** Capoeira é defesa, ataque, ginga do corpo, e malandragem. **

Hello, and Welcome to Gaia's First Official Capoeira Thread!
We are currently the longest-existing Capoeira thread with the largest group of Capoeiristas joined together in one place!
While older threads have died and been forgotten, mostly due to Capoeira itself being not as well known, here we strive to always keep the conversation interesting and going, so the thread itself doesn't die.

This thread is not only for people who already do Capoeira, it's also for those who take an interest in it and would like to try it out! My personal belief is that Capoeira is for everyone, so everyone should at least give it a try! 3nodding
We encourage you to come in, chat a little, and give us a chance to interest you in it!
If you're not into martial arts, no worries! I myself am the biggest example. I wasn't into martial arts at all, my entire life, it held no interest whatsoever to me. That didn't change the love that Capoeira would put into my heart.
If you ARE into martial arts, great! 3nodding Capoeira can be one more passion!

Please enjoy your stay in our thread! We're glad to have you here!

~* About the Thread Creator *~

- Hello, you may call me either Belle (real name), or Novela (Capoeira nickname) 3nodding
I am a Brazilian girl who came to live in the United States in early 2004, and have always admired Capoeira as a beautiful and useful form of art, and a fighting style.

Recently, by the beginning of 2008 (March, to be exact), I started taking Capoeira classes, and right now I am aiming for my third Batizado (Baptism, in portuguese - a graduation), and to get my Troca de Corda (exchange of cords).
Right now my cord is green-yellow, which is the second cord given in my Group (Capoeira Guerreiros), but keep in mind that the colors change depending on what group you're a part of.

I in no way think that Capoeira is better than any other sport or martial art; it is merely my personal choice of a sport, and to keep fit.

I also think that the Gaia community has a lack of Capoeira related threads, so I am creating this one sweatdrop
Hoping that it will attract more Capoeiristas, and hopefully build a small group, to have fun and talk about what we love!

~* Rules *~

- Follow the ToS, no matter what
- Respect Capoeira, just like I respect other fighting styles and sports. No one martial art is better than the other.
- No flaming. Capoeira is all about the Brazilian culture, being friendly and welcoming. Any one person is welcome in this thread.
- Have fun! heart

~* Some Capoeira History *~

- Capoeira was developed by African Slaves brought to Brazil in the 16th century to fight their oppressors. It's a combination of martial arts and acrobatics.

Its exact creation and evolution is part myth, mystery and romanticism, but the most popular story is that the Bantu slave group were thought to have spawned the birth of Capoeira. Their culture and history was not stored in books but in their bodies, hearts, and souls. They worked day after day and at night they would rest in places called Senzalas (slave camps), where they cried out their sorrow through the music, dance, and prayer. These rituals helped them to become one force and the Senzalas were to become the center of their liberation struggle.

When the Dutch invaded Brazil in the 17th century, many of the African slaves took advantage of the anarchy and fled away to form small villages known as Quilombos, with internal social and economical structures. The Capoeira was a rudimentary fighting style used to defend the Quilombo dos Palmares against colonialists' attacks.

When the Portuguese regained control in the early 19th century, fleeing Napoleon's invasion on their home turf, they sought to repress forms of African culture including Capoeira. Terrified plantation owners banned it, so Capoeira had to be disguised as a dance. The ban was only lifted in 1920.

After the abolishment of Slavery in 1888, the former African slaves found they did not fit in with the new order, and many sunk to criminality and gangs, especially the Capoeiristas, and these gangs added daggers and flick knives to the traditional Capoeira moves, used to disperse anti-monarchy rallies in Rio.

Meanwhile, in Bahia, Brazil, the Capoeira more creatively evolved into a ritual fight-dance game where it survived into the 20th century. Manuel dos Reis Machado, also known as Mestre Bimba, is a leading figure in Capoeira. Mestre Bimba formed the first Capoeira academy in his hometown of Salvador, Bahia, teaching the aggressive Capoeira Regional Style, and promoting it as a national sport. In 1936 Capoeira was officially recognized by the Brazilian administration as part of Brazil's inherited culture. The first Capoeira school officially opened in 1932 by Mestre Bimba, who was to be revered and admired as one of the fathers of modern day Capoeira, having developed the Capoeira Regional, one of the two styles of Capoeira. Another style is Capoeira de Angola, which maintains the traditional ritual and cultural essence of the slave art, promoted by Angola Mestre Vincente Ferreira Pastinha in his life's work.

The game takes two forms; Angola, slower and calculated with movements close to the ground; and Regional, fast and furious!

Since apparently Capoeira is not very famous here on Gaia, I'm thinking I'll probably have to bump this thread up a few times, until we start getting people to post... sweatdrop

Well, that's not very useful... sweatdrop

"Capoeira" is a brazilian word, thus not being included in FireFox's spell checker.
