Stats are overrated. I think they should just get rid of the DPOY award altogether.
Its not even his stats. It is his effect on his entire team.
Who else on that team is even considered a GOOD defensive player? Not one other player, but Dwight effects EVERY shot in the paint and Unlike Yao he can't be picked and rolled to death. Yet his team plays good defense and Rashard and Hedo had never ever in the history of everness been known as defensive players.
Rafer plays some defense...but as I said...your young quick and strong...you will destroy the guy. I laughed when Paul embarrassed him then the next time we play the Hornets Brooks is on him and we contain him better. Dwill made lunch meat outta Rafer EVERY time and it made the WHOLE team defense look bad.
Basketball 101. If you have a PG that can penetrate when he wants to it makes your entire defense looks bad. It's not Dwight's job to close the lanes it's the Job of everyone else.
We've seen many times this postseason where a Guard goes off...like Brooks...making a good defense look bad for a night or a series. That's what good PGs do and Rafer plays good D against some PGs but a guy like Rondo is his weakness. Just too quick and strong for him.
Thats why the Lakers are barely playing Fisher, because Phil knows that penetration is the basic form of breaking down a defense.
Phil said it's all about penetration. Period. He said at first we had to prevent penetration by denying Yao the ball...which they did, hint at me complaining about Yao's shot number...then Phil says that now they are getting penetration by Brooks.
That's all you have to do to break down any defense, it's not entirely Dwights fault. Once Rafer is beaten, Dwight has to either cut off the lane or stay back...that's too much to ask from a Center.
That's one of the reasons Boston's defense is so good, they have a guy who can spearhead the defense in Rondo then a guy who can help and clean up...and cut off lanes in Garnett...and when Garnett isn't there...Rondo still is and Perk.
Same can be said why Detroit lost it's defense when they Lost Billups and Denver suddenly gained theirs despite losing former DPOY Camby.
