY hope Davonte Neal signs with Arkansas. He visits Arizona on the 10th, but Arkansas has been his top choice for a while. Then again, Arkansas was DGB's top choice for the majority of recruiting too -_-

----------------------------------------

Heh. Tech had a garbage football program before they joined the Big 12. I think I saw that they only won 2 SWC championships? At least Baylor and Houston were competitive sometimes.

And glad you guys have some good recruits looking at you. Nebraska's is still subpar, and the natives are getting pretty restless. =/
----------------------------------------

I'd imagine Ohio State is plucking the talent up there. Meyer is going to attract a lot of those recruits.

----------------------------------------

Nebraska's at a weird crossroads. We used to get talent from Texas because of the Big Twelve conference, but now that's beginning to dry up. The instate talent hasn't been there the past few years, and I don't know what inroads we can make into Big Ten country. This year's class is a mess. There's a few kids from California, a few from Arizona, a couple from Texas, a couple from the Rockies, a couple from Illinois, a couple from Ohio, a couple from the South. I don't know if plucking players from the four corners of the nation is a viable strategy, but I hope it works. If not, then I think we're screwed for a good, long time. A bad location and a coach with an almost legendary temper makes for a couple of terrible obstacles when it comes to recruiting. We don't need to start establishing a tradition of 6-6 or worse seasons on top of that.
----------------------------------------

What about past recruiting classes? Is there enough talent on the roster right now to sustain a dry spell in recruiting?

----------------------------------------

Not to my knowledge. Our marquee players on defense this past year were all seniors, and it doesn't look like anyone's going to step up and replace them. Our secondary was ripped apart by Wisconsin of all teams, and our linebacking corps has been a one man show for the past two years. Not to mention, our defensive line lost an NFL-level talent in Crick, and his replacement, Steinkuhler, has been a little underwhelming. Our O-line was adjusting from a read option-centered offense to a pistol-centered traditional option offense this last year. People are crying bad coaching by Cotton, and I don't blame them, but I'll give him one more year to try to right the ship. We're returning a stud RB, and have talent at WR, but our QB is garbage and the coach has shown that he's not willing to replace him, even when we're in the 4th quarter and up by 35.

All things considered, I'm seeing 8-4, 7-5 this next year. I really hope I'm wrong.
----------------------------------------

That stinks. College football is better when traditional powers like Nebraska are good. Speaking of which, I really hope all of this USC nut-hugging the media is doing is just that. They have some talent, but I really hope they slip up somehow on that pathetic schedule they play.

Here's the reality we're talking about tradition-wise.

No conference champions since 1999
No BCS games since 2001
No top 10 finishes since 2001

Considering we're asking 17 year olds to buy into us being successful again, when we haven't been successful since they were 6, it's not looking good. We're a dinosaur of a program, a has-been.

Terribly so. There's even a segment of them that are trying to convince the rest of us to be satisfied with just being a 7-5, 8-4 team in a small, cold-weather state that simply can't compete with the Ohios, Texases, and Floridas of the world.

Not me. I'm old enough to remember 1994, 1995, and 1997. I want those years to come again, and I won't be satisfied until we're at least on the doorstep.

Haha. Yeah, we had those "up the middle on 3rd and 13" years in the late 90s and early 2000s. It was almost comical, if it wasn't so sad. Now that coach is apparently making the Ohio Bobcats into a winning program. -shrugs-

Where is Houston Nutt, anyway? We about had him coaching Nebraska at one point, but he didn't want to come here. I'd be thankful, but we got Bill Callahan instead. stressed

He'd be best just being a defensive coordinator somewhere. I'm not sure where he ended up, if he even got hired. I can remember when Matt Jones was our QB, the stadium actually gave the team a standing ovation for a deep incomplete pass. That's how bad it was.

Haha. That reminds me of Callahan's last year. I was at a game against Texas A&M, and one of the linebackers who was a star during his junior year had regressed for his senior year, and started jawing off about the fans not supporting him enough during interviews. The coach got a standing O when he benched him mid-game.
Glad to see there's still some class acts out there.

Quote:
Five months ago, David Wilganowski's heart stopped beating in the middle of a football game he was playing for Rudder High School in Bryan, Texas. He collapsed and his parents and medical personnel rushed to a nightmare.

"He had taken his last breath," said his mom, Susan.

Paramedics revived him, but doctors diagnosed Wilganowski with something called Long QT Syndrome, a genetic mutation that can result in sudden death. Although it did not end Wilganowski's life, it did end his football career. Or so everyone thought.

"I got to thinking maybe I lost my scholarship," he said. "I'm gonna have to work on my grades some more."

~~~~~~~~~~~
This did not stop Rice University coach David Bailiff from giving Wilganowski a football scholarship, however. Wilganowski, who had committed to the Owls in June, signed a national letter of intent Wednesday.
"We ask those young men to commit to us, and we tell them we're gonna be there through thick and thin," Bailiff said. "That's how that works. Your word has to be good."
Why cant Illinois or Northwestern ever field a competitive team in any sport besides women's sports.
Can we trade these shitty college schools for a real NCAA football team?
I should have listened to my dad and root for Michigan instead of Northwestern.
Heh. Northwestern needs fans. I have far more respect for a Northwestern fan than I would for a Michigan fan that was from Illinois. Keep it up. Even if your teams aren't that great, I appreciate what you do. =D
Wow what a diva lol. Yeah Nutt drove the program into the ground. He's lucky Arkansas produced great talent within the state to make his teams decent. McFadden and Jones were Arkansas talent. Callahan and Pelini have both installed an "Us vs. the fans and the media" mindset in the players. He was just acting how the coach told him to act, I believe. But yeah, he's not remembered fondly around here.
It must be nice, having good in state talent. I think Nebraska's wouldn't be so bad if NSAA rules allowed for spring club football or something. And well, I'm glad we didn't get Nutt, though Callahan wasn't much better at all. Really, the fans were hoping to get Paul Johnson, the guy that's coaching Georgia Tech right now.
And well, I'm glad we didn't get Nutt, though Callahan wasn't much better at all. Really, the fans were hoping to get Paul Johnson, the guy that's coaching Georgia Tech right now.
In state talent is what boosted Arkansas to where it is now. McFadden, Jones, and Hillis started it. Then they were followed by Ryan Mallett. Now after Mallett is Tyler Wilson. All in state recruits. Not to mention the WR's they have from inside the state now. Dennis Johnson is also from Arkansas.
He'd be best just being a defensive coordinator somewhere. I'm not sure where he ended up, if he even got hired. I can remember when Matt Jones was our QB, the stadium actually gave the team a standing ovation for a deep incomplete pass. That's how bad it was.
Haha. That reminds me of Callahan's last year. I was at a game against Texas A&M, and one of the linebackers who was a star during his junior year had regressed for his senior year, and started jawing off about the fans not supporting him enough during interviews. The coach got a standing O when he benched him mid-game.
Wow what a diva lol. Yeah Nutt drove the program into the ground. He's lucky Arkansas produced great talent within the state to make his teams decent. McFadden and Jones were Arkansas talent. If Nutt would have had to recruit out of state, Arkansas would have been a sub .500 team every year. He's a horrible coach.
Nebraska's so thin on it that Iowa and Iowa State pulling players away from us is kind of a threat to how we are as a program. Then again, many of the players from in the state end up walking on. As it is right now, our only starters from in-state are the interior linemen on offense and defense, and the kicker. All of the skill positions are taken from out of state. It kinda sucks, really.
